Annual Report 2009–2010 - Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles
Annual Report 2009–2010
Monique Maas Gibbons currently
serves as the VP of Resource
Development on the JFS Board
of Directors. She co-chaired the
2009 JFS Gala Dinner, and is once
again co-chairing the 2011 JFS
Gala Dinner. She has also served
on the Haven House Board, is a
Past Chair of the JFS Programming
Committee, and has been on the
SOVA Advisory Committee as well.
Monique, her husband Bradley,
and their children Barry and Emilie
volunteer as a family at the JFS
Passover Seders and donate
regularly to SOVA.
“We’re a family, so it’s important for us to help other families.
We are very aware of how fortunate we are, and we love being
able to give back to JFS to help others in need. We feel it’s very
important for our children to realize that we’re extremely lucky
to be able to help other people in the community.”
—Monique Maas Gibbons
Message from the President
and the Chief Executive Officer
This past year has shown how Jewish Family Service would not exist
were it not for the strength, partnership and commitment of each of
you, our family members. Without our passionate volunteers, donors,
friends and staff members, the ever-increasing need for our services
could be overwhelming. Yet instead of faltering, JFS continues to thrive,
providing comprehensive services that are as vital and varied as the
people we serve.
California continued to face significant economic challenges last year.
Individuals and families are coming to JFS with more systemic and
complex problems. The parents who lost their jobs need emergency
cash assistance to pay bills, groceries to keep their family fed and
counseling to adjust to the loss of self-identity and self-value. As the
following stories illustrate, our Jewish Family Service team members
welcome, support and help them regain their independence.
No matter the financial and political challenges, JFS has remained
steadfast in its commitment to provide a safety net for individuals
and families in need of counseling, food, shelter and other services.
Whether children or adults, singles or seniors, when someone was
in need, JFS responded.
We conclude the year thankful for our partners who helped us respond
to the call for help nearly 100,000 times in the last twelve months and
confident that the year ahead will bring exciting opportunities for all of
the JFS family members. Thank you for your generosity and friendship.
Jeff Nagler, 2008–2010 Board President
Paul S. Castro, JD, Chief Executive Officer

February
On January 27th, the JFS {
Family Violence Project
raised more than $100,000 at
the Empowerment Event, a
special birthday celebration in
honor of JFS board member
Abby J. Leibman and in
memory of Nina C. Leibman.
JFS programs and services
continue to attract local and
national attention in the media.
In February, the Wall Street
Journal featured an article about
an anonymous online survey
conducted jointly by JFS {
Aleinu Family Resource
Center and the Orthodox
Union about marital satisfaction
in the Orthodox community.

What do you get when you mix
Passover in Los Angeles with
200 volunteers, 600 participants,
100 bottles of grape juice, 80
seder plates and 4 very famous
questions? Our Clarence
Gerber Memorial Passover
Celebration! This year marked
the 31st Community Seder.
February
In early 2010, JFS moved
to new administrative
headquarters located at 3580
Wilshire Blvd. More than 100
guests came to tour our new
space and watch as we hung
the mezuzah on our new
front door at an Open House
held in February.
About JFS
Hundreds of people showed
their support at the JFS Gala
Dinner on May 23rd, where
the Law Firm of Klee, Tuchin,
Bogdanoff & Stern LLP was
presented with the Spirit of
Humanity Award, and Rabbi
Elliot Dorff was honored with
the Anita and Stanley Hirsh
Award. Guests enjoyed a
delicious meal, viewed a
special video about the many
different services and programs
provided by JFS, and were
treated to a performance by
Broadway Bound.
In 1854 Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles (JFS) was the first charity
to be established in Los Angeles and today we are proud to offer ‘a
family of services’ to nearly 100,000 individuals a year. Through our
programs, we strive to meet the trials of poverty, hunger, family violence,
homelessness, substance abuse, families in crisis, disabilities and aging
with dignity.
JFS is an extended family that welcomes and serves people of all ages,
ethnicities and religions with compassion and caring. This compassion
grows out of deep roots in Jewish values and traditions: repairing the
world, helping others, not standing idly by. Our professional staff and
dedicated volunteers share a passionate commitment to enriching the
community and improving the quality of life for vulnerable populations
living in our city.
JFS is a beneficiary of The Jewish Federation

Our annual Tools for School
Drive was more successful than
ever this year, bringing in school
supplies for hundreds of LAUSD
students. Generous donations
of backpacks, colored pencils,
highlighters, notebooks, binders,
erasers, folders, crayons, rulers
and more poured in, giving JFS
the opportunity to provide more
than a thousand schoolchildren
with supplies to start their new
year of school on the right track!
In honor of Domestic Violence
Awareness Month, CBS
executives Nina Tassler, David
Stapf and Debby Barak hosted
“A Night of Hope,” an event
dedicated to raising funds for
the JFS { Family Violence
Project. Academy Awardwinner Geena Davis and
celebrated actor Jim Belushi
were among those who helped
raise more than $220,000!
In order to keep up with
demand, JFS { SOVA
relocated our Metro location
to a larger facility on La Brea
Avenue in West Hollywood.
The new site provides
increased food storage,
distribution capacity, and
allows us to assist more
people in need.
December
October
Haven House, a domestic
violence shelter located in
the Pasadena area, became
a program of JFS in October
of 2010. Haven House, a
30-day crisis shelter that can
accommodate 36 domestic
violence victims and operates
24-hours a day, 365 days a year,
offers its residents shelter, food,
clothing, medical assistance,
crisis intervention, legal
advocacy, and individual and
group counseling.
For the past 15 years, JFS has
organized an Adopt-A-Family
Drive, where members of our
community “adopt” a family in
need in time to provide them
with basic necessities and
small gifts for the holidays.
This year, an unprecedented
number of families were
referred to Adopt-A-Family,
and because of the generosity
of our community, nearly 200
families were adopted.
August
In August, JFS was honored to
host U.S. Health and Human
Services Secretary Kathleen
Sebelius for a speech and tour
of the JFS { Freda Mohr
Multipurpose Center.
Secretary Sebelius spoke to a
small group of seniors about
Medicare Fraud Prevention,
shared personal anecdotes
about her own family, and
toured our facility, guided by
JFS Chief Executive Officer and
CEO Paul S. Castro.

Roz Goldstine joined the JFS Board
of Directors in 1998, and she and
her husband Abner have been two
of JFS’s most generous supporters
ever since. In 2010, Roz served as
the JFS Gala Dinner co-chair, helping
to raise funds for essential JFS
programs and services.
“JFS helps those in need. It’s so simple,
but so important because there are so
many who need help, especially in the
present economic environment.”
—Abner Goldstine
“At some point in everyone’s life, they need
a little extra help, and JFS is their blessing.
I’m proud to be a member of the JFS family.”
—Roz Goldstine

Donors
The great sage Rabbi Tarfon said, “It is not your obligation
to complete the task, but neither are you at liberty to desist
from it.” The task of tikkun olam, the healing of our world,
is a daunting one, but each of us must do our part.
JFS offers our sincere thanks to our most generous donors
whose names are listed in the pages of this report. This is a
list of financial donations only, made between July 1, 2009–
June 30, 2010. Every effort has been made to ensure proper
recognition to each donor; we apologize for any errors.
We would also like to gratefully acknowledge the thousands of
individuals who have given gifts up to $500, donors of goods
and services, those who wish to remain anonymous, those
who give of their time, and others who support our work
whose names do not appear in this report.

Kim Canedy has been volunteering
with JFS for eight months. In
her capacity as a volunteer with
the Survivors of the Holocaust
program, she visits with a survivor
weekly, and together they enjoy
long walks, lunch, and laughter.
“I originally volunteered with the
intent of helping to fulfill the needs
of others. Ultimately, I walk away
being the one fulfilled.”
—Kim Canedy
John Gordon has been
volunteering with
JFS { Café Europa for
more than 15 years.
A child survivor of the
Holocaust, John also
serves on the JFS
Holocaust Advisory
Board and the Hungarian
Advisory Board.
“I volunteer because
I want to give
something back to the
Jewish community. I
work with Holocaust
survivors, and they give
far more back to me than
I give to them. They’re a
great group—it’s truly
a special family.”

serves on the JFS Gala Committee, and
volunteers at SOVA.
“I love so many things about JFS—
the number of amazing programs
throughout the city, the staff at
every location, and the JFS Young
Leaders volunteer events. I
especially enjoy the handson volunteer opportunities
that JFS Young Leaders
offers, like working in the
SOVA Community Food
& Resource Centers and
visiting with older adults
in their homes.”
—Lisa Ribner Wolfberg
For the past six months, Allan Newman has
been volunteering for the JFS { Family Violence
Project, serving as a positive male role model
for mothers and children living in JFS domestic
violence shelters.
“I am so passionate about
the JFS { Family Violence
Project—I’ve really found
my place in volunteering
here. I had no idea how
widespread domestic
violence in our community
is—there are many people
in need, and JFS is able to
help and support so many
of them. It’s so gratifying
to see these people get a
happy ending.”

“Years ago, my mother started attending a bereavement
support group at the JFS { Valley Storefront Senior Center,
and the community there was so supportive she ended up
going there every day. After she passed away, I wanted to
become involved at the place that meant so much to my
family, so I started teaching yoga classes there. It feels very
special to be able to give back.”
—Stephanie McGee
Stephanie and Jack McGee
have been involved with the
JFS { Valley Storefront Senior
Center for almost three years.
Stephanie, who volunteers
as a yoga instructor and leads
classes at the center, also
serves on the Valley Storefront’s
Leadership Council, and Jack
was recently honored at a Valley
Storefront fundraiser.
Melissa Andrizzi began her
relationship with JFS as a volunteer
in early 2010, and after developing a
passion for helping others, is now a
graduate student intern at JFS.
“I love the community
feeling at JFS—staff,
volunteers and donors
all feel like a family. Even
though I am not Jewish,
I feel accepted and have
truly seen how JFS
helps everyone in the
community, regardless
of religion, race or ability
to pay. It is extremely
rewarding to be a part of
this organization.”
