Timeless Appeal Season After Season
For the past 100 years, Royal Doulton has been producing figures admired and cherished
the world over. The famous Royal Doulton HN figure range began its modern life in 1913
and launched the rebirth of Staffordshire figure making inaugurated by Art Director,
Charles Noke. The success of the range cannot be denied or underestimated, for
no other factory has achieved what Royal Doulton has over the last century.
In honor of the centennial anniversary, Christopher Evans, Seaway China’s
guest writer and Royal Doulton historian, has been educating collectors
with his in depth look back at 100 years of Royal Doulton figure making.
The final installment in the series traces the evolution of the Christmas
figure from the early days of Leslie Harradine to the modern releases
of today, insuring the longevity of the HN range.

Royal Doulton Centennial Jubilee
Holiday Figures Throughout The Past 100 Years
By Christopher Evans
With the centenary of the introduction of Royal Doulton’s world famous HN collection of figures drawing
to a close and as we approach the Christmas season once again, what better time to look back to
the many festive delights produced to excite collectors over the last 100 years! It will also be a great
opportunity to introduce Royal Doulton’s latest festive creations to please a new generation of collectors.
Christopher Evans
Royal Doulton Historian
Whilst the first figures introduced into the range from 1913 can hardly be said to have
been festive introductions, a quick glance through the collection shows that winter
fashions certainly were represented. Consider The Ermine Muff HN54, Lady With an
Ermine Muff HN82 or Out for a Walk HN86 – each of these figures is modelled wearing
the then popular ermine and fur trimmings to their coats and each sheltering her hands
from the cold winter wind inside an ermine muff. Both Charles Noke, Doulton’s famous
Art Director and Ernest W. Light accurately interpreted the latest fashions of the time in
these three figures as can be seen in this advert from the early 20th Century.
Leslie Harradine Models Christmas
Figures for the HN Range
An early advert for
Peter Robinson Ltd.,
a ladies novelty
shop. The ad
inspired the figure
Lady Ermine.
It was another two decades before collectors
were provided with what we today would call
typical Christmas style figures. One of the first
we must mention is actually Honey HN1963,
for whilst we all know her carrying a bouquet
of flowers and her dainty bag, in the original
Stanislaus Longley picture from which Leslie
Harradine took inspiration for her, she is seen
carrying her Christmas parcels. This image
was used by the stylish and famous London
department store Liberty’s of Regent Street for
their Christmas catalog in the 1930’s. After
Honey, came a parade of Christmas inspired
figures including two personal favourites of
mine (also Harradine creations), Genevieve
HN1962 and Her Ladyship HN1977,
both of whom were modelled in the
early 1940’s.

In 1945, Royal Doulton first presented The Ermine Coat HN1981
to the world and she, together with Peggy Davies’ Christmas
Morn HN1992 have ever since epitomised Royal Doulton’s
Christmas pageant of figures. Today they remain firm favourites
amongst collectors the world over, who use them for imaginative,
festive displays in their homes. In the immediate post war period
of the late 1940’s and as Leslie Harradine’s association with
Royal Doulton was coming to an end, he supplied what have
become some of his rarest models for Royal Doulton due to their
short production runs. Amongst this small group of figures is
Rowena HN2077, modelled as a Victorian damsel clutching her
fur muff as she waves to her admirers on a winter’s day.
Peggy Davies Creates
Holiday Classics
By the early 1950’s, it was Peggy Davies who was supplying
the majority of Royal Doulton’s newest models, amongst
them were her popular pretty ladies for which she is famed
including Christmas Time HN2110 and The Skater HN2117,
but also character figures including Good King Wenceslas
HN2118 based upon the famous Christmas carol, which
illustrates her diverse ability as an artist. Perhaps one
of Peggy’s most dramatic figures is Noelle HN2179
introduced in 1957, and modelled wearing a stylish
red coat with typical ermine trim over a dramatic
black and white striped skirt.

The Holiday Tradition
Continues Today
This tradition for festive ladies has continued right up
to today, carried on by other artists who have given
us firm festive favourites including Christmas Parcels
HN2851 from 1978, Merry Christmas HN3096,
Louise HN3207, Santa’s Helper HN3301, Best Wishes
HN3426 and of course the wonderful figure The Skater
HN3439 introduced in 1992.

Royal Doulton’s extensive heritage in producing high
quality figures has also meant the introduction of
limited edition series and festive series for collectors.
One of last year’s most popular introductions was the
‘Songs of Christmas’ set of three figures who take their
names from famous Christmas carols.

A more recent tradition established by Royal Doulton is their annual Christmas Tableau
and this year’s introduction cannot fail to appeal to collectors old and new. Titled
A Christmas Kiss HN5658 and available in a strict worldwide limited edition
of 3,000, it is sure to be popular with collectors, so place your order today!
We could not talk about Christmas without mentioning
good old Saint Nick and it is no surprise to find that
Father Christmas himself has been immortalised
many times over by artists such as Robert Tabbenor’s
Father Christmas HN3399 from 1992 and also
Santa Claus HN4175 in 2000. This year’s
introduction is a classic new example of
this popular character, Letters To Santa
HN5585, the 2013 Father Christmas
figure of the year. This figure is seen
checking his letter from a fan to make
sure he leaves the correct Christmas
surprises under the Christmas tree.
As you would expect from Royal
Doulton he epitomises the perfect
gift for family and friends this
Christmas and we are sure he
himself, will be added to many
wish lists this year!

There are over twenty different shapes to collect including the
very rare coal skuttle and watering can, but also vases, jugs,

small part of what was produced by Royal Doulton to celebrate
Christmas, these pieces are amongst the most charming due to
their size and of course the detail included on each individual
piece. As miniatures they are also prized highly by the many
collectors of all things miniature made by Royal Doulton. Even
today new seriesware discoveries do turn up and that is part of
the thrill of collecting any seriesware pattern.
Other popular seriesware patterns with a festive theme to look
for include Snowflake, Coaching Days in a winter landscape

2014 Petite Figure

7.25”H $95
introducing the new
2014 annual figures
Graceful, feminine and enduring are just some of the
reasons why Royal Doulton figurines are as popular
in the 21st century as they were a hundred years ago.
With design inspiration drawn from a multitude of
contemporary and historic sources including fashion,
dance and beauty, the annual figurines represent the
essence of Royal Doulton. All the figurines in the annual
collections are created by renowned British designers and
are hand decorated by highly skilled artisans. Moreover,
each year the fresh studies are destined to become the
heirlooms of the future. For 2014 the annual figurines are
all designed by Neil Faulkner and share an outdoor theme.
Tallulah HN5673
2014 Michael Doulton
Event Figure of the Year
10”H $224
Elizabeth, Figure of the Year 2014, is radiant in pink, as
she walks amongst the flowers in her garden, enjoying
their delicate perfume. Inspired by the warm tones of
the traditional English Rose, Elizabeth’s blush pink dress
is decorated with clusters of roses in deeper contrasting
shades. The rosy theme continues to her broad brimmed
hat, where a hand-made rose secures the ribbon around
its crown.
Jenny, Petite Figure of the Year 2014, is a lover of nature
and she’s portrayed with one of the friends she’s made
in her garden - a tiny blue tit. Jenny’s full length sun
dress is modern in style featuring a square neckline to the
bodice and a chic sash with decorative clasp to the waist.
Exquisite hand-made roses adorn the coral hat band of
Jenny’s cream sun hat.
Tallulah is the latest sculpture to join an exclusive group
of figurines that are only available from retailers holding
events hosted by Michael Doulton – a direct descendent
of Royal Doulton’s founding father. Named after Michael
Doulton’s first grandchild, and with blond hair in her
honor, Tallulah is an enchanting Royal Doulton figurine.
For nearly 30 years these exceptional figurines have been
wonderful mementos of a special day and have become
an important tradition in their own right.
Happy Birthday 2014 portrays a confident young
woman enjoying a celebratory day at the races; binoculars
to the ready as she prepares to watch her favorite horses
and jockeys gallop by. In an Edwardian style costume
with a slender silhouette that flares out over petticoats,
complemented by a distinctive belt tied with a flamboyant
bow, elbow length gloves, delicate parasol and a large
picture hat, Happy Birthday 2014 is the epitome of style.

Heroines Collection
by Royal Doulton
The figurines in the Pretty Ladies collection are the
archetype of Royal Doulton, and although they are
traditional in concept, contemporary fashion trends
are often revealed by the choice of hairstyle, the
sweep of the skirt and the cut of the neckline. Royal
Doulton designers’ careful observations of women
and sensitive interpretations of the way they stand
and move, combined with their innate appreciation of
fashion design, are revealed in every study they create.

The Heroines Collection celebrates iconic women
drawn from British literature and history across the
centuries, from the Regency period of the 1780’s
onwards to the ‘roaring’ and rebellious 1920’s. Royal
Doulton’s sensitive designs capture both the spirit of
each young woman and the typical costumes of the age.
Emma is inspired by the heroine of the novel of the same
name, by author Jane Austen, which was published in
1815. Headstrong, beautiful and rich, Emma was typical
of upper class women of the period. In an age when
marriage secured social standing, the novel explores
Emma’s attempts at matchmaking amongst her circle of
friends. Austen’s sense of humor, social manners and
keen observation of the hum-drum of daily life in a small
town has made the book one of her most loved works.
Mary is the height of elegance and symbolises the
refinement and glamour of country house living in the first
decades of the 20th century. UK television dramas have
brought the highs and lows of gracious living from this
time to homes throughout the world. Lady Mary represents
women of the age and especially the way they supported
traditional values, while embracing those of the
modern world.

Royal Doulton
Reflections Collection
Classique Collection
Graceful Presence, Lasting Pleasure
Fashion through the 20th Century
The Reflections Collection is a dramatic example of Royal Doulton’s
sculptural artistry. Each figure in the collection reflects the sculptor’s
impressions of the grace and poise of earlier times. Eloquently styled,
the charm of these expressive forms is timeless. Subtly shaded,
hand painted pastels of misty blue, cool green and soft beige
complement the flowing forms. Delicate brushstrokes create fresh
skin tones and facial expressions of extraordinary beauty.
Fashion through the 20th century is the theme of Royal Doulton’s Classique
Collection. From the opulence of the Edwardian era, through the “flapper”
styles of the roaring 20’s to the “new look” of the 1940’s each figure portrays
decades of femininity. Royal Doulton’s renowned sculptor, Tim Potts created
this collection in resin, which captures the detail of each authentic costume.
Each of these elegant figures comes with a beautiful marble base.
These figures will enhance any home décor. Individually or as a collection
they create a focal point which is an expression of great style and taste.

Royal Doulton Sets and Series
Flowers of Love
THE WIVES OF HENRY VIII
Created by Valerie Annand
The Infamous House of Tudor
Reflecting the mood of Victorian England,
the Flowers of Love Collection has been
designed by Royal Doulton’s celebrated
artist, Valerie Annand. Each figure has
been inspired by the Victorian language
of flowers where every flower expresses
a different message. In the Victorian
Language of Flowers, camellias conveys a
message of perfect loveliness and forgetme-nots one of loving remembrance.
The rose signifies gratitude and simplicity
while the primrose is associated with
young love. Each figure in the collection is
presented in elaborate costumes and hats.
This limited edition collection from Royal Doulton
brings King Henry VIII and his six wives to life. The
most notorious of English monarchs is instantly
recognizable from the popular Holbein painting
of Henry. His reign is remembered for his break
from the Catholic Church and the creation of the
Church of England, as much as the fetes of his six
wives, all of whom are opulently portrayed and
represent an outstanding achievement by their
sculptor, Pauline Parsons. Her detailed research
of their costumes and pursuits can be seen in
the series. The fetes of his six wives are equally
as well known to every British child as Henry’s
tumultuous reign and is eloquently described in
the childhood rhyme – Divorced, beheaded, died;
divorced, beheaded, survived. This series of the
King’s wives was issued in a limited edition of
9,500 between 1990 and 1993, together with a
showcase limited edition of Henry VIII HN3350,
in an edition of 1,991, to commemorate the

The Jester Collection
The familiar image of the jovial jester – with dangling bells and
colorful, mismatching patterns – had a profound influence on
some of the leading designers in the early days at the Doulton
Studio. Charles J. Noke, the original Art Director at Doulton,
was fascinated by the subject matter and legend has it that
the first piece he modeled for Doulton was that of a jester.
Noke’s first HN jester – Jack Point HN85 – was modeled
after the central character in Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera
“The Yeoman of the Guard”, first performed in 1888. In the
opera, Jack Point is a strolling jester with a broken heart. The
story ends tragically with the Jack Point collapsing, apparently
dead, after he is abandoned by his beloved, Elsie Maynard.
Charles Noke may have been interested in the many sides
of this professional clown, but he was equally aware that
the outer appearance of a jester was supposed to provoke
laughter and jollity. All the quality and artistry for which Royal
Doulton is renowned went into the making of these Jester
figures. These impressive, colorful characters represent the
pinnacle of achievement for the famous artists who created
them and the many collectors who admire them.

Jester Wall Masks
The trend for hanging wall masks of chic young ladies and
jovial jesters was at its peak in England during the 1930’s. Some of Royal Doulton most famous artists, including Leslie
Harradine, Harry Fenton and Richard Garbe were credited
with creating these colorful designs. The outbreak of World
War II brought production of these wall masks to a halt. Today,
with the revived interest in all things Deco, these delightful
wall masks are extremely desirable once again.
