Dr Shobhan Manoharan is consulting dermatologist
for L’Oréal Paris and director of the Westside
Dermatology clinic in Queensland. Here, he shares his
most effective tips and the go-to ingredients to help
counteract the visible signs of ageing, plus editor
Ricky Allen’s pick of the latest skincare products.
Maintaining a youthful appearance all starts with
preventative skincare, according to Dr Manoharan,
who describes this proactive approach as one of his
“core practice philosophies”. He argues that while
ageing is inevitable and influenced by factors such as

genetics and the environment, “you can prevent, slow
and even reduce the common signs of ageing” by
nurturing your skin with effective, active products.
“Sunblock is one of those essential products and
should be used all year,” he says. “The cosmetic
benefits of sunscreen are in relation to reducing the
visible signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, age
spots, dullness and laxity [loose skin].”
Other essential preventative skincare products
include a good cleanser that doubles as a make-up
remover, and a moisturiser that’s appropriate for

your skin type, Dr Manoharan says, adding that
people with oily or acne-prone skin should opt for
lighter moisturisers, while heavier formulations are
better suited to those with dry or ageing skin.
He notes that keeping skin well hydrated has a
flattering, plumping effect and suggests looking for
a moisturiser containing hyaluronic acid, an element
that occurs naturally in the skin and has been shown
to effectively aid hydration.
Beyond the key basics for preventing and slowing
the signs of ageing, Dr Manoharan suggests selecting

products with powerful active ingredients. For daytime,
he recommends using vitamin B and C serums, which
can be worn under sunblock for a variety of antiageing benefits including extra protection from
environmental factors, while a night cream with retinol
(a form of vitamin A) or alpha hydroxy acid is ideal for
rejuvenating skin while you’re sleeping.
