President's Message
Bill Walters
My first venue as President is now in the books. Our Breakfast Run to Two Bird Cafe
was a success. Despite a smattering of rain, it turned out to be a fine Saturday. In the
words of John Jackson, "It was all worth getting wet." We had around a half dozen first
timers join us and they admitted having a great time! We also had may of you taking
pictures as well; John and Kaye Jackson, Lynn Walters, Simone and Thorsten
Kopitzki, Tim Shore, Ronald Breeze, Vern Rogers and Cris Fischer; the ones I saw. I
chose the best of the best and included them in my article herein.
We are getting off to an easy start to 2010 with events really starting to pick up come
March with our first autocross, 24 Hours of LeMons and the Hoppy Beer Tour. Rob and
Mary Neidel hosted the first beer tour last year at Moylan's Brewery in Novato and it was
popular enough to bring back for another go. Mary is currently working on a couple of new
venues for us, but definitely put it on your calendars to attend. Lemons is a quirky "mimic"
of the classic road race with driver/teams entering race cars costing $500 or less. Kind of
like the Burning Man version of racing. As one entrant stated, "...it's a loud, hot, noisy
version of driving to work...but more dangerous." This will take place at Infineon raceway
March 6-7th. I believe we will not have to worry about rains by then. I really hope you can
make it out to some of these events. They can be quite exhilarating.
Our new Vice President Greg Maissen and I will be joining or Zone Rep. Sharon
Neidel down in San Jose at the Marriott, for the semi-annual National PCA Board of
Director's meeting February 20th & 21st. All of the Zone Reps., National Committee
Members & Region Presidents will be attending and discussing policy. This is a closed
meeting, however, our host, Loma Prieta Region, will be providing a no host dinner for us
which you may attend and rub shoulders with the National folks! I guess I'll have to dress
up...
That's it for me, check out Kurt's Korner next. I'll see you out there!

Update on the Marin-Sonoma Concours d' Elegance!
On Saturday, May 15, 2010, "The Drive" part of the Marin-Sonoma Concours will begin in
downtown Mill Valley at 8:00AM with a 2+ hour back roads drive ending up at a private
ranch on the Petaluma River for a superb lunch for 300 people. Porsche people will have
our own tour where the emphasis will be fun on the back roads!
We have been allotted 75 spaces for Porsches or 150 people and because Porsche is the
featured marque, we want to fill up these spots ASAP.
The cost is $40.00 per person and includes a continental breakfast at D'Angelo's in Mill
Valley and lunch at the Rockin H Ranch in Petaluma. Remember this event benefits
Hospice by the Bay and is tax deductible!
Here is the link to the Marin-Sonoma Concours website with all the details on "The Drive".
http://www.marinsonomaconcours.org/thedrive.htm
Print the application form, fill it out, and send with your check!
Since this will be the premier Porsche event in the Bay Area for 2010, I sure want to
make the Redwood Region look good and show our support! As you may know... I am on
the Board of Directors of the Marin-Sonoma Concours as the resident Porsche guy.
We still need more Porsches on the Concours field and if you have a stunning example of a
356, early 911 or Porsche racecar...we want you there! See here for details!
http://www.marinsonomaconcours.org/entrants.htm
Janis Joplin's 356 painted in the wild color of the 60's will be there on display. Since Janis
spent a lot of time in Marin County and her love of this car was well known...this is a real
coup for the Concours to get this car!
I still need a few more tour leaders for our part of "The Drive" so contact me and
volunteer!
Now on other fronts...our Facebook page has 91 fans and continues to grow daily! If you
have a Facebook account, do a search for the Redwood Region and sign up as a fan. I
post lots of good Porsche stuff there!

February Calendar Pic.
Bill Walters
Each month will bring a new pic. relating to major accomplishments or milestones
for Porsche. February celebrates the 911's 45th year in America.
The Porsche 911 can trace it's roots back to sketches drawn by Ferdinand
"Butzi" Porsche in 1959. The 911 coupe was developed as a more powerful,
larger, more comfortable replacement for the Porsche 356. The new car
made it's debut at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show in a shade of yellow.
The car as presented, had a non-operational mockup of the 901 engine,
receiving an operational engine in February 1964.
The car was originally designated as the Porsche 901, it's project number.
82 cars were built as 901s, however, Peugeot protested on the grounds that
in France it had exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers
with a zero in the middle. So, instead of selling the new model with
another name in France, Porsche changed the name to 911. Internally, the
car's part numbers carried on the prefix 901 for years. Production began
in September 1964 and the first 911s reached America in February 1965 with
a price listed at $6,500.
The car pictured was built in July 1965 with chassis serial number 303167.
der Riesenbaum Archives
Bill Walters
Kurt Fischer brought over boxes of historical Porsche related items the other day. Seems part the new
Presidential
duties include overseeing piles of long outdated items in U-Haul boxes. One of the boxes was full of der
Riesenbaum's
from the 70's and '80's. I managed to sort them and have been reading through them since. The
December
1971 issue contained this choice ad.
Stay tuned each month for other goodies in this same spot.

My six-year streak of rain free Porsche Runs came to an end on my first event as your
President. I took it as a baptism if you will.
Rain was predicted all week long and we received a bit Saturday morning. It didn't deter
37 of you from coming out, including a dozen or so first timers, to enjoy or first Breakfast
Run of 2010. Bob Hall once again prepared and organized our tour to the Two Bird Cafe in
Geronimo, and had us gather in the Vintage Oaks Mall parking lot to very light drizzle in
about 50 degree weather. It wasn't too bad as spirits were high, probably from mild cases
of cabin fever.
Following or drivers meeting, 25 Porsches followed Bob out to North 101 up to Petaluma,
looping back just before the city limits and then out west on San Antonio Road. Here was
our first contact with the blessed countryside that had been cleansed by the winter
showers. The hills were dark with soaked soil, cows looked cleaner, and perched turkey
vultures looked menacing with wings spread to dry in the sun's rays. Everything appeared
richer in color and the light colors made sharp contrast with the violet skies. It was going
to be a good Run after all.

This is what is was like...
Kaye Jackson pic.
San Antonio turns onto Point Reyes-Petaluma Road which we followed west to the
Cheese Factory for a photo-op and regrouping. After a brief rest, we continued into sleepy
Nicasio and then on back east on Lucas Valley Road for a ways, made a U-turn and headed
back to Geronimo and the Two Bird.
Our size required us to convene in two rooms sitting amongst tables with vased Peruvian
lilies. The restaurant provided a select menu for us consisting of choices of omelets, eggs
Benedict and Florentine, huevos rancheros, and fresh trout. The fish was the popular item.
It actually turned out to be a pretty day; not all that wet. The newbies said they enjoyed
the drive and the new company and said they will be back again. That's what we want to
hear!
Thanks to Bob Hall, Greg Maissen for signing all of you on and the staff of the Two Bird for
a fine job all around. See you at Nicasio!
