Roxi Dykstra earned a
masters degree in viola
performance in Montreal
with further studies in Lyon,
France at the Conservatoire
Supérieur and in Italy at the
Guiseppe Verdi Conservatory. She has worked in a
variety of positions, including five years as principal
violist of the Prince George
Symphony Orchestra, several years at the PG Conservatory of Music, and as
performer, director, teacher,
and adjudicator across northern BC. Currently based in
Germany, Roxi performs regularly with orchestras as a
freelance musician while continuing her involvement with
the musical development of Northern British Columbia
Born in Germany and
raised in Ontario,
Sebastian Ostertag began
playing the cello at age six
and has become known for
his passion and dedication
towards music from Haydn
to Hip-Hop. He completed
a Bachelors of Music
Degree in Performance
Western University with
Thomas Wiebe, and an
Artist Diploma at the Glenn
Gould School.
From 2010 – 2013, Sebastian was principal cellist of the
Prince George Symphony Orchestra and Director of the
Prince George Youth Orchestra. He has performed at the
Sweetwater Music Festival, Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, and the Osheaga Music Festival and has
recorded with Basia Bulat, Cadence Weapon and Juno
award winner Shad K.
This program is presented by Bulkley Valley Classical
Strings Society, and supported by the Prince George
Symphony Orchestra, Northwest Community College,
and the Bulkley Valley Arts Council
Chantal Lemire (violin/viola)
has received a Bachelor
of Music from UBC, and
a Masters of Music from
McGill University. She has
performed chamber music across North America
and Europe, and with such
orchestras as the National
Youth Orchestra, the Prince
George Symphony Orchestra, and the Winnipeg
Symphony.
Chantal is devoted to music research and pedagogy and
has completed a Masters of Arts in music theory at UBC.
She has presented papers at the Canadian Music Centre, and the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, and is currently a PhD student at Western University,
exploring the cognitive relationship between entrainment
and anticipation in musical rhythm and speech rhythm.
Simon Cole is Principal Clarinetist with the PGSO, and
has performed chamber music recitals with many of
Canada’s finest musicians, including Jasper Wood,
Shauna Rolston, Arnold Draper, and George Zukerman.
Simon Cole is also a composer who reflects the natural
beauty of the Canadian North in his music.
Simon’s group Alban Classical, has performed for more
than 10,000 students in remote communities from Hartley
Bay, BC to Old Crow, Yukon.

Toby Moisey of Smithers BC, is an active performer and
educator. Appearing often in solo and chamber recitals,
he also performs as a jazz, folk and rock flutist. Toby has
studied at the University of Victoria (BMus) and at the
Saint Petersburg State Conservatory, Russia.

Summer Program (June 30 – July 5)
Want to be inspired by an amazing week of music this
summer?
The Orchestra North Summer Program (ONSP) is a returning to
Smithers BC this summer for a week-long orchestra and chamber music festival that draws together musicians from across
the north and beyond. Encouraging collaboration and excellence of music, ONSP aims to enrich the artistic life of communities and participants, while having fun at the same time.
Presented by the Bulkley Valley Classical Strings Society, Northwest Community College and the Prince George Symphony
Orchestra, the program features a professional faculty who
have taught and performed throughout Canada and Europe.
The festival will include up to five orchestras, chamber music
groups, special projects and pop up concerts in Smithers.
Through generous funding, sponsorships and support, we are
proud to offer the program at low cost. If you are interested in
meeting other musicians at your level of playing and challenging yourself musically, come and join us!
Financial assistance is available through our bursary program.

Many Skill Levels Welcome
We invited string applications of all ages and levels from beginning to pre-professional, and advanced orchestral winds and
brass players to apply. Participants will be divided into orchestras and chamber groups suitable to their level of playing and
experience. University music students or recent graduates are
encouraged to inquire about the ONSP Academy. Interested
pianists may also inquire about available spaces.
Activities and Programs
The 2014 festival will include a variety of public concerts during
the week of study. These include Classics on Main, and most
notably, performances at the Friday evening symphony orchestra concert, as well as a Saturday concert at the Smithers
Midsummer Festival.
When not playing music, there are BBQs, hikes, and Canada
Day festivities to enjoy while in beautiful Smithers BC!
Accommodation
If you are not from the Smithers area, there are hotels, B&Bs,
and campgrounds available. If you need/ wish, we can try
and find a local host family for you. We can put you in touch
with possible hosts, but ask that you make the arrangements
regarding dates, special requests, and transportation with them
yourself. Please indicate on the application form if you need
help with accommodation.
All programs conclude on Saturday July 5 at 12:00pm

Participants will study and perform in either a beginning,
intermediate, or senior symphonic orchestra, and all ages and
levels are welcome to register! Throughout the week, there will
be orchestra rehearsals, chamber music groups and concerts
throughout Smithers. Beginning and intermediate programs will
end in the afternoon, while the senior symphonic orchestra will
rehearse each evening with the ONSP Academy and Faculty.

Repertoire will vary by group from simple folk and fiddle tunes
to major repertoire, and include music written or arranged by
northern BC composers and groups including Simon Cole, Kent
Dykstra, Gordon Lucas, and the Smithers section of Twisted
String. Our work will culminate in performances on July 4 and 5
in Smithers, opening the local Midsummer Festival in Smithers.

This program provides intensive orchestral and chamber music
studies with leadership and teaching opportunities for students
enrolled in a post secondary program. During the week, participants will lead orchestra sections, coach younger student
groups, and perform alongside the ONSP faculty. Applicants
who are accepted to the Academy will have their tuition waived,
accommodations provided, and receive a stipend.
