SUP Race/Surfer & World Traveler
Gloucester, MA
Johnny O’
has been
a life long waterman since growing up in the
New England coastal fishing city of “Glostah”,
MA where as a kid he began rowing lobster
boat dinghies and grand banks dories, then
later racing 12 man seine boats in the city’s
famed St. Peters Fiesta. He spent years in the
often frigid North Atlantic Ocean working as
a commercial “lobstah” man, scuba diving and
surfing in water temps that bottom out at 38
degrees and the air temps even colder!
Johnny transitioned to paddling via racing
w/Boston Outrigger starting in 2007 and still
competes today. Six years ago Johnny began
cross training for Outrigger with SUP and soon
most of his focus was directed towards SUP
racing and surfing. In 2011 he went undefeated
in the Atlantic Paddle Board Assoc. “summer
race series” winning the $3.5K cash purse and
placed on the podium in every other NE event
has has entered since. He has also competed
twice @ the BOP in CA, “Port Royal” Puerto
Rico, “Paddle for Humanity” NY and “Surf
to Sound” NC amongst many other events
highlighted below. Just recently Johnny O’ was
selected a member to the Ireland National Team
that will be competing in the ISA “World Paddle
Championships” in February, 2013!
A self admitted lifelong “fitness freak” he
extols the benefits of SUP paddling as “one
stop shopping” for the body and mixes in gym
sessions, yoga, cycling, beach running, surfing,
outrigger paddling and snow shoeing/telemark
skiing as cross training activities. This all in
addition to his rigorous SUP paddling training
regiment.
Johnny O’s Celtic wanderlust has brought
him to live and travel in various regions of the
USA and abroad as a backpacker, surfer and
SUP paddler. In these journeys he has surfed
some epic waves, submerged himself into
some amazing cultures, learned three foreign
languages and has been a volunteer worker
with groups such as Habitat for Humanity and
Soles for the World.
He resides in Gloucester, MA but will be in
Caribbean this winter training/competing in SUP
racing/surfing events and working for Focus
SUP in this region.
