juice from the bitter cassava -a pole is placed through the loops
on each end - the matapee is constructed in such a way that as it
is stretched, it constricts the grated cassava so that the white, milky
juice is squeezed out and runs down along its sides
- Mrs. Hummelen endured an embarrassing moment when she
put her arm inside the matapee to demonstrate how it worked
during a presentation to a Women's Missionary Society group
- she needed assistance in order to extract her arm!

- church closed in ca. 2005? – interestingly, it narrowly missed
being closed by the Presbyterian Church in ca. 1919
A famed son of this congregation was Edmund Henry Oliver.
Rev. Dr. E. H. Oliver became the professor of history and economics
at the University of Saskatchewan as well as the principal of the fledgling
St. Andrew’s (Presbyterian) College affiliated with the university. He left
the university and enlisted in May, 1916 as Chaplain of the 196th
Western Universities Battalion. Dr. Oliver established the University of
Vimy Ridge in France (a.k.a. the Khaki College of Canada) during the winter
of 1917-18. Dr. Oliver later served a term as Moderator of the United Church
of Canada from 1930 until 1932.
Quite amazingly, this modest little church was also the home church of
Rev. A. B. Simpson, former minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
While he was minister of Knox Presbyterian Church, Hamilton, Ont. from 1865
through 1873, it had the largest congregation of the denomination in Canada.
He later moved to the United States, becoming the minister at Chestnut Street
Presbyterian Church, Louisville, Kentucky followed by the pastorate at Thirteenth

Street Presbyterian Church, New York City. In 1887, he became
the founder of two interdenominational organizations – namely,
the Christian Alliance and the Evangelical Missionary Alliance.
These two organizations amalgamated in 1897 to form the Christian
and Missionary Alliance which ultimately developed into a separate
denomination.

Above items belonged to the Rev. Harry Crump (1880-1969), who served
as a Presbyterian missionary among First Nations in Manitoba, which
included: the Rolling River Reserve (1925-1930); LIzard Point Reserve
near Rossburn (1932-1943); a return to the Rolling River Reserve
(1943-1950); and Sioux Village Reserve (a.k.a. Dakotah Tipi Reserve) near
Portage la Prairie (1950-1961).
Rev. Crump was ordained on June 26, 1953 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.
This ordination honoured Rev. Crump's many years of dedication. (Acts and
Proceedings, 1953). In 1961, Rev. Crump retired.

When Ilderton Church closed, its members amalgamated with
Bethel Church, Proof Line.
Ilderton Church was constructed in 1895 and was closed in 1961.
The church was likely demolished in ca. 1965.
The date on the back of the first page of the manuscript is June 25,
1895, which is very likely the date of the laying of the cornerstone.
The cornerstone of Ilderton Presbyterian Church was located in the
garden of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Proof Line, London Township
at the time of the closure of Bethel Church in Jan. 2015.

Probably the most famous of Copping's Bible illustrations was
'The Hope of the World' (1915). This depicts Jesus sitting with a
group of children of different races from different continents.
Dr. Sandy Brewer wrote of this image: "The Hope of the World,
painted by Harold Copping for the London Missionary Society in
1915, is arguably the most popular picture of Jesus produced in
Britain in the twentieth century. It was an iconic image in the
Sunday school movement between 1915 and 1960".

church was constructed in 1923,the congregation invited the
local Methodist Church (North Dawn Methodist) to join them
which they did. This may have been the only local union of a
Presbyterian and Methodist Church in Lambton County prior to
Church Union in 1925.
