Years ago when gas stations dotted Derby Street and Rich Stafford was a high
school track star there was a little pizza place on Lafayette Street next to an
electronics store called Early Radio.
Placido’s Pizza, Best In Town.. was run by an an Italian husband and wife who I
never heard speak English. Their kids helped to run the place. The room was
small, a few booths and a counter, nothing more. To this day it is my favorite
Salem pizza pie. I would fight my way through a pack of wild and hungry dogs for a
single slice.
We have many choices for pizza these days. If you want old school you can go to
Mandee’s Pizza on upper Essex Street. They just may be the last of the original

and gone. There are a few full-service restaurants that serve their own pies. Bertini’s on
Canal Street, and Rockafella’s and The Adriatic both on Washington Street leap
to mind.
We all have our favorites and have discussed
them in a spirited manner both on-line and in
person.
Over the last few years new entires have entered the market. Flying Saucer Pizza
Company, North House Pizza and a little shop that calls itself Amazing Pizza
have stepped with their own pies and generated more than a little buzz. The
recent opening of Bambolina has increased the pizza pie noise level in the city.
We will be looking at exploring wonderful world of Salem pizza pie over the next
few months. Sicilian, Neapolitan and Greek....we will see what they are all about in
this place and that place, and maybe the other places too.
Feel free to let us know what you think. Where do you go for your pie? Do like to
sit down at the restaurant to eat or do you prefer take-out? Red sauce or white
pizza? Plain cheese, pepperoni, or do you go for a broccoli and kale with some
buffalo chicken?
