The YMCA has been selected to offer the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA physical activity and well-being
program that addresses the special wants, needs and interests of cancer survivors. LIVESTRONG
at the YMCA is the result of a multi-year partnership between YMCA of the USA and LIVESTRONG.
These programs are designed to assist cancer survivors through their journey beginning at the
time of diagnosis. The YMCA is committed to enhancing the quality of life for cancer survivors by
helping them regain control of their health and well being during the following treatment.
“The thing I took away from LIVESTRONG was meeting the great people, both the trainers
and the friends I met. I have met two very good friends from the group. We meet for dinner once
a month and it gives us someone to talk to after going through the same thing.” - LIVESTRONG

The FMS generates a score, which is used to target problems and track your progress. This

HEALTHY LIVING - SENIOR ACTIVITIES
SENIOR ACTIVITIES
Water fitness classes can benefit individuals who
are just starting to exercise, as well as those who
would like a more intense workout (each person
exercises at his/her own pace). Water exercises put
less stress on joints than land exercises because the
effects of gravity are minimized. Working against
water resistance improves muscle strength and tone
and cardiorespiratory endurance. Swimming skills
are not needed for participation.
Aquatic Staff
Karen Thie has been an Aquatic Director since 1995
and has been at the Burlington Y since 2006. She
is a 1992 graduate of Iowa State University with a
BA in Leisure Studies. She is faculty with the YMCA
of the USA for YMCA Lifeguards, Swimming Lessons
and is an instructor in CPR, First Aid, and Emergency
Oxygen Administration. Karen has been involved in
teaching aquatic classes for over 25 years.
Special Groups
Large groups that consistently come to the pool must
be arranged with the Aquatic Director in advance.
Shallow-Water Workout
This full-body workout is a combination of
cardiorespiratory endurance, muscle conditioning,
and interval training. You do not need to put your
head under water, but your hair may get wet.
Ages: 14 and up
Schedule: Monday-Friday 9:00 – 10:00 am
This is a full-body workout with a combination
of cardiorespiratory endurance, muscle
conditioning, and interval training. It is
conducted in both shallow and deep water.

an increased range of motion using nonimpact movements. Your hair may get wet in
this class. Ages: 8-13 with parent; Ages 14
and up will not need a parent present.
Schedule: Tuesday & Thursday 5:30-6:30pm
Lap Swim

CIRCLE SWIMMING
What is Circle Swimming?
Circle Swimming is basically Follow the
Leader and is used when there are 2 or more
swimmers wanting to use the same lane.
Always check with the other swimmer(s) to
let them know you would like to circle swim.
After getting the go ahead, enter the water.
Always swim on the right side of the lane. Be
sure not to swim over the black line, as this
will be used as a sort of passing lane.
For safety reasons, leave a 5-10 second
interval between you and the swimmer in
front of you. If you need to pass the swimmer
in front of you, carefully check for oncoming
swimmers. Then swim out and around and
back in to your lane quickly, always checking
for oncoming swimmers, as they have the
right of way.
When you get to the wall to turn, do so
quickly and get off to the right side of the
lane. If you stop to rest get as far into the
corner of the lane as possible and watch out
for your fellow swimmers.

AQUATICS
SHRIMP - Age: 6 - 8 months. This is an introduction
to the aquatic environment for parents and
their infants. Parents are encouraged to develop
appropriate expectations for their children’s
performance in the water. They learn basic aquatic
safety and have a positive experience with their
child that helps them bond.
KIPPER - Age: 9 - 12 months. This level continues
to provide positive aquatic experiences for parents
and infants. The infants learn basic skills and have
fun playing with toys and flotation devices. Parents
review and learn more about basic aquatic safety.
INIA - Age: 13 - 23 months. Children do more
independent exploration of the aquatic environment
with help from their parents. The parents again
review and learn additional information about
aquatic safety. The program provides opportunities
for parent/child teams to socialize with each other.
PERCH - Age: 24 - 36 months. Children start
moving more independently through the water under
their parents’ guidance. Parents learn more about
aquatic and boating safety, and children begin to
learn something about these topics as well. At this
point the instructor begins to prepare the children
to work directly with an instructor on their own.
