“And God Saw That It Was Good”
Celebrating Catholic Education Week
April 30-May 5, 2006
The Catholic school is an integral part of the Church’s mission to proclaim the Gospel, build faith
communities, celebrate through worship and serve others. Each Catholic school is a unique faith-centered
community, which integrates thinking and believing in ways that encourage intellectual growth, nurture
faith and inspire action.
At the Toronto Catholic District School Board, we teach more than the basics. Through a Christ-centered
vision, and in partnership with parents, parishes and communities, we serve students from diverse
cultural, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds in Canada’s largest and most dynamic city.
Our mission is to educate students to their full potential. In order to provide students with the qualities
they will require, our Vision of TCDSB is a school system that:
• is Christ-centered;
• is student focused;
• demonstrates a clear sense of purpose;
• is visibly and demonstrably Catholic;
• reflects empowering leadership;
• applies collaborative decision making;
• is innovative; and
• provides role models among all stakeholders for all these qualities.
During this celebration of Catholic Education Week, we are called to reflect upon the good that is inherent
in our faith, and in our school communities, and indeed to celebrate the accomplishments of our students
and our achievements as a Catholic school system. We are also challenged to do whatever we can to make
things better in those areas that require additional attention and support.
I thank our staff, our parents, our parishes, our trustees and our many Catholic school supporters for the
vital role that they each play in the education of our young people, and in the continued success of our
Catholic school board.

facilities and accommodation issues. Three meetings remain this spring:
•
April 24, 2006 7 p.m.
Cardinal Newman Catholic School, 100 Brimley Road South, Scarborough

These sessions will be followed by community consultation in the Fall of 2006 to gather input for the
development of the Board’s Long Term Accommodation Plan. Further information is available on the
Board’s website at www.tcdsb.org (see LTAP Consultation under the “New” heading on the homepage.)
New playground at elementary school
The Board has entered into a site development licence agreement with the Tricon Film & Television for
the installation of a new playground development at St. Charles Catholic School in North York at no cost
to the Board. Tricon is providing the design concept using its appointed landscape architect in conjunction
with the school community, and materials and installation of the new playground in association with
Tricon’s sponsors and volunteer trades. The budget for the work is in the range of $80,000-$100,000.
Tricon will film the progress and then air it on television at a later date. Work is scheduled to be
completed during the month of May. All work will be supervised by Board staff, and will be completed in
accordance with Board standards and specifications.

Transportation services remain under funded
According to a recent report, TCDSB’s student transportation services provides a relatively efficient system when
compared with its provincial counterparts. Despite the efficiency, the Board is still unable to provide some core
services such as secondary school and French Immersion transportation due to funding constraints. In order to fund
the additional services in areas such as Gifted, Extended French, French Immersion and Secondary School, the
transportation budget would need to increase to $33,254,834, up more than 55% from the current $21,689,630.
Unless the Ministry of Education amends the Transportation Funding Model the shortfall in funding would have to
be provided from other funding envelopes, which would result in a reduction of existing services. A recent Ministry
funding increase of $400,000 for transportation is a one time enhancement that may not be available in future years.
Additional Grants Received by TCDSB
A report summarized additional grants received by TCDSB in the last four weeks that are over and above
the regular funding provided.

St. Joseph students slide into some new playground equipment
MICHELE mclean
Beach Riverdale Mirror
Students cheered at the new playground unveiling at St. Joseph Catholic School last week. "This
playground is very needed," said Anthony Tacoma, principal of St. Joseph. "This is an inner-city school. Our yard
is all pavement and concrete." The 250 students at the school on Leslie Street, just north of Queen Street, didn't
have any playground equipment.
"This is it," he said. "A lot of Catholic schools have no play equipment." Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher
(Toronto-Danforth), told the students at the unveiling that they will benefit from the equipment. "It's good for you
to get some exercise," she said. "It will provide good exercise on your recess." Ward 11 trustee and vice-chair of the
Toronto Catholic District School Board, Angela Kennedy, said the new playground will help the students both
physically and mentally.
"You'll have lots of time to play on the new equipment," she said. "You'll do better on your school work if you play
hard on this. You're going to have it for a long, long time."
Father Frank Wagner of Holy Name Catholic Church blessed the new playground. "May the playground always be
a place of fair play and fun to deliver healthy bodies and healthy spirits," he said.
The total cost of the playground was $70,000. Money was raised through the school's parent council, the board
gave $35,000 to cover the cost for the ground cover under the equipment and Kennedy gave $5,000 from money
she received from the board to disperse to a school in her riding. "The agreement with the board was that if we get
the money together for the structure, they would cover the cost of the ground cover," Tacoma said. "That soft
asphalt surface is very expensive." At the event, Tacoma thanked Canadian Tire for its donation of $7.500 and
Navhar for its $8,500 contribution.
Tacoma said when he started working at the school five years ago, the school had been saving for about 10 years
and had about $5,000.
"The parent's council really went to work after that and put it together in the next three years," he said.

Scarborough's provincial basketball champions honoured
By JOANNA LAVOIE
Scarborough Mirror 04/13/06
It's one thing to be recognized by your
school community but to be honoured by
the provincial government is tremendous,
said coach Ron Burrows of Scarborough's
Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic
Secondary School Titans boys basketball
team.
The Malvern squad won this year's QuadA Ontario Federation of School Athletic
Associations championship, the highest
level of boys high school basketball in the
province. Invited to Queen's Park by local
MPP Bas Balkissoon (ScarboroughRouge River), the team was treated to a
special reception for their hard work and
dedication on Wednesday. "This is a
tremendous opportunity for us," said
Burrows of the recognition. "These guys
are great ambassadors for our school
anywhere we go."
Minister of Health Promotion Jim Watson also attended the event to present certificates to the Titans players and
coaches, including coach Richard Gallacher. "We're very proud of (Blessed) Mother Teresa (Catholic Secondary
School) and the students, who won the OFSAA championship," said Watson, who also serves as Minister
Responsible for Sport in Ontario. "This is something we should be doing more of: recognizing young people and
their accomplishments."
Like Burrows, Watson said the players serve both as role models in terms of encouraging others to get more
physically active and as great examples of what it means to go after your dreams and succeed.
Also eager to give the high school basketball champions a pat on the back was Balkissoon, who read a statement in
the Ontario legislature about the Titans' OFSAA success.
"I want to let them know the government's supporting them," said Balkissoon, adding encouraging his riding's
youth is one of his primary focuses as an MPP.
"You read a lot about negatives about young people but we need to support the positives. We need to uplift the
community."
It's a sentiment echoed by Titans' captain Craig Nelson.
"We're finally getting some good publicity. Normally we don't get recognition from anyone," said the Grade 12
student who is hoping to study business management in college. "All people hear about are the bad things, so this is
a big accomplishment."
Reflective of the high calibre of high school basketball being played locally, the Titans beat east Scarborough's
West Hill Warriors 71-49 in the OFSAA championship game.

Jump Into Fitness Workshop (half day Pr.Jr.Int.)
Introducing Dave
Grainger Jump Into fitness is a “hands on” PD program for staff and students that has been successfully
field-tested across Canada and the U.S. in schools, Boards of Education and Faculties of Education. The
program centers around the Activity, Sport, Art of Jump Rope/Rope Skipping/Acro-Roping/Nawatobi; and
has excellent potential to address concerns or issues relating to the implementation of Daily Physical Education (DPA) mandated by the Ministry of Education.
Lead-Up To Track And Field (half day Pr.Jr.Int.)
Fun, active, track related activities for all ages. Teachers will receive a variety of activities and ideas that
can be applied to regular physical education classes as well as to the development of track and field participants. This hands on active workshop will also include warm-up activities that are geared towards the
development of all involved. This is a great way to start off your track and field unit and interject some
variety. Some of the lead-up ideas can also be incorporated into your Daily Physical Education (DPA).

WORKPLACE
FATALITIES
NATIONAL DAY OF
MOURNING
FRIDAY,
APRIL 28, 2006
Each year, workplace accidents and occupational disease are responsible for a large number of workplace
fatalities among Canadian workers. On average, 3 Canadians die each workday due to workplace
accidents. Thousands suffer disabling injuries, many of them permanent causing enormous pain and
suffering for employees and their families.
In recognition of these ongoing losses and injuries, the Canadian Labour Congress and the Federal
Government have declared April 28, 2006 as “National Day of Mourning”.
To commemorate this day, workers throughout Canada are encouraged to observe a moment of silence to
remember those workers who died from workplace accidents or occupationally related diseases.
All teachers are encouraged to incorporate safety in their daily classroom
activities.
Secondary School Principals and teachers are encouraged to remind all
students who are working part-time or are looking for a summer job to work
safely and to ask questions in the workplace if they are unsure about a job
task.
Seven young workers between the ages of 14 and 24 died in Ontario workplaces during the summer of
2002.
If you have any questions, please call your TCDSB Occupational Health
and Safety Department, Corrado Maltese, 416-222-8282, ext. 2665

Jonah and the Whale
A Journey into Self Discovery Program
Four whale days
July 4th to 8th, 2006
Maryholme Retreat Centre
Lake Simcoe, Ontario, Canada
A summer learning experience for teachers, school support staff, parents and adults
interested in a creative and unique approach to understanding learning difficulties especially A(D)HD
A workshop/learning experience designed to assist people with A(D)HD and other learning difficulties, as well as
parents, teachers, support staff and practitioners who work in this field. Our goal is to help participants experience an
emotionally attuned environment which is essential for all of us to grow beyond our difficulties. A welcomed
combination of relaxation, scripture, spirituality renewal and a gentle therapeutic approach will help to attain this goal.
The Jonah story invites us to examine our own learning origins and emotional difficulties. Together as teachers,
parents and psychotherapists we enter into the process of sharing a deep reflective encounter, searching new
sources of hope, confidence, and self-esteem for the whole self in a collective effort to create a healthier
environment.
“So why should I not be concerned for Nineveh, a city in which there are more than 100 thousand people
who can not tell their right hand from their left hand?” (Jonah 4:11).
Come and Journey ‘hand in hand’ with us. Make a Self Discovery and enjoy a warm summer learning experience
at the Loretto Maryholme summer retreat place on beautiful Lake Simcoe.
Journey Facilitators: Daniel McDonald, Psychotherapist, Journey Team members, Institute for Studies in
Psychotherapy and Emotional Bodywork (I.S.P.E.B.), Special Education Facilitator: Pina Menniti, Assessment and
