CP31 Treyarnon Bay The Coast Path leading into the South West
CP31 Treyarnon Bay
The Coast Path leading into the South
West side of Treyarnon Beach has, over the
last few years, experienced ongoing storm
water erosion which has in turn created
gulleys and an uneven walking surface.
Where the natural path meets an old flight
of concrete steps, there was a shelving bed
of slate which was awkward to negotiate
and slippery when wet. The state of the Path
meant that it was accessible with care for the
more abled walker, but made life difficult for
the less abled and especially those with
disability.
As this section of the South West Coast Path is heavily used, and
Treyarnon Beach extremely popular throughout the year but especially
in the Summer, it was felt that it would make a suitable candidate for
accessing funding through the RDPE. It also serves a busy campsite on
one side of the beach, and a busy Youth Hostel on the other.
The work programme included levelling the South West Coast Path and
placing a short flight of low level steps and a small number of grips to
deflect the storm water. The bedrock had metal reinforcing pins
drilled into the slate and the side of the concrete steps and concrete
was then poured onto the metal work so that it should create enough
resistance during the heavy seas to resist future erosion.
