CONNECTIONS
The Helena Education Foundation serves as an important link
between community and public education, providing enriching
programs and support for teachers, students, and Helena schools
that contribute to the outstanding academic opportunities for the
next generation: the over 8,000 students currently in our public
schools. Key to HEF’s innovation and success is the understanding
that excellent public schools forge healthy communities— places
where we all want to live, work, and play.
PROGRAMS
HEF’s programs benefit students, teachers, parents, administrators, and the community. No doubt, you or someone you know
has been impacted by our work.
n Carnival Classic kicks off each school year with a communitywide event. n Fabulous Firsts gives to every incoming first
grader (over 500), an award-winning, hard cover book of his or
her own. n Great Conversations provides a night of thoughtprovoking conversation about relevant topics to promote continuous learning. n Great Ideas Grants awards over $40,000
annually to teachers for special and innovative classroom projects.
n Celebration of Excellence honors distinguished graduating
scholars, achievers, and their teachers—celebrating excellence,
drive, and leadership. n Vigilante Academy provides workshops
on life skills and leadership to high school students n Trading
Places provides administrators the opportunity to view leadership responsibilities in the public sector and business and community leaders to experience the role of school administrators.
n Let’s Talk About Great Teachers acknowledges, at the Great
Conversations event, those special teachers who make a difference in the lives of our children every day. n Issues Institutes
provide a forum for Helena public school teachers, students and
community members to learn from leading professionals around
the country. n Harrison Writing Awards focus on the impor-

tance of good writing skills and recognize outstanding young
writers with cash awards. n The Pen & Ink publication features
the creative work of student writers and artists. n Leadership
Institutes provide professional development for district administrators about the latest leadership and management techniques
from experts and community leaders.

2014
WELCOME TO A
CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE!
AND THE
DISTINGUISHED
EDUCATORS
WHO
INSPIRED THEM
A Celebration of Excellence provides public recognition of
extraordinary public school students and outstanding educators.
By honoring achievements of these individuals, the Foundation:
n
n
Demonstrates community appreciation for
the efforts of public school students, educators and parents;
Acknowledges the critical partnership
among schools, home, business and the
community;
n
n
Provides a positive reinforcement for
younger students and a goal for which they
can strive; and
Involves the community and business in
building awareness and confidence in our
public schools.
STUDENTS
A Celebration of Excellence recognizes exceptional students who have demonstrated their efforts in the classroom,
school and in the community day after day, year after year. Distinguished Scholars were selected on the basis of
criteria developed by high school students, teachers and administrators, including grade point average; number of
honors, advanced placement and other higher level courses; total credit hours; activities; and community service.
High school teachers nominated Distinguished Achievers based on excellence in a specific curricular area, leadership,
service or overcoming obstacles to achievement.
EDUCATORS
A Celebration of Excellence honors the Distinguished Educators. Each student identified an educator to recognize
who has had a significant, positive impact on his or her life and wrote a short message about why that educator was
selected. The Helena Education Foundation salutes these fine educators and thanks them for sharing their talents,
knowledge, creativity and love of learning with our youth. They make a difference in our schools and community,
one student and one class at a time.

Upon joining the cross-country and track programs, I remember
seniors raving about Bill Gilbert’s motivational stories. During the
past four years he has definitely lived up to all the praise. Whether
he was convincing me of my potential, helping me through injuries,
or simply bringing the much-needed water to a hard workout, Bill has
been at every practice and meet, always with a kind word to share.
Bill could always tell when I was ready to do my best and he convinced

Kylie Brost is everything you could ever ask for in an elementary

pushed my learning through imagination. Whether it was taking a
trip around the world in a desk-made airplane, or turning the entire
classroom into a jungle, Mrs. Brost always had some fun plan to teach
us in such a way that we didn’t even realize how much we had learned.
The joy she has for teaching is truly inspiring.

Mr. Chart has had a huge influence on me. When I arrived in his

an equation equaled its slope, or that an integral was the area under
the curve. That all changed when I was exposed to Mr. Chart’s upbeat
attitude and passion for teaching that made me excited to learn math
and kept me going when I had to crank out those labor-intensive
problems that I would have cringed at before.

teaching and ability to connect with her students was apparent
from day one. No matter what we were doing in that class, there was
constant praise and encouragement. Ms. Burgess taught me to be
patient and to work hard to reach my goals. Throughout my journey

I couldn’t have asked for a better role model to start the long journey

how to be passionate about whatever it is that I love doing. Schwartzy

When I think of the word education, I think of the word motivation.
The two words go hand in hand, because when you’re motivated to
be educated you have a greater chance of being successful from an
educational standpoint. My motivator was my amazing 5th grade

My first years of high school were not the greatest. My freshman year
I met the most amazing person I could have in my life. Her name is
Mrs. Edwards. She taught me that I could always be better than I
thought, and how to always strive for my best. When I was a freshman,
my goal was to drop out as soon as I turned 16. My attitude was poor.
Without her and my loving family I would have dropped out of high
school. When she came into my life, she changed me, because no
matter how rude and disrespectful I was, she always continued to show
unconditional love. After I met her I was inspired to better myself.
She nurtured me with life lessons and taught me that no matter
what, she would always be there for me. The man I am today would
be nonexistent without her—the man who is going to graduate,
succeed, and go very far in life. Forever I am in her debt; I owe her
my everything, my all and my world.

Second grade was the pinnacle of my adolescent state of confusion: the
transition between following my innocently impulsive heart, to learning
the morals of society. Mrs. Chamberlain was the only adult during this
time who understood my desire to be free, rather than controlled. One of
the rules at Montana City School was “no hats in school.” At that point in
my life, my blue zigzag, striped beanie was the only thing keeping me
grounded. Multiple times, the administration asked me to take off my
hat while I, not understanding their rules, refused. Later that week,
Mrs. Chamberlain proposed to me that I write a letter to the administration, like this: Dear Principal, please let me wear my hat in school. I love it
very much. I promise it won’t hurt anyone. From, Jo. This short letter was my
first step to becoming the independent person that I am today. Mrs.
Chamberlain has been one of the most memorable influences in my life,
and I will forever stay true to the lesson that she taught me that day:
any obstacle can be passed if you are willing to stay true to your heart.

Her personality gives life to the subject, which is why her class is the

other teachers is her authentic concern for each individual student;
not only does she want us to succeed in her class, but in all other

Mary Ann Barbie-Rice has been a wonderful influence on my life.
Through our passion for art she has helped me become the person
I am today, and continues to encourage me to develop into the person
I want to be. “Barbie” is excellent; she encourages her students to look
at things from different perspectives, she dedicates her time to push
her students toward embracing their creativity and goals, and her
excitement for art bubbles over and fills the room with inspiration.
I’m incredibly lucky we get to “graduate” together.

Mr. Proctor (a.k.a. my dad) was first my teacher in my early years,
and now I have him as my AP Literature teacher in my last year of
high school. Every day in class I know that I’m in for an enthusiastic
discussion, whether it’s on a work of literature or the weekly “Fresh
Friday” debate. From teaching me to ride a bike, to helping me write
a literary analysis essay, my dad cultivated my love of learning, and
always brings enthusiasm, a competitive edge, and brio to whatever
we do together.

small portion of his contribution to my education. McCarthy has
dedicated his efforts to the Science Club as a coach and mentor.
For Science Olympiad, McCarthy spends hours after school
mentoring us on various projects: gliders, bridges, cars, astronomy,
towers, booms and fundraising. Throw in Science Bowl (every lunch
for four years) and I’ve spent more time learning from McCarthy
than from anyone else in the district.
