February 2013 President’s Message
As this goes to printing, over half of the winter is behind us and the Ground Hog is
predicting an early spring. Serves me right for buying a snow blower this fall.
First, I would like to thank our wonderful speakers for January who stepped up
after the Town of North Hempstead Highway Department again decided they
would not attend. First, a long time supporter of the organization, Bruce Chester
of the Chester Agency located at 497 Westbury Avenue was informative with
regards to home owners insurance and storm damage. Then, Carle Place Water
District Chairman Timothy Stellato assisted by Commissioners Larry Zaino and
Peter Meade explained the various components of the Carle Place Bond Issue vote
that was being held later in the month at the Town of North Hempstead meeting.
Before I get to the February meeting topics, I would like to ask all to check out the
membership listing in the publication. Thanks to a suggestion from a member, we
have added the last month that families are members as a reminder for renewal.
We have room to grow on that listing and hope you will take the time to put
$15.00 in an envelope and mail it to PO Box 131, Carle Place, NY 11514. Better
yet, attend our meeting on February 27th and have an informative evening to boot!
Now for that February meeting. A few years back, a few families from Bruce
Terrace came to a meeting and showed photos of the flooding on their block that
did yearly damage to their homes. Thanks to the efforts of Peter McDonnell,
Peggy and Jim Wilde, the CPCA set up meetings between the Bruce Terrace
families and the Village of Mineola, Town and County on the flooding concerns.
We have invited State Senator Jack Martins, Mineola Village Mayor Scott Strauss,
Town Councilwomen Viviana Russell and County Legislative Deputy Presiding
Officer Richard Nicholello to provide status on the various portions of the project
that are now underway.
It’s not over yet! We also have invited the present owners of the former Albraco
Metal who will be presenting a proposed development of the site. Gloria, please
attend!!!!
Lastly, enjoy a wonderful evening at the High School’s production of the King and
I with the Educational Foundations Premier performance on March 7th and
additional productions on Mach 8th and 9th. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera!

Correspondence to the CPCA
SENT IN VIA AN ANONOMOUS CP RESIDENT:
th
I recently attended and watched a 6 grade girls’ basketball game at a local school
gymnasium: It never ceases to amaze, disappoint, disturb, depress and sicken
when grown men-- and sometimes women, -- scream, criticize, berate, belittle and
scold players, coaches and referees during the course of a sporting event, in this
case Hoops. Though this behavior represents nothing novel or unusual, it
nonetheless, manifests a most unflattering and flawed part of our human selves.
There’s no denying the intrinsic, innate competitive nature of sports, participating
players and observing fans constitute a large part of our sports culture and human
nature. Intense competition and desire to win and be the best should be staples of
our collective sports psyche. Wanting one’s child to perform at their optimum
level, along with the coaches and referees, is perfectly understandable, desirable
and preferable. What’s not worthy of acceptance, praise or emulation: the constant
vociferous berating and critiquing of sons, daughters, coaches and referees.
Many of us have exhibited the kind of less-than-ideal behavior at a child’s
sporting event in our lives. Few of us are perfect. Sports get us involved and
excited and provide great pleasure, satisfaction and reward. There’s nothing more
uplifting! Cheering passionately and loudly for your team, a player, or your own
child should be encouraged and embraced. What needs to cease completely are the
angry, critical outbursts and directives shouted out during the game, most
especially, towards the children or teenagers playing the game. Grown men and
women become so agitated and involved I’m surprised we don’t witness heart
attacks on a frequent basis. I mean some become near apoplectic!
Henceforth, why don’t we all make an honest, concerted effort to stem the
negativity, cease and desist the anger-laden hollering, and focus on cheering
energetically and enthusiastically. Praise the effort and result but attempt in
earnest to shelve the negative shouting. Rest assured our sports-playing children-most importantly—and coaches and referees would respect and appreciate it and
maybe even derive more fun and fulfillment from their athletic endeavors. I don’t
pretend to say it’s easy but any improvement in our words and actions will advance
the cause. Baby steps are ok!
Sincerely, a parent striving to change for the best.

SENIOR CITIZENS
By John T. Heslin
The March 1993 edition of the Frog Horn printed the
following article as part of the President’s Message
by John Hogan:
“The past month has been eventful in Carle Place.
On February 25, 1993, a groundbreaking ceremony
for the Carle Place Senior Citizen/Community
Center was held at Charles Fuschillo Park. In
attendance were Supervisor Ben Zwirn; Councilman
Anthony D’Urso; Commissioner Jerry Olsen; Ray
Parish, the President of the Carle Place Senior
Citizens; Mrs. Charles Fuschillo; Chuck Fuschillo
and several other family members. There was an
excellent turnout of senior citizens and a number of
other community residents. Dave Mammina, Ray
Parish, Peter Meade and I were pleased to represent
the Carle Place Civic Association and participate in
the ceremony.
The senior/community center is the culmination of
several years of interaction between the senior
citizens, the Carle Place community and the town of
North Hempstead. We salute the Carle Place senior
citizens for their efforts.”
Upon its opening, the community center became
home to the Carle Place Senior Citizens. We thank
all those who had the foresight to build a facility that
is used daily in our community especially by the
seniors.
The Seniors are still going strong as we welcome
new members, John and Maryann Passarella, Maria
Mauro, and Arlene Morello.
Condolences are extended to the family of Ralph
Klepsch on his passing. Ralph will be missed by all
his friends in the Senior club, particularly the card
players.
Stay Well!
“The plans for the new community center are quite
attractive, and we told the Supervisor that we hoped
to be invited very shortly to the grand opening of this
facility.

FILLING YOU IN
By CATHERINE M. FASCILLA, DDS
Bridging the Gap
If you’ve ever lost a tooth and have been reluctant to undergo
further dental treatment to replace it, you may be interested in an
alternative to an implant, a removable partial denture or
extensive bridgework. A Maryland bridge or a hugger bridge
can be a simple, inexpensive way for you to replace a missing
tooth with less time spent in the dental chair and very little
drilling!
The Maryland Bridge is a single, replacement tooth constructed
from extra- strong chrome-cobalt metal and covered with natural
looking porcelain. Thin metal wings are bonded to the
tongue-side of the healthy teeth on either side of the space (see
the diagram). The hugger bridge is designed similarly to the
Maryland bridge but is made of acrylic. It has no metal
framework.
Attaching these types of bridges to your natural teeth in this
manner means there is little or no alteration to the teeth onto
which these bridges are bonded. The supporting teeth are not cut
or capped as with a conventional bridge. These bridges are
permanently bonded so there is no need for removal like a partial
denture.
Of course, a Maryland bridge or hugger bridge isn’t the answer
to every missing tooth. The surrounding teeth used for support
must be healthy and strong and the gap can not be too wide. If
you are a good candidate, these types of bridges are a
comfortable, economical alternative.

EYE OF THE HURRICANE
By Bob Greco
Congratulations to scuba-diving Carle Place author Paul
Mila on the publication of his 4th novel, "Near Miss." It
is the talk of the diving industry. One of the main
characters in the book is modeled after real-life diver
Layle Stanton. Paul also coaches our middle-schoolboys’
and girls’ tennis teams, along with instructing and
certifying scuba divers on Long Island. Paul spends his
time between Titus Ave. and Cozumel. No wonder he
always sports a tan. It is very sunny on Titus Ave.
While watching late-night cablevision I saw David
Mammina appearing before the Smithtown Board of
Zoning and he looked marvelous!
Wow, what a
good-looking architect! With a commanding voice and
diction and professionalism, he gave a presentation that
was very informative and fun to watch. David lives on
Titus as well. He does not maintain a year-long tan but he
does maintain the property we all enjoy on the corner of
Rushmore and Westbury Avenues as his professional
office. This former home of our American Legion is a
Carle Place landmark and is central to our history. David
and Trudy Mammina are true guardians of those
traditions.
Speaking of Westbury Ave., apparently the road sign
ROBERT S. GRECO, ESQ.

which states "No Through Trucking" means "No Through
Trucks Smaller Than The Size of a Building or The
Length of a Carle Place Block." I have never seen (since
1953) such gigantic vehicles. Tractor trailers, cement
trucks, whole pizza
factories on wheels, must, must, must use Westbury Ave.
in order to survive! Carle Place has become one square
mile of a parking lot for Jurassic Park trucking. Instead of
"Dominos" or "Cardinalis" or "Realto" our restaurants
should use neon signs that say "Truck Stop" or "Eats." At
6:00 P.M. on Westbury Ave., we become “the L.I.E. of the
Hurricane!" Hope they don't turn down Titus Ave.
I met Eddie Miller in the deli recently and we reminisced
about the early days of Carle Place H.S. I have vivid
memories of noticing the trophy cases during our first days
in the new high school, while it was still being built. The
school had just opened and we didn't even have a senior
class. The trophy cases were all empty except for a
picture of Coach Coady's 9th grade basketball team on the
steps of Rushmore since Rushmore gym was the only gym
we had. There was Tommy Seeger with a basketball in
the center of the team and Eddie was the star athlete of
that grade. They must have won some 9th grade event and
that trophy was the sole shining metal located within those
cavernous cases.
Now they send me back my
championship trophies because they were only County
Championships and there's no room in our cases except for
State titles.
"Carle Place?!” our opponents used to
say.“Where's that?" "Frogs? Your mascot is a Frog?"
Then Eddie would stuff the ball down their throats!
We mourn the passing of Ralph Klepsch who passed away
on January 11, 2013. He was the beloved husband of the
late Joan. His children, Ellen Christel and Nancy Klepsch,
as well as his cherished grandchildren, Joshua, Thomas,
Adam and Joni, have contributed to our schools and
community in every positive way . Ralph and Joan were
community leaders and they
supported their
community, their schools, and their church with the love
and example that touched our lives and our hearts. Ralph
and Joan will be sorely missed but their legacy will live
forever, in the eye of the hurricane.

Meeting Minutes from the CPCA January General Meeting
Membership for the new year so far totals 52. Guest speakers were Mr. Tim Stellato from the Carle Place Water Company and Mr.
Bruce Chester from Chester Insurance at 154 Westbury Ave. He recommends a minimum of $500K – $1,000,000 coverage for all
house contents and the kind that does not depreciate item’s values. It’s true, that flooding from rain is never covered. Many claims
for trees falling on neighbors properties were put in. If you legally, in writing, notify a neighbor about their tree being a problem, it
will be covered by the insurance companies. Regarding deductibles percentages – there is no regulation on the amount. The
company can determine any percentage they choose. The maximum any flood insurance will ever pay is $250,000. An unknown
fact is that insurance for basement flooding only covers walls, washing machines, and not much else.
There are 31 people in attendance. The Treasurer explained that the Christmas Tree Lighting event, with all expenses, costs
$1500.00.
The Water District has a bond out for $14.8 million dollars, to upgrade over the coming years. Present were Board Members Larry
Zaino and Peter Meade. They planted new trees on the property by Clearland Ave., to replace some destroyed by the hurricane. To
paint the water tower inside and out costs millions. They will be drilling a new well behind Red Lobster restaurant, which was shut
down in 1968 due to high nitrate levels. They have to go deeper, and we will need an ever increasing amount due to new homes,
hotels, new irrigation systems, and more people tending to live in one house these days. A new treatment facility will be needed and
also an updating of the system that monitors chlorine addition to our water. Well #5 (at Fushillo Park) has high volatile compounds.
The money spent on purchasing the eight parking spaces at the park, was spent back into fixing the park. Nitrates and VOCs
(volatile organic compounds) are constantly monitored. Levels, however, are trending up but are still in the lowest rates in Nassau
County. The gradual increase in taxes over the years is projected at $12 a month per household. Effort for the bond will be made on
January 29th, 2013 at the Town of North Hempstead meeting.
Plans for the Nassau Hub are still up in the air, around the old Coliseum. One developer plans a $2 billion biotech park with mixed
use development. If financing and permits go thru, the property could be ready for construction by the fall. The Town or Village of
Hempstead may require some type of housing to be included. The Coliseum may be scaled down in size, or a smaller new arena be
added with it.
CPCA Board members are meeting with the County Traffic Department on the new shopping mall traffic problems.
The February 27th Meeting will have Councilwoman Viviana Russell talking about repairs from hurricane Sandy. Also will be officers from the Town, Village of Mineola and the County to outline the work and schedule for the water remediation project on the
Mineola/Carle Place border.

Better schools and better communities see their
children beyond the awards assembly and recognize
those hidden points of light that each child shares with
their community without the glory of the gold medal
In an article in College Parent News and Views by on their chest but with the brilliance of their character
Vicki, she writes that as parents, most of us love in their heart to persevere in the face of
nothing better than to see our children succeed at disappointments and to thrive beyond them.
whatever they attempt. Sometimes, however, they
will not. It is easy to celebrate with your child when
he is successful. It is heart wrenching to support
your child through disappointment. We can give
some thought to our responses to our child's
disappointments – and to our own disappointments
for them. Nichelle Strzepek has written a wonderful
commentary about this that should give us all food
for thought. Although her article is titled Helping Dancers Deal With Disappointment, the principles
she talks about go well beyond dancers and apply to
all of us. Nichelle encourages us all to ask “Who is
this person becoming?” Disappointments are part of
the growing and learning process. In children
especially, where one is going should matter a whole
lot more than where one has been. Missions
accomplished and tasks/goals completed are how we
develop self-confidence in our abilities. We are not
defined by our achievements. In fact, often we are

It is sometimes easy to confuse our accomplishments
and awards with who we are. In our culture we place
a lot of emphasis on the achievements for which a
person has been recognized – she is a two-time
Olympic medalist; he is a famous actor who has won
numerous stage and screen awards. These things say
little of who a person really is. In addition, these
recognitions only look back, never forward.
During this time of year for our high school seniors,
with the arrival of the acceptance – and rejection –
letters, we may be acutely aware of the public nature
of our student’s victories and defeats. Our responses
will be an important key in helping them to keep
these life experiences in perspective.

St. Mary's Episcopal Church
CP honors parishioners Mineola's Raymond
and Virginia Leonhard
January 27, 2013 ,Carle Pl. The Rev. Gerardo Ramirez, priest in
charge at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Carle Place, presented
Raymond and Virginia Leonhard Bishop's Medals, the highest
recognition that can be given to any member of the diocese of
Long Island. Bishop Lawrence Provenzano gives the award to an
individual who has contributed immeasurably to the life,
fellowship and service of the parish.
The Leonhards are long-time members of St. Mary's. Raymond
Leonard has held numerous offices within the church including
senior warden, building and grounds chairman, Vestryman and is
in charge of producing the churches weekly bulletin. Virginia
Leonard has handled the churches Memorial funds for many years,
has served on the Vestry and has just been elected to the position
of Junior Warden.
At a brief ceremony during the church's regular, 10 o'clock
service, attended by parishioners including former Bishop's Cross
recipients, priest in charge Ramirez placed the medals over the
heads of Mr. and Mrs. Leonhard after reading from one of the
certificates sent by Bishop Lawrence C Provenzano, "you have
contributed immeasurably to the life, fellowship and service of this
community. You have been regular in attendance and faithful in
support, and are an example of someone who serves without
thought of personal recognition. In gratitude for these years of
service it is my pleasure to bestow upon you the bishops medal for
distinguished service in the diocese of Long Island."
A reception in the parish hall followed the presentation.
