Reflections, Announcements, & News from the Pastor’s Desk
Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship.
We will see that there are other gifts more important than material wealth, but even so, it is how we use
our gifts that matter most.
Today’s scriptures point to the value of the gifts of wisdom, trusting in God, and letting our
actions reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for
gold above all other things. From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of God’s gifts
in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than worldly possessions. In Hebrews, we are challenged to look at
our own values and admit honestly what controls our lives.
GIVING OUR ALL
The author of Wisdom suggests that wisdom is the greatest gift we can ask of God. Higher than
the highest royalty, more priceless than any gem, even more important than good health, it is an enduring
gift from God. Attaining it and maintaining it requires sacrifice on our part. Unfortunately, it is more
sacrifice than the rich man in today’s Gospel may have been willing to make.
Like many of us, the rich young man lived a good life and followed God’s laws, but Jesus warned
him that this would not be enough. Even though the rich man had many qualities of a disciple, he lacked
the ability to do the one thing that a disciple needed to do. He needed to surrender everything and follow
Jesus with empty hands. Jesus loved the man and reached out toward him. He told him that the only thing
standing in the way of his discipleship was selling all his possessions and giving the proceeds to the poor.
Sadly for the rich man, he had many possessions. We’ll never find out if he could bring himself to part
with them.
The other disciples stood nearby during this encounter. They had already given up their families
and worldly possessions, so Jesus’ answer to the rich man was very important to them. They already
depended on Jesus completely and they trusted in him.
HUMBLING OURSELVES BEFORE JESUS
Like the rich man, it is hard for us to give up some of the things that we have. Some may count
their worth in dollars and cents, but there are others who are unable to give up their power and control.
There are still others who crave fame and popularity. Many of these gifts: fame, popularity, power and
wealth, have been used throughout history to help the poor and the oppressed. Our own gifts may not be
of such tremendous magnitude, yet nevertheless we are called to share them generously.
Today’s Readings: Wis 7:7–11, Ps 90:12–17; Heb 4:12–13, Mk 10:17–30 [17–27]

Who are the Knights?
Why become a Knight?
In today’s world, many men are looking to
fulfill their desire to spend meaningful time
with their family, to serve their community
and their church, and to grow in their faith.
Joining the Knights of Columbus provides
these men and their families with volunteer opportunities
and activities that accomplish these goals. If you are such
a man who is dedicated to making a difference, then
membership in the Knights of Columbus is for you.
“Campaign for People with
Intellectual Disabilities”
One of the most popular and successful
programs conducted by Knights of Columbus
state and local councils for the benefit of people
with intellectual disabilities is the fundraiser in
which councils collect donations outside the Church. In
appreciation, the donor is offered a candy bar, often a
Tootsie Roll. The high visibility of this program has led
to the campaign being referred to as the Tootsie Roll
Drive.

Introduction to Contemplative Dialogue
Contemplative Dialogue gives us a way and a process to live each
day, sharing beyond words, as a way to a more humane world.
Contemplative Dialogue is a dynamic experience that integrates
our prayer and our way of being in the world. Dialogue, as an act
of justice, impels us to share life in harmony and peace. Come and
explore Pope Francis’ call to Dialogue.
The cost for one person is $15, for two people $25.
Contemplative Dialogue: A Foundation, Nov.6-7, 2015
Contemplative Dialogue brings together the rich tradition of
prayer, contemplation, meditation and dialogue practice as a way
to generate spirituality in every relationship and every moment of
our daily life. This introductory workshop introduces the
foundation of Contemplative Dialogue and gives us a way and a
process to live each day with calm, peace and stability. Come
experience more lightness and joy and a way of conversing and
thinking together that dissolves barriers and obstacles to God’s
love.
This course is divided into three sessions, Friday evening (6:30 8:00 PM), Saturday morning (10:00-11:30 AM) and Saturday
afternoon (1:00 - 2:30 PM). The cost is $25 for one person and
$40 for two people. Please make your checks payable to the
Spiritual Ministry Center. Please bring your own lunch.

The Punch Line
%" :./0."!&+$&/0, ."*&+!1/,# ,),*,+ 3%,
when God promised to give him whatever he asked,
chose wisdom over wealth or power. Now our
modern view of wisdom is usually pictured as the
knowledge and experience of an older person. In
the scriptures, it is God’s Wisdom that is desired.
More than just the wise sayings of a Benjamin
Franklin or Yoda, scriptural wisdom means doing God’s will in all things.
As Jesus tried to tell the man in the gospel, knowing and doing God’s will
is more precious than wealth, or even family!
So if wisdom is that good, why do so few seek it? Most of us have
no problem doing God’s will, as long as it is the same as ours. Or we do
God’s will if it is painless and convenient. I once donated money to a
charity by sending a text message. I don’t know if I would have done it if I
had to write a check and mail it. Sometimes we are like that man in the
gospel, desiring wisdom but not willing to pay for it.

reading, after praising wisdom more than health, wealth, and beauty, ends
with a promise of “countless riches” while Jesus promises that the one who
gives up everything will receive “a hundred times more.” Because the rich
man left in sorrow, he missed the punch line.
I can think of two ways to interpret that promise. One is that the
more we give up for love of the Lord, the more we get back. When

of receiving love, which leads to the second meaning of the promise: When

we are happier because we experience God’s love for us more deeply. So
Wisdom is the way to happiness: We outgrow our desire for things that
make us feel good and appreciate the joy of accepting God’s love and
sharing it with others.Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
How did the church deal with “daily sins” in the first five centuries? As devout and observant as they were, our early fathers and
mothers in faith could not have been all that different from us. Maybe they looked the other way when the grocer threw an extra fig in
the shopping basket, or had a wandering eye for the widow next door, or had a taste for too much ale, or didn’t let the truth get in the
way of a good story. First of all, there was the Eucharist. The words are familiar: “This is the cup of my blood, poured out for the
forgiveness of sin.” Especially by participating in Communion from the cup, forgiveness was achieved. Eucharist was, and remains,
the sacrament of reconciliation par excellence, the sign and source of unity with Christ.
There were other helps along the way: “fraternal” correction, or the course corrections we offer one another in love, prayer, fasting, and
works of mercy. St. Augustine listed endurance of suffering, forgiveness of insults, and added the praying of the Lord’s Prayer in the liturgy.
He felt that the public praying of the Our Father on Sunday and its daily use in private prayer was an essential remedy and the reason why
everyone was not a candidate for canonical penance. Inherited from Augustine’s practice, the Lord’s Prayer in our Communion Rite still has
the same purpose, preparing us for receiving and becoming the Body of Christ.—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

YOUNG ADULTS Join us for our monthly activities for ages 18-39 years of age. Every first Thursday for Eucharistic Adoration,
Faith Topic, Bible Study, and Off-Campus fellowship-social (Off-Campus TBD). Our Adoration (in the church) is an hour long with
music and quiet time. Our faith topics typically relate to the current liturgical season and/or holiday. Bible studies cover the coming
Sunday's readings. The last Thursday of the month, as a group, we go off campus, be it bowling or laser tagging, we continue
enjoying each others camaraderie. When there is a fifth Thursday in a month, we have a service-oriented activity (i.e. write notes or
cards to families of patients in the hospital with words of encouragement and hope), but there are more service activities we need to
share. Come join us! For more information, please contact Dorinamae at [email protected] or website at

COMPASSIONATE CARE MINISTRY
The Compassionate Care Team members have been visiting
parishioners that are not able to attend Mass due to illness for
the past year. It has been rewarding and spiritually uplifting. If
you would like a team member from Compassionate Care
visit you or a loved one that is incapacitated, please call
Margaret McLaughlin, Compassionate Care Coordinator, at
470-8340. One of our team members will sit with you, share
the Gospel readings, pray the Rosary, etc. so that you may
experience the spiritual comfort from one of the team
members.
DISCIPLESHIP AND WEALTH
Sometimes we get the idea that having material wealth is
a bad thing. We may convince ourselves that it is the poor
who are favored. In today’s readings, we discover that
material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship. We
will see that there are other gifts more important than
material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gifts that
matters most.
Today’s scriptures point to the value of the gifts of
wisdom, trusting in God, and letting our actions reflect the
love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall,
but rather the desire for gold above all other things. From the
readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of
God’s gifts in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than
worldly possessions. In Hebrews, we are challenged to look
at our own values and admit honestly what controls our lives.

First Reading — I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to
me. All good things together came to me in her company
(Wisdom 7:7-11).
Psalm — Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for
joy! (Psalm 90).
Second Reading — Indeed the word of God is living and
effective (Hebrews 4:12-13).
Gospel — It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a
needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God
(Mark 10:17-30 [17-27]).

vecindario tranquilo. En pocas palabras, se han hecho ricos. No obstante, éste
