After 49 years running and 47 homes built, Hawaii Community College’s
Annual Model Home Project is more like a force of Nature than an
educational program. Students participating in this year’s 3-bedroom,
2-bath exercise represent the third generation honing their skills by building
a real house that real people will live in; supporting them in their mission
are a host of contractors and suppliers. . . many of whom are graduates
of the program themselves. It’s a feedback loop that makes the most of
the time and energy students, instructors and industry donors put into
the learning experience. HPM is proud to support this common sense
approach by providing discounted building materials and awarding
“Build Better Builders” scholarships to two returning carpentry students
who join the program in their second year.
Carpentry professor, Gene Harada runs the project, coordinating input from the college’s architectural, agricultural,
carpentry, diesel mechanics, electrician and Hawaiian protocol programs as the students design, landscape, build,
wire and, eventually, bless the home. Over the past six years,
the project has kept pace with the demand for green
building services by incorporating solar and energy
efficiency technologies into the design. This year,
78 students and 14 subcontractors are involved in
completing the 1,965 sq.ft. structure. The effort is
funded by the Department of Hawaiian Homelands
which awards the home to one of its lessees.
