Child’s Play Becomes Fine Art
The Art of the Brick presents LEGO bricks in a whole
new light, demonstrating the potential of creativity and
the power of imagination.
®
The Art of the Brick features over 100 works by
contemporary artist Nathan Sawaya. But rather than
paint and canvas, these masterpieces are made
entirely of LEGO bricks.
These toys provide sensory
learning, engineering lessons
and unbridled creativity.
The exhibit features re-imagined
versions of masterpieces including
Van Gogh’s Starry Night and
Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
Open October 23 - May 8
Fun Facts
LEGO bricks have been used in
engineering and other technical
fields to do real design and science.
The bricks produced today have the
same bumps and holes, and can still
interlock with those produced in 1958.

billionth of a meter. Learn about how we use nano science to
study things that are too small to see, like atoms and molecules.
Complete up to six experiments and explore the behavior of
atoms and molecules on the nano scale.
Strong reading skills are necessary to follow directions and
perform experiments.
Forensics: The Science of Crime ES Grades 5-8

specimens from our collections. Test your knowledge of
everyday uses of minerals, then examine, test and classify
specimens to learn their true identities.
Incredible Insects ES Grades 1-5
Get up close with the creatures that make up Earth’s
largest population. Learn the characteristics of insects, see
the world through the eyes of a fly and learn amazing facts
about insect defense, including camouflage and mimicry.
This program comes complete with live insects and mounted
insect specimens from across the globe.
Jerusalem and the Dead Sea Scrolls—
Then & Now! Grades 4-8
Learn about the history and diversity of Jerusalem by watching
a short video. Explore the history and science behind Iron Gall
Ink and ancient and modern manuscript materials. Recreate a
message using a concordance, which is the same method
scholars from the Cincinnati campus of Hebrew Union College
used to recreate sections of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Use DNA to
match sections of a document together the same way researchers
now match together sections of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
The Reasons for the Seasons ES Grades 1-5
Why are spring and summer warm while winter and fall
are cool? Use a globe to rotate, revolve, learn about the
seasons and understand how we experience them.
Create the sounds of spring and explore mounted animal
specimens from our collections. Win a seasonal prize by
identifying a special visitor that left behind scat and tracks.
Taxonomic Detectives ES Grades 4-8
Classification isn’t as mysterious as it sounds! Start off with
some simple classification activities, then use clues based on
eye placement and teeth type to inspect real animal skulls.
Follow a dichotomous key to determine the skulls’ identity
from the taxonomic order right down to the species.
Thinking Green? ES Grades 5-8
We use energy every day, but where does it come from?
Review energy types, explore personal energy usage and
compare renewable and non-renewable sources of electricity.
Use renewable energy kits to experiment with wind turbines and
solar panels. Recommended program length is 75 minutes.

Fundamentals of Inquiry
Get back to the basics of teaching science to your students!
Join us for hands-on, team-oriented workshops developed
specifically for educators interested in exploring the theory
and practice of inquiry-based teaching with STEM applications.
These 90-minute workshops illuminate the power of learning
science content through inquiry and introduce strategies for
providing inquiry-based experiences in the classroom.
Comparing Approaches to Hands-On Science
Children approach learning about science in different ways.
Educators should be able to vary their approaches to meet
the needs of every student. Experience three approaches to
teaching science in your classroom.
Process Skills - Children young and old use the same
process skills when learning science. Experience them in this
hands-on workshop that will foster your student’s interest and
success in science.
Subtle Shifts - In order to help learners develop the process
skills needed for science exploration and inquiry, teachers
gradually shift to giving learners more responsibility for using
these skills in science activities. Practice making small shifts in
existing activities to help learners strengthen the process skills
needed for scientific inquiry.
Interested in having a Fundamentals of Inquiry workshop at
your location? We’re able to cater our workshops to your
schools’ needs with activities chosen by you!
Visit cincymuseum.org/educators/ongoinglearning for
workshop dates and additional information. For more
information concerning these workshop opportunities please
