LLV CLASS OF 2014
LINA BICKEL
Yearbook Committee / Photographer
A lifelong resident of Lompoc and a newly promoted manager for
the Department of Social Services, Lina found that she learned
many new things about her hometown through LLV. She looks forward to teaching a new generation of Lompocans (her grandchildren!) all about the interesting place they call home.
 Most Likely To be found cheering on the sidelines of a Lompoc
youth sporting event or dance recital.
PHIL BOORTZ

A Financial Advisor with Edward Jones with an office located in
Vandenberg Village, Phil is a Rotary member and community
service is important to him. A private pilot, Phil would like to
build an airplane someday.
 Most Likely To resolve the national debt problem.
GOLDA ESCALANTE
Yearbook Photographer
A native of the Philippines, Golda is the General Manager of the
only Hilton hotel in Lompoc— Embassy Suites, owned and managed by WCG Hotels. Born with a microphone in her hand,
Golda was on air as a newscaster and a disc jockey at a radio
music station prior to joining the hospitality industry. A passionate amateur chef, a checklist ninja, technically savvy and internet geek, Golda is a strategist and an explorer.
 Most Likely To be the first to know about a secret VAFB
launch.
CAROL NEWBERRY
Yearbook Committee Chair
Executive Administrator at DenMat, Carol is using her
LLV experience and network to involve the company in
community events and to encourage fellow employees to
embrace the local community. She loves gardening, cycling and traveling by Harley with her husband.
 Most Likely To open an organic lettuce stand at the
Lompoc Farmer’s Market.

JONATHAN OLDROYD
Jonathan is President and CEO of Oldroyd Asset Management,
a financial consulting company located in Lompoc. He is an Investment Committee Member of the Lompoc Hospital District
Foundation. Jonathan would like to attract more tourists to
Lompoc, plant more trees, and to grow the local organic food
industry.
 Most Likely to Make Lompoc Green
JENELLE OSBORNE
Owner of Orijenell Organizer, a professional organizing and
event planning company, Jenelle is a member of the City of
Lompoc’s Economic Development Committee (EDC) and the
Firestone Walker 805 Criterium Planning Committee. As
Chair of the EDC, Jenelle envisions Lompoc embracing its pioneer heritage while launching into the 21st Century with new
frontiers in business, community and government.

CECILIA RAMOS
Cecilia is a Lompoc native and follows in her two sister’s LLV footsteps. As a Program Advisor for the University of California’s Education Abroad Program, Cecilia gets to blend her two passions:
Education and International Travel with students looking to experience Latin America. When not serving on the Economic Development Committee, CAPA, or as a mentor, Cecilia likes to cook,
bake, and take short runs and long naps.
 Most Likely To be related to someone in a future LLV Class.

DONATO RICCI
A native of Catania, Italy, Donato has lived in Lompoc for 14
years. He is Member Information Systems Manager at CoastHills
Federal Credit Union. Donato enjoys traveling and spending time
with his family. He is a big soccer fan and a volunteer as a member of the Finance Committee at his church.
 Most Likely To be spotted with his family dressed in matching attire
JULIE SCHNERINGER
NASA Engineer and frequent wine consumer, Julie has lived in
Lompoc for almost 16 years and has immersed herself in the
community. She enjoys reading, music and sitting in front of
Southside Coffee interacting with the townspeople.

COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT DAY
December 13, 2013
This day showed us the rich history of the Lompoc Valley with tours of the Lompoc Museum,
Artesia School and McKay-Fabing-Spanne House, as well as the cultural side with visits to Art
Alley, the Cypress Art Gallery, and the Lompoc Public Library.

January 17, 2014
Panel Discussion with AMR Operations Manager Dave Schierman, Fire Chief Kurt Latipow and
Police Captain Donald Deming, followed by Carol’s Life Story and a visit to the Lompoc P.D.
Detective White spoke
with us about drugs in the
community and Hank
wowed us with his drug
sniffing talents.
A visit to Fire Station #1
gave us an inside look at
a day in the life of a
fireman, and we all took
a turn down the slide!

to be among the first to
visit the brand new Allan
Hancock Public Safety
Training Complex and to
see the first class of future
police officers in training.

MID-YEAR RETREAT
February 7, 2014
Our Mid-Year Retreat was held at the beautiful
Boat House on Vandenberg AFB. The peaceful
setting and unmatched beauty helped us to
select a Class Project and to sign up Topic Day
Planners for next years’ class.
Class Project: A fundraiser to support the
Lompoc Library Literacy Program. Class
members sold tickets at $10 each to win:
1st Prize—Apple iPad Air
2nd Prize—Kindle Whitepaper E-reader
3rd Prize—$100 Amazon.com Gift Card

EDUCATION DAY
February 21, 2014
The day began at the Boys & Girls Club with Phil’s Life Story, followed by a Speaker Panel with Dena Kern, Director
of the Club, Rachel Hom, Volunteer Program Coordinator
and Sid Haro, LUSD Assistant Superindent.
Lompoc High School welcomed
us with an introduction to
campus clubs, a tour of their
Computer App Class, Robotics
Program, Auto Shop, Math Lab
and a delicious lunch!
Phil and Carol watched a
Robotics demonstration.
Donato tried out the
battery operated car.

CHAMPIONS OF THE FUTURE
We toured and learned about Manzanita Charter
School and how it differs from public schools.
At Cabrillo High School we toured the Aquarium
and Horticulture Departments, including their
vineyard and learned about an Auto Shop
competition.

Community Center and then learned about Lompoc’s gem of an Aquatic Center.

April 18, 2014

The 30th Space Wing Mission Brief and a leadership session with
30th Operations Group Commander, Colonel Del Rosario was
followed by a tour and demonstration of the Western Range
Operations Control Center. Donato gave his Life Story and then we
toured the SpaceX Launch Control Center and drove to the SpaceX
and United Launch Alliance (ULA)
launch complexes.

May 9, 2014

DenMat showed us how
they make their dental
and lab products.
Imerys gave us a tour of their mine and production
facilities, and we drew a winner for our Class Project
drawing.
