Think summertime… Expand your living space
Hockey playoffs are just
about DONE - aren’t they??
Think Summertime ! ! The
sky has wrung out the last
bit of Spring rain, time to
expand your living space.
The ritual of bringing out
tables, chairs and umbrellas
inspires me to begin creating a welcoming atmosphere for relaxation and
dining outdoors.
CONSIDER
THESE IDEAS:
A STONE FIRE PIT
TABLE
would create a
wonderful ambiance - you
could even toast marshmallows. Pricing- $200-$300.
One that connects to your
gas line? prices are higher.
LIGHTING. Definitely
use Solar lights.
Be
generous
with them they
will provide a
beautiful glow
and the only
cost is your initial purchase.
Solar lights for
your plant pots
would be positively magical.
A package of 6
lights at a local
hardware store
is $40. What
about swagging
a chandelier in a
tree??
ICE BUCKETS. Stainless
steel
buckets from The
Green Room. I use them in
the garden, then last year
I discovered they make the
perfect ice bucket - I will be
buying more.
A SOUND SYSTEM.
Whether you have the staff
from Visual Sound install
outdoor speakers for you, or
you use a CD player, music
is the perfect accompaniment to cocktails and dining
Al fresco. Music soothes
the savage beast, however
your neighbours might not
agree to your music choices,
so be considerate when you
adjust the volume.
OUTDOOR CARPETS - I
have used them for several

years and couldn’t imagine
creating an outdoor space
without them. My favourite? the viscose ones loomed
in Belgium. These beauties
are available in traditional
or contemporary patterns in
jewel tones, browns, golds,
blacks and whites. BONUS
-They are washable - at
the end of the season, hose
them down, add soap, and
hose again. Hang over a
railing or spread them on
your lawn to dry, roll up and
store.
Have an old chesterfield?
drag it outside, cover it with
an inexpensive slipcover (I
found a washable one in
white for $100 ) add colourful toss cushions, an outdoor
rug, and a coffee table. Sigh
- pass the Sangria!
DRESS YOUR TABLE. A
twin sized sheet fits a rectangular table - 2 1/2 yards
of 54” fabric will also do the
job. Use cloth napkins as
they are “green”. Flowers??
why not?? use small liqueur
glasses or shot glasses as
vases and put one in front
of each place setting.
