DKIT Launches Online Counselling Service
Tuesday 15th February 2011
Yesterday saw the successful launch of the ‘My Mind Matters’ website at the
Dundalk Institute of Technology.
‘My Mind Matters’ (MMM) www.mymindmatters.ie is a website dedicated to
the provision of information, help, support and advice to college students
around a range of topics that can affect mental health and well-being, such as
anxiety, depression, exam stress and coping with the transition to college life.
Students are also now able to engage in online counselling with Dkit student
counsellors.
For some people seeing a counsellor face to face is just too difficult or
daunting. They may be too shy, embarrassed by their difficulties, or the
demands on their time mean they are not able to access the services directly.
Now counselling is available for students while they are on placement either
here or abroad, and it is also hoped that it will make it easier for young men to
reach out in times of distress as research shows that over 70% of young men
access help online.
This is a collaborative project between DKIT and three other colleges NUI
Galway, Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork. It has attracted
significant investment from government and college funds and will provide
interactive and confidential help and support for students. Reachout.com, a
web-based service that inspires young people to help themselves through
tough times, and find ways to improve their own mental health and well-being,
is a collaborator on the My Mind Matter website.
The My Mind Matters website was formally launched in NUIG on Monday
February 7th by Ryan Tubridy and yesterday saw the launch to DKIT students
The launch marks a significant watershed in how support is provided to
students in the academic environment in Ireland. DKIT is not only the only
Institute of Technology in Ireland currently participating in the project but also
attracted considerable funding for the development of this ground breaking
initiative . It is hoped that this innovative use of technology will add to the suite
of student support services already provided to students in DkIT. And that in
future the web portal will become a national widely availed of service.

Sinéad Pentony Head of Policy at TASC talks to DkIT
“The Role of the Economy in a Flourishing Society”
Dundalk Institute of Technology are holding it’s first Green Week on Campus
from 21st February to 25th February 2011 and we are delighted to welcome
Sinéad Pentony, BSc; MAgSc; MSc., Head of Policy in TASC to give a talk
titled “The Role of the Economy in a Flourishing Society”. Ms. Pentony
joined TASC from Pobal, where she headed up Pobal’s research programme,
where she designed and managed a range of socio-economic research
projects, including a national research study on the development of an Index
of Affluence and Deprivation. During her time at Pobal, Ms. Pentony
contributed to OECD publications on the evaluation of social inclusion
projects. Prior to joining Pobal, Ms. Pentony held a research position in
UCD’s Rural Development Unit, where she led the formulation of an
integrated community development plan for Co. Wexford.
TASC is an independent think-tank dedicated to combating Ireland’s high
level of economic inequality and ensuring that public policy has equality at its
core. Economic inequality is not confined to income inequality, but exists
across many areas of the economy - for example, asset ownership, wealth,
taxation, health, housing and education. Thus, fighting economic inequality is
about ensuring that economic interests are rendered subordinate to the
common good in areas such as education, health and welfare. It is also about
redistributing risk, wealth and power, which requires increased accountability
and transparency at all levels.
TASC's policy development work and research data come from a number of
sources, in-house research and analysis with a broad-based advisory council
who assist in determining work programmes, a network of economists and
social scientists in Ireland who retain their academic base and internationally,
a network of progressive think tanks who share policy insights and research
data. TASC also work in partnership with other organisations - national and
international - which share TASC’s aim of creating a more equal society.
The talk takes place in the Syndicate Room, T K Whittaker Building on Friday
25th February, 2011 from 1pm to 2pm. This is free and open to the public.

DkIT Students at Newstalk Student Enterprise
Competition Final 2011
Designed to generate a spirit of enterprise in students attending Institutes of
Technologies throughout Ireland, the Newstalk 106-108 FM Student
Enterprise Competition allows students to interact with authentic companies
which promotes innovation and creativity among students and provides those
involved with the opportunity to learn about real-life business challenges and
also to establish creative solutions.
With 330 teams involving around 1300 students and lecturers from 16
colleges participating last year, the Newstalk competition has created
unrivaled interest and success nationwide. The current holders of the
competition are from Tipperary Institute and as a result the semi-finals and
finals of the competition were held on their campus last weekend.
This year’s team members were Niall McCabe, Desmond Eiffe, Timothy
Flemming and Hassan Raji from the school of Business Studies and their
mentor was John Sisk. In a heated semi final DkIT was announced as winner
of their semi-final group beating NCI, IT Blanchardstown and IT Tallaght.
The winner from each semi-final group went forward to represent their own
Institute in the National final of the competition. DkIT at this stage came up
against DIT, IT Tipperary and IT Tralee. At this stage each team then had 30
minutes to present to a panel of judges consisting of Frank Cronin, CEO of
Newstalk 106-108 fm, Bobby Kerr, CEO of Insomnia, David Bunworth, owner
of David Bunworth & Associates and Niall Mellon, founder of Niall Mellon
Township Trust. For the second time in three years DkIT at this stage of the
competition fell just short of the post and came a very close second being
beaten by DIT who were announced as the eventual winners.
As well as putting forward a very strong team into the competition, DkIT were
also heavily involved in the case study material used through the ACE project
for which DkIT is the lead institute. A number of entrepreneurship case studies
used during the competition came from the soon to be launched ACE book of
Irish case studies in entrepreneurship. The case chosen for the final featured
MCOR Technologies who were participants on the DkIT Novation EPP in
2007. MCOR Technologies and design manufacture and design a unique 3D
printer are headquartered in Ardee Co. Louth. The case was penned by
Garrett Duffy, Enterprise Development Manager in DkIT who manages the
Novation EPP programme and worked with the company on their early stage
development and the issues they faced in funding the development of their
product and growth of the business.
Student Enterprise @ DkIT would like to congratulate and thank this year’s
team for such a strong representation of the institute.

DkIT Students Demonstrate at Taoiseach’s Visit to College
Members of student unions at Dundalk Institute of Technology will demonstrate
at the opening of a new building in the college by Taoiseach Brian Cowen at
11.30am tomorrow (February 11th).
The former Fianna Fail leader will visit the Dundalk Institute to officially open the
new PJ Carroll Building, which houses the School of Creative Multimedia, and
the Computing and Music Departments of the college.
Members of the local student union will set up a mock classroom outside the
building in time for the event. The classroom will include empty chairs to
represent the many students, who will be forced to abandon their studies next
year due to lack of finances.
The Higher Education of thousands of current and potential students in DkIT and
across Ireland has been deeply wounded by Budget 2011.
The Government’s decision to increase college fees to €2000 as part of the
Budget is a step backwards for Ireland’s third level education. These increased
fees will deny thousands of students access to a third level education.
DkIT Student Union President, James Clarke, said:
“At a time when employment prospects are bleak, the Government should be
increasing access to education to enable young people to gain the skills
necessary to build a better life for themselves. Instead, this Government has
once again erected more barriers to education by increasing fees to €2000 per
year.
The 5% cut in student maintenance grants, on top of a 5% cut in last year’s
Budget, will be particularly difficult for the most vulnerable students to deal with.
These cuts will simply mean that some students will be forced to drop out of
college for financial reasons.
The empty chairs in our mock classroom at the demonstration will act as symbol
of those students, who have been forced out of third level education because of
the Government’s cutbacks.
Also, as part of our student demonstration, the Vice President of the student
union, David Branagan, and I will invite Brian Cowen to a round of golf, during
which we can discuss the bailout of Irish Education”
Ends.

DkIT Senior Footballers suffer extra-time heartbreak to Tralee IT in
Trench Cup
So near, but yet so far. That rotten old adage could have been coined for this
game alone. Deep into (normal time) injury time, DkIT, held the slenderest of
leads, and had a free kick in Tralee territory. Fast forward ten seconds and the
Kerry men snatched a draw with the final kick of the contest and send the
enthralling encounter into extra-time, thanks to county star Barry John Keane.
Just seconds from a memorable victory, DkIT now faced the unenviable task
of extra-time, against an invigorated Tralee outfit. A bridge too far? Enough of
the rotten adages.
Played on Wednesday last in Portarlington, Co. Laois, the Dundalk side really
tested the tournament favourites, before the Tralee outfit finally took a grip on
the contest. It was the men from the Kingdom who settled best, claiming the
games opening two scores with the diminutive corner forward Alan
O’Donoghue and Keane opening their accounts. However, DkIT responded
and Meath man Paddy O'Rourke (Skryne, Meath) grabbed his first point of the
contest, sandwiched between two scores from Louth's Derek Maguire
(Dundalk Young Irelands, Louth), to put the Dundalk men in front. Startled by
the DkIT scores, Tralee sprung into action. A run from the impressive
midfielder Paul O’Donoghue led to a penalty for the Tralee outfit. But
goalkeeper Rory Beggan (Scotstown, Monaghan) got down low to his right to
push the effort onto his right hand post, though Mickey Brennan was quickest
to react, and his point put the sides back level. The penalty miss spurred
Tralee onto greater things and a run of scores from Alan Kavanagh, corner
man O’Donoghue and Keane pushed them back out in front. DkIT needed a
response and up stepped Maguire, replicating his magnificent goal against
Kildare for his county side two weeks ago in the O'Byrne Cup final. Receiving
the ball out on the sideline, Maguire skipped round three men before coolly
slotting the ball past the onrushing Paul O'Sullivan to draw the sides level
once again. Moments later, Kilkerley Emmets (Louth) wing back Cathal Bellew
put DkIT back in front, drilling the ball straight between the posts after good
work from Rodney Gorman (Clontibret, Monaghan). With half time
approaching Tralee’s John Kelly had the last say, as his long-range effort
meant the sides went into the interval level pegging.
Half time: DkIT 1-04 Tralee IT 0-07
A half-time pep talk from the DkIT management team of Paul McShane and
Cathal Kearney seemed to have done the trick as their side came flying out of
the blocks in the second period. Almost immediately Kevin Rogers (Naomh
Malachi, Louth) swung over his first scores of the contest, thanks to his trusty
left boot. Tralee responded though, and soon went ahead, with Brendan Poff
scoring from play, while Keane and O’Donoghue grabbed further scores from
placed balls. However, DkIT remained resolute and inspired by the defending
of Fionn Carney (St Sylvesters, Dublin), Damian Whelan (Kilanerin, Wexford)
and Brian Fitzpatrick (Oliver Plunketts, Louth), DkIT regained the lead in the
closing stages, thanks to a booming free kick from O'Rourke and another
pointed effort from Rogers. The fat lady never sung though, and deep into
injury time, the Kerrymen managed to salvage a draw thanks mainly to
tormentor-in-chief, Keane.
Full-time: DkIT 1-08 Tralee IT 0-11
It looked like extra-time would follow the same pattern as what had happened
previous, as both sides exchanged scores and could not be separated.
Rogers and O'Rourke again were to the fore for DkIT, with Keane and Gerard
O'Driscoll responding for Tralee. The first period of extra-time was reaching a
conclusion, but not before the decisive moment of the game. Corner forward
O’Donoghue, for once, escaped the shackles of the DkIT defence and drove
the ball past the despairing dive of Beggan. The goal was a crushing blow to
the hopes of DkIT and inspired the Tralee men to greater things as they
capitalised on a tiring DkIT defence to tag on five scores without reply. A free
kick from Maguire was to be DkIT's solitary reply; alas it was to be too little,
too late.
Extra-time (full-time): DkIT 1-11 Tralee IT 1-18
DkIT: Rory Beggan (Scotstown, Monaghan), Fionn Carney (St Sylvesters,
Dublin), Damian Whelan (Kilanerin, Wexford), Paddy McCabe (Rockcorry,
Monaghan), Brian Fitzpatrick (Oliver Plunketts, Louth), Brian Duffy (Glyde
Rangers, Louth), Cathal Bellew (Kilkerley Emmets, Louth), Paddy O’Rourke
(Skryne, Meath), Andrew Nixon (Dundalk Young Irelands, Louth), Mark
Treanor (Scotstown, Monaghan), Andy McDonnell (Newtown Blues, Louth),
Rodney Gorman (Clontibret, Monaghan), Kevin Rogers (Naomh Malachi,
Louth), Barry Flanagan (O’Raghallaighs, Louth), Derek Maguire (Dundalk
Young Irelands, Louth)
Subs: Sean Hand (Kilkerley Emmets, Louth), David Caulfield (Scotstown,
Monaghan), Paul Crewe (Clan na Gael, Louth), Gearóid Rennicks (St Ultans,
Meath), Pat Rafferty (Syddan, Meath), Shane Reilly (Gael Colmcille, Meath),
Marc McBride (Eire Og, Monaghan), Christopher McGorman (Eire Og,
Monaghan), Daniel Luby (Killeshandra, Cavan), John Marren (Charlestown,
Mayo), Stephen Finnegan (Syddan, Meath), Richie Lynagh (St Ultans, Meath),
Niall Farrell (Nobber, Meath).
Scorers: Derek Maguire (1-03), Kevin Rogers (0-04), Paddy O’Rourke (0-03),
Cathal Bellew (0-01)
Extra-time proved a step too far for the Dundalk men as the Kerrymen's
superior fitness told in the end. Credit though to DkIT for battling right to the
end. Best for DkIT were Fionn Carney, who was outstanding in his manmarking role on Tralee dangerman Alan O’Donoghue, Brian Fitzpatrick who
led his men by example, Damian Whelan who inspired all around him, Cathal
Bellew who ran himself into the ground, Paddy O’Rourke who got through a
mountain of work, and Derek Maguire who replicated his early season county
form. Indeed, the entire DkIT panel, from 1-28 can be proud of their valiant
efforts. So near…but yet, so far.

DUNDALK IT 2 BLANCHARDSTOWN IT 0
Wednesday Feb 2
DkIT Goals: John Bingham, Eoin Murphy.
Dundalk IT have qualified for the final of the national league competition after
beating Blanchardstown IT in today’s semi-final. Unbeaten all season
Dundalk IT started the game slight favourites and in the early exchanges it
was clear they could live with the favourites’ tag.
In those early exchanges Dundalk IT dominated the play and they should have
scored at least one from the number of chances created. Blanchardstown to
their credit dug in and put more pressure on Dundalk denying them the space
they thrive on and as a result the half ended 0-0.
Dundalk IT began the second half much more focused and almost scored
when John Bingham had a well struck shot saved. The quick accurate passing
style from Dundalk made it very difficult for Blanchardstown to cope with and
it wasn’t long before Dundalk got their reward. Sean Hand beat 2 defenders on
the left to set up Eoin Murphy to tap in, 1-0.
Blanchardstown restarted the game only to lose possession to a crunching Paul
Martin tackle; he played a pass to Shane Dowling who crossed to the back
post for John Bingham to head home, 2-0. That quick fire double from
Dundalk killed the game as a contest and that is how it finished.
It was a masterful display by Dundalk and they fully deserve a place in the
final which takes place in Leixlip on February 16 with a 2:00pm kick-off.

CFAI UMBRO CUP 2ND MATCH REPORT
DUNDALK IT 6 SOUTHWEST COLLEGE 3 Tues Feb 8
DkIT Goals: Sean Hand (2), Gary McGrane (2), John Bingham, Shane Dowling.
Dundalk IT move into the quarter-finals of the national cup today when they
beat South-West College in a game that was a real test of character. Dundalk
IT are used to dominating games so it was a shock to the system when after
30min they were 3-0 down. South-West College had 3 chances sandwiched
between at least 6 for Dundalk, but the difference was South-West scored each
of their chances.
This Dundalk IT team have many qualities and one of them most definitely
would determination. Having just conceded a third they absolutely hammered
South-West for the remainder of the first half and were rewarded a penalty
which was scored right on half time by Gary McGrane.
In the second half Dundalk IT continued were they left of and after just a
minute they scored a second through Gary McGrane. South-West were at this
point in disarray and Sean Hand made them pay and how. He received a pass
from the impressive Joe Flynn and from 30yrds struck an unstoppable shot
that flew into the top corner.
With the game now level Dundalk IT went all-out for the win and they didn’t
have to wait long: after just scoring an incredible goal Sean Hand did it again.
From the edge of the penalty area he hit an equally impressive shot that gave
the goalkeeper no chance, 4-3.
South-West had no response to what was happening to them and further goals
from Shane Dowling and Mr Goals himself, John Bingham, made it 6-3 to
Dundalk IT. The next game for the lads is the National League Final in Leixlip
on February 16. Dundalk IT ‘B’ team have a National Cup Quarter –Final vs

CFAI UMBRO ‘B’ CUP MATCH REPORT
Dundalk IT ‘B’ 2 Letterkenny IT ‘B’ 1, Feb 3
Dundalk IT goals: Aaron Mulligan, Colm Durham.
Dundalk IT ‘B’ team progressed to the quarter final stages of the
National Cup after beating a very strong Letterkenny team today in
DkIT. The game was played in awful conditions and with the wind
behind them it was Letterkenny who settled quickest. They created a
couple of early chances, one of which brought a great save from Richie
Creghan the home keeper.
Midway through the half Letterkenny got the break they deserved; a
mix up in the home defence allowed the ball to land at the feet of the
Letterkenny forward who coolly put the ball in the net. There were no
real chances for either team for the remainder of the half although Paul
Johnson of Dundalk IT was unlucky to be called off-side when clear.
With conditions favouring Dundalk IT, Letterkenny had to defend right
from the start as the home team pressed for an equaliser. The pressure
paid off in the 53min when a magnificent cross from Richie Baker
found Aaron Mulligan in the penalty area, Mulligan hardly had to move
as he hit a wonderful volley, 1-1.
The pressure on the Letterkenny defence was relentless and it was only
a matter of time before Dundalk IT scored again. Centre back John
Scott placed a pass through the heart of the Letterkenny defence for
Colm Durham to run onto, with only the goalkeeper to beat Durham
calmly placed the ball into the corner of the net, 2-1 and that’s how it
stayed.
Dundalk IT ‘B’ will now travel to play Athlone IT ‘B’ in the quarter
final on Thursday February 10, kick-off @ 2:00pm. Dundalk IT ‘A’ will
play Galway IT in the National League Final in Leixlip on February 16,
kick-off @ 2:00pm
