Selenium:
Superstar Mineral
You probably know that calcium is good for bones and teeth,
and that iron builds red blood cells. But what the heck does
selenium do?
Like calcium and iron, selenium is an essential mineral your
body needs to survive. It has one job to do and it’s a big job:
protect your cells from free radicals. Selenium is an important part of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase
– one of the body’s main mechanisms for turning destructive
free radicals into harmless alcohols and water. Because of
its antioxidant role, selenium is critical to a healthy immune
system, may prevent atherosclerosis, and is a powerful anticancer ally.
Immune booster
Cancer ally
All white blood cells – those helpful cells that fight off infection – depend on selenium for them to function. In fact, if
you’re deficient in this trace mineral, your immune system
won’t work as well. Likewise, supplementing with 200 mcg of
selenium per day has been shown to stimulate the function
of white blood cells as well as the thymus, a little organ that
helps develop immune T-cells (the “T” is for thymus).
Selenium is probably most famous for its potential to fight
several types of cancer – including prostate, lung and colon
cancer. Not only have studies shown that death from these
types of cancer is lower among people with higher blood
levels or intakes of selenium, but also that supplementation
with the mineral reduces the likelihood of getting them at all.
Immune-boosting, heart-protecting and cancer-preventing,
all in one little package? Considering that selenium supplements are fairly inexpensive, that’s a lot of bang for your
health buck!
Heart protector
Low selenium intake is linked with heart disease. That’s the
conclusion of three different studies which looked at the selenium levels of folks who had suffered a heart attack. While
this is not conclusive that selenium deficiency causes heart
disease, it does pique the interest of researchers who study
the correlation between minerals and body functions. And
it would make sense that selenium protects against heart
disease because the main cause of plaque build-up in the
arteries is oxidized cholesterol – in other words, cholesterol
that has been attacked by free radicals.
