Readers keep informed about the electric
industry, life and rural living with Chris
Meyers, general manager of the Oklahoma
Association of Electric Cooperatives, in his
monthly column.
Through our collaboration with the Oklahoma Travel Department, we are able to
provide readers with a detailed calendar
of events every month. Oklahoma Events
features every event from live theatre to
festivals and craft shows.

trends, and information on how your
electric cooperative is looking out for you
and your community in Oklahoma Living’s
Powerful Living pages.
Oklahoma
Outside
Providing tips on landscaping, gardening, irrigation and much more, Allan Storjohann,
host of the weekly KRMG gardening show,
helps Oklahomans summon their innergardeners.
This ‘n’ That
Find a lost uncle, words to your favorite
song, heirlooms or even announce your
family reunion in this column. Readers
turn to other readers each month for help
in finding almost everything.
Prizes abound! With the launch of our
new digital edition and Facebook page,
readers are given opportunities each month
to throw their names in the hat to win gift
certificates, travel mugs and other neat
prizes. We feature drawing contests, recipe
contests, Guess Where, and our monthly
photo contest, Okie Snaps.
Lifestyle Segments
Retired Country
Dwellers
This market segment includes well-to-do
early retirees who move away from urban
areas in their 50s, seasonal migrators and the
independent elderly who have lived their
lives in one place.
Typically, these people are empty-nesters
who have regular contact with children and
grandchildren who may live in nearby cities.
Oklahoma Living readers in this category are
very active in their golden years, as they
enjoy the serenity, safety, and clean air in
the country. Many reside around lakes, golf
courses, or other resort communities. These
folks are active gardeners, readers, travelers,
mail order shoppers, Internet surfers and
health and fitness devotees.
Suburbanites
Weekenders
Surburbanites are moving in droves into
electric co-op areas on the outskirts of large
metro areas.
Weekenders are working upper-income
families whose primary residences are in big
cities, but who spend much of their leisure
time at their country hideaways. Weekenders
are upscale consumers of goods and services
for two households.
In each of Oklahoma’s top metro markets,
as many as 25 percent of upper-scale professionals and wage earners are now on co-op
lines. And the number is growing. Major cities surrounded by co-op territories include
Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Lawton and Enid.
Suburbanites and other Oklahoma Living
readers share similar interests relating to
travel, trucks, lawn and garden products,
satellite television, computers and software,
health and fitness equipment and home
improvement items.
Weekenders typically own property within
100 miles of metro areas. Their interests
include travel, trucks, boating, hunting,
fishing, water sports and computers.
Large Land
Owners
Stable Country
Families
LLs own 50 acres of land or more. They
are the survivors and beneficiaries of
decades of consolidation in American
agriculture. Though a small percentage
of the total audience, these landowners are large consumers of goods and
services.
SCFs are by far the largest audience
segment, representing about half of the
total circulation. These households usually consist of two adults age 25-54 and
one or two children who live at home or
on adjacent properties. On average, the
group owns about 20 acres of land.
They manage large, profitable, sophisticated farming and ranching enterprises,
sometimes combined with retail or
manufacturing businesses and some
lucrative mineral operations.
In many cases the estates they now own
have been passed down, so they have
relatively little debt. One or both of the
parents work in a small town or commute to nearby cities. They also receive
income from other sources such as conventional ranching and farming, dairies
and home-based businesses; some receive
extra income from oil and gas or mineral
properties.
Products and services desired by LLs
are similar to those for Stable Country Families. LLs also need large farm
machinery, herbicides, insecticides,
windbreaks, computers and lots of barn
and fencing materials.
Products attractive to this market segment
include travel, trucks, home furnishings,
remodeling materials, garden and seed
items, lawn maintenance devices and tractors, fencing, books, satellite dishes and
programming, electronic gate openers, specialty cooking items, pet supplies, clothing,
home appliances, computers and software.
