ill Hybels, founding pastor of Willow Creek
Community Church, has a saying that I have long
held as very true, “The local church is the hope of the
world.” A few years ago he extended that thought as he
said, “There is nothing like the local church when the local
church is working right!”
With these words as a backdrop I want to say to our
community here at 1310 Shepherd Drive, “Way to be the
local church!” The dedication, intensity, compassion,
sincerity, and joy while trusting the promises of God are all
over this place. You are to be commended for working
together and getting it right! AND core to this journey is the
exploration into and development of what it means to be
generous. This has been a foundational part of this journey
that has allowed Good Shepherd, the local church, to be the
hope of the world. As a community we have listened to what
God has said a generous life looks like and responded.
“Generosity is a way of life” is one of our core values, and
this community has stepped up big time and has allowed
God to help it “work right.”

The future is filled with God-directed exploration. As teams
are being formed to explore how we reach more people
through worship, care in extraordinary ways for our children,
reach an often-disenfranchised part of our community--those
with special needs children, develop the deepening faith life
found in small groups, reach those crying out for help with
our missions gifts, and stay strong as a body financially while
we forward ministry to all ages, there is an exciting journey
ahead!
I want to encourage you not to sit on the sidelines or become
a spectator to this adventure of a lifetime. Respond with joy
as you serve, engage in much-needed conversation, and
continue to bring your best financial gifts of generosity to the
journey. Worship regularly, pray with fervor, and be the local
church… the hope of the world!
Well done, good and faithful servants… . Now is the time
that God calls us to continue the journey.

New Member
Orientation Classes
Good Shepherd invites all visitors to learn more about our church family by attending a New Member Orientation. Each orientation has three
class sessions taught by our pastors and is offered in
February, June and October each year.



The orientation sessions provide the opportunity to:
Build relationships with our pastors, staff and other members.
 Learn our vision, purpose and core values.
Understand our spiritual foundations and how they are lived out in practice and sacrament.
Discover what it means to become a member at Good Shepherd: connecting through worship, learning,
caring, fellowship and outreach.
Engage in the journey of Good Shepherd--where we’ve been and the vision for the future.
Following each orientation, new members are celebrated on Recognition Weekend during worship and at a special
luncheon. Look for specific dates of the next orientation in the weekly prayer and action guide.

A little update on Christus:
We are building a new website for the church, christuscamden.org. It is up and running but we are in the process
of adding content, but we invite you to check it out. We are currently in the middle of our Summer VBS: Hunger
Body and Soul. We are bless with an abundance of neighborhood children (we had to stop registration at 48 to fit
in the bus and church van for trips). We will have some pictures from the VBS posted next week. I think some
are
already out on Facebook: Christus Lutheran Church. It is a joy to work with the dedicated all volunteer staff of the
VBS, and it’s quite a learning experience for us all as we grow together in Christian community and give up ourselves to one goal, sharing the love of Christ with our neighbors.
In addition, we are getting ready to start a new school year at Christus Academy. We graduated all 3 Seniors last
June all of whom start college next month. You may wonder why students elect a small Christian family
environment to the traditional high school experience. Sometimes that is because their parents are committed to
Christian education. More often than not, however, it’s because they or their families have been victims of
violence. Most of our students have known someone who died in the streets, some of them have lost siblings
and/or parents. I know that Chicago is no stranger to gun violence and it’s devastating aftermath. Many of our
students have been bullying and are seeking a safe place to learn. Others have just not done well in the underperforming Camden public schools. The school website is christusacademy.org. We are hoping to rebuild this website soon, so we haven’t updated it this summer. I’ll let you know when the new site is up.

Naperville Area Crop Walk
is an ecumenical and
interfaith effort of
nearly 20 area congregations and organizations to help
hungry families in
our community and around the world. The
annual walk distributes funds to
LOAVES and Fishes food pantry and the
Northern Illinois Food Bank and helps hungry
around the world through Church World Service.

es, the days are getting shorter, the cool breeze
of Autumn is in the air, and the Harvest Moon
colored our night sky with incredible beauty. Pumpkin
Spice Lattes are on the menu board of your local
coffee shop, but have you heard your favorite
Christmas Carol playing yet on your local radio
station? Probably not, but planning is underway for
the Operation Christmas Child Ministry held yearly at
Good Shepherd Church. Last year our church family
packed nearly 700 shoeboxes, and we pray for even
more this year!!!! This powerful ministry brings more
than shoeboxes filled with hygiene products, school
supplies, and toys to children in crisis. It provides joy,
smiles, hope, and most of all the Good News of Jesus
Christ to children all over the world. This year the
National Collection Week is November 17th - 24th.
Please be part of this rewarding ministry, and spread
God’s love and grace to one of His children. Look for

running as part of “Team World
Vision” to raise money to build water
wells in Africa. $50 provides a lifetime
of water for one person!
RTA is hosting a two-day work event on
Monday, Oct. 13 and Tuesday, Oct. 14
from 8:00am – 4:00pm.
We will be working on two homes in Aurora, doing
exterior painting, window installation, building a back
porch and installing a walk-in shower. Skilled and
unskilled workers are needed to help these
wonderful homeowners stay in their homes safely.
Supplies and LUNCH will be provided.

Quilts – A Mission of Love!
W
hen God calls us to something, it not only transforms the world,
it also transforms us.

Recently, 102 quilts were dedicated during worship services. Most of
the quilts, made by our Quilt Ministry team, are destined for distribution
by Lutheran World Relief (LWR) and its affiliates to people in need
around the world--people affected by war,
disasters, and poverty. A quilt may soon be used
in a third world hospital, might wrap an orphan,
could be used as a sack to carry a refugee’s goods,
serve as a baby carrier, may become a sunshade
or a warm blanket, or be used as a room divider.
Challenged by a growing need for quilts, efforts around the country
were doubled in the last year. Some groups met more frequently and
invited friends to join. Summer camps joined in, making hundreds of
quilts over the course of several weeks. One
church invited college students to come make
quilts as part of their service projects.
“The Quilts you provided show how loving and
empathetic you are,” said the officer in charge of the
Nunge home for the disabled, near Dar Es Salaam,
Tanzania. “The residents have been so comforted
by the materials you provided. Thank you very
much, and may God bless you.”
Nearly 490,000 quilts were distributed last year by
LWR. Good Shepherd is one of many churches
with a Quilt Ministry. God’s love is shown with each
quilt, and all this quilting is having a powerful
impact on the world.

How you can help The Quilt Ministry team welcomes helpers on

way to help is to sew one or more quilt tops. Finished size should be 60
X 80 inches made of cotton material, any design. Twelve 21-inch
squares sewn together is one easy option. Deliver the tops to the
church any time. Another way to help is to donate large pieces (1/4
yard or bigger) of cotton fabric. Contact the church office or Linda

The impact isn’t just on the other side of the ocean. According to
LWR, “Over and over, we’ve heard how the Quilt Campaign
transformed your congregations, quilting groups, communities and
families. Through this project, we’ve been reminded that when God
calls us to something, it not only transforms the world but transforms

The Ebola crisis needs your help
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
In the past several months, the Ebola outbreak has claimed thousands of lives. The virus has spread rapidly, and
with no approved vaccine and a high fatality rate, the World Health Organization is now calling it "one of the
world’s most lethal diseases." Ebola has spread to multiple countries, the hardest hit being Liberia, Sierra Leone
and Guinea.
In addition to health care, one of the most urgent needs is food. As people in affected areas are quarantined to
their homes, towns are being shut down to limit the spread of the disease and people are not able to work, harvest
crops or purchase food. The shipment of food has also stopped because people from other countries fear
contracting the virus.
“We need food,” says the Rev. D. Jensen Seyenkulo, bishop of the Lutheran Church in Liberia. "There is a saying
now: 'If we don’t die of Ebola, we will die of starvation.'"
You can help. Your gifts to the Ebola Outbreak Response will be used, 100 percent, to assist those
impacted by this crisis. Our partners and companion churches have requested our help in responding to the
outbreak with food distributions, shipment of personal protective equipment, training health workers, outreach
through education about prevention, and construction of an isolation unit at Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing
in Liberia.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and its predecessor church have walked with the people of
Liberia for more than 150 years. Our long-standing relationship with our companions in Liberia and Sierra Leone
provides a strong foundation to respond holistically to the needs of those who are suffering and living with the
threat of Ebola.

Preschool is off to a Great Start
Enrollment continues to grow with 112 students starting off the 2014-2015
school year. The students are led by 20 staff. Limited openings are
available, for the current year, in the afternoon for 3-5 year olds. Please

A fundraiser that does not require spending additional money
Gift Cards are back!
What are they?
The Manna Group acts on behalf of nonprofit organizations to purchase large numbers of cards from
grocery stores, restaurants, department stores and other retailers. Our school buys the cards at a
discount and resells them at face value. A purchase of a Manna card channels 2 – 30% of the face value
of the card to the preschool! Last year gift card sales brought the preschool over $3000!
How does the program work at Good Shepherd?
Order forms are available at the Connect Center. Orders are due on Sunday, October 19th and
November 16th. Please include your check made payable to Good Shepherd Lutheran Preschool.
Some of the cards are available for cash and carry. Check with the preschool office to see what is
available. Downtown Naperville gift cards are also available, along with hundreds of other options,
including Target, Amazon.com, Whole Foods, Mariano’s Fresh Market and Panera Bread.

Student Ministries
6th - 12th grade
Hope you made it for the “For Your Glory” album release by the Eleven:Eleven Band, Friday, August 1st.
The night started with a family tailgate in the parking lot with food, games and fellowship. The band
prepared a night of worship with familiar tunes and and a whole set of original songs for a packed out
worship center. Pastor Glen taught on the topic of surrender, as it is the album’s theme. The project
started as music for the people of Good Shepherd; Hammer and LJ wrote the songs with the
congregation in mind. The heart for the album was that God be praised and that we would all surrender
day to day to God who offers an abundant life of freedom! “For Your Glory” is available for purchase in
the Cornerstone Café and is available on iTunes. Thank you to everyone who supported the wonderful
evening and we hope you enjoy the album!

Blessing of the Backpacks” was on August 25th this year. This was a time for students to receive prayer and
encouragement for the new school year. Each student was given a tag for his backpack, with a paraphrase of
Matthew 28:19-20, reminding them that God is always with them, even at school. Matthew 28:19-20 says,
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always,
to the very end of the age.”

Fall Bash:
Color Fest 2014 was an
amazing color celebration of
God’s promises on September
7th. In Genesis 9:13 God said,
“I will put my rainbow in the
clouds to be a sign of my
promise to the earth.” Student
Ministries FUEL and IGNITE
kicked off their year with this
proclamation. 268 students
attended that evening with over
70 adult volunteers. The
values of Good Shepherd were displayed in the student-led
worship, community building opportunities, friends invited by
the car loads, students and adults engaging in fun activities
and God being praised with every color powder blast! Student
Ministries vision is to partner with parents to raise students
who know, love and serve God. This year we are encouraging
ministry small groups and families to embark on a journey into
God’s word. Spiritual growth is expected and we find the Bible
is the number one catalyst for growth in all of us. Join us as we
start a whole new year in learning
more about our AWESOME God!

empowered and get real life parenting tools?
Please join KidsMatter for a
ParentsMatterToo Conversation Circle near you this Fall!
What are Conversation Circles? A group of 8 to 12 parents meet in various locations in the
Naperville area to engage with a trained facilitator and other parents with similar concerns,
learning effective tools in a safe and comfortable atmosphere. This four week, free series
offers positive, practical strategies for parents with children and teens of all ages to become
more confident and empowered parents as we raise resilient kids that can find balance and
strength amidst the challenges and temptations of everyday difficult choices. We encourage
honest discussions about everyday parenting, as we learn to communicate more effectively
with our kids and teens, as well as parenting with the hard topics like drug and alcohol
misuse, peer pressure and stress and anxiety.
There are sessions for:

parents of Junior High and High School Students,
parents of Junior High and High School Students,
parents of Elementary School Kids,
parents of 10-14 Year Olds, and
parents of High School Teens

Scrap n Time
Come meet new
friends on the
Second Saturday of
each month right
here at Good
Shepherd. At Scrap
n Time we have
learned that working
with pretty paper is great fun, especially if you get to
work with friends. Scrap n Time is the place to make
cards, sort those many pictures you have in boxes and
then put them into albums, or you might like to do
quilling, or you may have another paper project you like.
We work with all sizes and shapes of scrap papers to
make something the family and others will enjoy. You
bring your project supplies and lunch and there will be a
table for you to work at and someone will bring dessert
for all to enjoy. For $5.00 (this goes toward missions the
church is involved with), we will supply some tools for
anyone to use and you can enjoy the hours of 9 to 4 the
second Saturday of each month in rooms 116-117 to
work on your project while with friends.

Time for Pie!

Wednesday Thanksgiving Eve
service in the Activity Center, for the
annual “Pie Thing.”
Bring your favorite homemade pie,
try a new recipe or buy one from a
store...all are welcome.
If you are interested in serving cider,
coffee, slicing the pies, or setting up/
cleaning up, please look for these
opportunities in the bulletin in
November.
