Sketch to Stretch — Notetaking Activity
Some people say that a picture is worth a thousand words, so when you’re taking notes about a reading passage, try sketching some
drawings instead of writing everything in words. Taking notes and drawing pictures helps you remember what you read. It stretches your
brain. Try it! Make a simple chart in your notebook, like the one below. Add more rows for the other regions listed on Pages 2 and 3. Fill in
the boxes with drawings and notes.

American Indians
Alana and Jackson told us about the Anasazi, but what about other American Indians? Some of your ancestors could have been
roaming our continent 10,000 years ago! Early people left clues all over North America about how they lived. Every time a new
object is found, we learn more about people and places of the past.

Rumination and Contemplation:
Southeast
What’s in a Name?
he Southeast stretches from Texas to the
Atlantic Ocean. American Indians in this area
include the Caddo, Natchez, Cherokee, Creek,
Timucua and Seminole.
The long, warm summers and mild winters made
growing plants like corn, squash, beans and pumpkins
easy. Men hunted deer, alligator, turkey and turtles.
People wore bone and shell jewelry or tattooed
their bodies to show their importance. They built
different kinds of houses, mostly of wood with
thatched roofs. Chickees (Seminole houses) had
open sides and thatched palm roofs.
Southeastern people built mounds for burial
grounds and buildings. Along the coast many mounds
were middens, piles of shells leftover from lots
and lots of meals. Several middens still exist in
the Southeast. The other day Jackson and Alana
climbed to the top of Turtle Mound, a midden at
Canaveral Seashore National Park in Florida. It’s
almost 50 feet high!
ost of us have heard of vehicles
called Cherokee or Winnebago.
Have you heard of sports teams

Indians? Obviously, these names
are based on American Indian
tribes. Some people say that
using American Indian names
is respectful because they
focus on bravery, courage
and skill. Others believe
the names make it seem
like American Indians only
ZDQWWRÀJKW5HFHQWO\
Sports Illustrated magazine
did a survey and found that
78% of sports fans and
American Indians want to keep
the names.

Rumination and Contemplation:
Southeast
What’s in a Name?
he Southeast stretches from Texas to the
Atlantic Ocean. American Indians in this area
include the Caddo, Natchez, Cherokee, Creek,
Timucua and Seminole.
The long, warm summers and mild winters made
growing plants like corn, squash, beans and pumpkins
easy. Men hunted deer, alligator, turkey and turtles.
People wore bone and shell jewelry or tattooed
their bodies to show their importance. They built
different kinds of houses, mostly of wood with
thatched roofs. Chickees (Seminole houses) had
open sides and thatched palm roofs.
Southeastern people built mounds for burial
grounds and buildings. Along the coast many mounds
were middens, piles of shells leftover from lots
and lots of meals. Several middens still exist in
the Southeast. The other day Jackson and Alana
climbed to the top of Turtle Mound, a midden at
Canaveral Seashore National Park in Florida. It’s
almost 50 feet high!
ost of us have heard of vehicles
called Cherokee or Winnebago.
Have you heard of sports teams

Indians? Obviously, these names
are based on American Indian
tribes. Some people say that
using American Indian names
is respectful because they
focus on bravery, courage
and skill. Others believe
the names make it seem
like American Indians only
ZDQWWRÀJKW5HFHQWO\
Sports Illustrated magazine
did a survey and found that
78% of sports fans and
American Indians want to keep
the names.

The Case of the Disappearing Anasazi
Once again Alana and Jackson are in a different place and time, thanks to Alana’s amazing,
time-traveling camera. Let’s listen in on their conversation and find out where they are!
