September 2012
Salom advances to final round of state TOY
Congratulations to Irene Flores-Salom, a teacher at
Sambrano Elementary School, who is not only the Region 19 Elementary Teacher of the Year but also one
of three finalists for the Texas Elementary Teacher of
the Year!
San Elizario ISD was notified on August 16
that Salom was one of three candidates from a
pool of twenty regional winners whose application was selected to move on to the final round
for the Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year
(TOY) competition. She was surprised with the
news of her selection as a state finalist on August
20 when Principal Marta Alvarez made the announcement at a luncheon for faculty. She will
next travel to Austin to be interviewed by a
panel of judges on September 15 with the winners to be announced at the Texas TOY Awards
Ceremony in October.
Salom received the regional honor on August
13 at the annual Region 19 TOY Awards Gala
held at the El Paso Convention Center. She
was selected for the award from a group of 10
candidates nominated by area school districts and will
represent the Region 19 service area at the Texas TOY
competition to take place this fall. Salom had previously been named the San Elizario ISD Elementary
Teacher of the Year in May.
Salom began her career in San Elizario ISD
five years ago and has served as a teacher for the
4-5 ASC Special Education unit. She earned a
bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2007.
San Elizario ISD would also like to recognize
CTE teacher Bonita Whittington from San Elizario
High School who represented the district in the secondary Teacher of the Year category in the Region 19
competition. Whittington has been an educator for
over 23 years with 16 of those as a teacher at San Elizario High School. She has also served as a sponsor
for several student organizations including Business
Professionals of America, National Technical Honor
Society, and UIL Academics.
Good luck to Irene Flores-Salom as she prepares to wow the Texas TOY judges this fall!
