February 2016
Words from the President
Ready, set, go ….. After meeting and planning with our wonderful board I can hardly wait for all
of us to participate in the activities planned for us this year.
The board members of our Guild are the most competent group I’ve ever worked with and how
truly blessed I am to be part of it.
Plan to attend our “Let’s Do Lunch” get-together on Saturday February 13. This is a great
chance to get to know other Guild members, have a great lunch, ask questions about the guild, or
just hang out. We’d love to have you join us. Hope to see you there, Saturday February 13,
11:30, at the Copper Kettle Restaurant, 1456 Belt Line Rd #147, Garland, TX 75044, (972) 4955678. This restaurant is located on the same corner as Babe’s (Garland Rd. and Beltline Road).
Only a couple of months until the President’s Challenge! How’s your Jacob’s Ladder quilt
coming along? The quilt must be finished in order to be entered into the contest. I’ll have more
information for you at the February meeting.
We’ve had some mention of phone distractions during meetings – please silence your
phones.
Your comments and suggestions are important to me – please let me know if there’s something
on your mind.
Thank you for another great month. Happy Quilting!
Suzy Boyle, President
Programs News
Has the winter chill provided you quality time for quilting? The Debbie Maddy workshop was
filled with the production of beautiful quilt beginnings. I encourage each of you to opt to enjoy
one workshop. We have workshops with a broad range of quilting interests so be sure and come
to the program table and SIGN UP!
On February 2, the Guild welcomes Faye
Labanaris, author of six books and guest on
Alex Anderson’s show. She shares her visit
with us while being an instructor at the
KDAA. Her lecture is “Quilts with A
View”. Her innovative technique frames a
quilt with a piece of focus fabric and shows
us how to draw the eye to view the quilt.
On March 1, the Guild celebrates the annual Founder’s Spool Award, the presentation of
Volunteer Awards, and the President’s Quilt Challenge. Is your Jacob’s Ladder quilt ready?
This has been a great challenge for me as I have given my seam ripper a work out on my
challenge quilt!
Also at the March 1 Guild meeting, the Guild will work on the completion of our TAQG project
so keep those blocks coming in!
April 5th brings us Winnie Fleming and her “Borders Bonanza”. We all
recognize her from the former Quakertown Quilt patterns, plus she is an award
winning quilter and author. How many ways can you add borders to frame your
quilts? She shows us endless ways to frame your center quilt. Check her quilts
on line. I counted five borders around one simple block. She keeps on going,
border after border. (http://www.craftsy.com/instructors/winnie-fleming)
April 9th is our Member workshop. We will begin to start off with “Skill Builders” demos and
conclude our workshop with a fast and furious Jelly Roll Race. All you need is one jelly roll, or
strips from your stash, scissors, machine, and lots of bobbins. They say a quilt top in less than
one hour???? Get set, start your machine and GO! A prize for the winner! There is no charge
for this workshop.
May 3rd brings us Deborah Burkett. Educator and author, she wraps us
up into quilting history. She started the famous quilt show, “Aunt
Lillie’s Annual Fourth of July Show” in Troup, TX. Her lecture
“Quilts and Their Story” will show how quilts bind generations
together. Her collection of quilts will speak out to you and I can’t wait
to hear about “Turkey Red.”
Have a special Valentine’s Day with a nice cup of tea with sugar.
Thank you for your quilting passion.

TAQG News
BRING YOUR 5-INCH SQUARES AND STRIPS to the February meeting!
Since February is the last guild meeting before we assemble our Goodie Bag donations for
TAQG Rally Day, we still need a bunch! Look for a basket near the tee shirt table.
What, you ask, is Rally Day? And what exactly is TAQG? The Texas Association of Quilt
Guilds (TAQG) is a confederation of over 30 guilds in the North and East/Central Texas area.
Made up of representatives from each guild, TAQG offers assistance of all kinds to the local
guilds, and their big annual event is RALLY DAY, which is held the second Saturday of July.
In 2016, Rally Day will be July 9 from 9:00AM to around 3:00PM at Mimosa Lane Baptist
Church in north Mesquite. Admission is free to all guild members (just bring your guild
membership card) and features a nationally known speaker (Kimberly Einmo in 2016) plus a
mini-quilt auction, guild raffle quilts, door prizes galore, two fabulous raffle baskets( fabulous as
in: includes a new sewing machine!) and a great time to get together with quilt buddies. The first
500 people in the door get a Goodie Bag with something from each of the participating guilds kind of like a Christmas stocking for quilters, only in July!
Our contribution to the Goodie Bag in 2016 is a charm pack bundle, made up of 10 five-inch
squares plus addresses for on-line sites with ideas for using 5-inch charms. We will assemble
these charm packs during the March guild meeting. Since we need 5,000 squares, more fabric
donations are needed!
Meeks Marsha, TAQG President, GQG TAG Rep.
Garland Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes
January 5, 2016
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by President Suzy Boyle. Suzy welcomed everyone
to our January meeting.
Presentation of the 2016 Board: Suzy Boyle introduced all of the 2016 board members.
Minutes: Debbie Simms presented the minutes from the November and December meetings and
they were approved as presented.
Treasurer’s Report: Roxanne Garrett gave the treasurer’s report. The beginning balance was
$17,470.37 with income of $751.25 and expenses of $784.00 and an ending balance of
$17,437.62. This the balance for end of quarter and end of 2015. The report will be filed for
audit.
TAQG: Marsha Meeks reminded us that we will be putting together charm packs at the March
meeting. Please bring 5” strips or 5” squares for the charm packs.
The guild will be making new banners for First Presbyterian Church in 2016.
Retreat: Cynthia Bennett will be taking reservations for the Compass Center retreat. The
retreat is in May. Sharon Heironimus asked the members if they would be interested in a
retreat in the fall. More information will follow.
Raffle: Virginia Hauer held two drawings for the 2015 Raffle quilt. The winners were Carla
Byrom for sitting with the quilt and Linda Carter for selling tickets.
BOM: Barbara Brooks said that there were instructions available at the BOM table for
February’s BOM. You get 2 tickets for each block turned in or you can buy tickets for $1.
A silent auction was held for the Dresden Plate blocks that were donated by Roxanne Garrett.
In September a mini auction and salad supper will be held. The quilts are not to exceed 25
inches square. This is to raise funds for our programs.

Saturday Jan 9. Faye Labanaris will be here in February with her program of “Quilts with a
View.”

Wrapping up 2015, we sold 1950 tickets for a grand total of
$1,852. Most people opted for 6 tickets for $5, therefore the
dollar total is different from the ticket sales. We had a net
gain of $352 from the 2015 raffle quilt.
The quilt was won by GQG member Linda Carter, who also
won the basket for ticket sales. Carla Byrom won the basket
for sitting with the quilt. Once again in 2016, we will have a
basket for the person who sold the most tickets and sat with
the quilt the most hours.
The 2016 raffle quilt is with Carolyn Cortez now. I can hardly wait to see the fruit of her
labors. The quilt is titled “Life in Texas” and is an adaptation of “Life in the Midwest” by
Missie Carpenter. The first showing of the quilt will be at the Dallas Quilt Show on March1112. If you are new to quilting, the Dallas Quilt Show is a must see. If you love antique quilts or
are a fan of Gerald Roy’s contribution to Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting, This Old Quilt, they
will have 35 quilts from his antique quilt collection.
The guild is placing a call for a machine quilter to quilt the 2017 raffle quilt. Per our by-laws
and the 501c3 rules, we cannot pay a member to quilt the quilt. For years Carolyn Cortez has
quilted our raffle quilts, but she wants to open up the opportunity for someone else who may be
interested. If you are interested in quilting the 2017 raffle quilt, please e-mail me:
[email protected] or phone 214-304-6249.
The 2017 raffle quilt has been selected by the Executive Board. We were looking for a patriotic
theme. A member generously donated a completed top of Fons & Porter’s “Stars and Stripes
Sampler” and it was accepted.
Thank you so much.
Virginia Hauer, Raffle Quilt
BLOCK OF THE MONTH
At the January meeting we had 18 Scottie Dog Blocks that were broken into two sets and raffled
off to two separate winners. We made $80 on these blocks. The Silent Auction of the two sets
of Dresden Plates, donated by Roxanne Garrett, raised $40, they were won by Judy
Williamson and Barbara Cissne.
The BOM pattern for the February meeting is a Heart in a Star Block and is on the website,
http://www.garlandquiltguild.com.
We will have a Patriotic Exchange in July of either a Wall Hanging or a Table Runner. More
details will be forthcoming in the months ahead.
We will be having a Mini Silent Auction and Salad Supper in September 2016. We are now
collecting minis for this auction, so be busy on these cold days sewing up minis for the auction.
Forms will be available to complete when you turn these in each month (February-August 2016).
This is a separate event to raise money for the Guild’s programs.
If any of you wish to prepare a block for the monthly Block of the Month Raffle, please contact
Barbara Brooks ([email protected]) or Barbara Cissne
([email protected]).

New Banners for Our Host Church
In appreciation for the generosity and cordiality the First Presbyterian Church has shown our
Guild, a committee has been formed to make new banners, following the liturgical year seasons,
as suggested by the church pastor. Marsha Meeks has organized the committee, and volunteer
banner-makers include Jean Blalock, Suzy Boyle, Evelyn Brown, Carla Byrom and Mary Jo
Ferril. Dana Dunlap will serve the committee as church liaison and advisor. If you are
interested in participating, contact Marsha Meeks.
Right now, the committee members are deciding their season and designing their banners. All
banners will be completed in 2016, and we will show the finished products to the Guild in Show
and Tell!
Meeks Marsha, TAQG President, GQG TAG Rep.
PATRIOTIC WALL HANGING OR TABLE RUNNER
EXCHANGE
The Garland Quilt Guild will have a Patriotic Wall Hanging or Table runner Exchange at the
July 5th Meeting. Make any kind of patriotic item that you would like to receive yourself and
bring it to the July 5th meeting to exchange. We will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons for the
exchange to be voted on by the membership. If you bring a Wall Hanging or Table Runner,
you will be taking another one home made by a member of the Guild. It will be great fun to see
what everyone comes up with and you will have something new to grace your home with for the
holiday.
Below are listed several sites with free patterns. Visit you favorite quilt shop for patterns, books
and magazines. (Don’t forget our library, too!) For those creative souls among us, design your
own.

Community Service and Special Projects
Part of community service, now that the Granville Quilt Display is over, is to bring Quilt Trunk
Shows to Senior Centers and Nursing Homes. So save this date: February 25th, Thursday, at
2:30 pm, we will be visiting the Garland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. I will be looking
for volunteers at the February meeting, so consider getting out and showing the residents our
skills and maybe helping them remember their sewing days. I don’t know about you, but I think
a Senior Home is probably on my bucket list. The Garland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is
located at 321 North Shiloh Rd., Garland, TX. I’ll remind you at the meeting, but it promises to
be fun!

Hospitality
Hearts all around this month. I am including a recipe that Linda Boyer sent me in October for
her great Cheesy Bacon Ball that she made for us all to enjoy.
For the new members or any not aware of how the refreshments appear at our meetings we ask
our members who have a birthday that month to bring refreshments to share. Sometimes we have
more birthdays and lots of goodies. This month going thru the membership book it is going to be
a slim month as there are only 9 members that have birthdays in February. We won't turn down
goodies brought by other members!

February Birthdays
Help me in wishing the following members a Happy Birthday and I hope I haven't missed any

1 8ozs of sharp cheddar cheese shredded
1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese
1/2 cup Miracle Whip

3 green onions chopped
1/2 lb crisp and crumbled bacon or chopped pecans
Mix 1st 5 ingredients, then add chopped onions.

Sunshine and Shadows
Shirley Michie, one of our past Presidents, is going through tests and will soon begin treatment.
Please keep Shirley in your thoughts and prayers. There are several other Guild members with
health and family health issues. Let’s remember them, as well as Sally Ashbacher with her
home restoration beginning in the near future.
Carolyn Kerr, Sunshine and Shadows
Thank you
It goes without saying that the generous financial contributions I received from many members
of the Garland Quilt Guild completely overwhelmed me at the January meeting.
It is mind boggling how many unexpected expenses are cropping up along the long road to
getting a new household set up for me and my precious dog Daisy. I still don't fully know what
is ahead for me but do know you have greatly helped smooth the path that is to come.
Our guild is by far the best ever and don't you ever forget it.
Fondly,
Sally Ashbacher

Sack Lunch Ministry
The demand for the church’s sack lunches has grown tremendously, with the church now giving
away about 35 lunches a week to the homeless or the hungry. The following is the list of items
for the sack lunch ministry operated by our facility location host, First Presbyterian Church. Just
pack the lunches in a small brown paper sack with non-perishable items, such as:







canned tuna or chicken salad
peanut butter and crackers
cheese and crackers
chips
fruit cup
cookies
pudding
You may also include a drink (although not necessary) as well as a napkin and spoon. Items should
not require a can opener. Bottled water is also much appreciated... You can find many of these
items at a Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Wal-Mart, etc.
The church also collects pancake mix and syrup. We also have a tip jar at the sign-in table, and
if everyone were to throw in their loose change we could donate a great deal to the church each
month. Thank you so much!
