UNWRAP THE GIFTS OF CORAL GABLES
CONGREGATIONAL UCC
For the past nineteen years, we have been
completing the required steps for ordination, which
includes a "call" from a local congregation. On
Sunday, December 4, on the recommendation of
the Church Council, Megan will offer a trial sermon
for the purpose of receiving such a "call" from Coral
Gables Congregational United Church of Christ.
Following the 11:00 a.m. service that morning,
members of the church will be asked to stay in the
sanctuary to vote on Megan and to receive her as
an ordained pastor. While she will continue to bring
leadership in the area of spiritual formation for us,
her new call as Associate Pastor means that she
will also share in the fullness of pastoral ministry
including preaching, celebrating the sacraments,
pastoral care, etc.
graced by the presence, the work, the commitment,
and the passion of Megan Korallis. The title she
now holds as Director of Spiritual Formation is just
one of the many titles she has had in her long
history with this congregation. Other titles have
included: Church Member, Minister to Children,
Camp Director, Director of Christian Education, and
Teaching Minister. We would now like to add one
more title, that of Associate Pastor. After nine and
a half years of balancing family, work, college, and
seminary studies, Megan is graduating from the
Florida Center for Theological Studies. We are so
proud of her accomplishments and her dedication
and faithfulness in following the call to become an
ordained minister of the United Church of Christ.
Also on Sunday, December 4, at 9:45 a.m., you
are invited to Havighorst Lounge to hear Megan's
understanding of ministry, her vision for the church,
and to ask her questions.
Upon receiving a "call," from this congregation,
Megan will come before an Ecclesiastical Council
on Sunday, January 8, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel.
This Ecclesiastical Council, which is held to
determine her fitness and readiness for ministry, is
composed of local United Church of Christ clergy
and church members. All members of CGCC-UCC
are encouraged to attend.
Upon a positive
affirmation from that body, we will then celebrate
Megan's ordination to the Christian ministry on
Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. in the
sanctuary.
It has been both an honor and a blessing to watch
Megan on her journey. And we are most grateful
that her journey will continue here with us.
After careful and prayerful deliberation, she has
agreed to continue on as one of our pastors upon

CGCC-UCC is joining with congregations across the country in Mission 1, a program of the
United Church of Christ that is focusing on food-related injustice for 11 days in November.
From, 11/1/11 – 11/11/11, we
will be fasting, feeding and
advocating for those who are
hungry in our world. The
schedule
includes
the
following:
11/01 – 11/11  Mission:
1 begins with a collection of
food items for Feeding South
Florida, a local foodbank that
provides over two million
pounds of food each month
to hungry South Floridians,
including children and the
elderly, the unemployed and
the
working
poor,
the
disabled, the homeless, and
victims of natural disasters,
illness and violence.
11/02  A class on how to
fast will be presented at 6:15
p.m. in Havighorst Lounge as
part of Church Night In.
11/06  A special worship
service, with guest speaker
Gregory Sims from Bread for
the World, will focus on
global hunger. Before the
service, bring food items for
Feeding South Florida. Following the service, join us for an advocacy letter-writing campaign for
Bread for the World.
11/08 Members and friends of the church will participate in a 24-hour fast, with money not used
for food being given to the Hunger Action Fund.
11/09 24-hour fast ends with worship at 5:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.
11/11  CGCC-UCC hosts a Regional Youth Event with the theme of Hunger Around the World.

Sunday, November 20  Thanks-Living Sunday.
Come ye thankful people come, and raise your songs of
harvest home!
Beautiful music, an overflowing
cornucopia, and words of gratitude and praise will mark
this service, as we celebrate Thanksgiving. Following
the 11:00 a.m. service, join us for a Thanksgiving pie
buffet. Please bring your favorite Thanksgiving pie to
share at the coffee hour. Drop it off in the kitchen on
your way in, and after worship enjoy a delicious piece (or
two) of pie.
Each Sunday morning, two worship
experiences are offered:
 9:00 a.m.  A more intimate and meditative
worship experience in Moye Chapel. Holy
Communion is celebrated weekly and music
is presented by one of our talented soloists.
 11:00 a.m.  We gather in the beauty of our
historic sanctuary to be engaged in
meaningful worship which feeds our spiritual
hungers. It is said that each week is a bit
different, but there is always something that
challenges and calls us to our authentic
selves.
Sunday, November 27 First Sunday of Advent. We
begin the beautiful journey to Christmas by lighting the
first of our Advent Wreath candles, the Candle of Hope.
The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated at
both services.
Sunday, December 4  The Second Sunday of
Advent. An important day in the life of this church as
our own Megan Korallis preaches a trial sermon, one of
the final steps in her long, but dedicated, journey to
become an ordained pastor of the United Church of
Christ. On this day, we will also light the Advent Candle
of Peace. Following our service, there will be a brief
congregational meeting for the purpose of calling Megan
as one of our associate pastors. This is a morning not to
be missed.
Sunday, November 6  Mission: 1 Sunday. ―
Fall
Back‖ and set your clocks one hour earlier so you don't
miss our Mission 1 Celebration. On this day, we join
with UCC congregations across the nation in learning
more about food-related injustice and how we can make
a difference in the lives of those in this community and
around the world who are hungry. Gregory Sims, the
Southeast Field Organizer of Bread for the World, an
organization dedicated to urging our nation‘s decision
makers to end hunger at home and abroad, will be our
preacher for the day.
Sunday, December 11  The Third Sunday of
Advent.
Beautiful music, inspiring words, and
meaningful prayers will compose this Sunday as we
draw closer to the celebration of Christmas by lighting
the Advent Candle of Joy. Following worship, the
Women‘s Fellowship will present its annual Holiday
Silver Tea. Mark your calendars for a Sunday which is
guaranteed to put you in
the spirit of the Advent
and Christmas season.
Later that day, get into the
holiday
mood
with
Christmas caroling to our
homebound folks. Meet at
the church at 3:00 p.m.
Sunday, November 13  Consecration Sunday. Join
us as we gather with grateful and generous hearts for
our annual Consecration Sunday, as we live out our
gratitude for all that has been given us. Our theme this
year is What's Cooking, as we seek the answer to the
question, ―
what is the recipe for a great church?" During
our morning worship, you are invited to bring your
pledges and offerings to support and shape the ministry
of our church in 2012. A celebration will follow with a
light luncheon on the Church Green using some great
church recipes.

Inter-Faith Thanksgiving Eve Service
Wednesday, November 23
Sunday, December 18  The Fourth Sunday of
Advent. We light the fourth candle in our Advent
Wreath, the Candle of Love. Rejoice and be glad as we
are reminded of God‘s great love for all people. Join us
following worship for a holiday open house at the home
of Pastor Laurie, Rick, and Ciana at 3131 De Soto
Boulevard (between the church and the Biltmore Hotel.)
Temple Judea will host the Coral Gables
communities of faith in
our long-standing
tradition of interfaith
worship and fellowship
as families gather to
celebrate the
Thanksgiving holiday.
Sunday, December 25  Christmas Day. Jesus is the
reason for the season, so take a break from your
Christmas morning festivities and join your church family
for a brief service of lessons and carols to truly remind
us what the day is all about. Don't worry about dressing
up, bring the kids in their pj‘s, wear yours if you dare,
and let's celebrate the joy of the day together.
The service is at 7:00 p.m., at Temple Judea,
5500 Granada Blvd, Coral Gables, and will
feature a broad range of music from the choirs
of our various traditions. The service will be led
by clergy (including our pastors) from the
participating congregations. A reception will
follow.
PLEASE NOTE, THERE WILL BE NO 9:00
A.M. SERVICE ON CHRISTMAS DAY OR
ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 1, NEW YEAR’S
DAY.
What is a Blue Christmas Service? For many of
us, Christmas is a bittersweet time of year. It is a time for
remembering those persons who have been a part of our
lives in the past, but who are now gone. On Monday
evening, December 19, you are invited to Moye Chapel
for a Blue Christmas Service. This quiet, meditative
service makes time for remembering, time for sharing our
hurting places with God, and time for preparing our
hearts for the coming of Christ. The service begins at
7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a quiet gathering
around a punch bowl and some cookies. The setting will
be lovely. The music will be beautiful. The only other
things we need are you, your memories, and your
prayers.

ECUMENICAL CHRISTMAS EVE WORSHIP
11:00 a.m. at Miami Temple Seventh-day Adventist
This Christmas Eve, members of our Chancel Choir and choir members from the Miami Temple
Seventh-day Adventist, where our soloist Brandon Mowry is the music director, will participate in each
other‘s Christmas Eve Services. Many will remember last Palm Sunday, when our two choirs combined
for festive music and worship. Because Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday this year, and because
Saturday morning is the regular worship time for Seventh-day Adventist congregations, we will have a
day of Christmas Eve celebrations from two different faith perspectives. Help us celebrate this
combined worship experience by joining us at 11:00 a.m. at 9175 SW 44th Street, Miami FL, 33165, and
at our own Christmas Eve services later that evening.
5:30 P.M. FAMILY SERVICE
Led by our Children and Youth Choirs
Presents are under the tree, Christmas treats are plentiful, sparkling lights are everywhere, and the kids
can barely contain their excitement. Join us for this special family service, where our children can move,
jump, be joyful, and celebrate. No sitting still here, and no stern "hush" required. Just pure Christmas
spirit as we celebrate the good news that baby Jesus is born again in our hearts. Following the service,
everyone is invited to the courtyard for a live nativity scene with a petting zoo and lots of Christmas
cookies.
PRE-SERVICE HOLIDAY MUSIC CONCERT
7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
Candlelight Worship
8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
Our Christmas Eve worship has become a tradition, not only for our own church family, but for many in
our community. Be with us as the glow of luminaries around the church lights the way to a glorious
celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ in our beautifully decorated historic sanctuary. Experience spiritfilled worship, the singing of festive carols, moving choral and instrumental music, the telling of the
nativity story through scripture and poetry, and, of course, the traditional lighting of candles during the
singing of ―
Silent Night.‖ Nowhere are church and home, heaven and earth so wedded together as on
Christmas Eve. We look forward to greeting you and worshipping with you on this most Holy Night.

WHAT‘S COOKING AT CGCC-UCC?
"Give and it will be given you. A good measure, pressed down,
shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap,
for the measure you give will be the measure you get back."
~ Luke 6:38
We know we have some great cooks here at the
church. Our potluck tables are always laden with
delicious dishes lovingly prepared from favorite
recipes for the enjoyment of all. Likewise, each
week, this church offers a feast of good things to
nourish and nurture us and others. Throughout this
season of stewardship, we will be visited by some
chefs who know good recipes, such as Rachel Ray,
Julia Childs, Martha Stewart, Bobby Flay, and the
Swedish Chef, who will also remind us of the
ingredients for a faithful, fulfilling, and exciting
church.
Of course, we all know, that such a recipe begins
with a good measure of generosity so that all can
fill their hunger for spiritual growth, justice,
community, worship, and hope. So in their own
humorous and fun way, our stewardship team this
year is asking the very serious question, ―
Will we
have all the ingredients it takes for a great church if
we don’t make our budget for 2012?” Will the
Board of Trustees and its work tending to our
beautiful and historic building continue? Will the
Board of Christian Education and its ministry of
nurturing and growing the faith of young and old
alike be possible? What about our Board for
Justice and Witness and its commitment to caring
for the hurting, the disenfranchised, the
impoverished, and the oppressed? Or what about
our Board for Congregational Life and its dedication
to offering meaningful worship, pastoral care, and
fellowship opportunities?
A Heavenly Julia Childs, who looks peculiarly like
Chuck Bryant, brings us a recipe for a great church.
and invitations about giving and sharing so that the
ministry of this church will continue in all its
fullness. Listen to the Witnessing Stewards, music,
and prayers that will support you in your decision
making. Then mark your calendars for
Consecration Sunday, November 13, when we
will dedicate our pledges of financial support as
part of a great celebration. For, as the Gospel of
Luke says, "the measure you give will be the
In early November, you will be asked, once again,
to consider the realities of our church budget for
2012, and to prayerfully consider what you will
pledge to the 2012 budget of Coral Gables
Congregational United Church of Christ. Watch for
a booklet, letters, lots of other helpful information
measure you get back."

often misunderstood, and always challenging stories can speak to us today. Join us for this three-part
series led by Pastor Laurie.
DECEMBER 4  Join us for a very special opportunity to hear the faith journey of Megan Korallis, which
has led to this morning when she will present a trial sermon at the 11:00 a.m. service for the purpose of
being called as an Associate Pastor of this congregation.
CALLED TO CARE…
"BEAR ONE ANOTHER'S BURDENS…”- GALATIANS 6:2
The Called to Care Team is looking for a few compassionate, caring folks who would like
to share a little time encouraging, helping, and assisting others in our church family. A
training session will be held in November. If you are interested in learning more about
Called to Care or would like to volunteer, please contact Maria Anderson, the Called to
Care Coordinator at [email protected] or 305.448.7421, x122.
NEEDED: BUS DRIVERS
Our bright red and white shuttle bus is a vital part of our ministry.
To expand our transportation offerings for ministry, we need more
drivers.
We help drivers acquire a Florida Class C Commercial Driver‘s
License, which involves passing a written test and a driving skills
test. We provide you with online tutorial programs for the written
test, take you to the Florida DMV for your driving test, and pay all
fees involved in getting licensed. Please contact Ron Morgan at
[email protected] for more information if you are interested in
becoming one of our drivers.
Many thanks to Maria Márquez-Sterling for many of the pictures that you see in this Tidings.
Are you interested in deepening your faith? Would
you like to be a part of some smaller groups devoted to
spiritual growth?
Then Mystic Monday is for you!
Join us each Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. as we
explore faith in a variety of ways. Childcare is available by
contacting Megan Korallis at 305.448.7421 x119.
First Mondays (November 7 and December 5) – Good Grief
Can grief ever be good? Will life ever be joyous again? Does the lump in my throat
ever go away? Each of us experiences grief at some time in our lives, most likely,
multiple times. While it is a universal experience, it is also a unique one. There is no
specific process, no healing formula, no right way to manage grief. However, there
are healthy, more effective ways to cope. The support and encouragement of others
is one such way. Join us for these sessions to learn ways of coping, to feel the
support of others, and to know that you are not alone in your grief. Hosted by the
Called to Care Committee. Meetings in Moye Chapel.
Second Mondays November 14 and December 12) - Prayer Shawl Ministry
We gather to create beautiful prayer shawls to share with members of our church family who are ill or grieving,
or maybe even celebrating a special event in their life, like the birth of a child, or a significant birthday. You do
not have to know how to knit or crochet – someone will teach you. If you are looking for a ministry of prayer
and care for others, this may be it. Come and help wrap someone in God‘s love by creating a beautiful prayer
shawl. The teapot will be on in Moye Chapel. Note: The December 12 gathering
will be held at the home of Pastor Laurie.
Third Monday (November 21) – Theology on Tap
Join Pastor Laurie over a frosty one for casual conversation about life, faith, culture,
and theology through a biblical lens. We meet at Duffy‘s Tavern, 2108 SW 57 Avenue,
Miami. Please note that Duffy's does not take credit cards.
Fourth Monday (November 28) – Praise-Prayer-and Potluck.
* Note: Dinner begins at 6:30.
Join us for the opportunity to get to know your church family better and to share food
and faith together. Once a month, we gather to hear the faith journey of one of our
members as we join around the supper table. In November, we are pleased to hear from Coleen Atkins, Ph.D.,
an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami, Miller School of
Medicine. If you are able, bring a dish to share. Drinks and tableware will be provided. Be prepared for a rich
and rewarding evening in your community of faith. As always, childcare will be provided.
Please note: On Monday evening, December 19, a special Blue Christmas service wil be held
at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel for those who are finding it hard to be joyous this holiday season.

At the heart of the Torah, and attributed to Moses himself, the book of Leviticus is arguably the most misunderstood of
Jewish Scriptures among Christians. Some today take limiting and even distorting translations of this ancient text
literally, but selectively, as underpinning ideological resistance to cultural change. Others dismiss it altogether as a relic
of an ancient tribal and ceremonial world with little to say to our postmodern human condition. Earlier generations of
Christians, however, followed the Jewish ethos in understanding the text liturgically and communally, seeing a rich world
of symbol and mythos truth underneath its often illusive surface. In this ecumenical ‗revisitation‘ of Leviticus, we will
explore both ancient and modern insights into this complex work, drawn from both Jewish and Christian sources. Key
elements of liturgy, purity and justice will be developed and highlighted toward a reclaiming of this book of Moses for
diverse, progressive Christians in an age of social struggle and evolution.
As a final project, participants will create a ‗Leviticus Alive‘ mission statement, collectively identifying a set of creative,
life-giving and context-specific applications of this holy book revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike.

WEDNESDAY EVENING ADVENT BIBLE STUDY
Writing a Modern Day Psalm
November 30, December 7 & 14
If you write and speak Spanish, this class promises to spark your creativity in one of the most sacred and
studied biblical genres, the Psalms. All speakers of Spanish are invited to a three-part series with Pastor
Guillermo, to write a modern day psalm.
Dios.
AUTUMN BOOK EXCHANGE
Sunday, November 27
after the 11:00 a.m. Service
THE SEASON OF ADVENT
Bring in the books you have
already read and exchange them
so you are sure to have plenty to
read on these cool fall evenings.
Bring in toddler, children, teen,
young adult or adult aged books -- fiction,
non fiction, required reading, school books. All
books are welcome. Drop your books off in the
Fellowship Hall on your way into church on
November 27 and then bring the whole family after
church to browse the book tables.
Sunday, November 27,
marks the beginning of the
Advent season, a time when
we prepare ourselves for the
birth of Christ. Advent is a
beautiful season, for it is the
time of year when we
decorate the church for
Christmas, and have many of
those Christmas-like festivities leading up to
Christmas Eve. For the last few years, we have
been decorating the Christmas tree and the
different gathering spaces of the church on that first
week. Volunteers are always needed, for we know
that many hands make the load light. We need help
with the Christmas tree delivery, erecting and
securing it, as well as stringing lights on it. We also
need help with the hanging of wreaths and
garlands.
KEEP IN TOUCH
Once a week or so, Pastor Laurie e-mails a
pastoral letter, Laurie’s Lines, to all members and
friends, filling them in on the week‘s events, any
special concerns that have arisen, and general
church business. If you would like to be included,
please contact Mark Hart at [email protected]
or sign up online at www.mycgcc.org. If you have
signed up and are not receiving it, please also let
Mark know.
So, if you have the Advent spirit, and you might be
interested in helping out, please contact Pastor
Guillermo at [email protected].

9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. in the Church Library
All women, regardless of age, are invited to join in this relaxed and easygoing group with no rules, no dues, no officers. We are just women
gathering together to hear each other‘s stories, provide support and
encouragement, and to occasionally learn something. A continental
breakfast is provided, so roll out of bed, throw on your jeans, and be with
some sisters on the journey.
In November, our theme will be, ―T
he Women of the Nativity,‖ as, over a
light breakfast, we look at the stories of Mary and Elizabeth. Our
December meeting will be at the home of Pastor Laurie for our annual festive holiday gathering.
Childcare is always available by contacting Megan Korallis at [email protected].
FRIENDS OF DOROTHY CHRISTMAS PARTY
All GLBTQ members and friends and their allies are invited to a
holiday potluck party on Saturday, December 10, from 7:00 p.m. –
10:00 p.m. at the home of David Dangler and Michael Flegel in
Pembroke Pines.
We understand that their home is a perfect holiday party site with decorated trees in every room,
creating a virtual Christmas wonderland.
If you would like to travel together, the shuttle bus will leave the church parking lot at 6:30 p.m.
returning at 10:30 p.m. Please bring a dish to share and join us for what will be a great evening of
fun, festivity, and food.

CHRISTMAS OUTING
YOUNG ADULTS GROUP
As young adults, our lives are ever changing. However,
the church is the one place we can always call home—
the place that nurtures our spiritual needs, our
community, and our family. Rather than allowing others
to write our future for us, we believe it is up to us to
make the future our own. The teachings of Christ are
inspiring us to take action, heal societal wounds, be
socially conscious, and take a stand against
injustice. For us, as the Social Networking Generation,
the UCC is a movement that is in-tune with God‘s still
speaking voice. It is up to us to show all young people
that there is a place where they can truly make a
difference in their lives, their community, and their world
through service.

The January term is M135A –

course work done on-line via Blackboard.

CGCC-UCC is blessed by the generosity of its members, past and present, and its boards and staff
who cautiously manage spending. The Legacy Fund was established in 1985 through a number of
significant gifts and bequests, and has been used over the years to fund major capital projects and
acquisitions, such as the refurbishment of the Arts and Education Wing and the purchase of adjoining
properties such as the current Parsonage, Wellness Center, and vacant lots.
The Legacy Fund also helps pay for CGCC‘s extensive programs, as depicted in the chart below.
Our financial advisors recommend that we spend no more than 5% of the Legacy Fund each year to
ensure its continuity. The

JUSTICE AND WITNESS
Haiti Mission at Caye Jacmel
By Guillermo Márquez-Sterling
Over the Labor Day Weekend, a group of nine people went
to Haiti for a mission experience with the Haitian American
Nurses Association (HANA) in the small coastal town of
Caye Jacmel. This was my ninth trip to Haiti, the third trip
after the earthquake. Traveling with me were DeCarla
McBean, Rosa Rodriguez, Deborah Paris, Carol Krech,
Leonie Hermantin, Ayo Jolibois, Carlos Márquez-Sterling
and Jorge Clavijo.
Although we went with bags full of gifts for the Haitian
people, and envelopes full of grants for the organizations,
Haitians in Caye Jacmel waiting to be seen by the
we received more than we gave. We returned with the
HANA Medical Mission Team. Over 800 people
smiles and beautiful energy of the Haitian people within us.
received medical attention on that weekend.
We came back with the deepening realization of how
privileged we are to live in the United States. We returned
with the broadening awareness of how God‘s Spirit is at work in Haiti. Each of us had our own set of
experiences with the Haitian people. I was proud of Carlos and Ayo (my son and Leonie‘s daughter), who
never shied away from interacting with the locals. I was moved by Deborah, Carol, Rosa and DeCarla and their
dedication to service. And I was, as always, deeply touched by the children of Haiti, who manage to smile,
play, and love, despite the limitations of their community.
This mission experience with HANA helped us to re-affirm our philosophy and methodology for humanitarian
assistance. In future trips, we will return to our established partners in mission: HELP, ProDev and the Lambi
Fund. And, as always, we look forward to the support of the broader Coral Gables community and
congregation. Thank you for your constant encouragement to reach out to Haiti, where we find God is still
speaking.
OUR CHURCH'S WIDER MISSION CHILI-COOK-OFF
In October, we had our first annual OCWM Chili Cook-Off, and it was a lot of fun.
There was pork, beef, sausage, two different kinds of vegan, and hot and mild chili.
We had three winners in the Chili Cook-Off. The winner of the popular vote was
JOSEF SPENCER. There were two Fire Fighters Favorites, JAN ROELOFS, with
her Mild Chili, and the dynamic duo of PETER KNEZEVICH and JOHN GRAHAM
with Mean Green Chili. Congratulations to everyone who participated. The Chili
Cook-Off raised $476 for OCWM–a fund of the United Church of Christ that provides
basic support for UCC churches and the national ministries to teach, nurture, and
equip our churches to meet the needs of their communities.

LET'S TALK JUSTICE
CIRCLES OF DIALOGUE
This past October, the Board of Justice and Witness offered four opportunities for people to gather in a home, enjoy some
appetizers, and socialize with members of our church community. After all the laughter and talk, a presentation about
economic justice was given with an interactive game. Then the dialogue began.
Some of the insights were:
1. The church is already engaged in a lot of justice work; but it would be great if more members of the church were
participating in these projects.
2. The church is a participating member of PACT, which is a great vehicle for us to promote economic justice.
3. The church should get involved in Occupy Miami.
Following these gatherings, an Economic Justice Task Force was formed. Many of the participants are looking forward to
the ministries and programs that will emerge from this task force in 2012.
Economic Justice (EJ) is a broad issue that affects many aspects of our lives, yet as followers of Christ, we are called to
stand up to any and all injustices for the benefit of all people. EJ seeks to address the issues of poverty, hunger and
inequality, while working to bring about the systemic change that eliminates this injustice. It is concerned with the fair and
proper distribution of resources so that everyone can enjoy God‘s creation. These resources include livable land, clean
water, jobs, health benefits, and food. Knowing that people do not want charity, but rather fair compensation for work
done, economic justice is not to be confused with ministries of mercy or charity.
In the month of November we are having four more opportunities for this dialogue. When this publication reaches your
home, we may have these events near capacity. But if you are interested in participating in these dialogues, contact Noel
Cleland at [email protected]. We will try to squeeze you in.

IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Sponsoring Families for Christmas
Informational Meeting, Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 6:15 p.m.
The migrant farm working families of South Dade have been hit hard by
this recession. The poverty-related illnesses that run through this
community are many. MUJER, an organization dedicated to ending
domestic violence in the migrant farm working community, has been
partnering with CGCC for many years. Together, we have identified
families that suffer from economic hardship, domestic violence and other
poverty related ills have created a wish list of items that would make
their life easier and their Christmas enjoyable.
Because we are reaching out to families that live within one hour of our
church, and because their life should be treated with respect and confidentiality, we cannot publish their wish lists in this
newsletter. However, if you wish to participate in this outreach, we invite you to attend an informational meeting. For more
information, contact Pastor Guillermo at 305.448.7421 x117, or [email protected].

The youth at Coral Gables Congregational UCC
are having fun and staying busy while deepening
their faith. During the last few months, we served
the wider community during a micro-mission trip to
North Miami, helped the environment by
participating at the Miami-Dade Coastal Clean-up
in September, and attended the Regional Fall
Retreat.
On November 11, we are inviting youth from the
South East Florida Region to our Mission 1
countdown. This educational Youth Summit and
mini-retreat will include a food drive, a poverty
meal, a one-night sleepover, reflection time, and a
countdown celebration. Youth registration forms
are available on our website. Adult volunteers are
needed for the evening of November 11 through
the morning of November 12. Please contribute
your time to our youth program by volunteering to help during this overnight event. Please contact Beth Reyes
at [email protected] to volunteer.
During the month of November, high school youth are completing a sixpart workshop on Christian activism. At the end of the six- week course
led by Pastor Guillermo, the youth will be equipped to put their faith into
practice by designing their own service project. November will also be a
month for summer trip planning. The youth are enthusiastic about
attending the National Youth Event (NYE) during the week of July 8.
Registration, deposits, and fund-raising will be part of the planning

YOUNG MUSICIANS’ ORCHESTRAS &
ALL-STAR JAZZ ENSEMBLE IN FULL
SWING!
The Young Musicians‘ Junior, Intermediate and Advanced
Orchestras and ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble began in August.
Children, ages 8-18, from throughout Miami-Dade and
Broward Counties come together each Thursday in the Coral
Gables Congregational Church Arts & Education Wing to explore
music in one of four CGCC Community Arts Program
Ensembles: The Young Musicians‘ Junior, Intermediate and
Advanced Orchestras and the ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble.
Young Musicians‘ Junior, Intermediate and Advanced Orchestra members learn the mechanics of, and the techniques for,
preparing a broad spectrum of repertoire (classical, jazz and contemporary, including commissioned works). Rehearsals
develop the best music-making decisions within the broad spectrum of repertoire presented. This approach fosters solid
technique, confidence, a feel for various music styles, and the importance of team work for exceptional ensemble and
individual growth. Advanced Orchestra members further develop greater insights into the professional music world
through the more intricate challenges of advanced literature, analysis,
technique and ensemble work. The Young Musicians‘ ALL-STAR Jazz
Ensemble provides serious and studying jazz students, ages 14
through 18, exposure and development within a valuable network of
other career-minded jazz musicians. Students sharpen skills in sight
reading, improv, rhythm, performance practice and studio recording,
while working on jazz repertoire that spans the standards to newlycomposed works. All weekly rehearsals form the basis for coaching
sessions, team engagement and an average of four public
st
performances to develop complete musicians in the 21 century.
This year‘s performance plans include a 4:00 p.m., Sunday, December
18 Overtown Holiday Spectacular! (back by popular demand!), a
Sunday, February 5 Family Concert as part of Vizcaya‘s Music at
Vizcaya series, an Adrienne Arsht Center project, a WDNA live, one-hour radio show, a DVD filming for the Mark
O‘Connor string methods series, Friday evening Jazz Jams, another CAP Records release and more!
If you, or someone you know, is interested in joining, we‘d love to hear from them! And now, it‘s easier than ever. Visit
www.CommunityArtsProgram.org; view the prerequisites and requirements. Then, fill out the online application and

CGCC CAP Young Musicians’ Orchestras
Chosen by Grammy-Award Winner Mark O’Connor
Grammy-Award winning violinist, composer and pedagogue, Mark O‘Connor--well
known for, among his other recordings, "Appalachian Journey," with Yo-Yo Ma, Allison
Krause and James Taylor – which won the Grammy for Best Classical Crossover
Album, has chosen the CGCC Community Arts Program (CAP) Young Musicians‘
Chamber Ensemble as the ―
Spokes ensemble‖ for his O’Connor Orchestra Method
Books. Mark‘s ground-breaking method series has been hailed by teachers from across
the country as filling a significant gap in classical music education. Members of the
CGCC CAP Junior & Intermediate Orchestras have just completed filming the DVD to
be used nationwide (and worldwide through YouTube promos) in Mark‘s teachertraining workshops. The release proudly displays the Coral Gables Congregational
United Church of Christ Community Arts Program name and logo.

ANNOUNCING:
www.mycgcc.org
Welcome to www.mycgcc.org and the new life of our church website.
At General Synod 28 in Tampa this past summer, as we were leaving
the Florida Conference Banquet in our red “out of the box” t-shirts, we
were stopped by several people who said, “You obviously have a very
vibrant church, and you have one of the best UCC websites we’ve
seen.” A UCC staff member from the national setting told us that when
he talks to UCC churches seeking to increase the power of their media
ministry, he refers them to the CGCC-UCC website as a model and
template. From other folks around the country, we have been told
that our website reflects our values of extravagant hospitality and
impassioned outreach and service.
With the rapidly changing face of social media and communication, we set out to make our four-year-old website more
current, while maintaining its appeal and power as an evangelism and outreach tool. Last July, Ron Buford, the architect
and engineer of the UCC’s national God is Still Speaking campaign, worked with us to increase the connection and
branding to the national setting, while capturing and retaining the unique flavor of CGCC. All revisions were done with
continuous input from our pastors and with input from all program staff members.
Our updated website has already gone through many revisions, and will undoubtedly continue to be a work in progress.
While the old website required us to out-source all design changes, our new site allows all updates to be made in-house,
resulting in considerable savings of money, and giving us the ability to have the website reflect the ever-evolving face of
our church’s ministries.
We invite you to explore our fresh look at www.mycgcc.org, which is still accessible through the former website address
at www.coralgablescongregational.org. You will be greeted with our We Are Family video and by the first round of the
“out of the box” people, who not only greet you with smiling faces, but with spoken testimonies about their love for our
church. New faces and testimonies will be added monthly. Pull-down menus at the top of the page and a “search box”
give you access to all our ministries in one quick-find location. An Upcoming Events calendar allows you to quickly see a
week at a glance. You will find colorful links to our Community Arts Program, Early Childhood Center, Fair Trade shop,
and Wedding and Holy Union ministry and also to Eden Seminary. Direct access is provided to our Facebook and
Twitter pages, and to our new Media Center, which houses all our videos. A special application for smart phones gives
you basic information in a concise, inviting format.
In a world where social media is transforming the world
of communication, and as a congregation of the United
Church of Christ where we believe that God is Still
Speaking, current and future changes to our media
ministry are designed to bring the good news of CGCCUCC to an ever widening circle of people who hunger
for the ministries we have all come to love. We believe
God can blow the lid off any box, unfold it, and turn it
into a dance floor. Through our media ministry and our
own personal outreach and welcome, our dream is that
more and more people will find their way to the place
where no matter who they are, or where they are on their faith journeys, they will find a spiritual home with us here at
CGCC-UCC.

SO, JUST WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHEN YOU SAY 'GOD'?
A Lecture Series with Gretta Vosper
Named one of 2009‘s Most Compelling Women in Canada by More Magazine,
Gretta Vosper has been in the spotlight since founding the Canadian Centre for
Progressive Christianity in 2004. Her national bestselling book, With or Without
God: Why the Way We Live is More Important than What We Believe, featured in
the cover article of Maclean’s magazine‘s 2008 Easter edition, challenges the
clergy‘s silence on contemporary scholarship. She argues that people need to
know the Bible is not the authoritative word of God for all time. Met with both
acclaim and vitriol by those inside and outside the church, With or Without God
was listed on Amazon‘s Top 25 Books that Caused a Commotion. Gretta calls the
church to create communities grounded in values that promote the wellbeing of
all life on the planet, rather than in indefensible doctrinal beliefs.
