Charlie
Boxer/Terrier
Age: 10 weeks
Charlie was rescued from a southern
shelter at this very tender age. Even a puppy
this young is at risk of being euthanized in
crowded shelters without no-kill policies.

T
hese are the faces that can melt hearts
of stone: shelter dogs who want nothing more than to find a home and
someone to love. But they have had
one lucky break. All of these impossibly cute pups have been rescued by North Shore
Animal League America, headquartered in Port
Washington, New York. The league is the largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization in
the world, saving 20,000 abandoned pets every
year and helping them find loving homes. Since
it was founded in 1944, the league has managed
to place almost 1 million dogs and cats of all ages.
Its sprawling Long Island campus, located 20 miles from New
York City, has its own veterinary
center, which provides 24-hour
care—in addition to treating
10,000 animals a year on an
outpatient basis, performing
free neutering or spaying on all
animals that are adopted, and
offering educational and vaccination programs. You can find
out more about North Shore on
its website, animalleague.org, or
call 516-883-7575. In the meantime, enjoy some of the most
adorable faces you’ll ever see…
Annie
Shepherd Mix
Age: 2 years
Awww! Those eyes!
That face! Don’t they
just say, “Take me
home, please!” Gentle
Annie was rescued
from a distant shelter,
and now she’s waiting
patiently for her new
owner to show up. How
will they recognize
each other? How can
you even ask?

These little guys, born
in the Animal League’s
foster care program, are
just plain adorable! Their
beagle mom was rescued

the best thing Bill Conrad
could ever have done
I’ll never forget the moment I discovered
Max lying on the pavement, his hind legs
bent at an angle that didn’t seem possible,
the look in his normally trusting eyes a mix
of terror and something resembling profound disappointment. I’d adopted him
just three just weeks earlier, and he was
forever slipping out of the house unnoticed.

On a recent trip to Nantucket, Elizabeth Kurzweil

just couldn’t give her up!”

athletic dog with a
soft, affectionate

might have a “job”
like retrieving objects

to the Animal League
from an overcrowded
municipal shelter.
