Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
(CHLA) through the Literally Healing
Program.
All books will go directly to the patients.

Priests are selfless sources of inspiration, wisdom and
comfort who dedicate their lives to guiding us through
daily sacraments as well as life's most extraordinary events.
With minimal compensation and little or no pension, they
often retires with nothing to fall back on.
Your Gift
Your gift to the Priest Retirement Fund helps provide a
monthly stipend to retired priests of the Archdiocese of
Los Angeles. For most priests, this assistance is their only
means of support. This fund helps many senior priests
stay well and active in our communities.

Why
we
Offer
the
Communion Cup
at
Mass
All parishes of the Archdiocese are asked to offer the
Communion cup to the faithful at Mass, especially at Sunday
and feast day Masses. This policy follows the directive of the
General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), which has
been in place since 1970:
Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it is distributed under
both kinds. For in this form the sign of the Eucharistic banquet is more
clearly evident and clear expression is given to the divine will by which the
new and eternal Covenant is ratified in the Blood of the Lord…. (281)

looking forward to the end of the school year and family
vacations. But, for a moment I would like you to think back
to September of last year and our Annual Stewardship
Renewal. It's probably a distant memory for some of
us, but the theme for that renewal was Prayer. We were
urging our community to set aside some time each day
for prayer. We were also hoping that we would develop a
habit of prayer. I imagine that many of you, like me, found
that developing that habit was difficult.
In his book Rediscover Catholicism, Matthew Kelly,
compares developing a habit of prayer to writing a novel;
they both require discipline. While
the romantic image of an author
might be in an inspirational setting
with words flowing on to the paper,
it's just not true. It is mostly hard
work and that's why so many books
remain unfinished. Prayer is similar
in many ways. Prayer is one of the
most difficult things we will ever do.
Mr. Kelly put it succinctly when he
wrote, "You don't become a great
writer by writing only when you feel
inspired to write. And the Saints did not become such fine
ambassadors of God on earth by praying only when they
felt like praying. In each case a daily discipline is required."
We can see that in our scriptures with all the descriptions
of the Jesus and disciples in prayer.
Developing a habit of prayer requires some prayer every
day. So over the summer months when things are a little
"looser", or when you take your family vacation, don't
take a vacation from prayer. You can start with attending
Mass. If you're in another state or country find a nearby
Church and experience the Mass with local influences
or in another language. If you are out to dinner, why
not cause a stir by saying grace at the restaurant table.
No matter where you are, work at maintaining your daily
prayer habit.
As our Stewardship prayer says, "Transform us through
the power of your Spirit to nurture a Stewardship way of life
marked by faith-filled prayer, service to our neighbor, and
generous sharing."

M25 Outreach - St. L awrence of Brindisi
Join Matthew 25 on Saturday, June13 at St.
Lawrence of Brindisi to feed the homeless and
needy in the community. Volunteers are needed
to prepare sandwich meals that morning and to distribute
these meals at St. Lawrence.
Donations of clothing and hygiene and toiletry products
are desperately needed for this project (bath soap, shampoo,
conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes.)
Rockin' Readers SLB joins us to read to the small children
present with their parents. Volunteers are welcome to bring/
donate books and also read to the children.

The Catholic Worker
The Los Angeles Catholic Worker (LACW) was founded in 1970
to serve the poor and homeless on LA's Skid Row.
When do we go? Six volunteers from American Martyrs go to Catholic Worker
twice a month, on the 2nd Tuesday and 4th Thursday.
What do we do?
We help prepare and serve a midday meal from 9:30am-12 noon.
We do what the core team asks us to do: cutting and chopping
food, buttering bread and/or bagels, working the food line,
after meal clean-up and other tasks as assigned. Our work day
runs from 7:00am - 1:00pm which includes a one-hour round trip
drive to the "Hippie" Kitchen in downtown Los Angeles. We
coordinate with each other to carpool, as parking is limited.
How can I be one of the six American Martyrs parishioners
who go to the Catholic Worker?
A roster of those who regularly support this Matthew 25
Ministry is maintained. Usually, ten days or so before our next
scheduled day, those on our roster are asked, "who wants to
go this time?" If you would like to go, contact the coordinators
listed below and we will attempt to place you on a future team.
Requirements: Be on time, commit for the whole day's work,
wear clothes that you don't mind getting food stained, and
a hat (gloves are provided). You have one optional break to
sit and eat the meal that is being served. Above all, treat our
customers with dignity, respect, and a smile. You must be at
least 16 years, or older. You also must be part of the American
Martyrs team of six previously identified.

WHY NAMETAGS?
Several times in recent months we have
encouraged everyone at Sunday Mass to create a
name tag. Why? What's in a name? With apologies
to Shakespeare, a lot.
Knowing someone's name is not only a sign of
respect, names also signify our individuality and,
when we gather for Mass, remind us that each
person has a special part in the Body of Christ.
Many of us sit in the same pew every week, and
recognize the people around us. But maybe we
don't know their names. And there are people at
Mass every Sunday whom we may not know at all. This nametag was found in the Church when cleaning
up after October's 'Nametag Sunday.' We think it
