Celebrating our 20th Anniversary
Live theatre provides the opportunity to stimulate the mind, tickle the funny bone
and soothe the soul. The Arizona Jewish Theatre Company is dedicated to producing
enlightening and dynamic professional theatre that reflects and illuminates Jewish
culture, history and perspective. We celebrate the resiliency of the human spirit and
the diverse nature of Jewish culture. Through the life-affirming and heightened eye
of theatrical expression, AJTC adds an important ethnic component to the colorful
Arizona landscape. We serve as a source of pride and reaffirmation to the Jewish
community in addition to being a source of education, sensitivity and awareness
to the community at large.
Our 20th Anniversary offerings represent a diverse spectrum of the Jewish world.
Geographically, we move from Russia to New York to Europe to Atlanta.
Historically, we go from the Tsarist period of 1905, to contemporary times, to
WWII and its aftermath, to the times of "Gone with the Wind." Emotionally, we
will touch each of you differently and deeply with song, laughter, stimulating
thought, nostalgia and tears.

AJTC feels fortunate to have entered into
a 3-year facilities agreement with Paradise
Valley Community College to perform at
the Center for the Performing Arts.
PVCC’s $6 million, 25,000 square foot
Center for the Performing Arts opened
October 13, 2005. A fully professional,
multi-use theater, the beautiful facility seats
nearly 300 patrons and incorporates a
25-musician orchestra pit, a full fly system,
comfortable dressing rooms for up to 30
actors, as well as state-of-the-art lighting,
sound and audio/visual systems. The
auditorium has comfortable seats, is
climate controlled and offers 10 infra-red
hearing devices.

The CPA sits on the east end of the
campus, off 34th street, just south of
Union Hills. The facility is easy to reach
Ultimately the biggest beneficiary of
AJTC’s new home will be the Northeast
Valley itself. “The community will benefit
by having access to professional theatre
in their own backyard,” Scinto said.

gallery. Just outside the building is a new
outdoor amphitheatre, which will be used
for a variety of concerts and programs.
The performing arts community at PVCC
is excited about the new arrangement too.
“PVCC students will have a professional
theatre company in residence from whom
they can learn and gain invaluable
experience,” states Dr. Christopher
Scinto, division chair of PVCC’s Fine
and Performing Arts Department.

TRADITION! Nobody can do Fiddler like a Jewish Theatre! We can’t think
of a more appropriate show to kick off our 20th Anniversary Season. At the
turn of the last century, in the little village (shtetl) of Anatevka, Tevye, a
poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his
tight-knit Jewish community. Faced with ever-present threats of pogroms
from Tsarist Russia, changing social mores, and intellectual ideas brought
in from afar, Tevye struggles to hold on to his century-old beliefs.
The combination of humor side-by-side with tragedy is at the very heart of
Jewish existence. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof
has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and
honesty. Its universal themes of family, love and tradition cut across barriers
of race, class, nationality and religion, making the show one of the most
respected icons of the American Musical Theatre.

This heartwarming comedy/drama engages the audience from the very first
scene. The play opens at the New York graveside of Florence Halpern,
where her husband of 50-plus years, Joe, is paying his last respects. His
solitude is interrupted by a stranger bearing flowers -- fellow widower
Dennis Johnson, a long-retired CPA who admits that he had a longtime
"rapport" with Halpern's late wife. Intrigued, Halpern accepts Johnson's
invitation for a picnic in the park and much more than a corned beef
sandwich and pickles are unveiled at their meeting.
Originally seen as an HBO special in 1983 with Sir Laurence Olivier and
Jackie Gleason, the expanded stage version is both poignant and touching.

Pre-war persecution of Jews reached its pinnacle with the pogrom of
November 9 and 10, 1938, known as Kristallnacht (the night of broken
glass), when German and Austrian Nazis burned and destroyed 267
synagogues, killed 100 people, smashed 7500 Jewish stores and
incarcerated nearly 30,000 individuals in concentration camps.
In response to these events the British Jewish Refugee Committee initiated the
unique rescue operation now known as "Kindertransport." With permission
from their government and aid from Quaker and other non-Jewish refugee
organizations, they brought 10,000, mostly Jewish, unaccompanied children
from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland to safety in Great Britain.
Playwright Diane Samuels interviewed a number of the Kinder and wove
their actual experiences into her fictional account of Eva, who, at the age of
9, was sent by her German family to find safe haven in England. This moving
story takes place in England in the late 1970s, and follows Eva's journey –
with heartache and hope.

The Last Night of Ballyhoo

It's December of 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia. Gone with the Wind is having
its world premier, and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta's elitist German
Jewish are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social
event of the season. Meet the Freitag family: bachelor Adolph, his widowed
sister Boo Levy and their widowed sister-in-law Reba. Boo's daughter needs
a date for the dance; Adolph brings home his new employee Joe Farkas;
but is a Brooklyn-born Jew of Eastern European heritage of equal status
to the Freitags?
The family gets pulled apart and then mended together with plenty of comedy,
romance and revelations along the way. Events take several unexpected turns
as the characters face where they come from and who they really are.
