LADIES
SCOTTISH
OPEN
2012
Welcome to the July
issue of the News, the
newsletter designed
specifically for you
the Members of
Archerfield Links.
May was a busy month for the Club with
the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies
Scottish Open held between the 3rd and
5th of May on the Fidra Links. The event
moved to an earlier space in the season to
avoid clashing with the Olympics in August.
As many of you will have experienced the
temperatures in early May were unseasonably
cold and this posed some challenges for the
green keeping team in particular, however
the comments from the Players and the Tour
have been fantastic.
Every hole’s a cracker, It’s the best
course I’ve seen outside of a major
championship venue. laura davies
My thanks go to the Members of Archerfield
Links who kindly gave up their beautiful
Fidra course and facilities for the week.
The feedback from the players is that the
facilities at Archerfield are some of the
best that they experience all year.
fraser munro, let tournament director
The sun came out for the final round,
along with several hundred spectators,
to see 19 year old Scottish player Carly
Booth take her maiden title on the Ladies
European Tour.
The club is very impressive and welcoming
and the course is fantastic to play.
Congratulations on such a successful event
and I look forward to returning to defend my
title next year! Carly Booth – 2012 Champion
The leading amateur title was hotly
contested by three Archerfield Members
Stephen Docherty, Lawson Muncaster and
Malcolm Duck, with Stephen finally taking
the title with a combined score of 25
under par with his professional partner
Kylie Walker.
Early June saw the launch of the events
facility at the Waterfront, providing a
truly special venue for a host of occasions
from extravagant birthday celebrations to
exclusive weddings. The new Waterfront
hosted its first wedding on June 2nd
with around 150 guests marvelling at
the stunning views out to sea from the
glass fronted pavilion. The facility has
been specifically built to be as flexible
as possible so as it is suitable not only for
celebrations but also for business events
from conferences to car launches. We hope
that many of you will enjoy your experience
in the latest development at the Club at
one of the Members Balls this August.
We do still have a limited number of tables
remaining for the ball on Friday 24th
August. To enquire about booking a table

SUMMER Maintenance
Despite the prolonged winter weather and
unseasonably cold temperatures, the golf
courses have begun to benefit from the
warmer weather towards the end of May.
The increased soil temperatures over the
last two months have enabled us to work on
the playing surfaces, all be it some three to
four weeks later than we would have liked.
In anticipation of an earlier rise in
temperatures the required fertiliser
and conditioning products had already
been applied, however in many areas
the whole process had to be repeated to
adapt to the changing conditions.
This June has been one of the wettest
on record, one of the results of this being
extraordinary growth across the whole
estate and all efforts of the greenkeeping
team have been geared to trying to
control weeds, grass growth and rough
areas, as well as maintaining normal June
course maintenance procedures. This work
continues in earnest as we progress through
the summer.
We will also work on verti-cutting the greens
and aprons of both courses. This process is
undertaken to remove the rogue grasses
within the fescue based greens followed by
top dressing on a regular basis which also
aids this process.
The playing surfaces will improve as
the warmer weather permits. Further
overseeding will be carried out in late
August to further enhance and improve
the fescue mix on the greens, helping to
dominate the unwanted species of grass
within the sward.
Works will then be concentrated on
strengthening all areas of the courses for
the rigours of the winter months ahead.
