As President of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, I invite
you to join us In the Fast Lane at the 2012 Midwest Veterinary
Conference. This year’s exciting program is geared toward not only
getting you up to speed on scientific advances, but helping you
navigate today’s fast-paced world.
As you know, veterinary medicine changes at such an extraordinary
pace, and keeping up can be a challenge. That’s why the MVC is
designed to accelerate your learning over a four-day period that’s
packed with hundreds of hours of CE. Whatever your specialty or
interests, the depth and diversity of the MVC’s educational program
will help you survive in the proverbial fast lane.
Our Conference offers 96 hours of small animal sessions; 42 hours
in large animal; 36 hours of behavior; 63 hours of technician- and
hospital staff-oriented sessions; and 69 additional hours in shelter
medicine, public health and holistic approaches. Do you need
business help in this tough economy? If so, there are 48 practice
management sessions. We also offer sessions in aquaculture and are
hosting 11 hands-on wet labs.
I’m also excited that for the first year, we are offering an Emerging
Issues Track on Friday. The focus will be on the Bayer small animal
practice visit report, as well as rural veterinary shortages and
implications for food animal medicine. Learn more about what you
can learn in this track on the following page.
When you’re not in sessions, you’ll have 21 hours over the course of
three days to get up to speed on advancing technologies and new
products in the Exhibit Hall. At the time of publication, more than
110 companies had signed up to attend the
show (page 14).
The OVMA also knows that the busy
veterinary professional needs a break from
the race of everyday life. That’s why the

events where you can wind down after a
busy day of sessions. Join us on Saturday evening for this year’s
MVC Live! entertainment featuring a popular country singer and
former American Idol (page 9). On Sunday, enjoy a meal on us
at MVC Sunday Lunch and listen to Dr. Jennifer Brandt discuss a
topic every veterinary professional has encountered (page 10). The
Auxiliary to the OVMA also hosts several events each year (page
13), and veterinary students can kick back with classmates and
OVMA Members at the annual Student Appreciation Reception (page
11). If you decide to venture out and explore Columbus, we’ve got
recommendations for you on page 4.
Our Conference is the largest state VMA-organized conference in the
United States, and over the years it really has become a national
meeting. We pride ourselves on offering great CE from expert
speakers at an economical price. I hope you will attend and find out
for yourself why veterinary professionals from across the country
return year after year.
See you in February!

NEW TRACK:
NEW PROGRAM:
Emerging Issues
The economy has obviously affected
all segments of our society — including
veterinary medicine. The Emerging Issues
Track on Friday tackles some tough questions
facing the profession to keep you current on
industry changes and explores how to adapt.
These sessions will highlight the recent Bayer
study and how veterinarians and their clients
are reacting to economic change and costof-care issues, as well as what strategies
the profession can employ to combat these
negative trends. In addition, the track will
also take a look at perceived veterinary
shortages in rural and food animal medicine,
whether the economic pretext is sustainable,
and how recent graduates who have been
encouraged to meet these perceived needs
are faring.
Join your colleagues for insight, introspection
and thoughtful discussion on how your
profession is reacting and should adapt to
new challenges.

Beginning in 2012, OVMA will set aside
money from MVC registrations for future
veterinary and technician student
scholarships. The new program, 5 for 5
for the Future, will dedicate $5 from every
veterinarian and technician registration over
the next five years to the fund. The OVMA
estimates that this program will raise $17,500
in revenue each year, for a total nearing
$90,000 over the five-year period.

Although the ABVP has been in existence
for almost 50 years, many practitioners do
not have a clear understanding of what the
board is about or know they can become
a specialist. In an effort to offer more
veterinarians the opportunity to become
a Diplomate in the American Board of
Veterinary Practitioners, an informational
session will be held on Friday at 5 p.m.
Anyone interested in learning more about
becoming a Diplomate is encouraged to
attend this seminar. A full description of
the program can be found in the Session
Description section on page 47.

Shelter Medicine
Poster Session
This year’s Shelter Animal Track will feature
a shelter medicine-themed poster session
on the Exhibit Hall floor. Posters authored
by veterinarians, shelter medicine graduate
students and veterinary students will present
current, relevant and exciting information
regarding shelter medicine. The Association
of Shelter Veterinarians will be judging the
submissions, selecting three finalists to
present in the Abstract Presentations session
of the Shelter Animal Track on Thursday. The
shelter posters will be on display Thursday,
Friday and Saturday during Exhibit Hall hours.
In addition, all approved abstracts will be
included in the 2012 Conference Proceedings.

Columbus might have
the reputation of being a
cow town, but we’ve got
much more to offer than
that. We certainly stay
true to our agricultural
roots, but the city has
grown up over the past
200 years. When visiting,
expect to be awed by
the city’s culture, dining,
shopping, sports and
entertainment. During
your stay, we invite you
to experience a slice of
Columbus at any one
of these memorable
museums, entertainment
venues, restaurants or
shopping centers.

Sporting Events. If you’re a Buckeyes fan, you might catch a glimpse
of Brutus while you’re in Columbus: Maybe at the OSU Women’s
Basketball game against Minnesota on Thursday (6 p.m., Value City
Arena), or if you stick around on Sunday to watch the men’s team
take on Wisconsin. If ice hockey’s more your style, cheer on the local
NHL team at OVMA Night with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday
after you finish up your sessions (7 p.m., Nationwide Arena; order
form on page 75).
Entertainment. Need a laugh after a long day of sessions? Head over to
Columbus’ own comedy club, the Funny Bone, located at Easton Town
Center. Comedians like D.L. Hughley, Pauly Shore, Kevin Nealon, Ohio’s
own Drew Carey and Dave Chappelle have performed at the club. Or,
catch a movie at the Arena Grand in the Arena District (below) a local
theater featuring a full-service bistro and bar.
buff, be sure to visit the Columbus Museum of Art, where you can
enjoy a self-paced “Guide By Cell” tour using your cell phone to learn
more about artists and their pieces. Or, enjoy a dramatic performance
put on by The Ohio State University Department of Theatre students.
Attractions. Be one with nature at Franklin Park Conservatory and
Botanical Gardens (above), where you can take a leisurely walk
through the Victorian Palm House, home to more than 40 types of
palms, and escape to the exotic orchid exhibition. Though there may
be snow on the ground, take a trip north to America’s top-rated zoo,
The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, where you can tour outstanding
indoor exhibits, including the aquarium and the Tide Pool Touch Tank.
(And don’t miss the Polar Bear Frontier!) And, no visit to Columbus
is complete without a trip to the Center of Science and Industry, a
highly ranked science museum that wins “Best of” awards year after
year. COSI offers three floors of exhibits to explore, fun for kids and
adults alike.
Culture. If you’re looking for some culture, German Village is the place
to go. The Village boasts stunning historic architecture, quaint bricklined streets, ethnic eateries and unique shopping venues. Another
cultural hotspot is the Short North Arts District, featuring a plethora
of galleries and one-of-a-kind shops. If

Dining & Nightlife. You won’t have to venture far from the Convention
Center to find delectable dining ranging from casual (Barley’s Brewing
Company, The Thurman Café) to unique (Betty’s, Haiku) to elegant
(DeepWood, Martini Modern Italian). Be sure to pick up the MVC
Dining Guide when you arrive at the Conference to get discounts to
these and many other superb Columbus restaurants.

MVC
Live!
featuring Josh Gracin
Josh Gracin has a diverse and impressive set
of skills. The most obvious is the voice that
captured the attention of millions of American
Idol fans during his season two run on what has
become an American cultural phenomenon.
His all-American good looks, earnest charm and passionate vocal
style earned him a devoted legion of fans, but beyond the stage,
Gracin possesses a poet’s heart and an ex-Marine’s discipline and
work ethic. It’s that potent combination of talent and tenacity that
set Gracin apart and is fueling the newest chapter in his career.
“I want to sing. I want to write. I want to produce. I want to put
myself on the chopping block,” says Gracin, who has always had an
independent streak and a creative maverick spirit that has served
him well. As a child, Gracin listened to and sang Rhythm & Blues,
Motown and oldies. “There’s not another genre that better reflects
situations in my life,” he says.
A Michigan native who grew up listening to country and R&B music,
Gracin auditioned for American Idol (placing fourth on season two)
while serving in the Marine Corps. Following his run on American Idol
and the completion of his military service, he released his self-titled
debut album in June 2004. The album was RIAA-certified gold and
spawned three top five singles. In 2008, Gracin released his highly
anticipated sophomore effort, We Weren’t Crazy.
In addition, Gracin has lent his vocals to The Disney Songbook on
“When I See An Elephant Fly” with Jim Brickman and the soundtrack
to Herbie: Fully Loaded on “Working for the Weekend.”
Gracin’s newest project has a very fresh, unique sound. “We aimed
to paint that picture and give it a feel that everything is in the room
with you,” he says of the album. “The band was able to live with the
songs and given the artistic freedom to bring in their interpretation
to the music.”
All songs on the album are identifiable slices of life that listeners can
readily embrace, including family life, lost love and romance. Gracin’s
favorite out of the collection is the poignant ballad “Enough.”
“Writing this song felt like a turning point artistically. I was better
able to take what was going on in my head and get it onto paper in a
way I feel is relatable to so many.”
This new album shows the growth of Josh Gracin as a writer, producer
and artist. From the early days of growing up in Michigan to now
being a father of four, Gracin has taken everything and poured it all
into REDEMPTION. The maturity in Gracin’s work is undeniable and
people will hear the difference.

The Elephant in the Room: Money in the
Veterinarian-Client Relationship
Promoting standards of excellence in the

sensitive to clients’ economic realities
can be challenging and stressful.
Financial issues are often fraught with
secrecy and high emotion; however,
research on clinician-patient interactions

Student Appreciation Reception
Thursday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
You’ve worked hard in veterinary school. Now’s your chance to sit back, relax and let OVMA
thank you for your hard work! The OVMA and Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. invite you to join us during
the Conference for a FREE event celebrating you! This is a great opportunity to meet veterinary
professionals, get acquainted with the OVMA, network with future colleagues, and make new
friends. You might even have fun, too!
Participating students will also have an opportunity to win
one of several door prizes. Food and beverages will be
served, so please make sure you RSVP for this event on
your Conference registration form (page 73) or online. Visit
the OVMA Students Facebook page at www.facebook.com/
OVMAstudents or the MVC Web site at www.mvcinfo.org/
students for event updates and RSVP information.
The 2011 Student Appreciation Reception was held at El Vaquero, a venue
popular with attendees. Hill’s Pet Nutrition, which sponsored the event,
brought several freebies and even awarded a $500 scholarship to one
lucky student.

Veterinary Exploration Conference & College Fair
Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
With the continued support of Ross University, the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association is
pleased to announce the return of the Veterinary Exploration Conference and College Fair. This
full-day educational experience stands alone in its effort to expose students to the diverse
career offerings in veterinary medicine. Each year, this program answers countless questions
students have about pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.
Registration for this program is open to high school juniors and seniors and undergraduate
students only. The $10 per-person fee associated with registration includes all program materials
and lunch.
For the first time in 2012, a Parent Workshop
will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
This meeting will give participants valuable
information on how to support a child
who has expressed interest in a career in
veterinary medicine. Topics covered will include
information on the veterinarian’s role in today’s
world and careers within veterinary medicine
to financial aid options for veterinary school.
The $20 per-parent fee includes all program
materials and lunch.
Registration for both the VEC and the Parent
Workshop will begin on Dec. 16. For more
information and to register, please visit www.mvcinfo.org/students.
In 2011, students were informed — and
entertained — by OVMA Member Dr. Bimbo
Welker, whose keynote speech shared insights
into large animal veterinary medicine.

This year marks the eighth annual Wings, Tails & Scales art exhibition and fundraiser. Painters, photographers and sculptors from across
the nation share their animal-themed works of art for good causes, visual enjoyment, and chances to win
monetary awards. Two pieces are selected for the Best of Show and People’s Choice awards. Jurors from Ohio
art associations select the pieces for the show and also select the Best of Show winner. All of the pieces are
available for purchase, and a portion of the proceeds benefits the
