DEveloping
LEADERs
Created by Leadership Victoria (LV) in 1990, the Williamson
Community Leadership Program (WCLP) was Australia’s
first community leadership program. Its purpose was to grow
and inspire a new generation of leaders.
Today, WCLP continues to nurture new leaders, and it remains
one of Australia’s most sought-after leadership development
experiences.
Since it was established, WCLP has inspired the creation of
similar programs in Australia and abroad, helping to grow a
culture of leadership development worldwide.
Most importantly, WCLP graduates have become some of
Australia’s best and brightest leaders. Literally hundreds of
WCLP graduates now hold senior leadership positions.
Yet leadership amounts to more than a hierarchical position
or success in formal employment. We also work with WCLP
participants to leverage their leadership for the best civic interests,
growing their impact as leaders.

The start of
something bigger
Run part-time over ten months, WCLP develops your leadership
in the context of a selection of critical issues essential to the
leaders of today and tomorrow. Working within a ‘ten-year
horizon’, these issues of the coming decade come to life through
seminars from renowned leaders, field trips, case studies, group
projects and other activities.
This approach grows your leadership practice within the scope
of a bigger society-wide picture that covers many sectors. Many
of society’s most pressing problems – from climate change to
downturns in financial markets – powerfully demonstrate the
interconnectedness of sectors. Now, more than ever, leadership
must be considered in a cross-sectoral context. As a result, you will
learn with and from leaders across the public, private and not-forprofit sectors with your fellow WCLP participants and a range
of presenters who are all experts in their fields.
CREATE NETWORKS – DRIVE CHANGE
The WCLP experience is much more than a one-off course.
At the conclusion of the program, you will join Leadership
Victoria’s renowned Alumni Network. We continue to work
with our Alumni on innovative LV Projects that address issues
demanding exceptional leadership. Recent LV Projects include
aiding the Victorian bushfire recovery effort and establishing
the Timor-Leste Embassy.
As your leadership skills grow, you will be contributing to the
growth of others.
“Through all of the new knowledge and awareness I have gained,
I am better equipped to influence people, agendas and strategic
thinking in my workplace. The program has also opened my eyes,
mind and heart on a range of issues that I would have most likely
remained relatively uninformed on, and would not have explored...
[F]irst-hand contact with the leaders of [disadvantaged] communities
was excellent and inspiring.”

Who participates
in WCLP?
WCLP participants:
• have a track record of 5 to 10 years of achievement in
one or more fields
• have at least 3 years of experience in leadership roles –
within or outside of formal employment
• want to leverage their leadership to drive change –
within their spheres of influence and beyond
To further enrich your learning experience, we ensure that each
participant year group is as diverse as possible. WCLP participants
span a range of fields, age groups and backgrounds. Each year group
also includes leaders from the public, private and not-for-profit
sectors.
“I learnt much about myself
[via WCLP] – my strengths,
my weaknesses and about the
barriers I often put in my way.
I am a better person and a better
leader as a result of being on
the program.”
Anne, WCLP ’10 participant
Entry for WCLP is highly competitive and we select all participants
on merit.

What Will I Learn
through WCLP?
“The program has really formulated my thoughts around leadership
and provided me with fantastic examples in the community.”
Nicole, WCLP ’10 participant
What are the emerging social, cultural and economic issues
of the next ten years?
Regardless of your sector or industry, and regardless of your
personal background and life circumstances, these issues will
impact your leadership and your organisation.
As a WCLP participant, you will develop your leadership skills
in light of these issues.
Informed by cutting-edge thought leaders, as well as the interests
of current participants, we design each year’s program around a
selection of essential issues. Past programs have focused on topics
such as creating a culture of innovation, developing a sustainable
Australia, Australia’s place in a globalised world, governing
Australia in the 21st century, leadership and social change,
and much more.
This content is presented in a proven format that includes:
• The Two-Day Program – a monthly two-day program that
includes on-site tours, presentations from outstanding leaders
in their fields, case studies, workshops and discussion sessions
• evening events that complement the Two-Day Program,
including arts and cultural events
• group projects to put your leadership learnings into practice
• a two-day field trip
• residential retreats that open and close the program.
WCLP offers more than a leadership course. Once you graduate,
your learning will continue when you enter into an ongoing
relationship with Leadership Victoria as a member of the LV
Alumni Network. Via LV Projects and other Alumni activities,
your leadership knowledge and abilities will continue to grow.
“The program delivered in diversity and breadth of participation. It fostered
a secure environment to develop close associations with people of varied
experience and perspective. My year group will remain a valuable support
network to challenge my views and provide opportunities to engage and
be involved.”
Simon, WCLP ’10 participant

Network and
LV Projects
WCLP graduates join LV’s Alumni Network, our esteemed network
of leaders who span a range of industries, sectors and generations.
Over 1000 strong and growing every year, this engaged network
comprises many of Australia’s most outstanding leaders, 95% of
whom are in senior leadership roles. The Network is kept active
via Alumni-specific events, communication and collaboration –
especially LV Projects.
Both current WCLP participants and LV Alumni participate in LV
Projects. These projects provide unique opportunities to exercise
exceptional leadership.

WCLP
Achievements
Over our 20+ year history, LV has worked with hundreds of WCLP
participants and graduates to leverage their leadership for civic
interests. We do this via LV Projects.
Whether carried out by current WCLP participants or LV Alumni,
these projects are powerful examples of exceptional leadership.
Here are just a few examples:
• The gift of an embassy: In conjunction with the Rotary Club of
Melbourne, and with assistance from the Australian and TimorLeste Governments and various sponsors, LV established the
Timor-Leste Embassy in Canberra. Over 20 LV Alumni – all of
them WCLP graduates – helped to bring this historic project to
fruition. In 2010, the embassy was officially handed over to the
people of Timor-Leste as a gift from the people of Australia.
• The Bridge: Devised by an entire year group of 2005 WCLP
participants and now run by the YMCA, The Bridge is a
mentoring and training initiative. It supports young male

offenders during the critical transition period between
prison custody and life post-release. The Bridge provides its
participants with mentoring sessions and work placements.
More than 80 percent of the work placements lead to full-time
employment.
• Thousands of placements in not-for-profit organisations:
Since 1995, our SkillsBank program has been brokering
placements of LV Alumni – including WCLP graduates – in
not-for-profit organisations. Over the 2007 to 2010 period
alone, WCLP graduates participated in 1163 placements to assist
organisations in need. This included 340 board memberships,
247 community projects, 144 strategic advice sessions, and 120
mentoring relationships.

Williamson Community Leadership Program
“An excellent introduction into the complexities that make up our
community and the complex problems that require collaboration across
sectors and bringing our best minds together to work on them… I am
inspired by the people I met in the program as much as by the leaders
from all backgrounds and organisations that we were exposed to.
A truly unique and privileged experience.”
