John E. Kaminski, Ph.D., is a certified professor of Lawn Science at Pennsylvania State University. He graduated in 1998
from Pennsylvania State University, then earned a Masters in 2001 and a Ph.D. in 2004 from the University of Maryland.
The challenge is to find your own power and
discover what motivates and excites you.
He is currently conducting research into perfecting chemical and cultural management strategies for diseases and weeds
in lawns.
With a Bachelors in Human Resources, Éric Lachaine
worked for Intrawest and the Tremblant golf courses, in both the public and private sectors. His knowledge of the golf milieu comes from his jobs at two
golf clubs where he worked at two levels: maintenance as well as management and customer service.
Managing algae on golf course greens:
The infestation of algae on closely mowed greens continues to be difficult to control. Although treatment with various
fungicides such as chlorothalonil and mancozeb have shown themselves to be effective in arresting algae, these products must be applied at sufficiently short intervals prior to the appearance of symptoms, and results are inconsistent.
The use of chlorothalonil has been called into question, even though it is still permitted. Recent work has shown that it
is possible to arrest algae by using alternative methods, such as the application of phosphites, the appropriate type of
nitrogen and the use of wetting agents.
This seminar will take a look at recent literature and some of the new discoveries from recent studies.
Optimizing the control of disease by appropriate application methods:
Have you noticed your parasiticides have not been working as well as they used to? Are you worried by the increases in
limitations imposed by the federal and provincial governments on various types of chemical pesticides?
This practical training will help you discover methods for improving your parasiticide budget and effectiveness:
• Choosing end caps that reduce spray drift while attaining a greater watering reach
• Identifying the importance of the amount to be applied, jet pressure and the types of end caps
• Developing techniques for reducing the areas of grass on your golf course treated with anti-pesticides
There are basic elements that should not be overlooked in order to ensure effective communication.
What tools can businesses use to make sure that
information transmitted between upper management, managers, employees, between departments
and clients, are in line with the results expected?
Communication should begin in terms of what employees are expecting, the guidelines that must be
followed and ensuring that the message to be communicated to clients is in line with the company’s
mission and values.

Derek Vokey has been superintendent for 21 years and working in the golf industry for 35. He was born into the world of golf along with his entire family.
Brother Bob is vice president of Titleist, which created the most popular line
of sand wedges (Vokey Design) on the PGA tour, and his son will undoubtedly follow in his footsteps. Trained in Guelph more than 20 years ago, he
continues to further his knowledge and wants nothing more than to share
his expertise.
A lawyer for 30 years, Claire Brassard has made a name for herself in Quebec
and federal employment and labour law.
Serge Gauthier graduated with a Bachelors in biology from the Université de
Montréal. He was superintendent at Vallée-du-Richelieu in Ilesmere. Working
for Rain Bird International for more than eight years now has provided him
the opportunity to become involved in interesting study and implementation projects. Popularizer extraordinaire, he will share his clear and effective
tricks and approaches.
Ms Brassard is regularly invited to speak at conferences and to give training
sessions in labour law. In addition to sitting on the board of directors of various corporations, she is the author of several publications.
Providing flawless greens is the goal of all superintendents, but the whims of
the weather and disease add to the challenge. After much experimentation,
Derek Vokey, superintendent for more than 25 years, shares the tricks he’s
learned with the tool superintendents depend upon so much and that is key
to their success: the hydrometer.

ROOT ZONE MANAGEMENT
ON YOUR GREENS
Dear fellow conference goers:
The year 2012 will prove how our profession calls for multidisciplinary expertise and abilities.
We have tried to meet the requests sent our way while at the same
time provide a full and varied program.
We wish to thank the professionals who have accepted to impart
their knowledge so that we can meet the challenges that nature
throws our way every day.
Irrigation has once again become a priority, diseases continue to
evolve, there’s the issue of personnel management…. On top of it all,
we cannot afford to be discouraged during this time of turbulence.
We need to quickly equip ourselves with the tools of management.
I look forward to meeting everyone in the events organized for superintendents and our collaborators.

Adam Moeller has been an agronomist in the northeast region of the USGA
Green Section since April 2008. He studied at the University of Wisconsin–
Madison, where he graduated with a B.Sc. in horticulture, with special emphasis on lawn management. He also earned a Masters in agronomy from
Purdue University. He conducts scientific research into lawn management,
and has worked on several golf courses of distinction.
Maintaining a golf course of superior quality is an ongoing struggle for
most clubs in North America. Budget and personnel cuts have forced many
superintendents to adopt approaches for doing more with less. Several innovative practices and maintenance adjustments have been introduced
to the industry. This presentation will highlight the maintenance adjustments that maintenance personnel on golf courses can put into action in
face of diminishing budgets.
The performance of a putting green is significantly influenced by the functionality of the root zones the turf grows in. Drainage, organic matter content, and porosity characteristics are key physical properties that determine root zone functionality. Management practices including core and
solid tine aeration, sand topdressing, verti-cutting, drill and fill aeration,
and deep tine aeration will be discussed as they influence these properties
and putting green performance.
