Centennial Celebration 2017
International Centennial Service Challenge
Lions to serve 100 million people working in their
communities before the end of December 2017
April is ‘Protecting our Environment’ month and
as part of the Centennial Service Challenge a
chance to raise the awareness on the importance
of protecting the environment.
The Multiple District ‘Big Plan’ will be launched at
the MD Convention in Birmingham on 9th/10th
May. A letter has been sent to all Lion Presidents
giving details on how we in the South West can
help to reach the goals.
If anyone has any suggestions for the 105SW
please do not hesitate to contact me.

Young Leaders in Service
IMPORTANT NEWS ON CHANGES TO REQUESTING CERTIFICATES
As from January 2015 Young Leader in Service Certificates will no longer be issued by
Oakbrook. The new system will simplify the process and certificates should be
received by clubs quicker.
With immediate effect Clubs will need to send the completed logbooks, Lions Clubs Award Request Form and the
YLiS School/Youth Organisation Award CERTIFICATION FORM to their YLiS District Officer.
The District Officer will arrange for certificates from the Multiple District Officer. The certificates will be sent
directly to the person named on the Lions Clubs Award Request Form.
Please note that any forms received by Oakbrook will be sent back to the UK without being processed.

LIFESKILLS SUPPORT IN THE COMMUNITY
In the past month, two of our Clubs have donated resources to support the work being done by two different
organisations in the District.
Crewkerne Lions Club
Following the ‘Families for Children’ talk at Autumn Forum, Crewkerne Lions purchased a
copy of ‘Life Changes’, the primary resource on loss, change and bereavement, for them.
These issues have huge significance for adoptees and their families, so, on 18th February, the
book was presented to Ally Colton and Janet Smith at the agency’s headquarters at Buckfast
Abbey by Lions Jean Langmead and Lesley Chudley.
It was interesting to hear more about the organisation and its wonderful work, as well as
some of the practical and emotional challenges that can arise.
The emotional impact on children has already been sensitively expressed and illustrated in
patron David Lawrence Jones’s book, ‘Jig and Saw’, a copy of which was given to Crewkerne
Lions on the day. ‘Life Changes’ will also help staff to support children and families at what is often a traumatic time of
their lives. Sometimes the effects can be long-lasting, so ‘Families for Children’ have offered to trial ‘Life Changes 2’
when the draft is ready so that children can be supported well into the future.
Okehampton Lions Club
Okehampton Lions have long-standing links with their local college and our District
Forums are held there too, so the Club was keen to support their Citizenship work and
their Personal, Social and Health education. Over the winter, Lion President Michael
Chastey and Lifeskills DO Jean met with both Heads of Department to discuss this.
On 25th February, President Michael and Lion Walter Jory were able to present the
‘Citizenship’ source to Mike Gurney, Head of Citizenship at the College. This took place
with some of his students present and the Lions were told that the folder would be a
great asset to the school.
The PSHE Department has offered to trial ‘Life Changes 2’ for a bereavement module and this will be followed up in due
course. Visits to several primary schools were also made in January and two resources have already been ordered for
one of them. The Club is providing considerable Lifeskills support across a wide largely-rural community.

Mute Swan – Lion Brian Winter of Yeo Valley Lions Club won the best Overall Photograph in District 105SW Competition and
so was the District entry sent for the MD leg of the Competition in which he was Judged the best Overall in the MD and so
now represents the MD (and of course our district) at the International stage which will be judged at International
Convention.
The picture was take on the Somerset Levels an area that suffered during the floods last year.

like to say a heartfelt thank you to fellow Lions of 105SW
for their support and votes at Convention.

I WANT TO TELL YOU A STORY
A company called TRAC Services, who arrange
interviews with volunteers to check how easy it is to
understand the patient information leaflets provided with
medicines, contacted Camborne Redruth and District Lions
Club in regards to discussing a fundraising opportunity.
TRAC had used the Lions previously when they were asked
to organise some volunteer interviews back in 2008 or
2009. TRAC explained that they have currently had another
leaflet undergoing testing and wondered if CR&DLC would
be interested in participating again.
In this instance TRAC were looking for 10 volunteers in the
following age and gender categories: 1 male and 3 females aged 45 - 60 years
 2 male and 4 females aged 60 +
Ideally TRAC anted to carry out the testing within 5 days
and they wanted to know if the Lions would be able to
arrange volunteers at such short notice. In exchange for
the volunteers time , a donation of £20 per person was
offered. Of course we rose to the task and each interview
took no longer than 20-30 minutes. TRAC had two
interviewers available at a time and within 3 hours the
project was completed.
A £200 cheque will soon be added to our Lions’ Charity
Account.
RETIRED SOLICITOR JOINS THE LIONS
Peter Cale a 67 year old retired solicitor from Cardiff
Wales has joined the Camborne Redruth & District
Lions Club.
5 years ago Peter closed his 25year old business in
Bristol and moved with Karen, his Cornish bride
from Newlyn, back to Higher Penponds. They have
2 daughters and one grandchild.
Peter’s interests are reading, travel (he says
anywhere east of Redruth is fine), gardening, cycling
and walking. One of his best walks was the northern
section of the GR20 in Corsica.

LIONS DOUBLE YOUTH AWARD

South Molton Club had a computer brainstorming
hour at the March Business meeting. Many members
brought along their own ipads and laptops and it
proved to be a very worthwhile session. The more
confident Lions explained what was available on the
Lion’s Websites and how to access our own Facebook
page. Everyone agreed how helpful it had been.
At a recent meeting the Lions latest Youth award
was presented to two brothers 15 years old Kristen
and 13 year old Jacob Featherbe from Redruth.
Kirsten was nominated to the Lions by Alex
Kettlewell, Redruth School Deputy Head, who
arranged for him to be visited by Lion President Paul
Bray and Lion Youth Officer Neil Heathcote.
Since their Mother’s illness, she has a wasting
disease and finds it extremely difficult to get a
round; both Kristen & Jacob have taken it upon
themselves to be their mother’s carers.
Because of their commitment and devotion to their
mother the Lions decided to award both of them
with £50 vouchers.

St Piran’s Day March 5th
Celebrated in Launceston,
Tasmania!!!
Today, the Board of the Lions Club of Launceston Windmill Hill celebrated St Piran’s Day following
their board meeting.
This would not be unusual for the Lions Club of
Launceston District 105SW but this took place in
Launceston, Tasmania, Australia – Lions District
201T1 !
Last year, Lions Byron and Linda Dilworth travelled
from Launceston, Tasmania to Launceston, Cornwall
to start the process of twinning between the Lions
Club of Launceston Windmill Hill (Tasmania) and The
Lions Club of Launceston Cornwall.
After the scheduled board meeting, Byron outlined
the Story of St Piran, and how he was washed up on
the Cornish coast after being set adrift from Ireland.
He built a fire upon a black slab of rock, the fire’s
intense heat melted the tin ore within the rock
which bled out forming a ‘silver’ (heraldic for white)
cross upon the rock. This discovery of tin in Cornwall
and how to smelt it by St Piran is recognised in St
Piran’s Cross – The Flag of Cornwall and as the
Patron Saint of Tin Miners all around the world.

BOWLS FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED
FROM WESTON SUPER MARE TO NEW ZEALAND!
Worle Lions Club has been proud to hold a Bowls Tournament
for the visually impaired annually at Clarence Park Bowls Club
for the past 5 years.
Members of Worle, Weston, Cheddar, Clevedon, Burnham,
Portishead and Yeo Valley have all been trained to be Markers
(or Callers) at this event and some have progressed to become
Directors for the Bowlers.
This has resulted in 2 members of Worle Lions joining the
England Team at the recent International Bowls for the
Disabled 2015 World Championships held in Wellington,
New Zealand.
Keith and Sylvia Cook, members of Worle Lions Club, joined
Ron Homer and Nancy Cheeseman, both Yeovil players, in New
Zealand, having heard they had been picked for the England
Team but had no Directors to help them take part. Ron and
Nancy both play in the B2 Visually Impaired section and knew
them well from the Clarence Park Tournament where they
both participate each year.
To the delight of everyone, Ron and Keith won a Gold Medal,
making them World Champions and Nancy and Sylvia won a
Silver Medal. What a great honour and opportunity to take
part in a World Championship and bring home medals for
England. There were 11 Countries participating and the South
African Team won the overall World Cup, with New Zealand
runners up and England in third place.
Worle Lions Club have always found it a great pleasure to
support the Visually Impaired Bowlers, with the England event
being the icing on the cake. This year’s Clarence Park event
will take place over 4 days, Thursday 30 April to Sunday 3 May
with over 50 bowlers taking part.

I too have been away at a convention and a very enjoyable time it was. I think about the wonderful time I have had, the Lions friends I
have seen again and the new Lions friends I have made and how great the Lions are ion the South West. I am now looking forward to the
multiple district convention and then next year’s SW Convention and this perks me up.

You are in luck as many Lions are raffling off Easter eggs for Lions charities. It is all very eggciting! They are usually located at various pubs,
shops and other locations in the local community. No eggxaggeration! The monies raised from this event will help local charities and the
winner will have a lovely chocolate Easter egg to give to their loved one or two whoever they want. That’s eggcellent!
Of course if you don’t win, you will just have to go out and buy one. Eggxlamation mark!

A weekend of BLUE and YELLOW and FUN
Those of you attended will know that the Convention at Unison Croyde Bay was a success and those of you who didn’t
missed out on an extremely good weekend.
The weekend commenced with a Blue and Yellow themed party night on Friday at which everyone dressed up in varying
degrees from ’50 Shades of Blue and Yellow’ to more sartorial attire. T he evening was topped of by loads of gentle
humour from Tank Sherman which kept most of us in tears of laughter.
Saturday brought the business session with an interesting talk from Sir Nick Harvey MP, a poem from the ‘pulpit’ by DG
Alan (copies available on request), a visit from Robin Christopherson (with his guide dog) from Ability Net extolling the
virtues of the many downloadable apps for people with disabilities, through to a Skyped visit from IPP Barry Palmer (not
in Australia but Grimsby!) and topped off by an inspirational session led by Past International Director Patti Hill.
Pattis’ theme was F-U-N i.e. Fellowship, Understanding and New Ideas all based on the idea of a family unit. The talk
involved the members attending being divided into ‘middle of the toothpaste tube squeezers’ and those who squeezed
from the end and eventually everyone divided into Eagles (high fliers) Peacocks (social beings) Owls (sticklers for details)
and Doves ( peacemakers) It’s a shame that there is no recording available as Patti is an excellent motivator and orator.
The Lions Brass 4 Youth Band played before the business session and during the lunch break and they are certainly
going from strength to strength.
The Gala evening was sent off to a good start with an excellent meal, short speeches and was rounded off by dancing to
‘Old Dogs-New Tricks’ for those still on their feet!
The Sunday morning Question and Answer session engendered lots of discussion on varying topics ranging from the
elections of International Presidents, training to publicity and membership.
Most people left after the session but a few stayed for a carvery lunch and were awarded free desserts as apparently all
the staff at Unison Croyde Bay had enjoyed our company!!
What better ending!!
Well done and thanks to David Atkins and his team of Committee members.

Convention is now over and what a wonderful time we had. What a privilege it was to see so many lions from SW
enjoying them, meeting old friends and making new friends. I hope the pictures will give a flavour of what went on.
Congratulations to Lesley, voted as District Governor Elect, Fred voted as 1st Vice District Governor Elect and Ian Snell
who was voted as 2nd Vice District Governor elect. This is the new DG Team for 2015/16 and I know that you will
support them in their goal to make SW the best District.
There is still 3 months to go for me as your District Governor and I will be working just as hard on my goals that I set out
at the start of the Lions year. I still have a quite full Lions diary till the end of June, but I would like, if able to attend
events that SW Lions are putting on, be it beer festivals (my favourite), art exhibition. Concerts or whatever we Lions
get up to.
Can I also remind you that these events can be added on to the online diary.
