Spirit Stones
The Ancient Art of the Scholar’s Rock
Photographs by Jonathan M. Singer
Text by Kemin Hu and Thomas S. Elias
Renowned photographer Jonathan M. Singer presents striking
black-and-white images of Chinese ornamental rocks from one
of the world’s foremost collections.
Shaped by nature and selected by man, scholars’ rocks, or gongshi, have been
prized by Chinese intellectuals since the Tang dynasty, and are now sought
after by Western collectors as well. They are a natural subject for the photographer Jonathan M. Singer, most recently acclaimed for his images of those
other remarkable hybrids of art and nature, Japanese bonsai.
Here Singer turns his lens on some 150 fine stones, ancient and modern,
from the world-class collection of Kemin Hu, a recognized authority on this
art form.
Hu and Thomas S. Elias contribute essays on the history and aesthetics of
scholars’ rocks, explaining the traditional terms of stone appreciation, such as
shou (thinness), zhou (wrinkles), lou (channels), and tou (openness). These
essays highlight the philosophical differences in stone appreciation between
the West and the East. Elias’ essay, like the Western approach to stone appreciation, highlights the scientific aspect of the stones, such as their geological
structure and formation. Hu’s essay emphasizes the spiritual aspects of the
stones in keeping with the Eastern approach.
Hu provides a narrative caption for each stone, describing its history and
characteristics with a lyrical quality that represents the stones as “the vital
essence and energy of the heavens and the earth—representing a world in
miniature.”

This is a naturally formed Ying stone. Richly wrinkled, it looks like a dongtian,
one of the cave heavens (often called grotto heavens) held sacred by Taoists
in China. A dongtian is a cave or hollow considered to be the heavenly abode
of immortals; this stone’s name, “Beyond the Cave Heaven” (bieyou dongtian),
is a Chinese idiom meaning that behind this abode is another world of great
natural beauty.

Caitao stone is one of two kinds of stone produced in the Hongshui River
(or Red River) in the Guangxi region. The long-term association with flowing
water has given the Red River stones from the area of Heshan a very soft layer
of color on the surface, as if they have been enameled, hence the name Caitao
shi, which can be translated as “colored pottery stone.” The green coloring on
this stone is darker toward the top and lighter at the bottom. The bulge on the
top of the stone is particularly noteworthy: It is in the shape of an eye, which
one can imagine as the “eye of heaven.”

Six Spices
A Simple Concept of Indian Cooking
By Neeta Saluja
The art of Indian cuisine at your fingertips.
• Neeta Saluja book tour
Neeta Saluja simplifies Indian cooking with a unique approach to its
preparation. She focuses on the fundamentals—the special ingredients
and techniques every cook can use to create fragrant, delicious, and wellbalanced dishes.
Six Spices demystifies the exotic and complex flavors of Indian cuisine by
explaining the characteristics of its essential ingredients—hot chili powder,
aromatic coriander, sweet cumin, roasted nutty mustard seeds, bold
asafetida, and hearty turmeric. But here is the twist: the book also reveals
the methods used to incorporate them into exquisite, authentic recipes.
Keeping clarity and simplicity in mind, Saluja has created recipes easy
enough for beginners, yet inspirational enough to encourage inventiveness
in the more seasoned cook.
Readers will discover that seasoning with chounk is one of the basic
techniques used to enhance the flavor of beans and legumes. A dish of red
lentils will become memorable when infused with aromatic seasoning of
hot ghee, fresh herbs, and spices; and cooking with masala, or curry paste,
can turn a humble dish into the essence of Indian cuisine.
Saluja has taken the fear out of approaching unfamiliar culinary fare.
Her recipe collection has been tasted and tested throughout her more than
twenty years of teaching and cooking Indian food.

Summer Reading Issue
Neeta Saluja, born in Agra, India, home of the Taj Mahal, has been
teaching Indian cooking for more than two decades in the United States,
Australia, and Japan. She lives in Madison, Wisconsin, with her husband.

“Documents how dramatically White House interiors
have evolved since 1800.” —Publishers Weekly
Ever since the White House was built more than 200 years ago, its décor has been of
great interest to visitors, historians, and anyone interested in our nation’s history
and how it was manifested in our country’s most famous residence. Influenced
not only by styles of the moment, the White House interiors are even more
affected by the sensibilities of its occupants, our presidents and their first families.
This updated edition features new photos and information from recent
renovations of the Green Room, Queens’ Bedroom, Family Dining Room,
Lincoln Bedroom and Lincoln Bed, Lincoln Sitting Room, and the Oval
Office. Also highlighted will be china from the Clinton and Bush administrations and a fire screen acquired during the Obama Administration.
Author Betty Monkman shares historical facts and anecdotes revealing
how the furnishings and artwork showcased in this book came to the White
House, sometimes under controversial circumstances. She describes how
Mary Todd Lincoln earned public criticism for indulging in excessive
shopping expeditions and expenditures in the early days of the Civil War.
Readers also learn how Jacqueline Kennedy took a vastly different approach
to changes in the president’s residence, by working to transform the White
House into a place where visitors could learn about the history of the country.
Betty C. Monkman served more than thirty years in the Office of
the Curator, The White House, retiring as Chief Curator in 2002. She is a
frequent contributor to White House History.
Formerly a staff photographer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Bruce
White specializes in photographing art and architecture.

Volume the First, housed at the Bodleian Library of
Oxford University, England, includes the following
stories: Frederic & Elfrida, Jack & Alice, Edgar &
Emma, Henry & Eliza, Mr Harley, Sir William Mountague, Mr Clifford, The beautifull Caſsandra, Amelia Webster, The Visit, The Mystery, The three Sisters,
Detached peices, Ode to Pity
Forever immortalized as the author of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen actually produced her first “book” as a teenager, Volume the First. Taking its name
from the inscription on the cover, this brilliant little collection includes
the stories, playlets, verses, and moral fragments she wrote likely from ages
twelve to eighteen. The volume was produced for the enjoyment of her family
and close friends—entertaining it was and is!
Now it is available for all of us to see.
As a young author, Jane Austen delighted in language, employing it with
great humor and surprising skill. She was adept at parodying the popular
stories of her day and entertained her readers with outrageous plotlines and
characters. Kathryn Sutherland’s introduction places Austen’s earliest works in
context and explains how she mimicked even the style and manner in which
this contemporary popular fiction was presented and arranged on the page.
The work of a young adult, Volume the First nevertheless reveals the development of the unmistakable voice and style that would mark her as one of the
most popular authors of all time. None of her six famous novels survives in
complete manuscript form. This is a unique opportunity to own a likeness of
Jane Austen’s work as originally written—in her own hand.
Jane Austen, perhaps best known as the author of Pride and Prejudice, is
one of the most beloved novelists in the English language. She lived all her life
in England and died at the age of forty-one, leaving a literary legacy hard to
match by any author before or since.
Kathryn Sutherland is Professor of Bibliography & Textual Criticism,
University of Oxford. She is the author of Jane Austen’s Textual Lives: From
Aeschylus to Bollywood and the editor of the Digital Edition of Jane Austen’s
Fiction Manuscripts.

Constant rivalry with Barcelona
When Cristiano Ronaldo joined Real he
started scoring more than he had ever done
with United. He played a great part in Real’s
success. During Ronaldo’s first two seasons
with Real the club gathered so many points
that at any other time it would have secured
victory in La Liga, Spain’s top league. But
the invincible Barcelona scored even higher
both seasons and Real had to settle for
second place. But in the season 2011-2012 no
club could touch Real, and Ronaldo scored
more goals than ever before. He scored for

Real Madrid is the most successful football club
in the world. After the 2011-2013 season Real had
won La Liga 32 times, Copa del Rey 18 times, and
the UEFA European Champions League 9 times.
The club’s arch rival, FC Barcelona, had won La
Liga 22 times, the Copa 25 times, and the UEFA
European Champions League 4 times.
The clubs have very different recruitment
policies; Barcelona places great stress on homegrown talent, raising it’s own players from an
early age. These boys become the key players
in the first team, such as Xavi, Messi, and Iniesta.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, prefers to buy
superstars from other clubs and build the team
around them – such as CRISTIANO RONALDO.
The midfielder Khedira and the attackers Di Maria and Callejón also
played a great deal. The coach
was the colourful Mourinho.

Matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona
are called “El Clásico” and are usually very
exciting. To begin with Ronaldo didn’t do too
well against Barcelona. But on the 21st of April
2012 that changed. Ronaldo and his Real Madrid
teammates turned up at Camp Nou in Barcelona,
where Real hadn’t managed to win a match in 5
years. Ronaldo changed that when he scored the
winning goal for Real in the 73rd minute after a
great run and an assist from Özil. It was Ronaldo’s
finest hour. Not only did he secure a victory over
the arch rivals on their own home ground, but
he also ensured that Real would be crowned
Champions of Spain for the first time since 2008!

Zlatan was quick to assert ahimself with Ajax. The team
won the Dutch championship of 2001-2002 under the firm
control of coach Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman Van der Vaart
was the team’s highest goalscorer, followed by the Egyptian
Mido and then Zlatan.
During the next season, Ajax finished second after PSV
Eindhoven, but Zlatan couldn’t stop scoring. In his first
Championship League game, on September 17th 2002,
Zlatan achieved s a roaring success by scoring both
goals for Ajax in 2-1 victory over the French team Lyon.
Zlatan scored a total of 21 goals in 42 matches for Ajax,
or a goal in every other game on average.
In the 2003-2004 season, Zlatan again became Dutch
champion under the leadership of Koeman. The Swede
was Ajax’s top goalscorer.
Zlatan’s relationship with Van der Vaart, one of the
major players on the team, faced some serious troubles
at the start of the 2004-2005 season. They got into a
scuffle in an international match between Sweden and
Holland, and the Dutchman ended up injured. The rivalry
between these two key Ajax players led to Zlatan being
sold to Juventus late in August 2004. At that time, he had
for long time been under the watchful eye of most major
European teams.

Franz Kline
By Harry F. Gaugh
A classic study of the iconic American painter.
Franz Kline (1910–1962) was a leading figure among the Abstract
Expressionists: his energetic black strokes on a white field are as
recognizable as Jackson Pollock’s drips or Mark Rothko’s rectangles of
glowing color. Kline’s mature works of the 1950s display an astonishing
mastery, locking contending forces into architectonic configurations that
seem even larger than their actual size, which is considerable. According to
an oft-repeated story, Kline arrived at his signature style in a single moment
of inspiration, when he saw the individual strokes of one of his figurative
drawings blown up to an enormous size with an opaque projector.
The reality, of course, was somewhat more complex, as Harry F. Gaugh
reveals in this sensitively written account of Kline’s career. Drawing on
extensive interviews with Kline’s associates, Gaugh traces the artist’s
development through his early training as an illustrator in Boston and
London; his penniless years in Greenwich Village, turning out figurative
canvases for a few devoted patrons (and murals for barroom walls); and
the progressive experiments with abstraction that finally led to his famous
breakthrough. Gaugh also reminds us of the depth of Kline’s oeuvre; in
truth, the artist had never confined himself entirely to black and white,
and before his untimely death he had begun a series of vibrantly colored
canvases. The text is complemented by 170 illustrations, reproducing an
ample selection of Kline’s work, as well as notes on conservation and
technique, and a detailed chronology.
A model of art-historical writing, Franz Kline is, remarkably, still the only
available monograph on its subject. It belongs on the book shelf of everyone
with an interest in American painting.

Las Meninas. The Nude Maja and The Clothed Maja. The Garden of Earthly
Delights. The Museo del Prado in Madrid, which grew out of the Spanish
royal collections, holds the masterpieces of Velázquez and Goya, and
many exceptional works by their illustrious countrymen. Yet it is equally
strong in the work of Bosch (especially Bosch!), Rubens, Titian, and other
Flemish and Italian painters. The Prado represents the Old Masters at
their most expressive and fantastic, so this book—which reproduces the
museum’s finest paintings, sculptures, and objets d’art—has a power that
belies its miniature size.
Felipe Vicente Garín Llombart is former director of the Museo
del Prado.

Treasures of the Uffizi
. . . and Italy’s greatest museum in the palm of your hand!
The Birth of Venus and the Primavera. The Doni Tondo. The Venus of
Urbino. The Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, one of Europe’s oldest public
museums, contains first-rate works by Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo,
Raphael, Titian, and nearly every other Italian master, not to mention
many foreign ones—think of the Portinari Altarpiece, the masterwork of
Hugo van der Goes. In fact, it is impossible to understand the Renaissance
without knowing the Uffizi’s collection. Thankfully, with this handsome
little volume, you can take its finest paintings with you wherever you go.
