Patrick Hertweck was born in 1972. After his A-levels and
leaving school he cycled round many parts of Europe before spending several years successfully working in the
management of a media company. Then the father of
three sons decided to make his secret passion into his job
and ever since has been freelancing as a writer in Freiburg
im Breisgau.
2
New York, 1870. After being abducted from the orphanage, twelveyear-old Maggie goes into hiding in Five Points, a slum area in Manhattan. On the run from her kidnappers, she finds shelter with a gang
of young thieves. Before long, however, Maggie realises that the slums
are strangely familiar to her. She must have lived here before. While
looking for her past, Maggie stumbles across a dwarf, a master thief and
a mysterious Chinaman. There is only one person who can shed any
light on the matter: Mephistophelean Mose, the legendary and feared
ruler of New York crime.

In our multicultural world, children are bursting with
questions about other religions. For this reason, in co-operation with the award-winning and popular web site religionen-entdecken.de, we have compiled over seventy questions
about the most important things religions have in common
and how they differ, without leaving out such tricky questions
as „Are ‚Holy Wars‘ good wars?“ Jane Baer-Krause, our author,
is one of the editors responsible for the web site, and she wrote
the answers in collaboration with the many religion experts
who contribute to the homepage. The accompanying pictures
were designed by photo artist Jan von Holleben with the help
of children from many different cultures. For only when we
know more about each other is mutual acceptance possible.

Mohammed, the prophet –
his life as it has never been
told before
Lorenz Just was born in 1983, studied Islamic sciences at
the University of Halle-Wittenberg and has been at the
German Literature Institute in Leipzig since 2011. While at
university he spent a longer period of time in Cairo and
at the Orient Institute in Beirut and travelled through Yemen and Syria. He was also recently in Iran for research
purposes. In spring 2014 he was a finalist for the MDR
literature prize.
8
Lorenz Just
Mohammed – for Muslims a fascinating and inspiring person, but for many
others a closed book. Where did he come from? What sort of person was
he? What made him into an example for millions of people?
Lorenz Just, Islamic scholar and promising young writer, takes readers to the Arabian Peninsula, to the area now known as Saudi Arabia. It was in this barren and
remote area that an impoverished orphan boy grew up who was to become the
most important prophet and leader of the Muslims. At the time his message was
revolutionary for he proclaimed that idols should be renounced, that there was
only one God and that there should be peace among people. Lorenz Just depicts
Mohammed against the cultural and historic background of the oriental world in
which he grew up and went about his daily business. The fascination of this man
becomes tangible for everyone reading this book – regardless of their religious
affiliation. It is a biography told in the oriental tradition; it unites the historic aspects of Mohammed with what is poetic about him and shows his relevance for
here and now. This is thus a book against ignorance about Islam, against fear and
mistrust and is an invitation for a very special first encounter with this important
figure in world history.

Help! Maths teacher in troublE
The mysterious boyfriend
Look out, double-dealer!
Stop thief!
It can‘t be happening! The maths teacher of the 4 ½ Friends
races his motorbike over the school playground. He is wearing
motorcycling gear and on his jacket there is a snarling panther.
It looks like he is being pursued. There is nothing for it, the
4 ½ Friends must help their teacher. And so they tumble into
a new case …
Friedhelm loves curried sausage. He could eat some
every day. If it weren‘t for Lukas, his mother‘s new boyfriend.
All this guy goes for is organic food. And so when he appeared
on the scene, curried sausage went by the wayside. Friedhelm
is desperate – until he finds out that Lukas‘s name is not Lukas
at all. The 4 ½ Friends leave no stone unturned to get behind
his secret.
It can‘t be true! Radish‘s grandpa is broke. He has been taken in by a double-dealer. Luckily, the 4 ¼ Friends have a
good idea: they set a decoy for the fraudster. But the decoy
makes a fatal mistake …
Watch out, there‘s a thief up to mischief! Some valuable
pieces of art have been stolen from a gallery – including an
edible sculpture made of salami. Daisy, the 4 ½ Friends‘ greedy
dog, picks up the scent, for there is nothing she likes more than
salami …
Joachim Friedrich‘s (*1953) very successful books for

Bianka Minte-König was born in Berlin and since 1980 has been a professor of Media, Literature

children and young adults for many years.
Patricia Schröder, who was born in 1960, lives with

for young girls, so a few years ago she quit her
first job and is now one of the most successful and
popular writers of books for children and teenagers
in Germany.
Hortense Ullrich studied Design in Wiesbaden and

various magazines until she began writing screenplays. She has been writing screenplays and scripts

Luna and her best friend Pia‘s to-do list there comes „growing vegetables tasting of chocolate“. And then they have
to find a new job for Pia‘s mother and en passant make
sure that Luna‘s little brother doesn‘t blow everything up

Mia’s biggest wish is to have a little dog. And
she has already found 1000 super-convincing
arguments why she simply has to have a four-legged friend. She actually even manages to get her
parents on her side, and as a result she is given a
Golden Retriever puppy for her birthday. But the
puppy can’t be collected immediately, and so Mia
and her parents get all the information they can
because before Lino’s arrival there is a great deal
dog owners need to know and rules to follow.
This way, readers find out a lot about dogs, not
least with the help of Mia’s 8-point plan mingled
in the story.
Emma and her little sister Mathilda have
moved. As consolation, their mother promises them a pet – and they quickly decide on
a cat. When three kittens are born in the neighbourhood, the two girls make up their minds
that one of the babies is to be the new member of
their family. The name of the kitten they choose
is to be Emilio. And no sooner has he moved in
than he turns everything topsy-turvy. The little
fellow even has the fire-brigade called out! And
when he has a stint as a „therapy cat“ in the retirement home, he is the hero of the day.

The Lilith Parker Series:
Everything could be so wonderful, thinks Elli,
if it weren‘t for the stinking silly reality in
which her best friend Hannah has suddenly
started hanging around with the new girl in
the class. The fact that she no longer plays first
fiddle in the playground is bad enough. But that
she is the only one not to have been invited to the
coolest birthday party of the year is something Elli
is not going to take sitting down. She hatches out
the perfect plan – but then Elli‘s annoying little
sister, Mrs Runmskötter‘s great big clumsy terriers
and that swot Annemie (who turns out to be not
as uncool as she‘d thought) all start interfering …
And in the end everything turns out much better
than Elli ever thought it would!
The atmosphere on the island of Bonesdale
is tense. Since by now the humans have also become aware of Lilith Parker and her nocturnal folk,
the Nocturi are flocking to the island from all parts
of the world in search of protection there. Lilith
and Rebekka have got their hands full to keep
order. But it seems to be only a matter of time
before they are discovered – be it by the humans, the demon hunters or the vampires. To top
it all, Lilith is extremely worried about the state

The Best Friends Forever Series:
The last exam is over – that‘s that as far as
school is concerned. What now? Anni, Marlene, Clara and Lotte have always been inseparable.
But now they are going their separate ways, without their best friends, scattering to the four winds
– from Berlin to Malaysia. In spite of everything,
however, they are going to keep in touch via their
blog. What they will all experience in this year
ahead of them, be it on aid projects, at university
or on a farm in the Netherlands, who they will love
and what they will find out about themselves – all
this is written in the stars. Only one thing is for
sure: in exactly one year they are going to meet up
again - at Lotte‘s, in the garden.
That really is the end: Luca‘s father and Vanessa‘s mother have ganged up against their
girls. As if it weren‘t bad enough that they forced
the two of them to live under one roof. But one
thing is a no-go: they are not going to become
sisters! And there is one other thing Luca and Vanessa agree about: their parents‘ wedding must
be prevented! They make one plan after the other
– they stir the mother‘s jealousy, emphasise the
father‘s flaws and keep putting spokes into their
wedding plans. But in the end they cannot stop

When Mr Squirrel wakes up one morning he can hardly
believe his eyes: an unknown and mysterious creature has
appeared right under his tree – a creature that can only be the
legendary King of the Woods. The question is, will this creature be able to pass his wisdom on to Mr Squirrel and the other
animals and show them the way to a better life, as the legend
says? And low and behold, the King of the Woods does indeed
tell the animals his one and only and most important rule of
life. But this soon turns out to be anything but kingly.

When the little donkey wakes up one
morning, his Mummy has disappeared!
Luckily the little donkey is not alone for very
long, for a little angel knows where she is –
with the baby Jesus in the stable where the
miracle of Christmas has taken place. The little
donkey and the little angel set off together for
the stable and invite everyone they meet to go
along with them: the children, the shepherd
and his flock of sheep, the baker and his family, the woman from the hot-dog kiosk and
the police constable. A tale full of the mood of
Christmas narrated by that master of storytelling, Otfried Preußler. Christiane Hansen has
newly illustrated the tale with pictures that
are cheerful and warm-hearted.
Mr Lotti is a postman down to the very
bottom of his heart. One day he finds a parcel on the pavement. Something is scratching
and snarling inside. This is a clear-cut case – it
must be alive! The parcel does not have an address on it and so Mr Lotti takes it home with
him. Mr Lotti would obviously never dream
of opening a parcel not meant for him, but he
does push all sorts of goodies to eat through
the air holes for the unknown creature. Each
day, the animal in the parcel grows a little larger – until one day the parcel bursts open. And
what is in it? – A real live tiger!

At last it is holiday time for Professor
Knacks. He sets off in his latest invention,
the TurboTrabbiNaviMobile – and can‘t believe his eyes: no matter where he goes or where
he is – on the water, on land or in the air, in
the North, in the South, in the jungle or at the
South Pole – there is always something not
right. There are icicles in the desert, the penguins are wearing tail coats and bow ties, and
since when have you been able to open the
window in a plane? More than 250 errors are
waiting to be discovered in the look-and-find
pictures. The search can be tricky and leads to
no end of fun!
A fascinating journey to the Netherlands, England, Italy, Austria, France,
Spain and Germany: the Look-and-find
family travels through seven countries and
find sall sorts of sights and attributes that are
typical of each country. Off they go – from the
Piazza San Marco in Venice to Schönbrunn
Palace in Vienna, from the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the grachten in Amsterdam and then on
to traffic on the left round Piccadilly Circus in
the middle of London. They also take a look at
Rothenburg and see one of the most unusual
churches in the world in Barcelona.

l Brilliantly retold by Sybil Gräfin Schönfeldt

l Impressively illustrated by Marina Marinelli
The best-known cock and bull stories
in the world
Somewhere over
the rainbow ≥≥≥
Be honest – does anyone not know the story
of Munchausen‘s ride on the flying cannonball? Or his legendary excursion to the moon?
And so it is all the more surprising that there have
hardly ever been any versions of his stories told
especially for children. Sybil Gräfin Schönfeldt has
retold the lying baron‘s legendary escapades, and
the tales are exciting and easy for children to understand. The magnificent and imaginative illustrations show that picture book artist Lev Kaplan
particularly enjoyed this task. There are little lies
and symbols hidden away everywhere. This is a
true treat for the eyes of young and old.
What a terrible thing to happen: a
cyclone has blown poor little Dorothy
and her dog Toto far, far away to an
unknown country. Before long they are
joined by the scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion. They set off
together to look for the Wizard of Oz, for
only he can help them get to where they
wish to go …
