Theatre Season
SHADBOLT THEATRE
2016/2017
We’re 21 years young at the Shadbolt and we’re doubling
down to give you the best of live performance — and a
little bit more! Inspired by the winning combination of the
Queen and Ace for our 21st season, we are following suit
with all the performances this year so don’t bet against
the house. It doesn’t matter if you’re a music lover, a
theatre fan or a dance maven, there’s twice as much to
love with our perfect pairings, whether it’s the addition
of a tantalizing nibble or cocktail with your evening’s
entertainment, or an unexpected and unique artistic
collaboration that inspires and delights. From Carmen
to the Cowboy Junkies and Chase Padgett to 2b theatre,
this season, two is the magic number.
Double your pleasure, double your fun in 2016/17.

PuSh Festival
January 19-21
Presented by PuSh International Performing Arts Festival,
Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and Surrey Civic Theatres
Written by Jordan Tannahill
Created by Erin Brubacher, Cara Spoooner and Jordan Tannahill
Concord Floral is a one-million-square-foot abandoned greenhouse and a hangout for
neighbourhood kids. But something has happened there. Something nobody wants
to talk about. Concord Floral re-imagines Giovanni Boccaccio’s medieval allegory
The Decameron in a contemporary Vancouver suburb, in which ten teens must flee
a mysterious plague they have brought upon themselves.
The play was written by Governor General Award-winning playwright Jordan Tannahill
and originally created by Erin Brubacher, Cara Spooner and Jordan Tannahill with a cast
of teenagers in Toronto. This west coast production of Concord Floral is directed by
Erin Brubacher with original co-creators Cara Spooner and Jordan Tannahill.

CARMEN
by Georges Bizet
February 18, 23, 25 | 8pm
February 20, 22 | 2pm (Matinee)
A Burnaby Lyric Opera production in association with Shadbolt Centre for the Arts
Stage Director: Richard Berg
Music Director: Angus Kellett
Libre elle est née et libre elle moura! (Free she was born and free she will die!)
These are the fateful words of Carmen; the passionate, sultry gypsy heroine who lives
by her own rules. The irresistible Carmen plays a dangerous game when she seduces
Don Jose, a love-sick soldier who tries in vain to tame the fiery gypsy. Bizet’s musical
masterpiece plays out amid an underlying atmosphere of foreboding, as obsession and
jealousy turn deadly. Carmen is filled with some of the most memorable melodies in
opera and is one of the most frequently staged operas in the world. Carmen comes to
life with Burnaby Lyric Opera’s production team and the best of B.C.’s operatic talent
at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. This is a “must see”.... don’t miss it!
Sung in French with English surtitles.

LIVE AT THE BOLT: A JAZZY EVENING
The Grant Stewart Trio with Cory Weeds & Special Guests
Visuals by Rough House Productions
September 24 | 8pm
Grant Stewart plays as much tenor saxophone as anyone, anywhere. The 45-year-old
Toronto native, who has lived in New York since 1990, has become a veritable tenor colossus
and an unswerving force on the New York scene. He could be the reincarnation of the Sonny
Rollins of the fifties, but he has parlayed this into his own distinctive sound. His muscular
approach and deft use of space are enhanced by his unique sense of swing.
TRIO, released in 2015, received a five star review in Jazz Journal, a four star review in
Downbeat Magazine, and spent 11 weeks in the Top 50 on the Jazz Week Charts, making
it as high as #19.
Joining Grant is bassist Paul Sikivie (Cécile McLorin Salvant, Matt Wilson), drummer
Phil Stewart (Pat Martino, Barry Harry, Hank Jones), singer/special guest Jaclyn Guillou
– 2015 Juno Nominee and West Coast Music Award Nominee, guitarist Bill Coon and
saxophonist Cory Weeds.

BASKERVILLE:
A SHERLOCK HOLMES MYSTERY
By Ken Ludwig
November 7 & 8 | 8pm
A fast-paced farcical adventure!
Five actors play over 40 comical characters, filling the stage with suspects, allies,
and heirs in this zany whodunit based on the Arthur Conan Doyle classic. When
the wealthy Henry Baskerville is threatened by the fable of a bloodthirsty hound
on the moors, Holmes and Watson are on the case to sniff out the culprit. The
game’s afoot in this hilarious thriller that’s anything but elementary!

THE (POST) MISTRESS
By Tomson Highway
February 2 & 3 | 8pm
The small-town cabaret of sealed secrets
Marie-Louise, an effervescent, charismatic postal worker in the fictional town
of Lovely, seems to know everything about everyone — and is eager to share
all the gossip with you. A fun and quirky one-woman show, The (Post) Mistress
is a uniquely Canadian cabaret full of music and charm.
16
BITTERGIRL: THE MUSICAL
Book by Annabel Fitzsimmons,
Alison Lawrence and Mary Francis Moore
March 14 & 15 | 8pm
The howlingly funny show about getting over getting dumped
This cathartic and catchy musical charts the romantic breakups of three women and
the lively antics that ensue. ‘60s girl group music like “Be My Baby,” “And Then He
Kissed Me,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” and “Where Did Our Love Go?”
provide the perfect backdrop for the bittergirls’ journey back to happiness.
Who knew getting dumped could be so much fun?

COWBOY JUNKIES
September 28 | 8pm
For more than 20 years, Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic
vision and to the introspective, quiet intensity that is their musical signature, creating
a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to their loyal
audience. Their albums chronicle a creative journey reflecting the independent road
the band had elected to travel.
Cowboy Junkies were formed in Toronto in 1985. The band recorded its blues-inspired
debut album Whites Off Earth Now!! (1986) and toured extensively through the US in
the South and Southwest, soaking up the music of Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams,
Jimmie Rodgers and others. The Trinity Session, the band’s seminal second album,
is a melancholic mixture of blues, country, folk and rock featuring a collection of
originals, covers and traditional songs. Cowboy Junkies returned to Toronto’s Church
of the Holy Trinity in November 2006, joined by Ryan Adams, Natalie Merchant and
Vic Chesnutt to revisit The Trinity Session in celebration of its 20th anniversary.
The resulting film and album, Trinity Session Revisited, was released in January 2008.
The band has appeared on major television shows in North America from Saturday
Night Live to Late Night with David Letterman and the Tonight Show. Their music
has been featured in dozens of television programs and feature films.

Sharron Matthews, award-winning, international cabaret goddess, bares it all.
Spinning the music of AC/DC, Madonna, Cheap Trick, P!NK, Coldplay, U2, Shirley Bassey,

straight to the bone with her spellbinding stories of want, of need, of love, of fear and,
as always, of hysterical joy.
In NAKED, Sharron strips down musically and emotionally, pulling the audience into
this intimate performance in a way that is both moving and breathtaking.
In 2015, Sharron was named “Best Cabaret Performance” by Broadway World and was
nominated for BC Touring Artist of the Year. Sharron has been performing her sold out
cabarets from South Africa to New York for the last 11 years, and this is one of her finest

POP-UP LOVE PARTY
Zuppa Theatre
February 8-11 | 8pm
What is the true nature of erotic love?
Pop-Up Love Party reimagines Plato’s Symposium in its quest to define eros with all its
plagues and pleasures. The performers must outdo each other in a battle of ideas. They
do this with the aid of nostalgia, aerobics, a kangaroo court, conspiracy theories, an
infectious pop ballad and quiet philosophical contemplation... while reclaiming the
meaning of the word symposium: drinking party.
For a $15 additional fee, enjoy a seven-course snack menu created by Michelin-starred
chef, Daniel Burns. Chef Burns co-owns Luksus, which was recently named one of
New York’s best new restaurants and one of America’s 50 best new restaurants by
Bon Appétit. His first cookbook, Food and Beer, was published in 2016 by Phaidon.
Burns created the menu specifically for Pop-Up Love Party with flavours and textures
to render the show’s central ideas as viscerally as possible.
Pop-Up Love Party is a philosophical feast, a sensory slip n’ slide and a unique theatrical
experience from deep in the pulsing Zuppa heart. It was developed in part through
The Collaborations at Canada’s National Arts Centre.

FROM NEW YORK:
THE GROOVER MIKE LEDONNE
PLAYS EARTH, WIND & FIRE
Featuring Cory Weeds and Joe Farnsworth
April 6 | 8pm
Mike LeDonne is a double threat — equally proficient on piano and Hammond
B3 Organ. As a pianist he has had long stints with the likes of Benny Goodman,
Milt Jackson and Benny Golson. As an organist he has concentrated primarily on
his quartet, which has held down the Tuesday night spot at New York’s Smoke
Jazz Club for more than 15 years. The Groover, as he calls himself, has released
six records with his quartet, including his most recent AwwlRIGHT! to critical acclaim.
This concert reunites LeDonne with Vancouver’s Cory Weeds (alto saxophone).
Their second collaboration resulted in the recording of UP A STEP: The Music of
Hank Mobley and garnered the group a Juno nomination. Their last recording,
Condition Blue: The Music of Jackie McLean, spent 18 weeks on the Jazz Week
Charts, making it as high as #3.
LeDonne and Weeds reunite again for this special concert featuring the music of
Earth, Wind & Fire. Joining the band will be Steve Kaldestad – tenor saxophone,
Dave Sikula – guitar and Joe Farnsworth – drums.

perfect dance has nothing to do with an unattainable ideal but exists in the spaces
between, around and within us all. Join Vanessa Goodman, Jane Osborne and James Gnam
for a performance that asks us to be present, to be connected and to be together.
“My perfect dance needs people. It is a dance that includes failure.” — James

Meredith Kalaman
May 3-6 | 8pm
The first full-length work by Meredith Kalaman comes to the stage of the Shadbolt
Centre for the Arts in May 2017. Femme Fatales is a poetic trio for three women
that blends narrative and contemporary dance to bring to light the impact of gender
socialization. The work takes a thought provoking look at our history of gender defined
roles and behaviours to illuminate the impact on us today. Blending pleasure and
sorrow, this work dives into the heart of what makes us who we are.

JAKE’S GIFT
November 2 & 3 | 8pm
Written and performed by Julia Mackey
Directed by Dirk Van Stralen
Jake’s Gift is a surprisingly funny, multi-award winning drama, that tells the story
of a Canadian WW2 veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy, France for the 60th
Anniversary of D-Day. While roaming the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters
Isabelle, a precocious ten-year-old from the local village whose inquisitive nature
and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts — most
notably, the wartime death of his eldest brother, Chester, a once promising young
musician. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes
personal the story behind one soldier’s grave.

NASHVILLE HURRICANE:
A CURIOUS TALE OF FINGERPICKIN’ FURY
Chase Padgett
November 4 & 5 | 8pm
40 years ago a mysterious acoustic guitarist appeared from nowhere, conquered
the music industry and vanished without a trace… until now.
Fresh on the heels of his smash hit 6 Guitars, virtuoso actor and musician Chase
Padgett becomes a manager, a mother, a mentor and the guitar prodigy himself as
each one tells their side of the rise, demise and resurrection of the best damn guitar
player you’ve never heard of: the Nashville Hurricane.
During the course of this 75 minute one-man masterpiece, the audience learns
about Henry Waltrip, from his humble trailer park beginnings alongside his white
trash mother, Brenda, to the crazy gigs on the road with his blues playing mentor,
Tyrone. The stories and songs unfold into hilarious rants on love and music, a
riveting tale involving the dark side of show biz, and blazing guitar work like the
finale – a one man acoustic “Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

WHAT A YOUNG WIFE OUGHT TO KNOW
2b theatre company
March 15-18 | 8pm
Set in 1920s Ottawa, What a Young Wife Ought to Know tells the story of Sophie,
a young working-class wife who has a lot to learn about love, sex and birth control.
Hannah Moscovitch’s play takes an honest look at the lives of a generation of women
that gave birth to the generation that would go on to develop modern birth control.
This play is both a vital examination of important women’s issues, and a love story that
resonates with all audiences. Sophie’s journey through womanhood and motherhood
is sometimes tragic, sometimes ridiculous and always recognizable.
“By giving the women of the 1920s a voice, Moscovitch has given many contemporary
women a voice as well. What a Young Wife Ought to Know is more than a compelling
history lesson, it is an opportunity to contemplate the state of sexual health and
freedom in our society today.”

DECK OR HOW I INSTIGATED THEN OVERCAME AN
EXISTENTIAL CRISIS THROUGH HOME IMPROVEMENT
Written and performed by Lucas Myers
April 21 & 22 | 8pm
DECK examines the fine line between perfectionism and obsession, chaos
and freedom and why a piece of 2x6 lumber isn’t really two inches by six
inches. Not even close. DECK stars Cliv, a meticulous single parent of two
who has been forced to reassess his future after taking major losses in the
recent recession. He embraces a new start as a small town, eco-conscious,
back-to-the-lander. His attempts at self-sufficiency are hijacked by a bad
house buy and he is forced to try his hand at home improvement. Enter
Corey, the charismatic carpenter who takes Cliv under his wing and offers to
lend a hand. As Cliv is drawn into Corey’s world of freewheeling, free-living,
Cliv begins to lose his grasp on reality and is consumed by suspicions of
Corey’s true motives. DECK is a darkly hilarious take on the modern milieu of
a small-town, semi-urban environment.
Please note: This performance is not suitable for children.
