Fly to Paradise
Concordia
By Eric Whitacre
Featuring: Krista Kofoed and Sarah Walker
And all she ever thinks about is being in any other
place than this, 'Cause she remembers having wings
but she's forgotten what it's like to feel a paradise
of bliss. And all I want to do is fly, just fly, Just fly.
And all she ever thinks about is memories of soaring
through the sky, 'cause she remembers having wings
but she's forgotten what it feels like to fly, and all I
want to do is fly, and all I want to do is fly, just fly!
expressing themselves, I feel like there is a huge gap
in the choral music world that represents a growing
segment of society (it is estimated that 1 in 49 boys
now have Autism). I would love for my singers to
be able to perform a piece that reflects the constant
joy and love that my son and people like him bring
to everyone around them ... We have tried through
our choirs to help our youth expand their vision,
feel hope, and appreciate virtue and beauty. In the
past, we have done benefit concerts for non-profits
that help children in need. Last year we focused
on raising awareness and funds to help a mother
of 4 who has terminal brain cancer. Helping these
youth see beyond their typical lives, develop empathy, and help others has been sweet and rewarding. This spring (2015), I would love to help raise
their awareness for people with disabilities. We have
many youth in our choir program who either have
a disability or a sibling with a disability, and I know
this would mean a lot to them to be honored in this
way."
Mr. Courtney quickly replied. He rarely takes comission requests, but this request resonated with
him because he has a son with Down syndrome,
who succumbed to leukemia at the age of four. Ms.
Susan Bentall Boersma wrote the lyrics. This piece
has been a labor of love for all of us. It has been deep
and meaningful to the Cantus singers, over 80% of
whom have said that either they or someone close
to them has special needs. We are thrilled to share
the Idaho premiere of The Image of God with you
tonight.

Note from the Artistic Director: I am grateful to
introduce a brand new piece by respected composer Craig Courtney and commissioned by Cantus
Youth Choirs. The following is an excerpt from the
letter I sent to Mr. Courtney with the commission
request:
"In 2008, my son Brock was born. He has Down
Syndrome, Autism, a Sensory Processing Disorder,
and an immune deficiency ... And he is the most
beautiful, glorious, resilient, optimistic person I
have ever known. In his five short years he has already survived 8 surgeries or procedures. He is a
fighter, and has changed my husband and me for
the better, and given us fresh lenses through which
to see and appreciate the beauty in life. Because
people like my son have difficulty advocating for or

DUANE RENO is a seasoned performer whose versatile range and dynamic stage presence have captivated
audiences throughout the world. Mr.
Reno recently returned as a member of
the elite 2014 U.S. Army Soldier Show, a
live Broadway-style variety performance
show with the motto: “Entertainment for
the Soldier, by the Soldier.” As a featured
soloist, Mr. Reno toured with his 21 fellow castmates to over 31 installations in
the continental United States, as well as
Germany, Korea, Japan and, for the first
time in the Army Soldier Show’s modern
history, to the soldiers in combat, traveling to Kuwait and Afghanistan.
Mr. Reno was a Distinguished Honor Graduate of the Military Police Company in 2005 and serves on active duty
for the Oregon National Guard in Clackamas, Oregon while also performing regularly in his church and community. Mr.
Reno performs with the music worship
team at Court Street Christian Church in
Salem, Oregon, and even worked as their
Interim Worship Pastor from 2009 to
2011. Equally comfortable as a classical
bass or contemporary tenor, Mr. Reno
has performed in a variety of capacities
and shows, ranging from classical solo
work to musicals, jazz and traditional
choral ensembles, community events
and weddings. His passion for music and
performing transcends genres and allows
him to enjoy a rich and diverse performing life.
Mr. Reno’s love of the arts was ingrained in him as a young child. As the

son of a professional ballet dancer, he received great encouragement and support
in the arts throughout his childhood. His
passion grew faster than he did watching
performers like Billy Joel, John Cougar,
Michael Jackson, Boys II Men, Aerosmith, and he was especially influenced
by Bobby McFerrin’s Don’t Worry Be
Happy.
Mr. Reno met his lovely wife Sarah
while working at Court Street Christian
Church. She keeps his craziness in balance, while helping to raise their lively,
loveable, and memorable girls: Lily, 7
and Maci Jo, 3.
ADAM HEIMBIGNER, also
known as “Gigantor,” is from South Jordan, Utah and stands an amazing 6’11”
tall (we knew you were wondering). He
is a highly-skilled vocal percussionist
(beat-boxer) and has been a member of
BYU’s award-zwinning a cappella group
Vocal Point since 2012. His involvement
in music started from his boyhood when
Mr. Heimbigner’s mother threatened to
put him in a boys’ choir every time he
misbehaved. She never made good on
her threat, so he enrolled himself, leading to a lifelong love affair with singing.
Mr. Heimbigner is also an accomplished
percussionist, having played with drum
lines, symphonies, orchestras, bands,
and jazz ensembles. Eventually he discovered the coalescence of his two passions: vocal percussion. He’s honed his
signature sound in various a cappella
groups and solo acts, winning awards for
his masterful mouth skills.

her time with TVYT Mrs. Jensen has directed Peter Pan, Seussical, and Annie, and
served as the musical director for School
House Rock!
Mrs. Jensen is currently serving as the
chair-person for the Meridian Arts Commission. She has been instrumental in
establishing city-sponsored theatrical
and musical opportunities for youth and
adults. In her spare time she enjoys playing
the violin with The Hymns of Thanksgiving Orchestra and the Serenata Chamber
Orchestra. Mrs. Jensen lives in Meridian
with her three amazing children and incredibly supportive husband.
We bid Sarah Foutz a fond farewell
We are so grateful to Mrs. Foutz for her 5
½ years of dedication to the creation and development of Cantus Youth Choirs. She was
there at the beginning—brainstorming names
for the organization, picking out outfits, creating bylaws, scoping out venues, chaperoning,
accompanying, enduring late-night (VERY
late-night) board meetings, our fashionable
and articulate Mistresss of Ceremonies and
much more.
So much of what Cantus has become, with
its warm environment and focus on involving
the whole family, is because of her.
We thank her for being an advocate for the
singers and their families, for helping Cantus
to become solvent, and for showing us some
killer dance moves on the San Francisco tour.
We love Mrs. Foutz and will miss her on the
Cantus Board of Directors.
Welcome Mary Jensen
Mary Jensen has graciously accepted the vacated position on the
Cantus Youth Choirs Board of Directors. Please read Mrs. Jensen's
bio on the preceding page to get to
know her better.
Beating The Odds
According to Bloomberg, eight
out of ten startups fail in the first 18
months. Some Gallup studies show
that half of startups fail in their first
five years. Regardless of the source,
the outlook for startups doesn't
look good.
But we are still here!
At five years old, we're still a
young organization. We've been
pleased to discover that we knew
more than we thought we did. But
we've also discovered a whole lot of
what we didn't know too!
As we’ve thought about why
we've made it to year five, we've
also thought a lot about what has
made us successful. We don't think
it's been our venues, our music selection, our policies, or our tours.
Sure, these things may contribute,
but we believe it all comes down to
the people.
Community is formed by people who value or love the same
things. Cantus is a community of
people who love excellence and
work together to create a place
where everyone can belong. Because of our board, our directors,
our volunteers, work-study staff,
the parents, youth, and the families
that have all come together, we have
not only survived, but sur-thrived
year over year for the last five years.
It is because of all of YOU that we're
still here, and we look forward to a
bright future together.
Special Thank Yous
We would like to thank our
friends at Gryphon Private Wealth
Management, our Season 20142015 sponsor, and the other advertisers contained herein. We appreciate their generous support.

Our Origination
In the beginning, we spent a full
year actively planning and developing this concept, and for the longest
time, we referred to it as “the choir.”
We researched community
choirs across the nation, IRS forms
and filing statuses, organizational
hierarchies, and even interviewed
people (without them knowing it!)
to be on the Board of Directors.
After spending a long time
thinking about what “the choir"
would be called, we finally found a
name that we liked: Cantus.

Cantus is Latin for "chant,"
or "sing." We loved this name,
and having sung a lot of Latin, we
thought nothing of how it might
be pronounced! We've heard a lot
of fun pronunciations of this word:
can-toos, or can-tuss, and Keith’s
personal favorite can't-us.
The best way to remember how
to pronounce this word is to put the
emphasis on the first syllable and
say kahn (like Genghis Khan) and
then toose (rhymes with noose).
Go ahead, try saying it out loud
... unless of course the lights have
dimmed and the concert's already
begun.
The Cantus Coin
Another season is drawing to a
close and at the end of each season,
we present our graduating seniors
with a Cantus Coin.
Season 2011-2012 was our second season, and first season for our
high school division. Cantus Youth
Choirs commissioned a coin to be
presented to all graduating seniors.
The Cantus Coin is made of
iron and coated in antique brass.
Wrapping the circumference of the
Cantus Coin is the Cantus motto
for seniors: Semper Canimus, “always we sing.” We have chosen this
as our motto for graduating seniors
because we hope that they'll continue to sing as they move on to the
next phase of their lives.
Our Mission
Cantus Youth Choirs is a community choral program for youth
of Idaho’s Treasure Valley. Cantus
Youth Choirs strives to provide
quality music education with the
goal of attaining the highest level of
artistic excellence in choral music
performance.
The organization endeavors to
enrich the lives of youth from all
cultural, economic, musical, racial,
and religious backgrounds. Cantus
strives to foster the personal and
social growth of its members and to
promote their sense of self-worth,
discipline, and accomplishment.
Singers in Cantus Youth Choirs
work hard and love music. They
can trust their directors to provide
safe, nurturing environments and,
in turn, the directors can expect
the singers to respect the music,
the director and each other. They
come to rehearsal prepared, ready
to learn and eager to have transcendent musical experiences.
Singers in Cantus Youth Choirs
have high expectations of themselves and their directors, both
personally and musically. And, because of this, they achieve success.

Season V started with a bang!
Rehearsals began the second week
of September and after 15 weeks of
intensive rehearsal at our new rehearsal venue (Boise First Community Center), Cantus Youth Choirs
and Gryphon Private Wealth Management presented our Season
2014-2015 Winter Concert.
Soprano Melissa Heath made
a reprise appearance from season
two, and performed our traditional
Winter Concert mass finale number, O Holy Night. Organ, piano,
orchestra and nearly 250 voices
joined her for this breath-taking
performance.
Preceding this selection, Ms.
Heath favored us with The Lord's
Prayer, sung with the Cantus Youth
Choirs Chorale, and Deck The Hall,
a spritely selection requiring vocal
acrobatics that Ms. Heath made
look easy. Both selections were accompanied by our virtuosic guest
organist David Young from Boise's
Cathedral of The Rockies.
Mr. Young also played an unbelievably athletic arrangement of
Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella. We
Empowering youth and inspiring future innovators, entrepreneurs, creators,
humanitarians and artists through performance-based theater arts programs.

SUPERIOR rating for Tour V!
Cantus Youth Choirs just returned from tour to Southern California on March 29, 2015. There
were 123 youth, 15 chaperones, 5
staff members, 2 instrumentalists,
3 buses, and a partridge in a ... oh,
wait, we left him behind.
Tour began with loading charter buses at Boise First Community Center in the wee hours of the
morning. Nearly 17 hours later, the
buses arrived, the tourists ate a late
meal and then headed to bed.
Early the next morning, Cantus
loaded the buses and left for Disneyland and California Adventure
Resort. After a full day of frivolity,
Cantus returned to the hotel for a
much-needed night's rest.
The next morning, we again
loaded the buses and headed off
to Garden Grove High School for
our exchange/clinic with director
Kari Galeener. Mrs. Galeener and
Mrs. McCauley and Ms. Pedersen
were all colleagues in Salem/Keizer
School District in Oregon.
Cantus performed The Image
of God and Hope Will Lead Us On
for Mrs. Galeener and the choirs of
Graden Grove High School. After
many compliments, Mrs. Galeener then cliniced (choir-speak for
evaluated) Cantus and provided us
with some valuable advice and refined a few phrases in The Image of
God.
We made our way back to the
hotel to change into our concert
outfits and rehearse prior to our
performance at the festival.
Cantus loaded the buses, yet
again, and drove to the festival.
Cantus performed The Image of
God, directed by Erika McCauley
and accompanied by Keith McCauley (piano) and Lauren Rawlings
(violin). We then closed with Hope
Will Lead Us On, directed by Melody Paskett, accompanied by Keith
and Erika McCauley (piano duet),
Michelle Pedersen (cajon), Alyssa
Pinder (shaker), Heather Pinder
(bass), Elijah Reyes (guitar) and
featuring Erin Todd and Colette
Kofoed as soloists.
The next morning, we returned
to Disneyland and spent the day
making memories with our Cantus
friends. That night we assembled at
the Big Thunder Ranch amphitheater to hear how we ranked/rated.
We received a SUPERIOR rating, the highest possible rating to
be awarded. In addition, Miss Kofoed was awarded one of two soloist awards for her solo on Hope Will
Lead Us On.
After a full day, we loaded the
buses (at 12:30) and began the long
journey home. We arrived at 5 pm
and had everyone returned safely
to their families and the parking lot
cleared by 5:45pm.
We express our heart-felt gratitude to our Tour Coordinators
Dana Walker and Melody Paskett.
Truly, without them, tour would
not have happened. Every detail
was planned for and executed with
near perfection.
We also would like to thank our
wonderful parent volunteers who
chaperoned this trip. Thank you for
your sacrifice and effort to make
sure the kids had a positive experience.
How to enjoy a concert
For the uninitiated, attending a
formal concert can be intimidating.
We rarely have the opportunity to
attend formal gatherings, and we
occasionally feel uncomfortable
at them because we don’t want to
commit the proverbial faux pas and
reveal our uncouthness.
Concert etiquette doesn’t mean
we wear tuxedos and evening
gowns and talk down our noses at
others and poo poo them because
we are so much more cultured than
they. This is far from what concert
etiquette is all about!
Conforming to the rules of concert etiquette allows you and your
neighbors to enjoy the show. It’s as
simple as that...and over the years,
“enjoying” the show has come to
mean that we take care to do nothing that would distract from the
performance. This includes: suppressing all noise, refraining from
eating and drinking, dressing appropriately, and applauding correctly.
Applause is the way that we
show our appreciation to the performers. Applauding at the right
time can get a bit tricky … because
depending on the concert, the ap-
propriate time to applaud can
change.
At a rock concert people often
talk, scream, shout, laugh and even
sing along. This is all appropriate
in this setting. This is usually why
rock concerts are so loud ... the
band is trying to be heard over the
din!
In the formal concert setting,
however, participating in these behaviors is a sure ticket to getting
kicked out! The secret is to sit quietly while the performers perform,
(that IS why you came, right?).
Once they're done, applaud.
In a formal concert, here are
the best times to applaud:
1. When the conductor takes
the stage. It is customary to applaud when the conductor first
comes out onto the stage. This
draws everyone's attention to the
show and recognizes the conductor's efforts at having prepared the
ensemble to perform.
2. After a piece is concluded,
AND the conductor has lowered
their hands. A good rule of thumb:
if the conductor’s hands are up,
yours should probably stay down.
The conductor may want the audience to enjoy a few seconds of
silence before accepting applause.
Sometimes the conductor may
wish to perform a set of songs before accepting applause. This is often done for artistic reasons (and in
some cases, to use less time!)
3. For a soloist. In a formal
concert, applause for a soloist
should be deferred until the end
of the piece. The conductor may or
may not direct the soloist to take a
bow. To ensure that the piece is finished, see 2.
4. After the final piece. Standing ovations, or standing while
clapping, is appreciated if you think
the performance is deserving.
