When I was in middle school (before PCs) it was predicted that
televisions would become computers, videophones and control
your house utilities. This was supposed to happen in the early
1980’s. My first Texas Instruments calculator cost over $50. Today,
I’ve received better calculators in the mail for free. Even though
the technology and information age has made many remarkable
accomplishments, some areas have made little progress.
In the early 1980’s, the Piezoelectric braille cell in a refreshable
braille notetaker was being mass produced, but unlike my
calculator, this price has not dropped much over the past 25
years, and the basic piezo design has changed very little.
We started the Center for Braille Innovation (CBI) last October
for a number of reasons. Most importantly it recognizes
that new technologies are creating another era in product
advancements in the world. YouTube, Facebook, MySpace,
LinkedIn, and Twitter are defining the digisphere. National Braille
Press must be in tune to all of these new discoveries and be
positioned to adapt and create changes for electronic braille.
CBI is the vehicle that ties in all of our activities including
production efficiencies, tactiles, new products, and our
strategic plan. It is the filter and source to discover
how emerging technologies and innovative designs can
make improvements to our core mission, because the
constant, basic building block is the same no matter what
media it evolves into…braille is the key to literacy.
As National Braille Press moves forward we are optimistic
about the direction we are heading and know that our
success is directly related to our customers and donors.

There is a country where the literacy rate in one population has dropped
from 50% to 12%. Is this Nepal? Ethiopia? Afghanistan? No, that country
is the United States. And the people affected are blind children and adults.
Nearly 90% of blind children in America are
not learning to read braille—the only medium
for blind people to become truly literate.
But what about technology? Does that replace braille?
Have computers replaced print? No.
According to The Jernigan Institute:
Eighty-nine percent of teachers of blind students
agree that technology should be used as a
supplement to braille rather than as a replacement.
National Braille Press has developed the Center
for Braille Innovation to harness the power
of technology to support braille literacy.
Blind children and adults need to keep pace with our
fast-moving, digital world. Through the Center for
Braille Innovation, National Braille Press will provide
tactile information faster and more efficiently—
through tactile graphics, through electronic braille,
and through new technologies that allow blind
people to keep pace with the world around them.
Will technology replace storybooks that ignite
the imagination, textbooks that fuel the mind, or
computer manuals to promote independent living?
Of course not! But through technology we will:
produce print/braille storybooks faster
help teach children braille more effectively

the visual world

more textbooks faster
◆ develop new and less expensive tools
for reading electronic braille

I have always believed in the power of words. Although I was
born blind, my family found me a supportive residential school
when I was a young girl, and so began my love of learning.
I remember when I was a young girl I was so proud of the fact that I could not
only read stories that would take me on different adventures, but that I could also
use a slate and stylus to harness the power of words and create my own stories!
I also remember the frustration of trying to find certain books my sighted peers were
reading that weren’t available to me in braille. But that didn’t stop me. I continued
to search out new outlets. I took part in the chorus during elementary school and
then took up piano and guitar and I continue to use braille for music playing and
singing at volunteer venues to this day. I like to express myself through my music and
would not have been able to do that if I had never learned to read through braille.
When I got older and entered college I pursued another love, the Spanish language. I
studied it as an undergrad, traveled to Spain and had the most amazing time. It affected
me so much I decided to pursue my Masters in Spanish and when I graduated from
college in 1967, I went to Perkins School for the Blind to teach Conversational Spanish. I
traveled to Peru and taught there as well. I witnessed blind children, who had no books
available to them, take the one copy we had available
and spend days brailling their own copy with a slate
and stylus. These are the moments that moved me
to continue my career as a teacher and help blind
children understand the world of independence they
have ahead of them once they learn to read braille.

I’m a passionate braille reader and have been since I picked up
my first book as a very young girl. I was born premature which
caused my blindness but I’ve never let that hold me back. In fact,
by the third grade I was such an avid student, I had read all the
braille books available to my age group.
My mother campaigned for my school to make more books available to me in
braille, and I am grateful to her for her example. Listening to books on tape never
gave me the same rewarding experience as reading braille. I love opening a book
and feeling the braille with my fingertips. Through my love of reading and story
telling I began to explore writing as well. I began sharing my experience as a blind
teenager in an online forum. I am now a featured blogger on a well-being website. I
would never have been able to pursue my love of writing if it wasn’t for braille.
My mother has always been my biggest supporter. She taught me the importance of
fighting for your rights and letting your voice be heard
because she constantly advocated to the school system for
my education. I worry that as I go off to college there will
be fewer materials available to me in braille. I plan to go
to school to study civil rights law so I can continue to fight
for the rights of those that need their voice to be heard.

in philanthropy
Over $2.6 million donated to and raised for National
Braille Press in eight years. This accomplishment
belongs to Lumber Liquidators’ founder and CEO, Tom
Sullivan, whose commitment to the nonprofit community
has helped countless children and their families.
Tom’s work on our behalf centers around our
annual Hands On! Books for Blind Children gala.
The 2009 event on October 16 will mark his
fourth year as co-chair. At last year’s gala,
our president, Brian MacDonald, presented
Tom with the first President’s Award for
his steadfast dedication to our work.
Tom and Lumber Liquidators have also made
their mark on several of our children’s books,
sponsoring a print/braille book by Dr. Seuss,
Oh, The Places You’ll Go!, and two braille editions
of the popular Harry Potter books. Tom even
jumped in on one of our Harry Potter production
lines to help ensure that National Braille Press
could release the braille version of the book
on the same day as the print version. We are

Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight
Foundation is committed to improving
the lives of blind and visually-impaired
people and has helped National Braille
Press to produce braille books, support
children’s literacy, and explore new
innovations. Most recently, RDPFS
became one of the first supporters of
our Center for Braille Innovation.
They awarded a grant to help
establish this new braille
technology and training
center and have also pledged
a $25,000 challenge grant to
help National Braille Press
inspire matching donations.
Many other successful projects at National Braille
Press have benefited from the generosity of
RDPFS. An expansion grant served as a catalyst for
expanding our ReadBooks! Because Braille Matters
programs nationwide. RDPFS also sponsored our
tactile graphics study, which led us to develop a
new book, Because Pictures Matter. This guide to
tactile graphics for parents of blind children is now
a core element of the ReadBooks! book bags. Many

blind children on the path to a lifetime of literacy.

Sponsor of two of National Braille Press’s

the Ruth Schuman Charitable Trust was
already an important National Braille
Press partner when one of the Schuman
trustees came to us with a dilemma.
Sue Ammeter, recently diagnosed with breast cancer,
called to find post-diagnosis cancer materials in an
accessible format. After discovering that there were
none available, Sue, National Braille Press, and the
Ruth Schuman Charitable Trust collaborated to make
two publications—For Women Facing Breast Cancer and
After Diagnosis: Prostate Cancer—available in braille.
Underwriting these cancer and technology publications
is a natural fit for the Ruth Schuman Charitable
Trust, whose mission is to assist with projects that
benefit blind people. All of the publications funded
by the Trust have flown off our shelves and gone to
a second printing. The Ruth Schuman Charitable
Trust has made it possible for braille readers to
have vital information at their finger tips.

Braille for Life Alliance
“It is in my nature that things must fit together right,” asserts Bill Raeder
in his usual forthright manner. “I liked running a business and I wanted
to improve the human condition on a societal level, so my work at NBP
was a perfect fit.” Thus, for 32 years, Bill’s vision ensured that National
Braille Press continually made new advances in braille production,
publishing, and marketing, all for the promotion of literacy for the blind.
“It is good” he says “to hold nonprofits’ feet to the fire to
be responsive to market forces. But, given the vagaries
of the market, it is senseless for a nonprofit to rely solely
on hand-to-mouth annual revenue. Long-term financial
planning is key.” Acting on this thought and furthering
his legacy, Bill gave a challenge gift upon his retirement
for the establishment of a planned giving program.
The Board of Trustees has enthusiastically responded to the
challenge by establishing just such a program to receive
and manage gifts from wills as well as gifts that generate
income—such as charitable gift annuities, remainder
trusts, and lead trusts. Bill is now the first to establish a
gift annuity with the Press. In exchange for his gift, he will
receive a fixed annual income of 8.4% for the rest of his life.
“I may no longer have the endurance to make a
difference in day-to-day operations, but I can make
this contribution to build financial strength for the
future. I am not wealthy, so my gift may not seem
earth shattering, but it can be the seed for growing
the planned giving program and ensuring a longterm revenue plan for National Braille Press.”

The 2009 Vision 5K Run and Walk found a
new home at Boston College with the campus
offering a beautiful course. The Vision 5K was
created to share the message of empowerment
and of embracing possibilities.

Books for Blind Children gala on October 24, 2008.
Boston College student Stephanie Fernandes kicked off
the program with a compelling speech, discussing how
imperative it is for blind children to be in a supportive
community. German founder of the Tibetan non-profit Braille
Without Borders, Sabriye Tenberken, was on hand at the gala
to accept the 2008 Hands On! Award. Tenberken has tirelessly
worked to educate blind children in Tibet and India, creating
the Tibetan braille code, and teaching entrepreneurial
skills as well as the fundamentals in multiple languages.
The event, hosted by comedienne Lily
Tomlin, brought together many of Boston’s

auction, which featured items ranging from use of
the Walsh Brother’s private suite at a Red Sox game
to naming a character in a Robert Parker novel,
were extremely successful, raising over $95,000.
