Dear Readers
After this long spiral of
recession, the economy
seems to recover, helping
the enterprises to a higher
order volume and thus to a
certain stability. Investments
are done again, although
not still to the desired extent,
but a clear improvement is
already noticeable.
In this issue of the Stöcklin
News you will come across
a great variety of topics.
At the beginning of the year we could put online our new
website. With this website we offer the interested visitor the
chance to get an ample insight into Stöcklin and our
products. The clear design allows the visitor a fast navigation through the extensive website.
Additionally we are proud to present you our new simulation software and the tremendous advantage which this tool
produces for our customers and us. This working instrument
enables us to support our customers in any phase of the life
cycle of a plant due to emulation or simulation. Read more
on page 3.
In the area of fork lift trucks there are also a lot of news.
So, we had the opportunity to spend a fabulous day with
our longstanding distributor NHK and drink to our 20-year
partnership. Just such dealers as Mr. Kurt Hartmann of
NHK are of great importance for our company. They
represent us in the area of fork lift trucks outside Switzerland contributing to the positive image of our company.
Furthermore we lanced a new column, „Codes of conduct
with Mr. Stacker“. This column shall remind us all that if you
want to enjoy a machine for a long time, you need to keep
certain codes of conduct.
We do not only think of our future, but also of our children‘s
future. Besides an environment-friendly powder coating
and our products with energy efficient design, we participated in the Swiss National Future Day and invited our
employees children, so they could form an impression of
possible jobs suiting them within the Stöcklin company.
Aside from questions whether I have always desired to
become a boss and which has been the worst-case error
of an employee, the children could form a general idea
of the working routine. A successful day which in some
children also contributed to know what they would not like
to be in the future.
Now I hope you enjoy reading the latest issue of Stöcklin
News and will be glad to see you in person at one of the
many events we attend this year.

The WinMOD Test Workstation
To save costs and increase efficiency - these are the targets to act
successfully on the market. To take these requirements into account,
we at Stöcklin decided to work with a new system which enables
us to execute real-time tests before the system has been installed
in place and thus detect and solve possible sources of error.
This procedure enables us on the one hand
to commission the system within less time
and on the other hand it provides us with the
security that all components correspondent
exactly to the performance requirements of
the customer.
WinMOD is a tool that simulates the real
components of machines and plants and joins
them in a test environment with the customer‘s
software and the locally installed control systems. This way we are able to simulate a mirror of our planned plants and the behavior of
our systems, in real time and In House.
These editing and runtime platforms for
real time simulations are linked via a graphical user interface with high-quality behavior
simulations.

reducing the needed time to a minimum.
Given the modularity of the system and the
test environment, plants of any size may be
simulated and tested. Likewise, with this
system we can divide projects in phases or
add extensions to existing plants.

Another application of WinMOD is during
the software development. Due to the high
versatility of application we are able to test
new software concepts or improvements fast
and reliably. Thus, a progressive software
check is possible in all phases of the software
development. This tool enables us to create process flows for the quality assurance of
our software solutions. Such environments can
also serve to coordinate the reached software
versions between the customer and Stöcklin.

DIFFERENT APPLICATION RANGES OFFERS
SECURITY
At the moment WinMOD is used at
Stöcklin in different phases of the project, from
checking the software for the system to the
virtual training of the customer.
The projects realized with WinMOD are
tested in our factory before the building phase. The tests of the control system makes the
work on site easier, reducing the commissioning times considerably. Critical machine and
system states may be adjusted and tested
without any risk for the real plant. This gives
security on the side of the customer and of
Stöcklin.
he Test with WinMOD not only offers a
complete check of the plant at the control
experts in Project Planning design carefully each single plant, in order to present the
customer the solution which represents the
biggest profit for his company. For very
complex systems we already use in the planning phase other simulation tools like Tarakos
and AutoMOD. These tools enable us to test
the warehouse layout and determine whether
the complete system will meet the needs of the
customer today and in future. Thus, we can
guarantee that we will find and implement the
best solution for our customer.
With real-time simulations, advantages for
both, the customer and Stöcklin, arises.
The customer as well as Stöcklin can benefit
from a vast time reduction and a safe planning
of the commissioning phase.
With the In-House Tests we could achieve
convincing results in the past and improve still
further the usually high software quality, by
detecting and eliminating arising error sources
already in our factory. This way we can ensure
a high availability at the customer‘s site from
the beginning. So, WinMOD really saves
money and increases the competitiveness.
Another benefit for our customers is in the
future. If the plant‘s performance does not
longer come up with the requirements of the
operating company, then our expert team
will draw up performance-increasing measures, adapting the complete system to the new
needs. Afterwards we can test these adaptations with WinMOD in a real environment
without interfering in the existing plant, which
will save the customer unnecessary downtimes.
With WinMOD we can offer our customers a reliable system for the testing of
performance extensions. That way our customer has the security to be optimally attended
in all phases in the life cycle of an automated
plant.
With WinMOD Stöcklin has invested in a
system that yields a perceptible and above
level, but also offers a test environment for all measurable profit to all parties. Today we

situation has great advantages. The material
flow computer is able to test and optimize simultaneously to the completion of the system
in the customer‘s plant its interfaces with the
control and its components in real-time, and
to remove potentially occurring errors in the
office. WinMOD has not only established as
a test platform at Stöcklin, but also
offers the customer training opportunities for

Warehouse and conveyor technology
Landmark System change
The JT International Germany GmbH established in Trier enjoys the reputation to be one of the most
modern factories of the Japan Tobacco Inc. group of companies all over the world. A considerable
contribution to this has the logistics. Due to the „global renewal“ of the means of production warehouse
finished at the end of 2010, JTI has again considerably improved the plant performance and the quality and
efficiency of the processes. The plant‘s concept has been developed and implemented within a short time
by the Stöcklin Logistik AG.
JTI - Japan Tobacco International comprises the international tobacco business of the
Japan Tobacco Inc., the globally third biggest company of the tobacco industry with a
market share of 10,5 % and a market value
of approx. 35 Billion US-Dollar. JTI sells its
brand-named products in 120 countries and
gives work to approx. 25 000 persons in 60
different nations.
At the German site Trier JTI operates
besides the existing production plant and the
recently build finished goods warehouse also
an automated capital goods warehouse with
17 aisles. By this, the most important commercial employer of the region ensures that the
cigarette production is supplied on time and
demand-oriented with paper, filters and additives. The initial conception of the plant was
based on the decision to use three fork lift
trucks for the aisles 1 to 9 and two multi-aisle
stacker cranes (SCR) for the aisles 10 to 17.
During the reorganization, these have been
replaced by three new, 10 m high stacker
cranes with transfer car technology, which
serves approx. 13 600 storing positions divided into three heights with products on Euro,
industrial and large pallets. JTI followed
the recommendations of our intralogistics
experts. Their potential analysis proved that
the solution is quite profitable – above all
when the needed performance parameters
with a relatively low throughput and high
storage volume are put in relation to the
necessary investment.
The defined total power of the devices is
ensured even in case of unequal distribution
of the load units in the shelf.
However, a condition is that the SCRs may
enter flexibly in each aisle and that a device
with less load supports a device with more
load. This is possible through the corresponding configuration of the transfer car layout
and control within the Warehouse Management System (WMS).
TRANSFER CAR TECHNOLOGY WITH CLEAR
BENEFITS
AUTOMATED WAREHOUSE WITH NEW
WAREHOUSE TECHNOLOGY AND WINCC
This example also shows, that a reduced
number of devices is not inevitably accompanied by a loss of performance. Just to the
contrary - where before about 40 load units
could be handled per hour, today up to 60
storage and retrieval movements can be
carried out in the same time.
For JTI this measurable quantity is a central
advantage of the transfer car technology, and
the functional principle is easy, too: the SCRs
are not guided via points, but are received
by a rail-guided transfer bridge, transferred
crosswise to the aisle direction and positioned
automatically in front of the corresponding
aisles, in which they finally enter.
In this customer project instead of our
own Stöcklin-WMS we used WinCC to control and visualize the material flows. WinCC
(Windows Control Center) is a PC-based
process visualization system from Siemens
and forms the platform for a plant visualization with all details. It provides the plant
operators with an overview at any time over
the current travel movement of the conveying
tracks, shuttle cars and stacker cranes. Thus,
the operation of the entire plant results very
comfortable. The Stöcklin Warehouse Management System takes charge of the storage
location management and thus forms the layer between the ERP system and WinCC. The
TUNING FOR THE CONVEYOR SYSTEM
Beyond the supply and implementation of
the SCR‘s and transfer cars we were also in
charge of the dismantling of the existing pallet conveying tracks in the area in the front of
the warehouse and its renovation. After the
preceding analysis of the optimization potentials, the existing storing and retrieval tracks
were modernized with 102 chain conveyors
and with new, powerful and energy efficient
motor controllers. Furthermore, additional
light barriers and consoles for the control
panels were installed.
Now, the pallets previously collected in
the incoming goods area are supplied via a
new continuous pallet conveyor at an height
of 1000 mm. For the delivery to the infeed
conveyors a single distributor carriage has
been integrated. Loaded, it reaches a travel
speed of up to 2,5 m/s, unloaded it runs up
to 6 m/s. The acceleration performance is 1,0
m/s2 or 2,5 m/s2.
safety PLC implemented by us is responsible
in cooperation with WinCC for the entire
access concept and the monitoring of the
plant
.
WELL-FITTING AND STILL FLEXIBLE
Between the beginning of the gradual
remodeling and the start-up of the manufacturing operation of the reorganized system only
four months passed. Here, the Stöcklin project
team on site was highly demanded, since the
ongoing operation must not be disturbed too
much under no circumstances. For that reason a
part of the work was carried out on weekends.
JJTI now continues looking optimistically
into the future. The „overall renovation“ of
the capital goods warehouse is considered
an important cornerstone to strengthen and
improve the own market position. Basis for
this are an increased plant availability, more
efficient and speed-up processes as well
as an improved internal and external delivery service. If one day the steady growth
demands a further performance increase, the
system may be expanded flexibly at any time
and be adapted at a calculable investment.

Warehouse and conveyor technology
Growth in efficiency due
to sustainable thinking
The leading manufacturer of cabling systems Reichle & De-Massari has built in the Swiss town of Wetzikon
a ultramodern cube. Stöcklin was in charge as general contractor to conceive the internal logistics and
was able to create on nearly 800 m a „state-of-the-art“ logistics center.
The previous decentralized solution which
resulted increasingly time, personnel and cost
intensive, lead the Swiss co m pany to decide
to optimize the goods and information flows.
Based on that considerations a strategic
union of engineering, production and logistics at one central site, the ultramodern cube,
came into being.
Due to the reduction of the distances, an
important competitive edge could be achieved. The material flow was accelerated extremely and also the communication could be
improved. That is how R&M is able to improve
the high quality standards of its products and
services and enhance also its processes.
With Stöcklin, R&M found a partner for
logistics whose demand for quality, standardization, sustainability and innovation
matches the own profile of requirements.
s general contractor for logistics we supplied the
whole equipment for the high-bay warehouse
built in silo construction, the upstream picking
zone as well as the paternoster conveyors.
The high-bay warehouse which holds
finished products as well as intermediate products and raw materials, is designed
logistically on three levels. The upper two
levels ensure the the connection between the
warehouse and the production which is located on the second and third level. Thus, the
central criteria of an efficient material supply
can be fulfilled, what is absolutely essential
for a trouble-free process of production and
outgoing goods.
On the lowest level the warehouse is operated by a high-performance shuttle car, where the pallets for the customer‘s picking are
delivered to the two U-shaped picking positions. Furthermore, in this zone the arrival of
goods is located. The pallets charged either
with raw materials or finished goods reach
the warehouse via an I feed point by means
of a shuttle car.
The new perfectly thought-through logistics
platform, which is working in 1-shift-operation,
5 days a week, 10 hours a day, offers space
to store 4850 pallets. Our scope of supply not
only included the delivery and integration of
the stacker cranes as well as all other conveying equipment, but also the rapid doors and
the fire protection system in the logistics zone.
The logistic processes are controlled by
means of an intelligent PLC control, we especially programmed for this plant, and the
higher-level SAP system. Both control modules
check the entire material flow and thus take
over the functions of a warehouse management system and a material flow computer.
For the visualization the WinCC program was
implemented. This system which works in 2D
graphics offers the system operator the chance to determine the source of error at once if
a message is prompted and thus the chance
to avoid downtimes.
R&M aimed high regarding the growth in
efficiency. We could help in the logistics area
to simplify certain processes and thus reduce
reaction times.
With the new Cube the set targets could
be achieved, with R&M setting new standards
in all sections and supporting Switzerland as
an industrial site.

Lift trucks
German-Swiss fork lift partnership
Almost 20 years ago the experts in fork lift trucks of Stöcklin and NHK got together. Since then a close
partnership between the Swiss traditional company and the German sales partner exists.
In 1986 Kurt Hartmann and Hans Wilhelm
Kissel started in Bensheim, situated approx.
50 km south of the metropolis of Frankfurt,
with the sales of fork lift trucks.
The company founders did not become
aware of Stöcklin, for whom they should soon
become the most important German retailer,
until they lost a sales order! NHK offered an
inexpensive brand, but the customer insisted
on acquiring the high-grade fork lift trucks
from Stöcklin.
IN THE ORIGIN OF THE PARTNERSHIP WAS
A LOST ORDER
This was decisive for Kurt Hartmann to
inform himself about Stöcklin and to travel to
Switzerland, where he got to know and estimate our company and its products. Since
that time NHK is one of our most reliable partners.
At the beginning NHK bought 20 hand
pallet trucks and distributed them to good
clients of their own. They resulted to be very
successful and nowadays NHK attends a
vast number of big businesses up to 60 km
around Bensheim.
Through the good contact with NHK we
could soon solve the problem to provide spare parts at a reasonable price in Germany.
The Bensheim-based company is acting as
an advanced spare parts warehouse within
the EU market, concentrating the majority
of spare parts orders from German retailers
and transmitting them to us. This way we save
customs duties and can lower the prices for
spare parts. About 2.000 different spare parts
are now on stock at NHK. This is enough to
cover the 95 % of all repairs. Also available
are larger parts as motors, gearboxes and
controllers.
Off course, our retailers have an exclusive sales district, but with one important
exception applying to NHK. A large printing
shop with activities all over the country with
a current stock of more than 100 machines is
exclusively attended by NHK – and this shall
remain an exception.
INNOVATIONS THROUGH TO CLOSE COOPERATION
hours or more in use. But not only the durability of our products has convinced NHK and
its German buyers. Also the minimized use of
electronics, as well as the classic hand console which allows to easily adjust all important
parameters and read the error codes directly
at the device, caught on.
The development of the Stöcklin devices
never stood still. With innovative thinking in
the last years entire series have been completely modernized and technically improved. Our range was expanded by devices
made entirely of stainless steel, how they are
needed in wet or hygienically highly sensible environments. Also FTS and explosiveatmosphere devices have established in our
product range.
Besides the standard devices we always
attach great importance to the continuous
innovations and are pleased to take of the
most special customer requirements – another
reason why the customers got to appreciate
the Swiss company.
Due to the close cooperation with the
German company still another advantage
arises: thanks to the many suggestions we get
from Germany, we are able to improve our
products constantly and adapt them more
precisely to the needs of the user.
This includes among other things the development of the optical pallet detection for the
transport of 3 pallets crosswise. By this, the
driver receives the information, when the load

On 10th November 2010 in some cantons of Switzerland the National Future
Day took place for the tenth time. We from the Stöcklin Logistik AG took part in
this event, too...
...and invited the children of our
employees to spend an exciting day
in our company.
In small groups the children could visit
the different departments and get a
taste of the most varying jobs.
In our own small parts warehouse the
children had the opportunity to cast
a glance over the stored and retrieved containers at the picking position. But also in the office rooms there
was quite a lot to learn for the children, too. Through interviews with our
employees they could find out selective information about their planned
career. For example Dannick (13) said
after spending the day with us: „Later
I would also like to be a project designer - just like Pascal Martin.“
As the event has gone down well with
the children, Stöcklin will participate
in the event again next year in order
to boost the children in their perspectives for the future.
