DREAMS DO COME TRUE!

I can remember when I dreamed of having a job close to home. I
was professionally invested in a 30-year career, but at a point in
my life where I longed to spend less time on the road and more
time at home and with my family. Seven years ago, I answered
an ad in the Mashpee Enterprise for the Mashpee Chamber of
Commerce’s Executive Director position. Not only did my dream
come true when I got the job, but now I get to work with
businesses, visitors, residents, and community leaders to fulfill
their dreams too.
I feel fortunate to have a job that is just as satisfying and
rewarding as it is fun. I meet the most amazing people. And collectively we are proud
of our community and the work we do together to make Mashpee a great place to visit,
live and do business.
Mashpee’s rich history, natural beauty, premier golf courses, unique shopping and
diverse restaurants make Mashpee a vacationer’s dream destination and the perfect
place to buy a home or open a new business.
The Mashpee Chamber has special events planned for every season, including a
spectacular Christmas parade of lights you won’t want to miss on Saturday, December
10th. Turn to page 42 for a full list of events. Meanwhile, to make planning your trip to
Mashpee a little easier, we have our business listings on page 76.
Designed to guide, inform and entertain readers, Mashpee Magazine is a handy
resource for planning your visit, your move or your new business opportunity. We also
invite everyone to visit our office located at 5 North Market Street in the Mashpee
Commons for more information or personal assistance. My assistant Katy Acheson and I
will be happy to help you. You can also visit www.mashpeechamber.com for more
information and connect with us on social media.
Special thanks to our board of directors and our president, Patrice Pimental-Cotta, my
assistant Katy Acheson and Becki Granger, who works in our office. I would also like to
thank Town Manger Rodney Collins, the Board of Selectmen, Mashpee town officials,
the Wampanoag Tribe, Thomas J. O’Neill, the Mashpee Enterprise, Mashpee TV, Kevin
Ham, Paul Rifkin, Dan Cutrona, Gene Marchand, John Gamache, Lucy Nelson, Jack
Lynch, Carol McLeod Design, Rachel Arroyo, the management team at Mashpee
Commons and Cummings Printing for supporting the magazine and the Mashpee
Chamber. I also thank my husband Gary, our members, volunteers and sponsors for
their continued support.

A COMMUNITY THAT WORKS
& DREAMS TOGETHER
A Community of Strength, Success & Service
is part of the American Dream. We need to support that dream. These are the
business owners who sponsor our local events and come together when the
community is in need,” said Palumbo.
Mashpee – because of its beauty, rich history, thriving commercial sector and many
recreational opportunities – has earned its reputation as a dream destination in
which to live and build a business. But on top of our natural and cultural blessings,
it’s the people who live and work here that make Mashpee exceptional. A virtuous
circle of working together and supporting one another – especially during
challenging times – fortifies the community.
Selectman Carol Sherman agrees. “I have seen firsthand what this community does
for a person in need or for a family in distress. We all come together donating
food, money, clothing or whatever is needed,” she said. “I wouldn’t want to live
anywhere else. Mashpee has a big heart and we’re a big family of kind people.”
Earlier this year, the Mashpee community rallied support to help the Moretti
Family. Cristina Moretti, 47, and mother of three sons, died in a car crash while
driving home from her waitressing job at Bobby Byrne’s Restaurant and Pub. The
community responded by creating a fundraising page on the GoFundMe website.
Two days after the tragic accident, people had donated approximately $23,000 to
help pay for Moretti’s funeral service. “That’s the way the community is,” said
Patricia Peters, who is the general manager at Bobby Byrne’s. Peters shared that
Bobby Byrne’s, the Lanes Bowl & Bistro, Dino’s and the 99 Restaurant also
contributed food to the family before and after the funeral. “We have our share of
tragedies and feel like extended family in a time of need,” she said.
“One of Mashpee’s greatest assets is that it has never lost that small community
spirit even though it has grown so much,” said John Cahalane, who has been a
selectman in town for seventeen years; he is also the recipient of the Mashpee
Chamber’s 2016 Distinguished Service Award. “It’s amazing,” he said. “The
people in Mashpee really know how to take care of each other.”
Town leaders, the business community, the Wampanoag Tribe, non-profit
organizations, residents and many unsung heroes work passionately behind the
scenes to make the Mashpee dream a reality. “People in Mashpee are warm,
caring and sensitive to the needs of others. Businesses embrace their unique
ability to help the community. Residents respond by supporting local businesses.
It’s surreal. Once you get a chance to work, visit, or live here, you realize it’s the
Mashpee people who define the town’s success,” said Mary Lou Palumbo,
Executive Director of the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce.
“It’s the locals,” Mark Lawrence, owner of Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlour in
Mashpee agrees. “I had a business in another location and closed it after four
years. People in Mashpee line up outside my store on a snowy December day to
purchase my ice cream pies. Everyone is amazing!”
The Mashpee business community understands the value of paying it forward.
Through the support of the community, they’ve become successful, putting them
in a position to give back. They donate their money, time and expertise as often as
they can. “Mashpee is a tremendously supportive business environment,” said
Thomas J. O’Neill owner of Thomas J. O’Neill Inc., and 2014 recipient of the
Mashpee Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year Award. “In return, it has
been a great pleasure to assist others in any way I am able; it completes me.”
“That’s why it’s important to shop local,” said Palumbo. “Owning a small business

TOGETHER
In December, 2014, the Manning family’s home on Shipwreck Drive was gutted by
fire. They lost everything. Kevin, Maura and their daughter Stephanie, who work
and are well known in Mashpee, received an outpouring of support from area
residents and local businesses. “We were thankful everyone was safe,” said Kevin
Manning, “but then your mind starts racing: Where will we live? What do we wear
to work? Where will we sleep tonight? Incredibly, within just a few hours, the
people in Mashpee were answering all those questions for us. What could have
been a life crushing event became an uplifting life experience. We are so thankful
to the community.”
Constantinos (Dino) Mitrokostas, owner of Dino’s Sports Bar and Restaurant,
immediately offered his space for a fundraising event after the fire destroyed the
Mannings’ family home. “Whenever there is a need for a fundraiser, Dino’s makes
his restaurant available,” said selectman Sherman. There are numerous fundraisers
at Dino’s throughout the year to support many non-profit and local residents in
need. “I’m happy to do it,” said Dino, who is also a past recipient of Citizen of the
Year Award, and generous supporter of the town’s events and fundraisers. “He
never says no,” Sherman added.
“We have always been proud of Mashpee, it’s not a new concept in our world,”
said Trish Keli’inui, PR and Communications Manager for the Wampanoag Tribe.
“We literally are part of the land, air and water here. Our ancestors are quite
literally in the soil. We
have an attachment to
this place like no other.
It’s what keeps us
connected to all that
came before us.”
Unwavering respect for
Mashpee’s heritage,
present day community
and potential fortify the
town’s continued
vibrancy. It’s the
foundation of dreams –
the kind that come true.

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg and demonstrate the values that
make Mashpee special. Not surprisingly, these present-day values are anchored in
the past. By never losing sight of their deep-rooted history, respect for the land
and its people, the Wampanoag Tribe paved the way for commerce and future
generations of Mashpee businesses, residents and visitors.

A Dream Vacation Giveaway Makes Mashpee
A Dream Vacation Destination
Bill wanted to know “what’s the catch?” That was his first reaction when he was told
that he had won a dream vacation on Cape Cod. WeNeedaVacation.com had drawn
Bill’s name randomly from a pool of 89,384 entries submitted by 25,888 individuals
for the Dream Vacation Giveaway for a week at a Mashpee waterfront home.
The drawing came after many months of planning and promotion. Late last summer
2015, the team at WeNeedaVacation.com asked themselves, “What will excite
people about the Cape and Islands?” According to Tyler, the giveaway project
leader at WeNeedaVacation.com, this is when the Dream Vacation Giveaway idea
was born. “We thought about how many people describe the Cape and Islands as
their ‘happy place’ and dream of getting back there.
The people at WeNeedAVacation.com have been vacation home rental experts for
the Cape and Islands for almost 20 years. “When we started to look for a home, we
knew we had to ‘wow’ vacationers. It had to be a place where they could picture
themselves and where they would want to bring their whole family,” says Becky.

They found the house of everyone’s
dreams right here in Mashpee. With two
beautiful decks overlooking the ocean,
this Mashpee home is a dream for sure.
Even better, the homeowners were
excited to partake in making this Dream
Vacation Giveaway a reality. Their home
got so much social media attention that
they were getting multiple requests a
day from vacationers who didn’t want to
wait for the Giveaway winner – they just
wanted to book the home outright.

MASHPEE SUCCESS
HOPE, DREAMS & AMBITION
BY BECKI GRAINGER
I have been working at the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce since June 2014, a
couple weeks after the Annual Dinner. I originally got involved in March of that
year, when I was asked to write an article for the Mashpee Magazine. In 2014, the
theme for the Magazine was ‘Making Headlines’ and I wrote about LIFE, Inc.; what
it is, how it supports residents with special needs, and how LIFE, Inc. and its
residents get involved with the community. The article highlighted what the
organization and their residents do.
When I first began to write the article two years ago, I had absolutely no idea what
was in store for me. It was certainly a surprise when I was asked to come to the
Annual Dinner. I didn’t know anyone and was accompanied by Corinne Wickel,
who is not only involved with the Mashpee Chamber events but is also a former
staff member at LIFE, Inc. as well.
I met Mary Lou Palumbo – the executive director for the Mashpee Chamber – that
night and somewhere along the way, I was asked to join the Chamber staff as a
volunteer. I was officially hired in January 2016, which made me anxious and really
happy at the same time.
My first major project as a volunteer was working on the Pirate Palooza website. At
first, my focus was on the website and my work also included some social media,
particularly Facebook. As time went on, I began to focus more on writing,
especially after writing the two articles for last year’s Mashpee Magazine. Katy and
Mary Lou could already see what a skilled writer I am. It was only a couple weeks
after the 2015 Annual Dinner when Katy came up with the idea for me doing blog
entries for the website.
Right now, there are about two dozen posted entries, which begins in July and
goes through recent weeks. My latest focus during the slow winter months is
Spotlight On… for the Mashpee Chamber members. I am hoping this will help
people – from residents to seasonal visitors – become more aware of what these
businesses and organizations are, and what they do for the community. The
Mashpee Chamber of Commerce is about supporting local businesses while
bringing the community together.
Working at the Chamber of Commerce has been a rewarding experience for me,
since it has gotten me back into writing and has helped me express myself better
in other areas. I’ve really enjoyed working on the blog for Katy and Mary Lou,
informing residents and visitors of Mashpee about what is going on around town.
It has also inspired me to start a personal blog of my own.

LIFE DREAMS
When you live in Mashpee and you are a LIFE, Inc. resident,
your dreams are bound to come true. LIFE, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that supports adults with developmental
disabilities. There are two campuses, one in Mashpee and
another in Hyannis.
Residents of LIFE at Mashpee come from all over the United
States and each of them brings something unique with
Amanda Church
them. LIFE, Inc. prides itself on being part of Mashpee,
with quite a few residents working at Mashpee businesses.
Most of these residents have been a part of LIFE, Inc. and some have had their job
for a short time while others have been working at the same job for years.

BY BECKI GRAINGER
Visit us at our new
location for the finest
One of these residents, Amanda Church, is a former volunteer at the Mashpee
Chamber of Commerce. She now works as a receptionist at the LIFE Mashpee
campus. Last year at the LIFE Employment Appreciation Dinner, Amanda was asked
to come on board and work for LIFE. She now answers the phone at the desk on
select days.
Sandra Waite, an employment counselor at LIFE, also had a few words. “We often
hear from employers at LIFE that our folks are better than the average employee
because their work ethic is so good. LIFE residents are indeed hard-working
individuals, who show up for work early and are willing to do anything to get the
job done. They are very friendly and customers like to be waited on by them.”
The benefits LIFE residents have are the relationships that occur in the work
community, the pride of having a job, and the feeling of accomplishment with each
and every compliment or promotions. LIFE, Inc. believes successful employment
provides a sense of purpose and productivity for the resident, which contributes to
their well-being.
PHOTO: BECKI GRAINGER
Jon Derr, another LIFE resident, was asked by his job coach
what his dream job was; his reply was to work at a golf
course. Jon has had an interest in golf since he was a child,
when he would watch his grandfather play the game. Jon
continues to play golf even today with Special Olympics. His
job coach suggested he work at New Seabury; Jon applied
and got the job.
Jon Derr
Jon is just one example of how dreams come true, and he
isn’t the only one who has their dream job already. Other residents work, but have
aspirations beyond their job. My dream job is to work for a newspaper or magazine.
I’ve loved to write ever since I was little, and I have come a long way since then. I
definitely enjoy what I do now at the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce; it’s one
step closer to my dreams coming true.

ACHIEVEMENTS
BY RODNEY C. COLLINS, TOWN MANAGER
– Benjamin Franklin
”
I would like to thank Executive Director Mary Lou Palumbo and the Mashpee
Chamber of Commerce in affording me an opportunity to deliver a message from the
Office of the Town Manager. For the Town of Mashpee, and for town employees
and volunteers in particular, 2015 will be remembered as a year of change. Former
Town Manager, Joyce Mason, retired after a successful career that spanned nearly
34 years. After 10 ½ years as police chief, I am honored and privileged to have been
chosen as her successor. The Board of Selectmen bade farewell to longtime
Selectman Wayne Taylor, as well as Selectman Mike Richardson.
Left to right: Thomas Rullo, Fire Chief; Catherine Laurent, Director of
Public Works; Rodney Collins, Town Manager; and Scott Carline,
Police Chief.
The town also recently
said goodbye to Assistant
Town Manager Tom Mayo,
who accepted a similar
job in Hingham. The
town experienced sadness
and grief from the loss of
longtime Administrative
Assistant Carol A. Deneen.
In order for her memory to
endure, an annual award
in Carol’s name for the
town employee that has
distinguished himself/
herself through
exemplary performance
has been established.
This past year, among other notable achievements, the town was presented with
the first-ever Aquaculture Stewardship Award by the Massachusetts Aquaculture
Association, in recognition of Mashpee’s outstanding support of commercial
aquaculture.
Work on the Mashpee Community Park will be completed in 2016, and its focal
point, the new bandstand, is where local musicians performed and friends and families
gathered as part of our summer concert series. The park also includes walking
paths, as well as a large parking area where the town first introduced “Food Truck
Fridays,” a great way to grab lunch on the go during the busy summer months.
The new park integrates seamlessly with the One Room Schoolhouse, Archives
building, and our beautiful Veterans’ Garden. Right up the road, the Mashpee

Dog Park officially opened on July 15th, providing owners of puppies, adult dogs,
and older dogs with the ideal spot for pets to exercise and socialize.
In planning and construction news, work began this year on the Great River boat
ramp and parking lot improvement project. Additional funds are being requested
at the May 2016 Town Meeting to expand the project in order to provide a
double-wide ramp. Additionally, plans are being formed to improve the ramps and
docks at Ockway and Mashpee Neck. The town has also executed a Host
Community Agreement with Medical Marijuana of Massachusetts and
construction should began in 2016.

FROM THE TOWN MANAGER
ACHIEVEMENTS
In November, the town facilitated the transfer of two town-owned properties for
Habitat for Humanity for affordable housing purposes. Later that month, the Board
of Selectmen approved the Affordable Housing Planned Production Plan, which
was subsequently accepted by the State. The Affordable Housing Feasibility
Assessment on 950 Falmouth Road was prepared by the Horsley Witten Group in
January 2016 and subsequently reviewed by the Selectmen.
The Cape Cod Commission provided the Mashpee “Reset” Report that included a
project area analysis for the Mashpee Executive Park, John’s Pond area, Route 130
area, Route 28 area and recommended redevelopment options. Additionally, the
feasibility of a hotel and infrastructure funding is included within the report. The
Mashpee Economic Development Industrial Corporation continues to explore
viable options to attract businesses to Mashpee.
I also would like to congratulate the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe for its land going
into trust. The town and the Tribe resolved a Memorandum of Understanding in
concert with our Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA), and I look forward to working
together to address our mutual concerns and interests.
I am further pleased to report that the Town of Mashpee maintained its Triple AAA
bond rating this year. I want to extend my appreciation to our finance team in
maintaining a prudent fiscal approach to our financial affairs.
PHOTO: LUCY NELSON
On a personal note, I would like to thank Mary Lou Palumbo and the Chamber for
“stepping up” and providing solutions in keeping the holiday lights on at the rotary.
Chris Ball, Jim Vacarro, Kenny Marsters and the Mashpee Pops Committee have
been instrumental in keeping this holiday tradition and spirit alive. Through a joint
effort, we were able to address legitimate questions concerning funding issues,
storage and staffing.
Finally, whether you live here, work here, play here, shop here, or simply visit family or
friends, please enjoy all that Mashpee has to offer! Our town has beaches, boating,
walking trails, golfing and
much more by way of
recreational activities.
Our town has the finest

shops found on Cape
Cod! Our Native American
culture is rich with history.
Whether you desire to

or you are a frequent

that our Reservation Proclamation was approved. That is the day that marked
our Lands in Mashpee and Taunton were indeed “Sovereign.”

While we celebrated our Land In Trust in September, the Reservation
Proclamation was the final step to the process…Raising our flag that day held
tremendous and monumental significance to our Tribal Nation.
This Land is our Mother. As is always the case with Creation and Creator’s plan;
our Mother came first before us. Our Mother was created after the stars and
Grandmother Moon had been set in the heavens and the Waters shaped the
curves of our Mother’s body. She was created to provide all we need to live and
serve one another. The first People were taken from her Sacred body and the
Waters that helped to give her shape. Hence the People were named Wôpanâak,
First People. Thus, naturally, we are our Mother as with all living beings. All that is
asked of us regarding our Mother is that in exchange for the life that she gives and
sustains, is that we create a society and governance that cares for her; That we
take from our Mother as necessary and do so in a respectful and loving way. For
many thousands of years we have lived up to those responsibilities and remained
here in her Love and care. We have Loved her too, lived in Peace with her, thanked
and honored her. We have remained steadfast by our Earth Mother’s side and
defended her to the best of our ability. For thousands upon thousands of
generations the Mashpee Wampanoag have said, we Love our Mother, our Land.
For thousands of generations we have said, ‘here it is that Wôpanâak were created
and here it is that we will remain, by our Mother’s side. For thousands of
generations our government has maintained an edict of ensuring our grandchildren are not taken away from their Earth Mother. In recognition of this good
road we have collectively traveled, I say this to you my family;

MASHPEE HISTORY
HISTORY OF THE MASHPEE
approximately 11,000 years.
WAMPANOAG
”
BY RAMONA PETERS
Welcome to Mashpee, the home of our tribe for approximately 11,000 years.
Many a storm and visitor has swept through our woods and found comfort on
our beaches both fresh and salt. Our first visitors from across the Atlantic were
the Vikings during the year 1004. They anchored in Waquoit Bay and stayed for
quite a while longer than most folks use their time-share abodes. We’ve seen
many come and go like Verrazano, Cabot, Zunis, Lenape, and other explorers. We
have a history of hospitality one might say. Our culture directs us to be kind,
friendly, and hospitable which allowed the early English settlers to prosper.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum is located at 414 Main Street (Route
130) and is open to the public 10:00am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Come
view our exhibits revealing the unique history and culture of the Mashpee
Wampanoag Tribe, including a full size wetu (traditional lodge) with furnishings,
Traditional Leaders exhibit 1926 to present, and expo on the Mashpee Indian
Whalers of the 19th century. To schedule special educational programs and group
tours, call (508) 477-9339. The building is accessible. Like us on Facebook.
The Mashpee Wampanoag are one of the original sixty-nine tribes in the
Wampanoag Nation. The Marshpee (later called Mashpee) tribe was under the
oversight of English missionaries for nearly 200 years. The reservation period in
Mashpee officially began in 1677 and restricted our freedom until 1868. From that
time up until around 1975, the tribe ran the town government of Mashpee. We
became overwhelmed with new residents that very quickly took control of the
direction of the town with an easy five-to-one vote. Today the Native American
population in Mashpee is less than 10%.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has both traditional and conventional leadership
for our people. The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is a federally recognized tribe
(2007), allowing it to actively participate in federal programs designed for Indian
Nations. We maintain a government-to-government relationship with all federal
agencies to support the health, education, and welfare needs of the tribe. Our
traditional leadership includes the Chief and his Circle of advisors, Medicine Man,
and Clan Mothers. The Chief and Medicine Man have permanent seats at the
Tribal Council table to ensure cultural concerns are included in decision-making.
Tribal members seek advice, ceremony, and social justice from these leaders.

WHERE DREAMS COME TRUE

Economically, the tribe has adapted and managed in a number of different ways
besides hunting, fishing, and planting. During the 17th and 18th centuries, we
were involved in the fur, rope, timber, and sassafras trade. In the 19th and early
20th centuries Mashpee Wampanoag men were engaged in the whaling industry,
sailing the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic and Indian Oceans. Those mariners were usually
out to sea for at least a year at a time hunting whales. The fishing is still great here
in Mashpee. Our rivers, the Mashpee, Santuit, and Quashnet, have been loaded
with herring during the spring months. Smoked herring were exported to Europe
from Mashpee during the 20th century. The cranberry industry and a broom
factory in Mashpee also once provided local employment. Today most Mashpee
Natives are employed in the building and health care industries or working for
the tribe in a variety of professions. Subsistence farming, fishing, and hunting
are still practiced by tribal members. We’ll see you down the bay; try hard not to
leave a footprint.

“I really feel like I’m part of this town,” said Olson.
Olson is proud of his local business, and customer
service is a priority.
“I treat my customers like I want to be treated,” he
said. Olson said he learned a lot when he was
building his career in the Connecticut area.
“I was in management training. It was an eyeopener,” Olson said.
In fact, one of his first jobs in the Connecticut stores
left a lasting impression. According to Olson, some
of the independent installers didn’t show up for work
and he realized they controlled the business.
“As a result, hiring quality installers became a priority
for me,” Olson said. “I quickly realized that the
installation is just as important and making the sale
and the customer service we provide in the store.”
Gene continues to be a dedicated member of the
Mashpee Chamber of Commerce by attending and
supporting many chamber events. In 2015, to
commemorate his 5th anniversary in business B & L
Floor Covering proudly sponsored the Mashpee
Chamber’s Christmas Parade.
“Gene, works hard and deserves to be successful,”
said Mary Lou Palumbo, Executive Director of the
Mashpee Chamber of Commerce. “We all wish him
continued success.”

FROM THE HEART
BY MARY LOU PALUMBO
Cynthia Goldberg was born with a disability, but her abilities are her main focus.
She is 40 years old, and is already an accomplished author, speaker, artist,
advocate and a new member of the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce. She is
currently enrolled in the Community Leadership Institute of Cape Cod, a program
that introduces participants to the topics and leaders affecting the Cape’s future in
business, health care, politics, social services and more. The timing couldn’t be
better since Cynthia is currently marketing her own business.
“From My Heart is the name of my business, and the exact way that I work,” said
Cynthia. Cynthia is driven, focused and very talented. Her business showcases her
inspirational writing and artwork in a variety of mediums: book, greeting cards,
bookmarks and signed prints. “She has a natural ability, and channels a source of
positive energy from her heart,” said Tessa D’Agostino, Cynthia’s teacher, mentor
and friend. “When she speaks she gets into this zone and says the most amazing
things.”
PHOTO: COURTESY OF SALLY ELAM
“Cynthia was amazing from the start,” said her mother Sally Elam. “The disability was
major, but as a parent I decided to take it one challenge at a time.” Cynthia’s mom
explained that when Cynthia was three months
old she took her to a doctor and asked what
Cynthia wouldn’t be able to do. “He said he
didn’t know, and I didn’t know, so I decided to
shoot for the moon,” said Elam. “It was up to
me to figure it out.”
Cynthia’s mom read many books and studied
everything she could about babies and young
children. “Then after observing Cynthia,” said
Elam, “I decided to make specific toys to teach
the colors, letters, numbers and reading.” When
Cynthia learned all those concepts before the
age of two, Elam started figuring out how to
teach more advanced skills. Soon she also started showing other moms how to do
it. Their children had no special needs, and they wanted her help.
However, as Cynthia got older, she developed a fear of being around people –
until something incredible happened sometime in her thirties that changed her
life. “I found my twin when I was sleeping one night,” Cynthia said. “I found her
deep inside of me, and when I was talking to her, I discovered the real me that was
inside. It helped me face my fears because I liked the other Cynthia.” Cynthia said
with her mom’s help and the discovery of her “real” self she has developed a
56

”
positive outlook on life. “I spread my wings to fly,” said Cynthia. She’s been
soaring along the path of success ever since.
Cynthia has become more independent and thanks Cynthia O’Brien, the owner of
the Market Street Bookshop at Mashpee Commons, for giving her the opportunity
to work in her shop. “When I was working at the bookstore,” Cynthia recalls, “I
saw the book The Tale of Two Cities, and came up with the title for my own book,
The Tale of Two Cynthias.”
The book features Cynthia’s inspirational artwork and poems that depict the fearful
Cynthia she used to be and her transition into the positive and hopeful woman she
is today. Her favorite poem is called “I Love Being Me.” There is also a picture in
the book that she chose to go with the poem because it expresses what she felt
the night she discovered her “real” self in the dream.
Describing the meaning behind her painting, Cynthia said “I see myself in a box. It
reminds me how I couldn’t get myself out of the box and how I had to conquer
those negative feelings and fears.” Cynthia explained that she finally opened the
box by breaking through those barriers
of fear. “I got into the house of worship
and grew into the land of maturity,
responsibility and the land of being
me. That’s why I named the poem,
‘I Love Being Me.’”
“I was proud of Cynthia when I heard
that story,” said Cynthia’s mom. “I was
really touched by that.” Cynthia said,
“Now I’m experiencing different
adventures. I’m more in control now
that I’m able to branch out from the
house to experience the world.”
Cynthia started writing poems about
people who touched her life in some
way and then branched out to

artist who was teaching expressive art classes at a local gallery, Cynthia became
her star student. “Inspired by the feeling of each poem, Cynthia then chose a
painting to match each poem,” said D’ Agostino. “She is so open and expressive,
which allows herself to be in the moment and in the process. Because she works
that way she creates heartfelt pieces.”
Cynthia and Tessa then turned over all their work to Cynthia’s mom who further
edited all the poems, wrote the introduction and published the book in 2013, A
Tale of Two Cynthias, a collection of
inspirational art and poetry. Cynthia
even had a book signing at the Market
Street Book Shop with a successful
turnout. “It makes me happy to see
myself grow,” said Cynthia.“ I’m so
proud of myself.”
Cynthia is using her experience as an
inspirational artist and poet as support
for her new role as an independent
consultant in the area of self-advocacy
for the Kennedy Donovan Center (KDC)
and Cape Cod Community Services.
“I Love Being Me”
“Cynthia is a dynamic woman who has
invested in herself and others,” said
Juliane Dillon, family support
coordinator at KDC, friend and mentor.
“I thank Juliane for introducing me to
the world of advocacy,” said Cynthia.
As a founding member and leader of KDC’s Cape Advocates Standing Together
(C.A.S.T.) program, Cynthia co-leads advocacy groups with Juliane’s guidance, and
assists with trainings and other programs for both children and adults with
developmental challenges. “The goal is to teach individuals how to stand up for
themselves and Cynthia is an example of what can happen,” said Dillon. “There’s
no stopping me now,” said Cynthia. That’s an understatement, since Cynthia’s
days are full. But, said Cynthia, “It’s important for me to give back.”
Cynthia is involved with the Mashpee Kiwanis, Special Olympics, Cotuit Center for
the Arts, Bridges, HAC, Esprit, the Falmouth Jewish Center, the Cape Cod
Children’s Museum, L.I.F.E. Inc., and is very excited to be a proud member of the
Mashpee Chamber of Commerce.
Cynthia is also a popular speaker for human service agencies and other agencies
to promote self-advocacy and is proudly using her newfound abilities to help
others. “Now I am mentoring others to reach for the stars to achieve their
dreams,” said Cynthia, “always from my heart.”

Paul Rifkin, a gifted Cape Cod photographer captured a brilliant double
rainbow that appeared over the Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee.
Symbolizing transformation, the rare and beautiful double rainbow has two arcs
representing the alignment of the outer material world and the inner spiritual
world. Therefore, to see a double rainbow, some say, is a sign of future success.

We have existed for more than 12,000 years,

“It wasn’t long after I started my landscaping
business that I noticed the excitement and business
that was being generated in the town of Mashpee.
After partnering with such strong businesses in
town, we felt that it made sense to move our whole

“We started Heroes in Transition, Inc. in 2009 to honor
the memory of our son Capt. Eric Jones, USMC who
spent his summers on Cape Cod. Eric along with three
other brave Marines, lost his life while supporting a
combat mission in Afghanistan on October 26, 2009.
It is the focus of Heroes in Transition to complete
Eric’s mission. Over the years we have raised thousand
of dollars to help disabled Veterans and their families
including the funding for 40 assistance dogs through
Canines for Combat Veterans. We are very thankful
for the overwhelming support we have received from

“Mashpee Commons has come a long way since it
was first conceived in the mid-1980s. At the time,
the property contained approximately ten businesses.
Today, Mashpee Commons is home to over 100
businesses, roughly 70 of which are locally owned.
As part of our mission, Mashpee Commons will
continue to grow to meet the local demands,
providing the community with access to housing
choices, cultural activities, and community space.”
Buff Chase, President & Owner of Mashpee Commons
“Botello Lumber Company was incorporated in 1979
started as a small cash and carry business in Osterville
later moving to Paul Botello’s (pictured) parents property
in Cotuit. Today the business is located in Mashpee
on over 8 acres of land with almost 100 employees.
My dad, who passed away recently will always be
remembered for his hard work ethic and business
foresight. Paul never doubted himself and his
willingness to succeed was admired and infectious.”
Stephen Botello, Vice President, Botello Lumber Co.
We chose Mashpee, and in particular Mashpee
Commons, because even in the dead of winter, we
found it to be a bustling, beautiful, New England
style shopping center. While there’s always plenty of
paperwork to start a business, we found the town
of Mashpee very friendly and accommodating. The
other businesses in Mashpee have been incredibly
welcoming and helpful. We are very happy and proud
to be a part of the Mashpee business community”.

NEW SEABURY:
A CAPE TRADITION
Over a half-century ago, a new development on Cape Cod won national
attention for a new and usual concept. It blended residential and recreational
features, traditional designs and a master plan that deferred to the
environment while fostering a strong sense of community.
While today, this concept has been duplicated around the country, in the early
1960s this was a new and radical approach to planned development and was met
nationally with excitement and anticipation. Numerous publications heralded this
novel approach. A 1962 Life Magazine article about New Seabury stated this new
type of development “will permit Americans to make leisure an integral part of
their lives without having to rush away from home in harried pursuit of it.” New
Seabury envisioned something innovative and for the past fifty plus years
generations of families have enjoyed the benefits of this imaginative idea.
past 50 years, generations
“Forhavethebeen

of this dream-come-true location.
”
Perched on the dunes overlooking Martha’s Vineyard, Seaside’s premiere location
features a deeded private beach, and Nantucket Sound or golf course locations.
Access to New Seabury’s 42,000 square foot clubhouse is extremely convenient.
As New Seabury embarks into its second half century, it continues to welcome
both new and returning families to its sandy shores. That pioneering idea of the
early 1960s has remained true to its original vision as both residential growth and
capital improvements have been invested into this magnificent property. Model
homes can be viewed daily by stopping by the Sales Cottage at the entrance to
New Seabury, or by calling 877-687-3228. Additional information is available at
NewSeabury.com
The original master plan of distinctive neighborhoods separated by greenbelts,
recreational and water features continues to evolve today. With over 1,500 acres
of land and over 3.5 miles of Nantucket Sound shoreline, New Seabury is an
unrivaled Cape Cod destination. Boasting two championship length golf courses,
a comprehensive tennis center, a waterfront Cabana Club and marina, no other
property offers such a complete package of recreational features. A new 10,000
square foot Athletic Club is set to break ground in 2016 and will add to the many
capital improvements invested into New Seabury over the last 15 years.
Residing at New Seabury also continues to flourish to this day. New residential
development is ongoing with homes within three new neighborhoods available for
purchase. The newest community, The Cottages at New Seabury has attracted
both primary and secondary use homeowners. They have been particularly
appealing to homeowners looking to downsize. These homes evoke a simpler
time and a return to “Old Cape Cod” but with all of the modern conveniences for
today’s lifestyle. White picket fence cottages create images of a quaint New
England village, and these “green” designed homes offer the latest technology
with maintenance free materials and energy efficient products.
The Preserve at Flat Pond neighborhood offering is nearing completion. This
beautiful gated community has become extremely popular with luxurious single
family homes featuring both wooded and ocean views. Several newly completed
homes are now available, built with exquisite details and exceptional
craftsmanship.
New Seabury’s most spectacular offering, Oceanfront Homes at Seaside provides
both newly constructed and custom construction opportunities. Classic shingle
style architecture homes are designed around the most elegant of lifestyles.

ATRIA
WOODBRIAR
BY DONNA SICKLER
Helping Older Adults on Cape Cod
Realize Their Dreams for More Than 20 Years
Imagine being free to pursue your dreams without
the burden of household chores and other
everyday tasks that rob you of your time and
energy. At Atria Woodbriar, we are dedicated to
providing services, amenities, discreet support –
and most importantly, opportunities – that help
our residents enjoy that freedom every day.
One of the ways we help our residents achieve
their dreams is through our signature Engage
Life® events program. When a new resident joins
us, we take time to learn what they already like to
do and what they’d like to try next. Then our
program director draws on that information to
create a social calendar with more than 200
monthly events based on eight key dimensions of
engagement that, together, contribute to a well-rounded life. The goal of Engage
Life is simple: to develop opportunities for growth and connection for our residents
so they feel free to discover a new dream – or reconnect with a long-lost one.
While our first priority is to create an environment where our residents thrive today,
our dream for the future is a healthy planet for their great-grandchildren, too. That
is why when we expanded our campus with the construction of Atria Woodbriar
Place, we used green practices that have earned it LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) Gold® certification. And it is why we are completing
a full-scale renovation at the original Atria Woodbriar Park using the same
eco-friendly construction and design practices.
Like our neighbors in the Green Community of Mashpee, we are proud to be a
sustainable community and are committed to conserving the area’s natural
resources so that all people who call the Cape home can be free to pursue their
dreams for generations to come.

The A.L.S. Family Charitable

15 Years of Being a Light in
the Darkness of A.L.S.
In February, 2016, we commemorated
a bittersweet anniversary as our
Foundation turned 15 years old. We
are proud of how far we’ve come and
continue to grow. Over the past 15 years, we have evolved into the only New
England area nonprofit dedicated to putting A.L.S. patients and their immediate
emotional and financial needs first. In addition, we also raise and donate funds
dedicated to research.
Our Foundation began with two very determined women. Mary Ann (Sciaba)
Singersen and Donna Jordan both lost loved ones to A.L.S. and understood how
to serve the patients and their families, having lived through this ordeal first hand.
In 2001, the two founded the A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation to fill this need.
Currently, the Foundation helps patients and their families all over New England
with our in-house patient programs. Despite the recent press and incredible
outpouring of support and funds, a cure hasn’t been found, which is why what we
do is so important.

CELEBRATING
This September, we will hold our 20th Annual “Cliff Walk” for A.L.S. Fundraiser.
This Annual Walk was started by Cliff Jordan Jr., a young man living with A.L.S. who
aspired to raise funds to help his doctor find a cure. The first Cliff Walk had 60
people and raised $4,000. Our Walk has grown to routinely welcome 1,000
walkers and last year raised over $175,000. These funds are used to help those
living with A.L.S. with expenses such as utility bills, adjustable mattresses, family
vacations, respite care, holiday and back to school shopping, college scholarships
and so much more, the real challenges that families dealing with a horrible illness
face. We focus our funds on helping people today.
