ideology
Drummers continually tell us how they become inspired by playing MEINL
cymbals. They are inspired by the new sounds that they hear and feel, which
at the same time hones and shapes their personal drum style. This is the
biggest compliment for us, as well as the driving force behind all our
activities! It encourages us to develop new sounds and to push our
creativity farther forward.
team
From drummers for drummers! Experienced and motivated
individuals, who are all drummers themselves, form our executive
and creative team. This team plans all of our activities, manages
our promotional campaigns and creates inspiring cymbal sounds.
Some of our top artists take part in this process also. We are
proud to say that we are drummers first!
material
Only MEINL uses 5 different alloys for crafting cymbals, which
is more than any other cymbal maker is using today. Because of
that, we are able to offer the widest selection of basic cymbal sound
characteristics available. Striving for the realization of any possible
sound idea makes it necessary to have this diversity, the background
in and knowledge of all those different materials.
know how
Constantly trained and highly qualified employees master all
challenges within our production team. Most of them are drummers
themselves! And if someone is not and starts working for us, we pay for
the drum lessons. They know why they are doing what they do, and don’t
consider it just another 9 to 5 job. It’s that dedication which makes the
difference you can hear!
MEINL CYMBALS INSPIRE – LET THEM INSPIRE YOU TOO!

Crafting cymbals in Germany
Before the casting process
begins, the mixture is
laboratory tested in order to
analyze the exact chemical
composition of the alloy
(picture 1). Once the correct
mixture of compounds is
verified, the casting process
can begin (large picture).
After the ingots have cooled,
they are reheated in a furnace
and immediately transferred
to a trestle to begin the
rolling process (picture 2).
After several successive
rolling procedures, perfectly
compressed bronze sheets
are extruded. These cooled
sheets are then rolled again
into plates of different
thicknesses. Round blanks
with various diameters are
then cut out of these plates
(picture 3) and delivered to
the MEINL cymbal smithy for
further treatment.
In their modern production
facility in Germany, MEINL
processes the cymbal alloys
B12, B8, FX9, and MS63. All
of these alloys are cast
according to their special
requirements by worldwide
renowned foundries. The
main ingredients of all these
alloys are premium copper
and varying proportions of
pure tin, zinc, manganese, or
aluminum, depending on the
cymbal series.

Next, the cymbals are lathed
either by hand or machine in
order to produce their surface
and precise fine-tuning
(picture 11). Unique to MEINL
cymbals are the different
surface finishes available
which are created through a
special sandblasting
procedure, high-polishing, or
extensive lathing.
The final shape and
distinctive tonality of the
MEINL professional cymbals
are determined by the
hammering process. MEINL
uses hydraulic high-tech
hammering robots which
were developed specifically
to meet the hammering
process’ requirements
(picture 9). Depending on the

Having arrived at the MEINL
cymbal smithy, the blanks are
quality checked and stored at
the raw material storage
(picture 4). A hole is punched
through the center of the
round blanks. Depending on
the series and type, the
cymbal bell is then pressed
into the blank by either a cold
or a hot shaping process
(picture 5 + 6). A true MEINL
specialty is the forging of the
heat treated bell by extensive
hammering (picture 7). Next,
the blanks of the MEINL
Student Range, for example,
are pressed into their final
shape by a special process
which establishes the
fundamental pitch of the
instrument (picture 8).
State of the art technology
size and series, this
hammering process lasts up
to 15 minutes for each
cymbal. An imprint is taken of
a prototype cymbal which
later on becomes a cataloged
model. Each hammering hit is
recorded into the computer
through a laser sensor which
measures the exact position,
depth, and angle of impact as
well as the sequence of all
hammering marks (picture
10). Using this data, MEINL’s
computerized hammering
unit is able to exactly
reproduce the sound and
quality of the original model
over and over again. This is a
very important aspect
considering the requirements
in today’s studio world where
consistency in sound is
crucial!

Crafting cymbals in Turkey
the liquid bronze alloy is cast
into individual moulds (large
picture + picture 3).
After the ingots have cooled
(picture 4), they are cleaned
of the cinder. In various
successive production steps,
the castings are heated until
they glow red and fed
through rolling mills to be
flattened until the correct
thickness has been achieved
(picture 5 + 6). To ensure a
consistent compression of the
bronze, it is crucial that the
casts are rolled into different
directions every time they are
fed through the rolling mills.
Now the flattened sheets are
stored away for recreation of
the material.
1
In MEINL’s own production
facility in Turkey, B20 bronze
alloy cymbals are handcrafted.
The manufacturing of B20
bronze in Turkey has a long
tradition. Every cymbal is
individually cast. This means
that the bronze alloy of every
cymbal is separately poured
into individual moulds. In a
furnace with temperatures
exceeding 1000 degrees
Celsius, pure copper and tin
(picture 1) of the highest
quality are merged (picture
2). Once the correct mixture
of compounds is verified,
MEINL becomes the first
company to use Cymbal

After a final quality
inspection, they are stored in
order for the metal to relax.
When this storage period has
been completed, the
instruments are ready for
delivery worldwide.
8
Now the work of the cymbal
smiths begins. Every cymbal
is extensively hand
hammered into a shape
which will define its unique
and individual sound (picture
11 + 12). This complex art of
hand hammering cymbals not
only requires years of
experience, but also
concentration and a lot of
flair. Every hand hammered
cymbal is a true piece of art
and is unique in its own
sound which can never again
be duplicated.
10
The cymbals are then
delivered to the MEINL
Cymbal Smithy in Germany.
There, every cymbal is hand
tested for look and sound by
MEINL’s specialists. If a
cymbal does not conform to
their standards, it is recycled.
Cymbals which pass this test
are then grinded, and
depending on the model, high
polished, sandblasted, or they
remain in their regular finish.
Next an application of super
thin layer of lacquer (except
brilliant finish cymbals) is
applied in order to seal and
protect its surface.The MEINL
logo and series description is
pad printed and last but not
least the serial number is
engraved utilizing modern
laser technique.
6
At first, a hole is punched
through the sheet and then
cut round into the correct
diameter (picture 7 + 8). After
being reheated once more,
the bell of the cymbal is
pressed in (picture 9) and
dipped into a quenching bath
to increase the hardness
grade of the bronze.
Immediately after, they are
rubbed with a tincture in
order to prevent the bronze
sheets from breakage (picture
10). The formula of this
special tincture has been a
well treasured secret for
many generations!
Traditional handcraft
Next, the edges of the hand
hammered cymbals are deburred (picture 13) and the
lathing begins (picture 14).
Requiring years of experience
to achieve, lathing is an
extremely important step in
the production process. It
allows each cymbal to be
specifically fine-tuned.

All about MEINL cymbal alloys
B20
Alloy
Of all the bronze alloys used for cymbal making,
B20 bronze has the highest contingent of tin which
makes it very soft and flexible. MEINL’s B20 bronze is exclusively cast in Turkey, where the art of
cymbal making originates from.
Cymbals made from B20 bronze sound very dark
and musical. They blend in perfectly with the music
and have a smooth feel when hit. Of all the cymbal
alloys, B20 has the most sound potential and is
generally considered the finest material for making
cymbals.

B12
B8
Alloy
Alloy
Cymbals made from B12 bronze are the perfect
bridge between the sounds of B20 and B8 bronze
cymbals.
B8 bronze has the highest content of copper which
results in a more red-like finish. They are very firm
and easily resist hard playing.
B12 bronze cymbals have a warm and dark overall
tone that is standard of B20 bronze, yet they also
have the bright, lively, and powerful sounding
characteristics that B8 bronze cymbals are famous
for. The B12 bronze cymbals combine the best from
both worlds. They are very versatile sounding
cymbals and their tone blends in well with most of
the common music styles today.
The sound of cymbals made from B8 bronze is very
bright, powerful and has a lot of attack. It easily
cuts through loud volumes. The overall sound
spectrum shows a dominant share of higher
frequencies. Extremely lively cymbal sounds!

MS63
Alloy
Alloy
MS63 is a classic brass alloy which due to its positive sound characteristics is used in making mainly
student range cymbals.
The FX9 cymbal alloy is the most exceptional material used in crafting cymbals, because it combines
four components in one alloy with extraordinary
tonal characteristics.
Instead of tin, zinc is merged with copper which
then produces a warm and harmonic cymbal sound.
It offers the best possible sound qualities at an
affordable price.
Cymbals made from FX9 alloy offer new, fresh and
lively sounds with a unique and distinctive timbre.

What are the characteristics of a flat- and a ping ride?
Contrary to regular
rides, flat rides don’t
have a cymbal bell.
This results in a dark,
warm, and smooth
sound with a great
stick response, long
sustain and an overall
sweet tone. They are
mainly used for
playing fast ride
patterns in Swing- and
Jazz bands.
Ping rides are heavy
cymbals with a clearly
defined and cutting
ping sound. They have
a shorter sustain with
little wash and are
therefore perfect for
playing complex and
dominant ride patterns
in a louder band
setting.

12 · MEINL CYMBALS · SOUNDCASTER SERIES
Soundcaster cymbals are
uniformly hammered which
results in a controlled, even
decay with a harmonic
overtone spectrum.
Soundcaster cymbals are very
delicately lathed, which
involves a thinning of the
cymbal surface towards the
edge. A precise stick
definition and a wide range
of dynamics are the result of
this crucial process.
HIHATS
Why use different
weight top- and
bottom cymbals?
Medium:
Smooth and
voluminous open hihat
sound with a defined
chick. Wide dynamic
spectrum with an
outstanding warm
character.
14“ S14MH
Powerful:
Very energetic,
powerful with a fullbodied open hihat
sound. Strong chick
caused by heavier
weight.
14“ S14PH
Medium Soundwave:
Waved bottom
increases response,
crispness and volume.
Strong cutting chick
and lively feel.
14“ S14MSW
Powerful Soundwave:
Combination of
heavier weight and
waved bottom
produces distinctive
energetic and
penetrating sounds.
14“ S14PSW
The top cymbal of a
hihat is mainly
responsible for the
response and the
sound development of
the instrument. Best
results are achieved
with medium weight
cymbals.
The bottom cymbal is
responsible for the
definition when the
hihat is played by foot
pedal and also by the
stick. The heavier the
bottom, the faster its
stick response and the
more defined its chick
sound.
In order to achieve
best possible results, a
combination of
medium weight top
and heavy to extra
heavy bottom cymbals
are used.

The MEINL
Soundcaster crashes
are available in
various sizes and
weights. 16”, 17”, and
18” size crashes are
mainly considered as
the “standard” sizes.
MEINL offers these
crashes in two
weights, medium and
powerful. Besides that,
Soundcaster crashes
are available in 14”
and 15” medium for
fast, splash like crash
accents. Additionally,
19” and 20” powerful
crash models are also
offered in the
Soundcaster range for
rich, bright and cutting
crash sounds.
Why soundwaves?
The waved edge of the
bottom hihat prevents
a congestion of air
between the two
cymbals. When
stepping on the pedal,
the air can escape
immediately resulting
in a fat cutting “chick”
sound. When played
with a stick,
soundwaved hihats
respond very directly,
sounding sharp and
precise.

thin and fast

which are used in all

in order to add tasteful
rhythmic accents to the

hitting players and
louder music, 10” or

recommended because
they hold up better

The band that became
thisGIRL was formed in
November 1999. Playing
across South Yorkshire,
England, they quickly
established a reputation for
stunning live shows that
overwhelmed the audience
with virtuoso musicianship
and sheer sonic intensity.
Several releases later, the
band played the Pukkelpop
Festival in Belgium and found
themselves with a Kerrang! Awards
nomination for Best British Newcomer
2003. More recently, thisGIRL was invited
to be one of the five bands to play
alongside Limp Bizkit at Finsbury Park.
Their latest release “Demo’s for the
Family” was released in September 2003
and a U.S. tour is planned for March 2004.
The band has also been invited to tour
Hong Kong and Southeast Asia in 2004.

Cymbal guide
Every beginning drummer faces the
same question: What is the best way
to position the first basic cymbal setup around the drum kit?
The knowledge and experience that
will help to guarantee a relaxed
playing position on the drum kit is not
something that the beginning
drummer has. An important issue in
ensuring comfortable playing is the
correct positioning of the cymbals.
Following are some valuable guidelines for the ambitious beginner.
The drum throne is the center of every
drum kit and is also the most
ergonomically crucial spot. Starting from
here, it is essential that everything is
comfortably accessible and easy to reach
without having to twist or bend. All
cymbals should lean and face towards the
throne. This ensures long lasting and
comfortable playing without physical
problems.
As we gain experience as players, our
demands for a larger cymbal set-up
with various new sounds grows too.
Again, the throne is the “sweet spot” of
the drum kit and any additional cymbal
has to be easy accessible without having
to twist or bend in an uncomfortable
manner. All cymbals should lean and face
towards the chair.
How to set up your first cymbals?
The basic cymbal set-up
14“ hihat, 16“ crash, 20“ ride (from left to right)
Note: Positioning of cymbals is listed under the assumption of the drummer being right-handed.
If the drummer is left-handed, please reverse the set-up.
How to include additional cymbals
into your drum kit?
The advanced cymbal set-up
An additional splash cymbal is usually positioned near
the main hihat or between the two rack-toms. This results
from the fact that splash cymbals are often used for fast
accents and played in combination with fast hihat
patterns or tom-tom rolls.
For a greater tonal variety, crash- or china cymbals are
added to the cymbal set-up. These are mainly positioned
on the right side of the drum kit near the ride cymbal,
because crash- or china accents are often used to come
out on the “1” after tom-tom fills.
Marco Minnemann´s
massive set-up

If the drummer is left-handed, please reverse the set-up.

Cymbal assembly
What’s important?
Generally there are two issues which need special
attention:
ect metal ttoo metal ccontact
ontact
1. In order to avoid dir
direct
ontact,
make sure the cymbal and hihat stand are complete
and fully functional. Direct metal to metal contact can
result in unwanted rattling and disturb the sound of
the cymbals. Furthermore, it can cause damage around
the center hole of the cymbal.
2. KKeep
eep it loo
looss e! Over-tightening the wing nut of the
cymbal stand can prevent the cymbal from vibrating
freely and therefore doesn’t let it unfold its full sound
potential. It may sound choked and dead and will
eventually cause cracks in the cymbal.

Getting the best
sound out of the
cymbals!
In order to achieve the best possible sound
out of your cymbals, pay attention to a few
simple things:
1. Don’t over-tighten the wing nut above the
cymbal. Make sure the cymbal can vibrate
freely.
2. Set up your cymbal slightly angled towards
you.
3. Always hit the cymbal from the top (picture
A). Avoid striking your cymbal directly on its
edge (picture B). This can easily lead to
breakage of your cymbal.
4. Try to hit the cymbal a little bit off center
with a slight twist of your wrist. This will
help its sound to “open up”.
5. Choose the right stick weight and size
which best matches your playing. Lighter
sticks are beneficial for a more accented style
of playing and also in assuring the durability
of your valuable cymbals.
6. Always transport your cymbals in a proper
cymbal bag or a case.
Hihat clutch assembly
Check if your hihat clutch is complete and fully
functional. Missing parts may cause damage to your
cymbals or cause them to sound inadequate. Keep the
clutch at a medium tension to ensure a freely vibrating
top cymbal.

The shape of the cymbal bow has a tremendous
impact on the sound.
The shaping of the bow of a cymbal is an essential process in forming its basic sound
characteristic.
A flat bow has relatively less tension in the
material (picture A). The basic sound of a
cymbal like this is warm and dark with a fast
response.
A medium-steep bow builds up tension in the
material (picture B). Its basic sound is full
and rich with a more mid-range emphasis
and a direct response.

A steep bow has a strong tension in the
material (picture C). Its basic sound is very
powerful with strong high frequencies and a
clear, focused attack.

LINEAR JUNGLE GROOVES
DOUBLE KICK DOUBLES
by Johnny Rabb
by Thomas Lang
In these exercises we will focus on linear jungle grooves. No two
instruments are played at the exact same time. All of the notes are on
separate planes. If you have studied linear funk patterns, then you will be
very familiar with these exercises. It is important to practice the fragments
first to become comfortable playing them by them selves before moving
on. Once you’re comfortable, begin practicing the exercises slowly and
gradually speed up the tempo. Think of each exercise as a linear funk
groove when practicing at a slow or medium tempo.
Double stroke rolls don’t necessarily have to be played with your hands all
the time. Playing doubles with your feet for example will strengthen your
muscles and help you to built up your foot control.
Practice Tips:
Combine any four linear fragments to create your own original linear
jungle grooves. Always use a drum machine or metronome to keep your
time and groove solid!
When I play doubles on the bass drums, I accent the 2nd stroke just like
with the hands. It makes them more even and tighter. To be able to use
doubles in a musical way, I also started to incorporate accents and
dynamics into these patterns because without them, they sound boring
and flat.
When you’re practicing these exercises, always use a drum machine or
metronome to keep your time and groove solid. Start at a slow tempo and
built up your speed over the time.
