supports DMG
Mori opening
Delcam was the only
CADCAM company invited
to exhibit at the grand opening of
the new DMG Mori Seiki showroom
in Jakarta recently, where staff from
Delcam’s Birmingham headquarters
and the Delcam Indonesia
subsidiary were in attendance. The
Delcam Indonesia booth featured
demonstrations of the company’s
family of CAM software along with
live machining on a DMC650V
vertical machining centre.
During the event, James Slater
from Delcam’s headquarters gave
three presentations highlighting
PowerMill’s five-axis capabilities,
particularly the simulation,
optimisation and verification
of five-axis machining. The
presentations also covered recent
examples of PowerMill being used
on DMG machine tools, including
development work for the Vortex
area clearance strategy on the
DMU160P at Delcam’s Advanced
Manufacturing Facility in the UK.

Production output climbs
Total production output increased by
0.1% between Q3 2014 and Q4 2014,
with the largest contribution to growth coming from
manufacturing. According to the Office of National
Statistics’ Index of Production, total production output
increased by 1.4% between 2013 and 2014. Of the
four main sectors, manufacturing output was the only
one to rise, increasing by 2.7%. Furthermore, total
production output is estimated to have increased by
0.5% in December 2014 compared with December
2013, with manufacturing again showing the only
main sector rise of 2.4%. This was driven chiefly by
sectors such as transport equipment manufacturing.

Tata Technologies
plans Euro HQ
Engineering services
firm, Tata Technologies,
has announced plans to develop
a new European headquarters
building in Warwick, UK.
The purpose-built European
headquarters building represents
a £16m investment and will
create 200 additional jobs in Tata
Technologies at all levels, from
graduate to more senior roles. The
building will hold approximately
600 staff in total.
The headquarters will
house Tata Technologies’
engineering support services,
as well as a modern R&D
centre that will further develop
the company’s capabilities and
growth opportunities, especially
in the automotive, aerospace and
industrial machinery sectors. Tata
Technologies expects to move into
the new building in the second half
of 2016.

Winds of
change
A South Korean
energy business
is set to build its European
headquarters on Humberside,
creating nearly 200 jobs in
the wind energy business.
The offshore wind tower
manufacturing facility will be
built after CS Wind was given
a £1m government grant via
the Regional Growth Fund. The
company, a subsidiary of South
Korea’s CS Wind Corporation,
says the extra jobs will be
created in the local supply
chain. The factory will be the
UK’s first dedicated to offshore
wind towers.

Brose expands
A Coventry car parts
firm has announced
plans to build a new factory in
the city, creating nearly 500 new
jobs. Brose UK will start work
on its new plant on industrial
land near its base in Colliery
Lane, Exhall, this month.
The plant is part of a £34.8m
investment by the company that
will create 372 in-house jobs
by 2021 – with a further 74 in
the UK supply chain. Brose UK,
which supplies mechatronic
systems for doors, window
and seats to firms like Jaguar
Land Rover, Toyota, Volvo and
Nissan, has been awarded £3m
from the Regional Growth Fund
to support its expansion plans.

Nigerian
success for
Westermans
Westermans International
is reporting strong
sales in Nigeria, a country that
the company says has provided
a good source of income in
a difficult global economy.
Indeed, Westermans states
that Nigeria accounted for 15%
of the company’s revenue in
2013, thanks to being home to
clients such as Safety 2000, Iron
Ox Metalworks and AG Vision
Construction.
“While we did see a drop
in sales to Nigeria during 2014,
due in part to unfavorable foreign
currency rates and falling oil prices,
trade looks like it will recover in
2015 as oil prices have begun to
stabilise, and customs regulations
have been improved to make both
importing and exporting goods
easier,” says company director,
Claire Spillane (pictured).

Equipment of this type is used
not just for pipeline and platform
installation, but also for ongoing
maintenance work.
“The kind of heavy equipment
in which we specialise is
something that will always have
fairly steady demand, especially in
emerging markets,” states Claire.
“Lagos in particular is a huge
hub for the oil and gas sector,
with a lot of offshore welding and
fabrication companies operating
from the region. Demand exists for
pipeline welding, civil engineering,
shipbuilding, construction and
marine maintenance. In addition,
the oil industry is thriving as there
have been a lot of improvements
to Nigeria’s infrastructure. This
sector requires heavy lifting and
welding equipment.

“The German machine
tool industry expects
increased production output
of 3% in 2015 boosted by
developments in the oil price
and the euro exchange rate,”
said Martin Kapp, chairman of
the VDW (German Machine
Tool Builders’ Association) at
the organisation’s annual press
conference in Frankfurt recently.
“The biggest current discernible
risk to our sector is our
business with Russia. Russia is,
or rather was, with a volume of
€500m and a share of 5.5%, the
third-largest market for German
machine tools.”

Proving Factory
opens doors
Vince Cable MP,
Secretary of State for
Business Innovation and Skills,
has launched an advanced
manufacturing initiative for the
automotive industry with an
investment of £21.8m from the
public and private sector. The
Proving Factory is a collaborative
project involving major
companies and groups in the UK
automotive industry. It will result
in component manufacturing at
Tata Steel’s site in Rotherham
and an assembly facility in the
West Midlands, managed by
Productiv. The Proving Factory
will industrialise and validate new
technologies and supply them to
vehicle manufacturers.

Fanuc boosts
production
Fanuc says it has
purchased 695,000
sq m of land on the Mibuhanyuda Industrial Park in
Japan to increase production
capacities for the installation of
new CNCs, servo motors and
servo amplifiers, as Europe's
demand for its products grows.
In the UK alone, Fanuc has
seen orders increase across the
board by over 50% in the past
12 months. Fanuc says it will
also expand its R&D facilities in
Japan with the construction of
four new factories.

enters space
Metrology specialist
Renishaw, has reached
another milestone in the application
of its technology by deploying
products in space for the first time.
The European Space Agency's
Sentinel-1A satellite was launched
last year from the European
spaceport in Kourou, French
Guiana, with Renishaw's new space
encoder technology installed on the
optical communications payload of
the satellite.
The specially developed
space-qualified encoder shares
much of its core technology with
Renishaw's TONiC encoder
range. It is designed to withstand
operating temperatures from
-40°C to +80°C, bombardment by
solar/cosmic radiation and high
mechanical loads consistent with
rocket launch.

Lord Bhattacharyya at WNC
An inspirational centre that is training
the next generation of engineers was
given the VIP seal of approval last month. West
Nottinghamshire College’s Engineering Innovation
Centre, which is training up to 600 students in the
sector, was opened officially by global engineering
icon, Professor Lord Bhattacharyya. Lord
Bhattacharyya, founder of the Warwick Manufacturing
Group, met with students who are studying on a
range of programmes from entry to university level.
The £5.8m centre provides students with vocational
training facilities including dedicated workshops for
mechanical engineering, fabrication and welding.

Wallwork
invests in
HT capacity
With an investment
topping £2m, the
Wallwork Group has expanded
and upgraded the vacuum heat
treatment department at its
Birmingham facility. Housed in
a newly refurbished building
and supported by a grant from
Birmingham City Council, the
department provides high vacuum
heat treatment using modern
furnaces of different capacities
for the thermal processing of both
high and low batch metal parts.
Seven new positions have
been created at the Birmingham
facility as a direct result the
investment. Indeed, there are now
seven vacuum furnaces on site
ranging in load capacity from 250
kg to 4 tonnes. This includes one
of the largest furnaces in the UK,
which accepts loads of 4 tonnes
and over 2.7 m³ in size. The
company also operates from sites
in Manchester and Cambridge.

KMF packing a punch
Staffordshire, UK-headquartered KMF
(Precision Sheet Metal) has expanded the
capacity of its facility in Trenčianske Stankovce,
Slovakia with the addition of a Trumpf Trupunch
3000 punching machine. The machine, with its 1000
hits/minute punch rate, will be used to enhance
the service already provided to customers across
mainland Europe, particularly those that have
the need to outsource larger volume production.
"The new machine will also enhance the offering
we can make to customers due to its tapping and
forming capability," says Radim Vaculín, the facility’s
business manager.

£5m for University
of Nottingham
The University of
Nottingham has been
awarded £5m by the D2N2 Local
Enterprise Partnership as part of
a Growth Deal expansion which
will help create a major new 8000
sq m centre for manufacturing to
attract future generations of world
class engineers to the city.
The new manufacturing
building will be home to the
University’s Institute for Advanced
Manufacturing (IfAM). The move
is part of a £100m investment
in manufacturing research and
training at the University of
Nottingham over the next 10
years, comprising funding from
the university, research councils,
industry, government and the EU.

new and larger headquarters in
Coventry to house a portfolio of
machine tools that will include

MNB Precision has developed
a reputation for tackling complex
parts in difficult-to-machine
and exotic materials such as
Inconel, beryllium copper and
non-magnetic stainless steels.
Rapid growth over the past few
years has prompted continuous
investment in new machines
to expand its capabilities and
capacity. Indeed, the company’s
machine portfolio already
includes a host of Ward CNCsupplied machines – five Hartford

monitor its performance closely
by running a test part upon
installation and again on a
regular basis. The most recent
tests that we ran on the XYZ
VMCs showed them to be as
accurate today as the day they

Productivity boost
fuels JKP relocation
The growing confidence
in the engineering
sector in and around Sheffield
prompted JKP Engineering (UK)
to invest £500,000 in relocating
from its existing premises in
the city centre, to larger, more
suitable premises earlier this
year. The move was funded in
part by productivity gains made
through a previous investment
in CNC machining capacity from
XYZ Machine Tools.
“We started the business 15
years ago with just one machine
tool and have gradually added
on when we had the free cash,”
says Andy Holt, managing
director. “This recent move was
no different, but was accelerated
when we purchased our first XYZ
machining centre. The increased
productivity that we achieved
generated new business and
improved profitability which
allowed us to bring forward

the move, but not before we
had invested further in XYZ
machining centres.”
JKP Engineering now has
six XYZ machines, the latest of
which is a XYZ 1020 VMC with
a 300 mm 4th axis option that

Bridgeport provides
capacity and capability
Increasing the capacity
and capability of its
machine shop with two new
Hardinge Bridgeport machining
centres will ensure vintage and
historic car replica and restoration
specialist Tom Dark Engineering
maintains its pole position in this
highly competitive field. The two
machines were supplied by the
Engineering Technology Group
and have fitted seamlessly into
the company’s manufacturing
operations.
“Some of the replica’s
we create are of high value,
legendary cars from the likes
of Maserati, Bugatti and MG,”
explains founder and managing
director, Tom Dark. “Our
reputation has been built on being
able to recreate anything from an
obsolete suspension component
to a complete competition or road
ready car, and to do that we have
to have the manufacturing support
infrastructure.”
Tom Dark’s machine shop
and assembly plant is located in a
converted, custom designed barn
near Kiddington, Oxfordshire.
“We have a mixed workshop
capability but were very careful
when we specified the two
Hardinge machines to ensure they
gave us the optimum capacity
when we need it, coupled with the
precision, capability and reliability
essential in the business,” says
Mr Dark.

new Bridgeport XR 760 VMC and
a large capacity Bridgeport GX
1600 VMC, both of which provide

the scope to machine large
components such as a complete
cylinder block casting to the
plethora of small components that
make up a car or sub-assembly.
“An in-house cylinder block
machining capability is important
to us because we also machine
pistons and camshafts, giving us
complete process control,” says
Mr Dark. “In the past, we have
machined blocks from billets not
castings – a Bugatti Type 50B
engine comes to mind – and that
whole project probably entailed
some 6000 hours of machining
and building.
“The Bridgeport machines are
undoubtedly the cornerstone of
our manufacturing operations,” he
concludes. “In the past we have
operated a range of Bridgeports,
so we are long standing users and
they have held us in good stead.”

Heller machines
achieve 95% uptime
Following a
management buyout
(MBO) in 2009, one of the UK's
largest aluminium diecasters,
Welshpool-based CastAlum,
started adding value to its
products by machining some of
its castings. The development
was triggered by the award of
two major, long term automotive
contracts for the supply of
machined steering gear housings
and transmission cases. Until
then, all castings had been
delivered to customers in their raw
state for machining further along
the supply chain.
The projected production
volumes from the two new
contracts, which in 2015 will
require CastAlum to machine
700,000 castings, warranted
consideration of a transfer line.
However, it would have been
difficult to adapt if the automotive
components change in the
future. It would also have meant
a substantial investment before
the volumes had ramped up,
with potential to cause cash flow
problems.
Sequenced purchase of twinpallet, four-axis, horizontal-spindle
machining centres was deemed
to be the answer, as they could
be installed progressively to suit
rising throughput and are easy to
reconfigure to produce almost any
component.
Peter Radcliffe, CastAlum’s
chairman and one of four directors
involved in the MBO, says: “After
initial cutting trials we chose Heller
H2000 HMCs as the supplier
offered the best value turnkey
package and had a reputation
for good after-sales service. This
was key, as the initial two HMCs
installed in quick succession
during 2009 were our first
machine tools.
“Another factor that steered
us toward Heller was its close
working relationship with tooling
firm, Mapal, whose cutting tools
are used extensively in the
automotive industry.”
A total of 10 H2000 HMCs
now populate the main production
hall at Welshpool. Each is able to
machine any type of steering gear
housing or transmission case in
two operations.
Keith Brown, CastAlum’s
managing director, who was also
involved in the MBO, adds: “The
Heller machining centres have
an average uptime of 95%, which
is very high for manually loaded,
twin-pallet machines. This is
due to efficient presentation of
material to the second pallets, and
from there to the spindles, which
minimises changeover times.”

trunnion pivots and drives take up
a lot of space.
Additionally, Mr Gleeson
points out that the DMU table’s
swivel axis is from front to back,
in the Y-axis, unlike with most
trunnion machines on which the
swivel axis is in X. If the DMU
table is tipped up to 90° and
locked, there is a lot of clearance
for machining longer parts than
would normally be possible.
Duckworth & Kent has frequently
used this capability, which avoids
the need to use an angle bracket
for fixturing components.
The versatility of the machine
coupled with the low cost of fiveaxis manufacture has also resulted
in work queuing for the DMU 50.
It is the most accurate machine
currently on the shop floor, easily
able to hold ± 5 µm tolerance,
thanks in part to the optional linear
scales fitted in X, Y and Z.
The machine features an
18,000 rpm/35 kW spindle, 24 m/
min rapid traverse, tool and part
probing, and a Heidenhain-based
DMG ERGOline control with 19"
colour screen and 3D software.

Subcontractor expands
five-axis machining

precision engineering
company, Duckworth & Kent,
which specialises in low-tomedium volume production of
complex components in difficultto-machine materials, has
purchased a DMU 50 vertical
machining centre from DMG
Mori to strengthen its five-axis
machining capability.
The machine is the first on
site capable of interpolative
machining in all five axes
simultaneously, although to date
it has been used exclusively
for three-axis work with the
rotary CNC axes positioned and
clamped. A move to full five-axis
machining is planned.
According to managing
director Terry Gleeson, the DMU
50 was selected as its footprint
was small – space on the shop
floor is limited. The machine

also happened to cost less than
the other shortlisted model. A
further advantage of the DMU
configuration is that the -5°,
+110° swivelling rotary table
offers a larger clamping area than
tables on equivalent trunnion-type

Starrag machines
keep BAE on course
The Starrag Group
currently has 43
machine installations on the BAE
Systems site in Salmesbury –
and all are achieving availability
rates of better than 95% as a
result of an ongoing ‘continual
progress’ partnership with the
Swiss machine tool builder based
on a programme of planned
maintenance.
Included in the portfolio
of Starrag machines at the
Lancashire site are twin, eightmachine FMS systems installed
three years ago in 610, the
machine shop dedicated to
titanium production. The 9000
sq ft facility is responsible for
producing 75 different components
for the Lockheed Martin F-35 joint
strike fighter jet, part of the biggest
recorded weapons programme in
history, with each plane reported
to cost some $100m.
Other facilities house, for
example, nine multi-million pound
Starrag Group Droop + Rein
machines. These are installed
in air- and humidity-controlled
booths and are producing profiles
and holes in hybrid titanium/
composite 3D panels ready for
assembly. This new method
of ‘direct-to-line’ assembly
eliminates any normal time
consuming ‘fitting’ operations as
part of the aft and vertical tails for
both the BAE Systems Typhoon
and F-35 fighter jets.
Even with such a number
of Starrag machines, BAE’s
commitment to investment is
not abating: further equipment
from the Swiss builder,
including an extension to the
existing FMS set-ups and
an additional, duplicate fourmachine installation, are on the
company’s order schedule to
meet strengthening F-35 volumes
and the upward forecast of some
3000 total flying units to be built
in the UK.
As a result, maintaining ROI
targets and ensuring annual
cost-down ratios are met through
productivity gains, means
machine availability is a primary
concern. And by working jointly
with Lockheed and the Starrag
Group, the 43 machines are on
record for maintaining better
than 95% availability, which
ensures the target utilisation of
85% for the planned load time
is achieved. To help with this,
Starrag has engaged its own
onsite manager at Salmesbury
with the support of six technical
engineers, who are also
permanently onsite.

the in-cut elements of the cycle
are shorter, as metal removal is
fast with the 26 kW/15,000 rpm
spindle.”
Large reductions in machining
times are evident across many
aerospace and automotive parts
produced in the cell by BCW
for well-known companies such
as Airbus, Messier Dowty, GKN
Driveline, JLR, Ford and Aston
Martin. The subcontractor is
a first tier supplier to many of
them, developing and supplying
prototypes as well as delivering
production components to tight
schedules.
The performance of
the new 40-taper, four-axis
MB5000H, which has 500 x 500
mm pallets and a machining
volume of 760 mm³, has
been so impressive that the
subcontractor has standardised
on Okuma for all future HMC
purchases. Mr Kilfoyle says
that the decision was reinforced
by NCMT’s installation and
commissioning of the machine,
which he described as the most
professional to date of any
supplier to BCW’s four factories
in the Burnley area.

at BCW Engineering
Subcontract machinist,
BCW Engineering, has
installed a Japanese-built Okuma
MB5000H horizontal machining
centre with a 10-pallet pool
to add capacity for producing
high precision components for
the aerospace, automotive and
off-road vehicle sectors. The
machining cell was delivered by
UK agent, NCMT, to BCW’s new,
30,000 sq ft unit in Burnley.
Tony Kilfoyle, group
engineering director says: “One
aluminium aerospace part we
machined on another make of
twin-pallet HMC took 23 minutes
to complete, whereas the Okuma
needed just 11 minutes. The
reduction is partly due to being
able to present a component
on its pallet to the spindle more
quickly – as it comes out of the
pallet pool already fixtured, so
set-up does not delay the start
of the next cycle. Changeover is
therefore limited to the automatic

pallet change time, which is no
more than 35 seconds.
“Once the part is being
machined, the cycle is quicker
because idle times are short due
to the 60 m/min rapids in the
linear axes and 2.5 seconds tool
change,” he adds. “Additionally,

PAL Robotics is based
on the third floor of
an office building in central
Barcelona, a few minutes by car
from the city’s busy and famous
Las Ramblas promenade. The
company, run by Italian CEO
Francesco Ferro, is building a
reputation for its cutting-edge,
innovative humanoid robots used
in service applications such as
hotels and shops, as well as in
warehouses and supermarkets.
To the layman, these are humansized robots that look, move
and sound like automatons from
science fiction movies. But,
they’re not fantasy. They are in
fact advanced, highly engineered
creations, designed in-house by a
group of talented engineers.
Up until now, all of the metal
parts used to make a robot
have been sourced from various
external subcontractors and
suppliers in Spain and overseas.
“Using subcontractors has
its advantages, but also some
serious limitations, especially
during the prototype and
development phase of a new
design,” says Mr Ferro. “For
example, a complex assembly
such as a hand includes very
precise metal parts. We make
many changes and improvements
with an iteration of the design
process. Sourcing the parts
externally can slow down the
prototype process considerably.
“The Haas Mini Mill is the
perfect size and power for
our workshop,” he adds. “As
it’s our first CNC machine, it’s
also important that it’s easy to
program and use, and that it’s
reliable. I didn’t know much about
Haas before we bought it, but
when I started to investigate,
I discovered very good things.
The price and performance were
exactly what we were seeking.”
