PLENTY TO KEEP YOU ENTERTAINED IN 2015
A Happy New Year to everyone.
Blackheath Halls has a great tradition for
bringing you some of the best names on
the comedy circuit. Following in that
tradition, we are delighted to announce
the launch of Laughing Boy Comedy Club,
a monthly Thursday night show in the
Recital Room. Alongside new and
emerging comedy talents, the Comedy
Club will feature some of the top
comedians trying out new material. Also
on 10 April making their first appearance
at the Halls will be two of comedy’s rising
young stand up stars – Romesh
Ranganathan and Suzi Ruffell – with
their hotly anticipated new shows.
For lovers of folk music we welcome
back both the award-winning Scottish
singer, Emily Smith, and the great Irish
band, Altan, and an all-day Folk Funday
on Sunday 17 May, with workshops,
story-telling, concerts and a family ceilidh.
On 30 May The Manfreds, with their
original frontman, Paul Jones, will be
performing many of the greatest hits of
the 1960s group Manfred Mann, along
with jazz and blues songs from some of
their best known albums.
Our Saturday Children’s Theatre series
brings to the stage more wonderfully
enchanting stories, both old and new,
including Little Bo Peep, Rumpelstiltskin,
and A Real Mermaid’s Tale.
Join us for one of our Sunday morning
recitals featuring an excellent mix of
artists and musical repertoire, including
the ever-popular Wihan Quartet, marking
their 30th anniversary.
We are delighted to welcome the Choir
of Clare College, Cambridge to the Halls
on 14 March in a special Passiontide
concert, including the wonderfully
evocative Seven Last Words on the Cross
by James MacMillan. This is a rare
opportunity to see and hear one of the
leading choral groups in the world.
The Jette Parker Young Artists will
present three further Wednesday evening
recitals at the Halls, the first on 21 January.
The students of Trinity Laban will once
again be providing a diverse range of
performances and events from classical to
jazz and musical theatre.
As ever, Blackheath Halls’ community
engagement programme provides lots of
opportunities to get involved, have fun,
and learn new skills. Between January and
March you can come and join our popular
Blackheath Does Broadway course, or
Meantime Jazz if jazz is your thing.
Blackheath Halls Orchestra has space for
string and French horn players and this
term has the privilege of playing
alongside internationally renowned
soloists Raphael and Elizabeth Wallfisch.
Following the success of our previous
children’s operas, the Halls will be
presenting a production of Brundibar by
the Czech composer Hans Krasa.
Two dates to put in your diary now are
the annual Quiz Evening on 30 January
and the Opera Gala Night on 8 March,
both now firmly part of Blackheath’s
social calendar, raising very important
funds to support the work of the Halls.
There’s plenty for everyone so do come
and join us.

The Sacconi Quartet, having
given the UK premiere of Sibelius’
Moderato and Allegro appassionato

programme spanning works from
either end of Sibelius’ compositional
spectrum framing one of Nielsen’s
most popular chamber music works,
his first String Quartet in G minor.

Amy Harman studied at the Royal College of Music and
on graduating she became principal of the BBC National
Orchestra of Wales and has appeared as guest principal with
the London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Academy of
St Martin in the Fields and Scottish Chamber Orchestras. In
2011 Amy became principal of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Accompanying Amy is Tom Poster, internationally known
as a pianist of outstanding artistry and versatility. Equally in
demand as a soloist and chamber musician he has appeared
in both capacities at the BBC Proms in 2008, 2009 and 2011.

Award-winning New Zealand violinist Benjamin Baker over
the past year has made his debut with the Philharmonia
Orchestra and performed with the Haydn Chamber
Orchestra conducted by Nicholas Collon.
He has given recitals at the Wigmore Hall, Newbury and
Northern Chords Festivals; and appeared as soloist with the
Royal New Zealand Ballet Company.
For this Blackheath Sunday series recital he is accompanied
by consummate pianist, Robert Thompson who as a
chamber musician regularly collaborates with a number
of instrumentalists and has appeared at the Wigmore Hall,
Bridgewater Hall, the Leeds and Nottingham International
Piano Series, and The Sage, Gateshead.

Terry Vaughan has developed
his art in clay, painting, collage
and the making of boxes. He
has had solo and mixed
exhibitions and been involved
in the exhibition on The Body
at the V&A Museum and
artwork for shop window
displays amongst other things.
Valerie Vaughan was a
teacher by profession in
Lewisham and during the 80s
she went to the Royal College
of Art and did a degree in Art
Education. Valerie has
constantly practised her art in a variety of materials such as
paint, clay and stained glass and has had a variety of
exhibitions. She was also chair of the Blackheath Art Society
for several years.

The London Democratic Orchestra
invites you to answer the question:
what is the future for the orchestra?
This project involves musicians,
dancers and a choreographer working
together with and without a conductor,
from music and memory. As a
culmination of his week in residence
Michael Klien will also introduce his
Excavation Project, which sees him
working with a large group of dance
and music students.
Artists, students, academics and
celebrities will also participate in a live
streamed ‘After Hours’ debate
about the meaning of creativity

very reluctant King John, Magna Carta

families as they make their way
through the 20th century.

the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass
political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall,
the Cuban Missile Crisis, Presidential impeachment,
revolution – and rock and roll.

world we thought we knew but now will never seem

The 1960s group Manfred Mann is
now considered, more than ever, one
of the finest and most respected bands
from that era. Their numerous pop
hits were R&B based with an
undercurrent of jazz – a very unusual
but winning combination of playing
style and substance.
As a result, their records have a
timeless quality and, some 55 years
on, The Manfreds, with original front
man Paul Jones, will be performing
many of their hits, along with a mix
of Jazz and Blues songs, from some of
their best-known albums.

community of every age in

our famous Great Hall.
Over the past year we have
produced two community
operas, Britten’s The Little
Sweep and Rossini’s The
Adventures of Count Ory, giving
over 300 local people aged
between 8 and 80 the chance to
perform alongside professionals
and be led by a professional
opera team in productions of
high artistic worth.
During the year we have also
run projects giving over 400
singers of all abilities and levels
of experience the opportunity

South East London and beyond
to ‘Blackheath Concert Halls’
for professional performances

Having served as a government
building after the Second World
War, Blackheath Halls faced an
uncertain future until it was
saved as a concert hall by the
local community.
Since we reopened in 1985,
Blackheath Halls has been at
the centre of cultural life in
Blackheath and we continue
to offer people from all over
South East London and beyond
an exciting professional
performance programme
featuring a wide variety of

in the London Boroughs of
Lewisham and Greenwich.

the south end of the village, Blackheath Halls is
next to the mini-roundabout serving Lee Road,
