Tim Jackson, Cartoonist & Author
Jackie Ormes was a pioneering African American woman
cartoonist. Her cartoon strips and cartoon characters—
Torchy Brown, Candy, Patty-Jo, and Ginger—were regular
features in African American newspapers like the Chicago
Defender and the Pittsburgh Courier in the late 1930s
through the 1950s. She was a member of Chicago’s black
elite, and some say she modeled her cartoon characters
on herself. Learn the whole story from Tim Jackson,
