THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! St. Peter's is blessed with many
skilled, creative and generous people! Sincere thanks to our Island
Gardeners who "beautify" our church parking lot islands. They are
Rhoda Goss, Tricia Hough, Chris Shimer, Carol Esbenshade, John & Lori Salzmann, Carol Shaefer and Peter Murdock.
Thank you Peter, for placing St. Francis in your island as he keeps watch! Special thanks to Shirley & Bill Schlener
who, every year, donate and plant geraniums around our church sign on the front lawn. Just think how many people pass
by every day! And heartfelt thanks to George Groff for installing an engraved brass plate in our cemetery, on the site of
our very first church that was built in 1880. This was a project of our Archives Committee. Stop by and take a look. It's
located in the lower right corner of the older section, near the alley gate.

Christian Education
Great Summer Reads for “Youth & Adult Christian Education”
Our Sunday school, Bible study and other learning events may be on a summer hiatus, but you can
still continue to learn and grow, even on vacation! Here are some great summer reads recommended
by your rostered staff .
Pastor Ross:
Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes: Cultural Studies in the Gospels (by Ken Bailey)
Description: Beginning with Jesus' birth, Ken Bailey leads you on a kaleidoscopic study of Jesus throughout the
four Gospels. Bailey examines the life and ministry of Jesus with attention to the Lord's Prayer, the Beatitudes,
Jesus' relationships with women, and especially Jesus' parables, so as to lead you into a deeper understanding of
the person and significance of Jesus within his own cultural context.
The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief Paperback (by Francis S. Collins)
Description: An instant bestseller, The Language of God provides the best argument for the integration of faith
and logic since C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity. It has long been believed that science and faith cannot
mingle. Written for believers, agnostics, and atheists alike, The Language of God provides a testament to the
power of faith in the midst of suffering without faltering from its logical stride.
Pastor Sarah:
Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God's Work (by Timothy Keller)
Description: In a work world that is increasingly competitive and insecure, people often have nagging questions:
Why am I doing this work? Why is it so hard? And is there anything I can do about it? How can I find meaning
and serve customers in a cutthroat, bottom-line-oriented workplace? Can I stay true to my values and still advance
in my field? With deep insight and often surprising advice, Keller shows readers that biblical wisdom is immensely
relevant to our questions about our work.
ELOGOS: Daily Devotions for Down to Earth Disciples (by Deb Grant)
Description: E=Everyday LOGOS = Word ELOGOS is a devotional for the everyday Christian. Each day includes a scripture verse, message, a prayer and a small space for personal notes. These pages are honest, renewing
and set in real life images that bring Biblical meaning to life.
Sister Dottie:
The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical by Shane Claiborne
Description: Shane lives out this revolution each day in his local neighborhood, an impoverished community in
North Philadelphia, by living among the homeless, helping local kids with homework, and “practicing
resurrection” in the forgotten places of our world. Shane’s message will comfort the disturbed, and disturb the
comfortable . . . but will also invite us into an irresistible revolution. His is a vision for ordinary radicals ready to
change the world with little acts of love. This is a great book about living out the Gospel and participating in
social justice.
The Qur'an: A Contemporary Understanding by Safi Kaskas (translator)
Description: This is an easy translation in which to understand the Muslim scriptures and their religious doctrines; a great way to help bridge one’s understanding of the Muslim religion and how it compares to our own
Christian Bible. This book is especially relevant to those who attended the Crosspoints Classes on Islam.
Pub theology is for anyone who likes a chance to discuss various topics surrounding theology, religion or
current events. It is a judgment free zone where everyone can feel free to express their opinions. Each
month we meet at a different restaurant.

Prayer Chain Ministry
From Your Prayer Chain.....
DID YOU KNOW......that we do a Spring Book Study?? Each Spring, (usually starting in
mid-May) once a week for 4-6 weeks, members of the prayer chain meet for about an hour to
discuss an inspirational book (usually Max Lucado). This (hopefully) enriches the lives and faith of our member. Some
members are unable to attend, but still read along.
Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks the door will be opened.”
Poem Prayer
for June & July 2016

MY FATHER
When I think about my father,
He was such a giving man,
He would help me with my homework
And as a child would take my hand.
His eyes were kind and gentle
He had such a wondrous way
Of making me feel so special
Each and every day.
If there were clouds throughout the day
That would bring on lots of fears
He’s hold me in his loving arms
And would wipe away my tears.
The years have quickly come and gone and I hold fond memories
Of my father who meant the world to me and who spends eternity
With our God of love and kindness who so gently called him home
We are the children of our Lord who has made us all his own.
THANK YOU FROM THE RALSTON FAMILY —
“The family of Joan Ralston expresses our
sincerest thanks to the congregation of St. Peter’s for all your support and kindness throughout Joan’s illness. The
calls, cards, and visits were greatly appreciated. We also give our deepest thanks for the many cards of sympathy and
the lovely flower arrangement from The Prayer Chain Committee. Lastly, we thank Pastor Ross and Pastor
Teichmann for creating a beautiful service as well as Angela Moshos and Nancy Lefever for the wonderful music. We

MEN’S HEALTH – It’s important
From your Health & Wellness Committee
June is the time to focus on Men’s Health. We hear a lot about mammograms, breast and cervical
cancer screening, and wellness for women, but let’s not forget about our men. Their health is important too, and prostate screenings, and other preventive services are essential for their health and
wellness. Women: it’s up to us to talk with our men, and make sure they are taking care of
themselves and seeing/talking with their medical providers about their health.
So….with that said, it’s time for the men and women to get up and get going! The Health and Wellness Committee
would like to start the ‘Walk around the Lot’ program this month. Remember: We meet outside the church and walk
around the parking lot, (at whatever pace is comfortable). No need to sign up. Just dress comfortably, (yes, it’s ok to
dress comfortably for church), put on your walking shoes, and meet others around 9:15AM, (between the 8AM and 9:45
AM services), at the bench in front of the sanctuary entrance.
No one present to walk with you? Go inside and grab someone! These walks aren’t meant to work up a sweat so you
feel tired, or can’t attend church, but to reach that first 10-15 minutes of exercise for the day. (30 minutes is recommended as the total each day). Know that your Health and Wellness committee are here to support you. If you have
questions, please contact the church and they’ll put you in touch with one of us. Let’s Get up and Get Going! See you
for the Sunday ‘Walk around the Lot’!

Global Missions
News and Views from the Global Missions Committee
”Water, Water, Everywhere”
Think about it! When was the last time you used water? To take a sip from your faucet at home? To make a pot of
coffee? To take a shower or brush your teeth? How easy it is for us Americans (exception: those living in Flint,
Michigan!) to access water anytime and anywhere!
It is not so easy in many parts of the world. As ELCA World Hunger notes, in many places in Africa people (mostly
women) must walk an average of 3.7 miles every day to get their daily household water needs. These folks often use
five-gallon jugs (weighing 40 pounds when filled with water) to carry this necessity of life from streams or wells back to
their homes. EVERY DAY!
How widespread is lack of good, clean water? One out of every four people – 1.8 Billion people around the world –
drink from contaminated water. Think about it! Can we at St. Peter’s make a difference to those whose lives and health
are compromised by lack of good, clean water? YES WE CAN!!
ELCA World Hunger led a Walk for Water project last year, culminating at the Youth Gathering in Detroit, Michigan in
July 2015. Together our Church raised $500,000 for this project. This amount was matched by a generous ELCA family
to make a total of $1 Million. With this financial help, communities will be equipped to provide good, clean water for
drinking, growing crops, sanitation and hygiene. The people in these areas are also receiving health education and training to maximize their use of water.
When a community has access to good, clean water, life changes dramatically. Women do not have to spend hours
gathering water. They can spend more time working their farms to earn income for their families. Children are
healthier, being free from contaminated water-born diseases. They can attend school more regularly. Families can begin
to lift themselves out of poverty and become contributing members of their communities.
We at St. Peter’s are lifting up ELCA World Hunger this year as part of the Always Being Made New Campaign of the
ELCA. Together we can help bring good, clean water to millions who still do not have this necessity of life. To learn
more, visit the website: www.elca.org/worldhunger. Thank you for caring. Thank you for sharing from your
abundance.
Christine Mummert, Chair, St. Peter’s Global Missions Committee
From the Tanzania Mission Committee (TMC):
Mark Aho, a member of our committee, leaves for a 10-day trip to the Konde Diocese Region of Tanzania on June 28,
2016. While there, he will visit Busoka Village, Busoka Lutheran Church, the orphans, several schools, and Itete Hospital (2 miles from Busoka) and will see firsthand the impact that St. Peter’s has had on Busoka and its people. We wish
him safe travel and ask for your prayers for Mark as he spreads the love and good will of St. Peter’s to our companion
congregation and the orphans. On June 5, Mark will present a temple talk of his upcoming trip. In the narthex after
services, Mark will answer any questions you may have. There will be pictures of the region Mark is visiting and
pictures of Busoka Lutheran Church and its people, and you will have an opportunity to give a few dollars that Mark can
then place in the collection plate as a special offering at Busoka Lutheran Church’s worship services.
Pastor John Mwasakilali, who visited here in February 2015 and has returned to Busoka, ministering with the Konde
Diocese (Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania), has been battling malaria and has been in our church
prayers and on the prayer chain for the last several weeks. Pastor John has communicated to us that his health has improved and has thanked us for our prayers. Currently, he is our liaison with Busoka and will meet with Mark when Mark
visits in June/July.

Spiritual Gifts
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit”
By the time you are reading this, the sermon series on Spiritual Gifts has been over
for a few weeks. I hope that you now know what gift or gifts God has given you.
There are no exceptions … God has gifted each one of us with something unique
and special so that we can put these gifts to use for His glory.
The gift for this month is INTERCESSION
Intercession is the gift that enables a believer to pray with the certainty that prayer is heard and, when requests are made, answers will come.
Scripture References (NRSV):
Matthew 6:6 - “But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father
who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
Luke 22:43 - “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.
Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength.”
Ephesians 6:18 - “Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep
alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.”
If you have this gift,

You believe that going to the Lord in prayer is the place to go for direction.

You know with certainty that Jesus is listening and is responding.

You spend quality time praying for others and listening during prayer.

You can lead people to believe in the power of healing that occurs through prayer.

You can open doors to others for help, for the opportunity to give praise and thanks, and the knowledge
that the Lord is working here and how.
Connections to Ministry:
Prayer Chain Ministry, Visitation Ministry, Shut-In Communion Assistant, Teaching and Witnessing to Others
If you have the spiritual gift of Intercession, please consider serving in any one or more of the ministries listed
above! If you would like to take the spiritual gifts assessment, please contact Mary Ann Frontz, Spiritual Gifts
Coordinator, at (717) 581-5397 or via email at [email protected].

St. Peter’s Library
Great Books for Summer Reading
Summer is a time for reading on the beach or in the back yard, during leisure time, and on
vacations. We all waited through a long, dreary winter to get to the warm, sunny days of
summer. St. Peter’s Library has a good choice of books that are perfect for summer reading.
In the past few months, there seems to be a few more people who are taking advantage of our
“Hidden Treasure.” A few more books have been borrowed, and that is a good thing! New
books are always being added. Come and take a look!
Please contact Mary Ann Frontz or Pat Ross if you have any questions about the library.

Pastor’s Letter
Dear Friends:
The summer is my favorite reason for one reason, primarily – I have more time to read
during these three months, that I do at any other time of the year. I love vacationing with
my family, and I enjoy the lighter church schedule which allows more time for visitation.
But I cherish the additional time to read things that are not sermon or bible study fodder.
So, as I often do, I’ll share some of my planned reads for the coming months. I’d love to
know what you are planning to read, also … let me know.
Consolations: The Solace, Nourishment and Underlying Meaning of Everyday
Works, by David Whyte -- With the imagery of a poet and the reflection of a
philosopher, David Whyte turns his attention to 52 ordinary words, each its own
particular doorway into the underlying currents of human life.
When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanitha -- What makes life worth living in the face of death? What
does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions
Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir.
The Language of God, by Francis Collins – It has long been believed that science and faith cannot mingle.
The Language of God provides a testament to the power of faith in the midst of suffering without faltering
from its logical stride.
Wonder, by R.J. Palacio – I read a Young Adult novel or two every year, just to keep up with the genre. This
story about August Pullman who was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school got great reviews a couple of years ago.
The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson -- The classic supernatural thriller by an author who helped
define the genre. One of my “fun” reads.
The City, by Dean Koontz – continues his exploration of good and evil, in ways that tap his active Catholic
faith, using an unconventional genre.
Advice from My 80-Year-Old Self: Real Words of Wisdom from People Ages 7 to 88, by Susan O'Malley - What advice would your 80-year-old self give to you? That is the question artist Susan O'Malley, who was
herself to die far too young, asked more than a hundred ordinary people.
Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness, by William Styron -- Styron's true account of his descent into a
crippling and almost suicidal depression.
I have some others that a few of you have lent to me, that I may get to. Each summer I have read through the Harry
Potter series, but this summer I may tap Tolkien’s Hobbit/Lord of the Rings quartet for something different. We’ll see
how the spirit moves me. If you are looking for a provocative and well researched blog of books both for adults and
children, check out BrainPickings.org. It is my latest “must read” and the source of at least a few of the choices see
here.
See you in Church … (where we can talk about books),

Pastor Sarah’s Message
Dear friends in Christ,
Times change.
You know all time changes, this is what time does. You’ve noticed it in your home as alarms
may not be set so early (or at all). Your time may no longer be set to the schedule of school
buses, but perhaps is set to the schedule of summer vacation or projects to accomplish. Perhaps you tell time by how long your grass has grown or the number of weeds that are invading your garden.
Our church time has changed. As Sunday School has ended for the season, our late service
meets earlier.
From now through Labor Day we meet for worship at 8am and 9:45am Traditional and
9:45am New Day Praise service.
My time has changed during the week at church, too. During the school year I could set my time to the yips, yells and
laughter of little children in our preschool, but as summer sets in so does the sound of silence. I miss their energy and
their joy that they bring to St. Peter’s, and I am grateful for the pre-school summer camps that will take place during the
summer.
What does the summertime look like for you?
Is it quieter or busier than the other parts of the year? Do you have a lot of projects and dreams to realize or do you live
in the “lazy days of summer?”
What does your faith life look like in the summertime?
If you’re looking for a good book that dives into faith and life check out Sister Dottie’s section in the Herald titled
“Great Summer Reads for Youth & Adult Christian Education” which include suggested reads from all the rostered
leaders.
Perhaps like many others, you are traveling or spending time with family and so your usual schedule of worship gets a
bit off track. When that happens, how do you carve out time for worship or prayer?
If you are away from your faith home during the summer or want another way to connect, check out the online video
devotions that I will be doing called “Pocket church.” You’ll be able to see them on our website and Facebook page
every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and they’ll feature short video devotions about our favorite summertime activities
and how God is working in them and through you this summer.
Whatever you and your family do this summertime, I hope that your time may be well spent.
Peace,
Pastor Sarah

From Vicar Karen —
Thank you, God’s people at St. Peter’s!
It is difficult to believe that my time as your vicar is ending, and yet, much has changed for
me since last July. I have learned a lot and grown in many ways. Thank you for your generous commitment to your vocation as a teaching parish. It is hard for me to describe what
this time has been like. I have received experience not readily available in any other way
to enable a person to bridge the gap from seminarian to pastor. Throughout this year, I
have known the voice of God whispering in my ear what I most needed to hear and know-“yes, this is who you are becoming.”
Thank you for all the ways you welcomed me from the very first day. Thank you for your
kind and encouraging words, your challenging words, for allowing me the freedom to try
new things, to stumble, and to fly. The open environment that I have experienced at St.
Peter’s has allowed me to push myself past my boundaries of what is comfortable, to try different preaching methods, to
bring my own teaching style to well established classes, to be adventurous, to receive helpful critique, to care for you
when you were sick, and to counsel and pray for you when you were confused or hurting.
Walking alongside some of St. Peter’s amazing young adults has been a particular honor and joy for me. Many thanks to
the members of Food Friends Faith, for your part in forming this group, for your candor, your prayers, and for the fun
we have had together. I will continue to hold you in my heart, and pray that you will know God’s voice as you seek to
listen and discover who God has created and enabled you to be. Be courageous and trust God’s promises to be with you!
It is always a bit dangerous to thank particular people, because I don’t want to exclude anyone, and because so many of
you have been amazing in your welcome and care for me this past year. But I need to publically thank a few. The support staff here is amazing. It has been a pleasure to get to know you and to serve among you.
Many heartfelt thanks to Pr. Craig who must be the best supervisor ever. Thank you for all you have given of yourself,
your time, expertise, and encouragement. Thank you for allowing me the freedom to ask hard questions as we have explored the many nuances of pastoral ministry, and to see how much joy and satisfaction you experience in the privilege
of pastoring the people of St. Peter’s.
Thank you to Neil Snyder and all those on my internship committee—Joe, MaryAnn, Betsey, Becky, Stephen, Doug,
and Greg. Thank you for the memories, the critique, the support, the laughs, the time, and the energy you have given to
me this past year.
Many thanks to Pr. Sarah and Sr. Dottie. You have treated me as a partner in ministry. You have made yourselves available for questions, a good laugh, and offered your help to me with eagerness. In many ways, I have benefitted from two
additional supervisors this past year.
I wish I could tell you how many times it was clear to me that the Holy Spirit led me to St. Peter’s for this year. I could
never have imagined the joy of how I have been nurtured as a “pastor to be” in your midst. Each of you has been God’s
person to me, helping me to become who God is calling me to be. It will be difficult to say goodbye, but the time is here.
I am ready to discover God’s leading for my next steps and you will have the joy of welcoming a new vicar! I will always treasure you and the time among you in my heart.
I pray that according to the abundant wealth of God’s glory
You may become strong with power through the Spirit in the inner person,
that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith,
so that, being rooted and grounded in love,
you may be able to comprehend with all the saints
what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
and thus to know the love of Christ that goes beyond knowledge,
so that you may be filled up with all the fullness of God.
Now to the all-powerful One, who is able
to do immeasurably more than we can ask or understand,
be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations,
forever and ever. Amen.
(Ephesians 3:16-21)
May the grace-filled blessings and peace of Christ be with you and always enliven your way.

There is no Sunday school over the summer months, but please join us in September as we begin a new
Sunday school year filled with faith, fellowship, and fun!
Jill Pretz led our preschool Sunday school this year in singing! Children ages 2 through Kindergarten
learned about the church seasons and God’s love as they sang age appropriate Bible songs. The children
also performed at services in December and April. A HUGE thank you goes out to Jill for sharing her
talents with these lucky kids!
A BIG thank you goes out to the over 30 volunteers who made this year’s Sunday School a success! From
the teachers, to the assistants, guides and station leaders, we couldn’t do it without you! If you are interested in helping for the 2016-17 school year, email Samantha at [email protected].
Our 2016 Vacation Bible School, Surf Shack, will be held for children ages 4 through 6th grade at
St. Peter’s from July 18-22. At Surf Shack, kids participate in memorable Bible-learning activities,
sing catchy songs, play games, dig into yummy treats, experience epic Bible adventures, and many
more fun activities. We look forward to welcoming Erik Teichmann in leading the music for the
week! Join us for a fun week of faith and fellowship! Registration forms are available in the
Narthex.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!– Check out the volunteer form at the display in the Narthex and fill it out! There are
opportunities for everyone to help out, regardless of how much time you have to give. You can also email Samantha at
[email protected].
Kids ages 4 through 4th grade learned about Mary and Martha in the most recent Sunday School session. Mary and
Martha welcomed Jesus into their home and they (and our kids) learned a valuable lesson about making time to listen to
Jesus. The Rotation Sunday School also made this simple biscuit recipe that you can try at home! While making it,
encourage your kids to tell you about the story of Martha and Mary!
Easy Biscuits:
2 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/4 c. butter
2/3 - 3/4 c. milk
Mix flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter. Mix in milk. Mix well with hands. Place on
board and roll out. Cut. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes, watching carefully. Let
cool and enjoy!
As always, if you have any questions about Children’s Ministries, contact Samantha Cuascut,
Director of Children’s Ministries at [email protected] or 717-586-0330.

St. Peter’s Preschool
Our preschool year has come to an end and we are now preparing for our summer camp which begins on June 7 th! We
enjoyed an outstanding year with a healthy enrollment and lots of new families joining ours. Many thanks to our loyal
and talented group of teachers who put their hearts into the important task of preparing children for the challenges of
kindergarten and grown-up school. We send them out into the world after their time with us,
confident that they have grown into life-long learners and above all, kind and gracious little children.
It is a blessing to be able to work with young families at this most joyful time in their lives.
We are still enrolling for September, 2016 and hope to be starting the school year at full capacity.
Our enrollment trends are up this year and we are excited about being able to operate with full
classes, even in our afternoons! It’s much more energizing when our church building is brimming
with the happy sounds of St. Peter’s Preschool students.

Summer Music
Many thanks to all of the musicians who are providing music for services over the
summer. The church appreciates your gifts and your willingness to share them!
Father’s Day – Women’s Pick-up Choir – June 19th
Father’s Day is fast approaching! A pick-up choir of all women will form to sing
during the 9:45 service on June 19th. There will be brief rehearsals between services on
June 12th and June 19th. This cross-generational choir will help lead worship and
serenade the fathering figures in the church during the offertory. Come join us!
Hymn Sing Preludes
We will have hymn-sing preludes again this summer as the prelude at the traditional services on the last Sunday of the
month. Before the service begins, we will take requests and sing a verse or two of each favorite in place of the prelude.
Come early on June 26th, July 31st, and August 28th and be ready to shout out your favorite hymn number!
Handbell Petting Zoo – August 7th
Have you ever wondered what it was like to ring a handbell? Maybe you’d like to try! There will be a Handbell Petting
Zoo between services on August 7th. Join some of our very own handbell ringers in the narthex for this hands-on
opportunity to see what the fun is all about!
Lancaster British Brass Band – August 6th
St. Peters’ final Musical Arts concert will take place August 6th at 7:00pm. The Lancaster British Brass Band presents
Beatles Go Brass, a concert featuring the music of the Beatles completely clothed in brass with the latest terrific
arrangements of your favorite Beatles songs.
Adam Lefever Hughes
Director of Music

Hymn Sing Preludes
We will again observe a hymn-sing prelude once a month during the summer at our traditional worship services. In
place of an anthem as the prelude, we will ask for favorite hymn requests from the congregation. Please join us early for
worship on the following dates, so that you can sing a verse or two of our favorite hymn. The dates will be: Sunday,
June 26 … Sunday, July 31 … Sunday, August 28.
NARTHEX COFFEE BAR
A huge Thank You goes out to all the amazing volunteers that made coffee bar
possible this year. Thank you, if you made and served coffee and treats. Thank you, if
you took the time to bake delicious treats. Thank you, if you made monetary
donations every Sunday. Also, thanks to you, our members, for enjoying the coffee,
the treats and the gathering. Thank you!!! Lis Wolf
