Dear Guest
Dear Guest,
Welcome to Hilton Stockholm Slussen – the first Hilton in
Sweden!
We hope that you as our guest will have a pleasant stay
with us, be it your room, the service we provide, the food
in our restaurant or our environmental vision. It is all about
quality. And we are proud of that.
The Hilton Family of Hotels recognizes our environmental
responsibility and is committed to improving our
performance towards a sustainable future.
We as team-members have been conducting an active
environmental work programme since 1994. We have
produced this Environmental Statement to make it easier
for you to gain an understanding of what we have
achieved to date and what we are currently doing, with
regards to the environmental work that is so important to
us all. Also to let you know, that we would like to continue
in the same way, if possible – even more than before.
Making a business environmentally friendly is an ongoing
process and one in which we are all involved. The Hilton
Stockholm Slussen will adopt a long-term approach to
ensure that the operation works in balance with the cycles
of nature through constant, ongoing environmental work.
Our local objective is to be the most environmental
adapted Hilton in Europe and in 2011 Hilton Stockholm
Slussen received the award for being the most
environmental friendly Hilton hotel in Europe.

On the 28 of April, 60 000 bees moved in to Hilton
Stockholm Slussen and their honey is being served
at the *KRAV-labelled breakfast buffet. A more
locally produced product will be hard to find and at
the same time the hotels neighbours are getting help
with the pollination of their balcony flowers.
– Our goal is to be the most environmentally friendly
Hilton Hotel in Europe. This is a way to highlight our
work for the environment and to engage both our
employees and our guests, even if one bee only
produces approximately one teaspoon of honey in its
life. We will not be able to export, says Peter
Eriksson, Hotel Manager.
Since its opening in April 2001, Hilton Stockholm
Slussen has been working actively for the
environment. They were the first hotel in Sweden to
*KRAV-label their breakfast buffet and they were
even one of the first **Svan - labelled hotels.
City gardens – gardens in small spaces amidst big
cities – have become a concept.
And a garden doesn’t only need flowers but even
bees, which is what Hilton Stockholm Slussen
understands.
– Our bees could be a contribution to making
Stockholm an even greener and more beautiful city,
both for us who live here and for our visitors, says
Peter Eriksson.

*KRAV is a key player in the organic
market in Sweden since 1985.
**Svan is one of the leading
environmental labels in the world.
GENERAL
During the period from 2004 until December 2010,
we reduced our energy consumption (electricity,
district heating and gas) by 19.30% and our water
consumption by 24%.
Usage per guest vs. 2003
The quantity of waste we produce have since mid
1997 been on a constant low level of circa 300 – 350
grams/guest, which corresponds a reduction of
more than 76% against the consumption of 1996,
when we did not have any waste sorting. (From 12.5
tons waste per month to our current level of around 3
tons per month).

During the next five years (2009 – 2014) the
Hilton Family of Hotels are committing to a
range
of
measurable
sustainability
improvements, from the direct operations of
the hotels and our corporate offices. The
targets are: Reduce energy with 20%, CO2
With 20%, waste with 20% and water with 10%
against 2008. The local goal for Hilton Stockholm
Slussen right now is to reduce electricity and
district heating with 1% and water consumption
with 1% compared to 2010s percentage.
Since 2008 Hilton Stockholm Slussen supports
WWF’s (World Wide Fund for Nature) work
towards a better environment, as an example we
have actively shut down our lights during the
world-wide phenomenon Earth Hour. From 2009
we have gone all the way by also letting our
guests have the possibility to taste ecological food
as well as drinks while listening to unplugged
music in our bar, as the hotel went unplugged!
This has been a great success and will continue
to show what Hilton Stockholm Slussen is actively
doing for the environment.
Our environmental co-ordinator Emil Gammeltoft
has since 1997 been training all team members
of the hotel, which is now over 1000 persons.
Besides this, at least 900 people have been
receiving information about Hilton’s program, by
external educations and presentations, to reach a
more sustainable society. Hilton Stockholm
Slussen’s environmental work is even referred to
in several foreign books.
-
We buy electricity generated from wind and
water power and as of 2010 the electricity is
environmentally certified with “Bra Miljöval”
(Good Environmental Choice). Hilton is the first
hotel chain in the Nordic to purchase this
electricity.
-
We are the first hotel in Sweden to have ecolabelled our Breakfast buffet (28 May 1999) in
accordance with Swedish KRAV eco-labelling
standards.
-
All newly employed personnel receive environmental studies training through the course “ecolearning”, which in many aspects was done with
the help from Hilton Stockholm Slussen’s
environmental work.
-
In September 2001, the hotel was appointed “the
good example” in the hotel and restaurant trade
in Sweden, by Förpackningsinsamlingen (the
producers’ national board for recycling of
packages) and SHR (The Swedish Hotel and
Restaurant Association).
-
In 2011 Hilton Stockholm Slussen received an
award for being the most environmental friendly
Hilton hotel in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
-
As a guest, you have a wide range of
opportunities
to
influence
us
in
our
environmental work by submitting your own
ideas – which we promise to take into
consideration! Some suggestions to you as our
guest: Please turn off the TV and the lights when
leaving the room.
-
Hilton Stockholm Slussen is a Swan Certified
hotel since April 2001. In short this means that
the hotel meet high standards for the
environment, health, function and quality. The
Swan organisation checks that the standards are
met by means of testing, documentation and
visits to the hotel. The hotel was recently
approved again by the Swan and their even
tougher demands.
-
Hilton Stockholm Slussen received our
businesses biggest environmental price in
Sweden the year of 2003; Arlas Golden Cow for
“Best Environmental Work”. The explanation of
the price was: “Attitudes change by those who
dare to widen their eyes and change the habitual
and expected method of working. With a welldocumented, and in many ways first class,
program for long term sustainable ecologic and
economic business, it is shown clearly that by
using ecological products and resourceeconomizing it is profitable. Both environment
and result is every team member’s responsibility
and shows that the concept of quality can mean
a lot more then the obvious”.
-
When bedrooms are renovated, the décor will
successively be replaced (wherever possible)
with recyclable materials.
-
As a guest, you can sort three types of waste at
source, both in your room and/or in the
conference facilities.
-
We have an environmental group made up of
committed individuals from different departments
of the hotel.
-
When we buy new inventories, we invest
exclusively in energy-saving products.
-
We have an Environmental Information Corner in
the lobby.
-
We use a system called LightStay where we
monthly report figures on energy, water and
waste, but also other things as number of
environmental trained team members, costs of
picking up different waste fractions and number
of guests who have stayed in the hotel for the
actual month. This is then measured between
the Hilton hotels to get an idea on how the hotel
is doing compared to the other hotels. Most
importantly: get control over the environmental
work at our hotel and have control over the
resource flow.
-
We use double-sided photocopying and we also
attempt to minimize paper usage by using e-mail
communication to a greater extent, both
internally and externally.
-
Our refrigerators and freezers have been
converted to meet current environmental
requirements.
-
Hilton Stockholm Slussen is a member of the
Swedish Society for the Conservation of Nature
and supports its work.
-
Our hotel received an honourable mention in the
Electrolux Eco Kitchen Prize 1998.
-
Low CO2 levels have been reached (only 26
kg/m2) due to the purchase of “Bra Miljöval”
(Good Environmental Choice) electricity.
Our environmental work is ongoing and is
constantly incorporating new ideas.
-
WATER
ERGONOMIC CARPET
Scandinavia has some of the cleanest water in the
entire world. According to the National Food
Administration, Swedish tap water is of better quality
than bottled still water.
It is therefore with pride and assuredness that we
can recommend you as our guest to enjoy our fresh
and clear water directly from the tap here at Hilton
Stockholm Slussen.
In addition you can save some money while thinking
of the environment.
Our receptionists use ergonomic carpets, made of
old car tires, to reduce the pressure on the feet and
back.
WASTE
The hotel sorts the following 23 types of wastes:
Food waste
Coloured glass
Plain glass
Newspapers/Office stationery
Corrugated cardboard/Cardboard/Tetra pack
Metal packaging
Hard plastics
Batteries
Chemicals
Paint spills
Solvents
Oil spills
Electronics
Fluorescent tubes and light bulbs
Flammable materials (napkins, soft plastics, hygiene
articles)
Deep-frying fat
Wood
Toner cartridges
Shrink and stretch wrap
Coat-hangers
Dry cleaning coat-hangers
Candle stumps
All of the above items are sent for recycling/storage
-
The only thing we send to the refuse dump is
white porcelain as there is, unfortunately, no
means at present of recycling it.
-
All food waste is sent for biogas production
purposes. The residue, which includes plant
nutrients, is sent to farmers in Huddinge (outside
Stockholm) for use on their fields.
-
All waste remaining after sorting at source is
used to generate district heating for apartments
at Södermalm in Stockholm.
-
To ensure team members’ and guests’
involvement in our environmental work, we
measure most of what we recycle and present a
variety of recycling information on the hotel’s
environmental notice boards. Since the start of
1995 up to August 2011, we have recycled 800
345 kg of paper, corresponding to approximately
11 205 saved trees. During August 2011 we sent
back 4.9 tons of food waste, corresponding to
536 litres of fuel for the truck that picked up the
food waste and also recycled 3.3 tons of
flammable material that was used to generate
2
district heating which heated a 53,2m apartment
24 hours a day for the whole month!
-
Worn-out equipment is always handed in for
reuse or recycling.
-
Our rubbish sacks are 100% biodegradable and
are made from polythene and corn starch.
-
All wooden pallets are used to heat a private
house, alternatively going to a splinter.
-
Every hotel department has sorting at source
stations.
-
We return all plastic and wooden crates to our
vegetable supplier for reuse.
-
Our flammable waste is put in a bale press to
reduce volumes as much as possible.
WASHING, CLEANING, CHEMICALS
-
We are trying to swap all of our cleaning/dish
washing/laundry and scouring detergents for
eco-labelled products.
-
No pesticides are used on the hotel premises.
-
Shampoo and shower gel are environmental
certified and provided from dispensers in all
bedrooms and public areas. The packaging is
recycled.
-
We have documented routines for registering
refrigerants. Annual top-ups are maximised to
5%.
-
Our dry-cleaning supplier “Tvätt i Stockholm” is
environmentally certified through ISO 14001 and
ISO 9001. This is also the laundry supplier we
use when you as our guest need to wash clothes
when staying here.
TRANSPORT
-
Our laundry supplier uses no chlorine or optical
whiteners in its laundry process. From March
2006 our new laundry supplier is also Swan
labelled.
-
We impose environmental requirements on our
suppliers and are endeavouring to reduce their
number in order to cut the total number of
transports.
-
We do not use scented chemicals.
-
-
HCFCs and CFCs
refrigeration plant.
We always use cycle couriers for lightweight
transports within Stockholm.
-
There is a cycle stand in front of the hotel. You
as a guest can also lend a bicycle from us!

When we buy articles of consumption, we rather
buy it once a month instead of several times a
month, to also there try to cut the number of
transports.
-
Heat from the ventilation, refrigeration units and
sewage facilities is recycled.
-
Our ventilation units are fitted with timers and
speed controls to save energy.
-
We have door stops/automatic door locks in all
climate-controlled areas.
-
The team members receive monthly follow-up
information on energy consumption.
We have low levels of CO2, 26kg/m at the hotel
due to the fact that our electricity comes from
wind and water. These levels are quite low
compared to others in our industry.
-
Timers are used to regulate saunas.
-
Most of our lighting is on a computer-controlled
timer system.
-
We use low-energy light bulbs and fluorescent
tubes wherever possible. LED – lights are next
step and other energy saving tasks is in pipeline.
-
All lighting in the personnel department is turned
off at night, as are all computers, photocopiers,
etc.
-
Our heating system uses district heating.
-
Now we also have three suppliers that deliver all
goods to us in trucks that use renewable fuel:
Sorundas and Serveras transports run on biogas
and Papyrus transports run on rape methylestics.

Double-sided photocopiers are available.
None of our textiles are treated with brominated
or halogenated fire retardants.
-
All paper products (including toilet paper and
paper towels) are made from recycled fibrebased paper or pure wood fibre pulp.
-
-
All the paper used within the hotel is approved by
the “Bra Miljöval” (Good Environmental Choice)
or Nordic Swan eco-labelling systems.
HOTEL ROOMS
-
You can sort your waste into the following three
categories in your hotel room:
Red box: Hard plastics (e.g. shampoo bottles)
and metal (e.g. bottle caps and tins).
Green box: Organic waste (e.g. apple cores,
etc).
Big box: Paper (e.g. newspapers).
-
We used to use 5 different cleaning agents in the
rooms, but now use only one.
-
Guests staying several nights have the option of
keeping their towels instead of receiving a freshly
laundered one every morning.
-
Under floor heating and towel rails are timerbased.
-
Plexiglas brochure stands have been replaced
by wooden ones in all rooms.
-
Temperature in the guest rooms: individual
thermostats have been installed in all rooms.
-
Eco-labelled soap and shampoo in all rooms.
-
We have FSC labelled parquet floor in 44 of our
guest rooms. FSC: Forest Stewardship Council
which is an independent membership-based
organization.
