E-commerce in the spotlight at AMHSA
Symposium
M
any companies are facing the challenges of omni-channel
and e-commerce which is why this year’s Automated Material Handling Systems Association (AMHSA) Symposium will
focus on how the latest developments in automation are benefiting
companies in their e-commerce fulfilment.
An annual feature in the logistics industry calendar and this year taking place on 9 October, the AMHSA Symposium provides a platform
for insightful presentations from leading users plus one-to-one access
to providers of automated handling systems. This year’s conference
covers topics and challenges often encountered when meeting the
specific demands associated with the e-tail supply chain. Speakers
who have first-hand experience of these demands and have met and
satisfied these challenges will give insight into what to watch out for
and how to solve the many traps and issues.
Importantly, the day also offers delegates plenty of opportunities for informal networking with fellow logistics professionals and
automated solutions specialists; this is a rare opportunity to gain access to users, experts and solutions providers all at one event.
The day will culminate in a Gala Dinner, hosted by AMHSA, furthering the discussions and opportunities for networking with the
e-commerce specialists.
AMHSA’s President, Andy Pilkington, explains, “At AMHSA we’re keen to pass on the experience and knowledge of both our
members and also of current users who can give first-hand details on what can be done and how it benefits a business. E-commerce is something almost every company has to take on board and this event will look at the various key aspects such as storage, pre-picking, order fulfilment, sortation, packing and distribution. A wealth of ideas and solutions will be presented which will
give guidance to small and large companies on how to solve current or future issues.”
Being held on 9 October at the Hinckley Island Hotel in Leicestershire, the 2014 AMHSA Symposium is expected to attract more
than 100 delegates from the UK and overseas. “E-commerce is not a simple bolt-on to a company and to follow such a path can
be fraught,” adds Andy Pilkington. “The conference programme is designed to provide information by way of presentations and
case studies that will enable companies to rise to the challenge, which will make the event one not to be missed.”

ENGLAND
E
ngland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island with coastlines washed by the
waters of the Atlantic Ocean via the Celtic, Irish and North Seas. The name “England” is derived from the Old English name
Englaland, which means “land of the Angles”.
As part of the United Kingdom, the basic political system in England is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary system.
There has not been a Government of England since 1707, when the Acts of Union 1707, putting into effect the terms of the Treaty
of Union, joined England and Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. Before the union England was ruled by its monarch
and the Parliament of England. Today England is governed directly by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The current English
monarch is Queen Elizabeth II.
The economy of England is regards as a mixed market economy that has adopted many free market principles, yet maintains an
advanced social welfare infrastructure. The economy is one of the largest in the world. The English have taken to on-line shopping
with greater enthusiasm than most of the world, making e-commerce a major factor in logistics and supply chain developments.
Start-up companies have thrived by serving this new sector, driven by the challenge of handling final mile deliveries on time and
at minimum cost.
The country is well served by a largely toll-free network of motorways, although congestion is a constant factor around the leading
conurbations. Although rail freight has a great deal of support and several companies promoting their services, minimal government support has limited its growth, with around 13% of goods – mainly bulk products – travelling by rail.
