seminar success
The Indian Machine
Tool Manufacturers’
Association (IMTMA) held its
sixth ‘International Seminar on
Machining Technologies’ last
month. The theme of the seminar
was ‘Powering Manufacturing
Growth and Competitiveness’. The
event began with an inaugural
and keynote session wherein
Fraunhofer IWU Chemnitz from
Germany gave an overview
of the latest developments in
machining technologies, before
Ajay Sinha from Hero Moto Corp
presented on his experience
of using integrated automation
lines. Gleason-Pfauter, Hainbuch,
DP Technology, Kennametal,
Hardinge, Guhring, Vargus,
EMAG, Sandvik Coromant,
Rigibore and DurrEcoclean
were among others making
presentations. The seminar is held
every alternate year.

Dugard reports that it
sold 17 machines at the
recent SteelFab 2015 exhibition
in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
The company took the opportunity
to launch its Dugard Union heavy
duty CNC lathes at the show,
and had the 610 model on the
stand, from where is was duly
sold. Dugard also showcased
its E range of vertical machining
centres, selling the 1000E on
display, plus a further 13 machines
of every size in the range: 760E,
1000E, 1350E, 1600E and 2000E.
The third and final machine on
show was a Samsung PL45MC,
which was also sold along with a
Samsung PL35. The stand was
visited by Mr Won – the president
of Samsung Machine Tools – and
Mr Kim – European and Middle
East sales director. The purpose
of their visit was to announce the
renewal of Dugard’s exclusive
agreement to supply Samsung
Machine Tools throughout the
UK, the Middle East and certain
parts of Europe. Dugard says
it is already looking forward to
SteelFab 2016.

More than 200 jobs are
to be created at an Isle
of Wight wind turbine factory in
response to MHI Vestas Offshore
Wind’s decision to start producing
80m turbine blades for a windfarm
in Liverpool Bay. Production of the
blades is due to start in May at the
company’s plant at West Medina
Mills, near Newport.
Vestas says the blades,
which have also been designed,
developed and tested on the Isle
of Wight, will be meeting demand
for DONG Energy’s 258 MW
Burbo Bank Extension project in
Liverpool Bay, as well as potential
future offshore projects.

BMW engages
supply chain
German luxury car
maker BMW says it is
now partnering with seven major
Indian component manufacturing
companies to serve its car plant
in Chennai. The suppliers are
Force Motors (engines and
gearboxes), ZF Hero Chassis
(axles), Draexlmaier India (door
panels), Tenneco Automotive
India (exhaust systems), Valeo
India (HVAC systems), Mahle
Behr (HVAC systems) and Lear
India (seats). With the addition
of the new partnerships, the
level of localisation at BMW’s
Chennai plant will increase to
approximately 50%.

£100m for
aero industry
The Government
has announced that
six projects will share £80m
for aerospace research to help
deliver growth and innovation
in key areas of technology.
Projects that include Formula
One experts teaming up
with jet engine makers, and
aircraft landing gear that
could cut carbon emissions
were announced by Business
Secretary Vince Cable. The
ambitious plans are part of a
£100m boost for UK aerospace
that includes £20m of investment
in the skills that will take the
sector to new heights – including
high technology Masters degree
courses and apprenticeships.

Manufacturing
software developer
Delcam says that Pete Baxter
has been appointed to lead
the company in the new role of
vice president. Mr Baxter joins
Delcam from its parent company,
Autodesk Inc, where he was
a vice president of sales and
served as the country manager
for Autodesk in the UK. He will
now be responsible for managing
the global Delcam business,
and for leading the company in
the next stage of its growth. Mr
Baxter joined Autodesk in 2004.

“Incredible”
start to 2015
Kaltenbach Ltd, the
UK subsidiary of the
Germany-based Kaltenbach
Group, is reporting an “incredible”
start to 2015. The company,
a manufacturer of machinery
solutions for steel processing,
has secured a large number of
significant machinery orders,
hot on the heels of completing
major installations including
the new Tata Teesside Steel
Service Centre facility, which was
announced in August of last year.
“We have seen a major
increase in demand over the
past six months,” says managing
director, Barry Rooney. “Orders
have come for equipment right
across our product range, from
our entry level KKS cold saws
through to our very largest shotblast systems, and including
sawing, drilling, plate processing
and beam bending technologies.”

announced the return of its
bi-annual ‘International Partners in

which will be held at the company’s
headquarters in Lörrach, Germany

Funding will help Troy grow
Barnstaple-headquartered Troy, the
membership-based industrial group, is to
boost its membership and expand its supplier base
as part of plans to grow revenues to £100m by 2018
following £1m in funding from Santander Corporate
& Commercial.
Established in 1986, Troy has grown into a
significant business by combining the purchasing
power of UK independent distributors with major
manufacturers. The firm has seen significant growth
in membership, with revenues of £65m as of 2014,
and forecast turnover for 2015 of £75m. Membership
now stands at over 180 companies covering 232
locations throughout the UK, drawing on a diverse

XYZ names three
open house dates
The 2015 XYZ Machine
Tools open house
season begins in earnest during
March and April, with three dates
announced for events at its
showrooms in Devon, Blackburn
and Livingston. XYZ open houses
provide visitors with opportunities to
do deals on showroom machines,
all of which must be sold to make
way for new stock. In addition there
is the opportunity for customers to
discuss current and future projects
with XYZ’s sales and applications
team, who will be on-hand to
provide information on the optimum
machine tool solutions.
The first event is at XYZ’s
headquarters in Burlescombe,
Devon on 11-12 March, while
those in the north of the country
should head for the Blackburn
event on 18-19 March. For
customers in Scotland, the
company’s Livingston showroom
will host its open house on 22-23
April. The doors open at 08:30
and close at 15:00 each day,
and if previous events are an
indication, the early visitor will
have a distinct advantage when it
comes to doing a deal on the day
for showroom machines.

transmission shafts. Beginning
with soft stage steel turning,
GC4325 and GC4315 insert
grades for internal and external
operations offer high levels
of wear resistance, the ability
to withstand high cutting
temperatures and cutting edges
that stay in shape for long times
in cut, says the company.
Moving to hard part turning,
CBN inserts are offered for
turning high quality steel
surfaces in the hardness range
58-65 HRc. CBN inserts from
Sandvik Coromant have wiper
options optimised for speciﬁc
applications: WH (wiper HPT)
generates low cutting forces for
surface integrity, while WG (wiper
general) permits higher feed
capacity.
The CoroCut 1-2 grooving
programme offers a number
of benefits to those machining
transmission shafts. For instance,
it is said that patented spring
clamping delivers high rigidity
and clamping force accuracy,
while both over- and under- high
precision coolant is available
and connected via plug and play
adaptors. What’s more, CoroCut
1-2 is now available in GC4325
grade for steel.
Clearly, as transmission
shafts, these complex
components demand numerous
gear and spline milling operations.
Among the tools suitable for
addressing this challenge is
CoroMill 176, an indexable insert
cutter for gear wheel machining
that is designed for gears in
the module range 4 to 10. Also
deployed widely for transmission
shaft applications are the CoroMill
172 disc cutter for milling gear
profiles and, similarly, CoroMill
171 for small gear modules. The
latter features inserts with two
cutting edges, while the same
cutter body can hold inserts for
different gear profiles.
Other gear and spline profiles
on transmission shafts can be
tackled using InvoMilling, the
innovative Sandvik Coromant
approach to milling spur and
helical gears using indexable
insert cutters, along with CoroMill
161 and 162.

Roughing (UR) geometry is

its positive rake angle further
reduces cutting forces while
improving depth of cut notching
resistance.

geometry are the WP15CT,
WP25CT and WP35CT grades
that particularly improve
performance on steel workpieces.
Emphasising a combination
of toughness and cutting
performance, the WP15CT is
universally applicable on all
finishing, medium machining and
light roughing steel operations,
wet or dry, interrupted and noninterrupted, it is said.

ITC launches Victory
turning grades
Manufacturers turning a
wide range of materials
face extreme challenges daily.
Machinists understand that finding
the most efficient machining
parameters for their cutting tools
often means a compromise
between speed, feed and cutting
depths. To remove the guesswork
from this, Industrial Tooling
Corporation (ITC) is now offering
UK machine shops the new Victory
family of turning inserts from Widia.
For difficult-to-machine
materials like Inconel and Rene in
complex aerospace applications,
or cobalt-chromes and high
alloy stainless steels in precise
medical applications, the Widia
Victory FS geometry is a ground,
high positive design best used in
finishing tasks where surface finish
and minimising part deflection
are critical. Precision grinding,
proprietary nose geometry and
optimised edge treatment result
in an insert that retains its cutting
edge with minimal heat generation

and good chip breaking, says
Widia. Moreover, the high rake
angle reduces cutting forces and
built-up edges.
The FS line is available with a

Wallwork consolidates
CemeCon licence
Having operated an
exclusive licence
agreement with the German
pure diamond coating specialist
CemeCon for over 12 months,
Wallwork reports growing
business from UK manufacturers.
The licence agreement and an
investment of over £1.2m at its
Cambridge site enables Wallwork
to replicate key CemeCon
processes for the coating of
rotational tooling. For other
coatings the company has direct
express channels to CemeCon in
Aachen, Germany for turnaround
in 48-72 hours.

motorsport, nuclear and other
areas of engineering, coating
performance, technical service
and rapid turnaround in
processing components are key
factors. The addition of genuine
CemeCon coatings alongside our
own products means we have
a more comprehensive portfolio
and can solve many more metal
problems for our customers. Over
the past 12 months we have also
made major improvements to
logistics so that we can deliver a
rapid and reliable turnaround on
processed components.”
To fully replicate the
CemeCon process, Wallwork
has installed an automatic wet
process system for component
preparation prior to coating.
This is integrated with the high
capacity CemeCon 800/9XL
magnetron sputtering coating
system for round shank tooling
and carbide insert coating.
Wallwork says that the process
produces a smooth micro-thin
film, free from droplets and
pinholes. This finish can be
further enhanced by post-coat
wet processing if required.
Patented CemeCon coatings
available include TinALOX
SN2, Hyperlox, ALOX SN2,
CCAluspeed and HSN2. In
addition, the company provides
the complete line of CemeCon
CarbonSpeed, FiberSpeed
and MultiSpeed pure diamond
coatings. With a dedicated
in-house fleet of over 35
vehicles, covering every part of
the UK, Wallwork offers a 48 to
72 hour turnaround service for
UK tool manufacturers, tooling
contractors and end users.
The Cambridge factory
works with aerospace majors,
engineering component
suppliers and universities. The
facility is Nadcap approved,
operates under AS9001 quality
assurance systems and has
multiple company approvals. In
addition, processes are backed
by on-site, professionally staffed
metallurgical laboratories.

As a result, the company
consulted WNT, and the first
recommendation was to change
the drill, moving from powder
metal to solid carbide with WNT’s
WTX Ti drill with through-coolant.
This was held in a WNT Centro
P collet chuck with guaranteed
run-out of less than 3 µm. The
suggested cutting data, much
to the nervous amazement of
Mr Juster, was 55 m/min and
0.08 mm/rev, and no pecking.
As a result of this one change
the drilling cycle time for the four
holes in each part was reduced
to 40 seconds. What’s more,
the drill achieved 200 holes and
looked as good as new when it
had finished.
In a similar vein, the profiling
of the part was also changed to
a 10 mm diameter solid carbide
WNT HPC Ti cutter running at
500 mm/min feed rate, a 10-fold
increase on what was being
achieved before. The final piece
in the jigsaw was to use a 63
mm diameter indexable insert
face mill with WNT’s 5240 grade
inserts to finish-mill the part
and eliminate all of the burr and
surface finish problems.

Cycle times slashed
When Leighton
Buzzard-based
BD Precision Engineers was
presented with the challenge of
machining Inconel 718 by a longstanding customer, it became
apparent that its reputation of
meeting all deadlines would be
under serious threat.
“This was the first job in
Inconel that we had been asked
to machine in 20 years,” says
BD Precision Engineers’ works
manager, Jed Juster. “For advice
we contacted our then tooling
supplier to request cutting data for
the drilling and milling operations.
The advice was to avoid carbide
tools and run a pecking cycle with
0.5 mm steps using a powder
metal drill. Unfortunately, the result
was an 11-minute cycle time to
drill four holes in each component
through 8 mm of material; and
each drill could only achieve five
holes before it either broke or had
to be removed. The pecking was

simply creating a work hardened
surface.”
These drilling problems were
compounded by issues relating
to profile and face milling the
part, both areas that were
generating lots of burrs and poor
surface finish, and an overall
cycle time of 43 minutes per

Toolholder suits
aerospace applications
Schunk has extended
its programme of
hydraulic expansion toolholders
with the Tendo Aviation. After
the introduction of its Tendo-E
compact universal toolholder,
Schunk continues this ethos by
focusing on demanding precision
applications that occur in the
aerospace industry. The company
says that safety devices such as
anti-pullout locking mechanisms
are partly mandatory in this
industry.
Tendo Aviation is said
to combine the strengths of
hydraulic expansion technology
with the benefits of Weldon
toolholders. It convinces
customers with its high run-out
accuracy, a balancing grade of
G 2.5 at 25,000 min-1, vibration
damping and fast tool changing
using an Allen key. For the use
of Weldon shanks, an integrated
anti-pullout locking mechanism
ensures the orientation of the
tools and form-fit clamping, which
prevents tool slip.
Tendo Aviation allows
maximum torque transmission at
consistently high precision and
process reliability, says Schunk,
and offers advantages over
conventional Weldon mountings
and heatshrink toolholders where
run-out accuracy decreases with
time.
According to Schunk, the
typical synergy of run-out
accuracy and the vibration
damping of Tendo hydraulic
toolholders prevents the cutting
edge from wear, extends tool
life and delivers high quality
surfaces. Moreover, the uniform
load profile ensures an extension
of the service life of spindle and
spindle bearing.
Like all the Schunk hydraulic
expansion toolholders, the
Tendo Aviation does not need
additional peripheral equipment.
As a first step it is available
for the interfaces HSK-A63 (8,
10, 12 and 16 mm diameters).
Additionally, it is available with a
HSK-A100 interface (16, 20 and
25 mm diameters). The clamping
diameter can be reduced by
using intermediate sleeves. In
contrast to ER collet chucks or
heatshrink mountings, Tendo
Aviation is resistant to dirt and
requires low maintenance. In
order to increase the service
life of precision mountings and
to maintain maximum process
stability, the precision mounting
can be inspected and optimised.

Hainbuch expands
modular system
Hainbuch says that
changing from OD
clamping to ID clamping without
un-mounting the base clamping
device is done in a matter of 2
minutes with its new modular
system. The basic clamping
device remains mounted on the
machine and serves at the same
time as an interface for other
clamping devices. Whether ID
or OD clamping, saw cuts or
bar work, the pull-back effect of
the mounted add-on clamping
elements enables solid clamping
with optimum characteristics,
such as high rigidity, vibration
reduction and maximum metal
removal rates, says the company.
To make the modular system
usable for smaller quantities
and material dimensions up
to a diameter of 200 mm, the
jaw module was first launched.
Mandrels and clamping
heads can also be used in
the basic unit. As a result, the
modular system offers a 3 in 1
combination of ID clamping, OD
clamping and jaw clamping.
So what about shaft
machining? Well, with the new
member of the family, the face
driver adaptor, this is no longer
a problem. Users can machine a
workpiece over its entire length
without the need for re-clamping,
thus increasing concentric
precision and positional tolerances.
According to Hainbuch, the
advantages are very clear, high
accuracy due to machining in
one clamping, and use of the
company’s Centrex interface
for enhanced concentricity.
Furthermore, Hainbuch says that
the system’s holding power is
excellent. Here, carbide pins dig
into the end face of the shaft and
transmit the torque.
The second practical
clamping aid that Hainbuch has
added to the product range is
the Morse taper adaptor [MK4].
It accommodates tools, centres
and face drivers together with
the Hainbuch clamping devices.
Just three screws are required to
separate this inner connection.
As soon as the three screws
are tightened, users also have
optimal concentricity qualities,
thanks to the Centrex interface,
says the company.
