2015 | Forest City Community Guide
More than 150 years ago, Robert Clark from Pennsylvania
sought out a better life in the westward settling of a new state called
Iowa — “Land between Two Rivers.” As he traveled from Mason
City northwest to the new frontier, he came to a spot where a river
flowed, trees were plentiful for building and a giant prairie laid to the
West, which was abundant with deer, elk and buffalo — a perfect
combination. Here Mr. Clark, in 1855, set the pin stakes for a town
called Forest City, which was to be literally carved out of the native
forest.
Much can be written about the following 160 years.
Although the Civil War interrupted the growth of Forest City,
the benefits of the new community were attractive to immigrant
settlers. In 1879, a new rail line running between Minneapolis
and St. Louis brought new faces and new languages from Sweden,
Norway, Germany and Denmark to Forest City. In the 1900s, Forest
City’s history showed the progressiveness that continues today in the
community. New schools, banks, churches, the formation of Waldorf
College and the introduction of electricity and telephone turned
Forest City into a county seat town ideal for raising families and
growing industry.
Entrepreneurship has never been a mute point. A new county
courthouse was built in 1896, which still stands majestic today in the
center of town. Two large, first-class hotels were built in town, one of
which became, in 1903, what we know today as Waldorf College.
The formation of the Farmers Co-op in 1916 helped develop the rich
area land base which, in 2007, grew the largest average county
corn yield per acre of any county in Iowa. In 1924, citizens stepped
forward to preserve forever the remnants and beauty of the Wisconsin
Glacial Drift, which is enjoyed by thousands today as Pilot Knob
State Park. Great strides continued in 1960 when local investors,
headed by John K. Hanson and Elliot Cooper, took over a failing outof-town travel trailer factory and made it into Winnebago Industries
— today’s leader in worldwide RV motor home manufacturing. And
last but not least, Forest City Community Schools are now in the
process of adding a second wind turbine to complement the one
they erected more than 10 years ago, cranking green power to the
classroom and community.
If there were a book title for this Winnebago County town it
would be, “Forest City — A Place to Grow... families, education,
government, industry and productive farm fields.” Welcome to our
community, where roots run deep to grow the future!

Our residential program offers an excellent selection of popular
majors, including theatre, history, business, criminal justice,
communications and wellness. Students are taught by professors, not
teaching assistants. And our low student:faculty ratio means you’ll
get plenty of personal attention from caring professors dedicated to
your success. Our academic facilities are superb for a school this
size: Our science labs are excellent, we have a state-of-the art
multi-media lab, and Waldorf even has its own television and
radio stations!
The Waldorf campus is a close-knit community with strong ties to
and benefits for Forest City. We bring outstanding musicians from
all over the world right here to northern Iowa with our Waldorf
Community Artist Series. Comedians, bands, writers, poets and
artists are frequently on campus for readings and performances
that are open to all. And our 18 intercollegiate sports teams offer
plenty of excitement in exceptional facilities that welcome local
spectators.
When you’re visiting Forest City, please stop by and say hello! We’d
be happy to give you a tour and show you what we have to offer.
Prospective students can earn a $500 scholarship just for visiting the
Waldorf College campus!
Family Alliance for Veterans of America (FAVA)
100 North Clark St.
641-585-5995
Family Alliance for Veterans of America (FAVA) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit
organization with its national headquarters in Forest City. The Mission
of FAVA is to provide information, education, advocacy and support
to families of Veterans and Veterans. FAVA’s Motto is: “You are not
alone!” FAVA is a subsidiary of WestCare Foundation, a 40-year-old
non-profit, providing behavioral health and human services in sixteen
States and two US Territories. FAVA serves all Veterans and their family
members and considers anyone who has served a day in the military
“a Veteran.” The staff and volunteers at FAVA are either Veterans or
family members of veterans and, sometimes, both. FAVA knows the
military mindset and has great understanding of what Veterans and
their families are going through. Through FAVA’s database of over
100,000 resources across the United States, Veteran Advocates and
FAVA staff, trained as resource facilitators, work to connect Veterans
and their families to the exact resources that will best fill their unmet
needs. FAVA also carries the message through its outreach and
education to communities, businesses, organizations and educational
institutions with the goal of further raising awareness and connecting
with those to whom FAVA brings it valuable services in its recognition
of the sacrifice of America’s Veteran families. 641-243-4103 or

Pilot Knob State Park — camping available
Office: 2148 - 340th St. (five miles east of Forest City)

www.iowadnr.gov/parks/state_park_list/pilot_knob.html
Standing atop the tower built by the Civilian Conservation
Corps in the 1930s on “Pilot Knob,” the second highest point in
Iowa, visitors have a spectacular view of some of the most fertile
farmland in the world.
Hidden within the 700-acre park and enclosed by abrupt
banks is Dead Man’s Lake, a four-acre floating sphagnum bog, the
only one of its kind in Iowa. This is a botanist’s delight, bordered
by native trees, shrubs and flowering plants. Waterfowl feed and
breed in the tall grasses. Three species of pond lilies grow here,
one found nowhere else in Iowa. Trees native to the Pilot Knob area
include walnut, ash, basswood, wild cherry, burr oak, aspen, white
oak and red oak. Pilot Knob’s natural features are so significant,
the majority of the park has been dedicated as a state preserve. A
scenic 15-acre, man-made lake offers fishing and boating with the
use of electric motors only.
Pilot Knob has multiple picnic areas, shelter houses, a
campground, and trails for hiking, cross-country skiing, horseback
riding, snowmobiling and biking. Two open picnic shelters can be
reserved online through the park reservation system: iowastateparks.
reserveamerica.com. Picnic tables and fireplaces are plentiful in
shaded areas. The Park campground has 60 campsites (48 with
electrical hook-ups), a nearby playground, modern showers,
restroom facilities and a trailer dump station. Half of the campsites
are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with advance
campsite reservations for the balance booked through the park
reservation system: iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com.
Thorpe (County) Park — camping available
Office: 34496 - 110th Ave. (five miles west of Forest City)
641-565-3390

This park contains a wetland that is popular with waterfowl
hunters in the fall and 15-acre Lake Catherine, which provides a
quiet fishing spot year-round. Much of the park is made up of an
oak-hickory savanna with numerous prairie areas.
The park is popular with family campers and picnickers. The
160-acre park provides the public with fishing, camping, picnicking
and hiking opportunities. Lake Catherine contains a nice variety of
fish, including largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish and crappies. In
addition, a scenic trail circles the marsh.
The Thorpe Park campground contains 13 electric sites and
two non-electric sites, and the shelter house can be reserved for a
small fee. Reservations are required for the Lake Catherine Cabin
rental; reservation forms are available on the website.

Forest City is home to one of Iowa’s premier disc golf courses. Forest
City’s Disc Golf Course covers two parks (Pammel Park and East
Woods Park) and is located just east of downtown, along both sides
of the Winnebago River. This course offers 21 poles with challenging
tees for advanced players as well as tees for new or recreational
players. The course has a good mix of terrain from open and level
fairways to elevated and wooded areas and even has a few water
hazards. Recreational tees average 205’ in length (longest 400’/
shortest 145’); advance tees average just over 350’ long (longest
720’/shortest 145’).
Camping with full hook-ups is also available within the course
grounds. The course is also home to several tournaments: Battle at the
Bridge, Tree Town Team Tournament and a PDGA sanctioned event
“Border Bash” that brings pros from Minnesota and Iowa together to
do battle and determine which state is supreme.

2015 | Forest City Community Guide
Winnebago County is a rural county with a farming heritage with
a population of nearly 12,000 people. Forest City is the county
seat of Winnebago County. The Winnebago County Courthouse,
a Romanesque building from 1896, was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places in 1981. We invite you to spend time
on the courthouse square. Enjoy a picnic meal at the gazebo; visit
the Civil War Union Soldier (details are listed on a plaque attached
to the Courthouse); walk through the Winnebago County Veterans
Monument, erected in 2001, listing more than 3,000 names of
those who served our nation from Winnebago County and see the
Sherman tank (nearby display describes the Sherman tank’s usage
during World War II).New to the square in 2013 is the SpanishAmerican War Cannon, a replica replacing the original cannon that
was donated in 1942 to support the WWll War effort via a scrap
metal drive (details of the original cannon are listed on a plaque
attached to the pedestal that displays the cannon).
